AIM: To investigate the performance of Gadofluorine P-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging(MRI) on the diagnosis of diabetes in a streptozotocin(STZ)-induced diabetic rat model.METHODS: Fischer 344 rats were treated with STZ.Rats not treated with STZ served as controls. T1-weighted MRI was performed using a 3T scanner before and after the injection of Gd-DOTA or Gadofluorine P(6 diabetic rats, 5 controls). The normalized signal intensity(SI) and the enhancement ratio(ER) of the pancreas were measured at each time point, and the values were compared between the normal and diabetic rats using the Mann-Whitney test. In addition,the values were correlated with the mean islet number.Optimal cut-off values were calculated using a positive test based on receiver operating characteristics.Intrapancreatic Gd concentration after the injection of each contrast media was measured using laser ablation-inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry in a separate set of rats(4 diabetic rats, 4 controls for Gadofluorine P; 2, 2 for Gd-DOTA).RESULTS: The normalized SI and ER of the pancreas using Gd-DOTA were not significantly different between diabetic rats and controls. With Gadofluorine P, the values were significantly higher in the diabetic rats than in the control rats 30 min after injection(P < 0.05). The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve that differentiated diabetic rats from the control group was greater for Gadofluorine P than for Gd-DOTA(0.967 vs 0.667, P = 0.085). An increase in normalized SI 30 min after Gadofluorine P was correlated with a decrease in the mean number of islets(r 2 = 0.510, P = 0.014). Intra-pancreatic Gd was higher in rats with Gadofluorine P injection than Gd-DOTA injection(Gadofluorine P vs Gd-DOTA, 7.37 vs 0.00, P < 0.01). A significant difference in the concentration of intrapancreatic Gd was observed between the control and diabetic animals that were sacrificed 30 min after Gadofluorine P injection(control vs diabetic, 3.25 ng/g vs 10.55 ng/g, P < 0.05)CONCLUSION: In this STZ-i

AIM：To evaluate the prevalence,clinical features,and the factors affecting onset of strabismus and nystagmus in patients with bilateral congenital cataracts.METHODS：This study evaluated 116 eyes of 58 patients who underwent lens removal for the treatment of bilateral congenital cataracts between January 1999 and January 2011.The presence and type of strabismus and nystagmus were determined before and after surgery.Type of strabismus and final visual acuity were compared in patients with and without nystagmus.Patients were divided into three groups（orthotropia/orthotropia,orthotropia/strabismus,and strabismus/strabismus） according to their preoperative and postoperative ocular alignment.Age at cataract surgery and associations of nystagmus and primary intraocular lens（IOL） implantation with strabismus were analyzed.RESULTS：Six patients（10.3%） had strabismus preoperatively and an additional 11（19.0%） developed postoperative strabismus.Exotropia was more common than esotropia both preoperatively and postoperatively.Eighteen patients（31.0%） had postoperative nystagmus,with sensory nystagmus being the most common type.Of the 18 patients with nystagmus,10 had strabismus,with exotropia being more common than esotropia.Postoperative visual acuity was poor in patients with nystagmus.Age at cataract surgery and rate of primary IOL implantation were significantly lower,and postoperative nystagmus was more common,in the orthotropia/strabismus group than in the other two groups.CONCLUSION：Exotropia and sensory nystagmus are common in patients with bilateral congenital cataracts.Age at cataract surgery and rate of IOL implantation are lowerand nystagmus more common in patients with postoperative onset of strabismus.Nystagmus is associated with poor visual prognosis.

All T cells require cytokine signaling for their development and maintenance, and CD8αα^(+) IEL T cells are noted for their requirement for IL-15 [8]. This IL-15 dependency was demonstrated by the paucity of CD8αα^(+) T cells among SI IELs in Il15–/– mice (Fig. 1d and Fig. S1a). However, the cytokine requirements of CD8αα^(+)CD4^(+) T cells are currently unclear. Because of the shared phenotype of CD8αα expression with CD8αα^(+) IELs, we postulated that CD4^(+)CD8αα^(+) IELs would also depend on IL-15.

Alkaline hydrazine liquid fuel cells(AHFC) have been highlighted in terms of high power performance with non-precious metal catalysts.Although Fe-N-C is a promising non-Pt electrocatalyst for oxygen reduction reaction(ORR),the surface density of the active site is very low and the catalyst layer should be thick to acquire the necessary number of catalytic active sites.With this thick catalyst layer,it is important to have an optimum pore structure for effective reactant conveyance to active sites and an interface structure for faster charge transfer.Herein,we prepare a Fe-N-C catalyst with magnetite particles and hierarchical pore structure by steam activation.The steam activation process significantly improves the power performance of the AHFC as indicated by the lower IR and activation voltage losses.Based on a systematic characterization,we found that hierarchical pore structures improve the catalyst utilization efficiency of the AHFCs,and magnetite nanoparticles act as surface modifiers to reduce the interracial resistance between the electrode and the ion-exchange membrane.

Endoscopic submucosal dissection(ESD)is now recognized as the preferred treatment modality for gastrointestinal epithelial lesions.A 21-month-old female was admitted with a giant hyperplastic polyp causing a gastric outlet obstruction.Successful ESD was performed with caution.The post-procedural course was uneventful without a bleeding episode.Although further study of the feasibility of ESD in early children is necessary,ESD could be applied to avoid laparotomy even in young children.

Diabetogenic traits in patients undergoing liver transplantation(LT) are exacerbated intraoperatively by exogenous causes, such as surgical stress, steroids,blood transfusions, and catecholamines, which leadto intraoperative hyperglycemia. In contrast to the strict glucose control performed in the intensive care unit, no systematic protocol has been developed for glucose management during LT. Intraoperative blood glucose concentrations typically exceed 200 mg/dL in LT, and extreme hyperglycemia(> 300 mg/dL) is common during the neohepatic phase. Only a few retrospective studies have examined the relationship between intraoperative hyperglycemia and posttransplant complications, with reports of infectious complications or mortality. However, no prospective studies have been conducted regarding the influence of intraoperative hyperglycemia in LT on post-transplant outcome. In addition to absolute blood glucose values,the temporal patterns in blood glucose levels during LT may serve as prognostic features. Persistent neohepatic hyperglycemia(without a decline) throughout LT is a useful indicator of early graft dysfunction. Moreover,intraoperative variability in glucose levels may predict the need for reoperation for hemorrhage after LT.Thus, there is an urgent need for guidelines for glucose control in these patients, as well as prospective studies on the impact of glucose control on various posttransplant complications. This report highlights some of the recent studies related to perioperative blood glucose management focused on LT and liver disease.

AIM: To study the mechanism of Je-Chun-Jun (JCJ)-inducing the apoptosis of the human cervical carcinoma, HeLa cells. METHODS: The cell viability was assessed using MTT assay. The optical density was measured at 570 nm. The caspase activity was measured using 50 mmol/L of fluorogenic substrate, AC-DEVD-AMC (caspase-3), AC-VEID-AMC (caspase-8) or AC-LEHD-AFC (caspase-9). To confirm the expression of proteins, Western blotting was performed. To detect the characteristic of apoptosis chromatin condensation, HeLa cells were stained with Hoechst 33258 in the presence of JCJ. For the cell cycle analysis, HeLa cells were incubated with Propidium iodide (PI) solution. Fluorescence intensity of cell cycle was measured using flow cytometry system. RESULTS: The loss of viability occurred following the exposure of 10 g/L JCJ. Cells treated with 10 g/L JCJ for 3 d exhibited the apoptotic morphology (brightly blue-fluorescent condensed nuclei by Hoechst 33258-staining) and the reduction of cell volume. Cells incubated

A flexible copper clad laminate(FCCL) was fabricated using electroless-and electro-Cu plating processes and the effects of pre-treatment time on the adhesion strength of the FCCL were evaluated based on interfacial morphology.The neutralization and catalyst time were varied in the range of 0-20 min and 0.1-10 min,respectively,and the interfacial condition of the FCCL was characterized by atomic force microscopy(AFM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS).It is observed that the peel strength increases significantly as the neutralization and catalyst time increase.Peel strength as high as 7.2-7.3 N/cm is obtained as the neutralization and catalyst time increase up to 20 min and 10 min,respectively,which is comparable to the strength achieved by the conventional laminating and sputtering processes.These improvements are probably due to an increase in the surface roughness of polyimide(PI),the activated surface condition,and the adsorption of palladium ions/atoms(Pd) on the PI surface which act as nucleation sites for Cu.
