ObJECTIVES:Cure from seizures due to cavernomas might be surgically achieved dependent on both,the complete removal of the cavernoma as well as its surrounding hemosiderin *** field intraoperative MRI imaging(iopMRI)and neuronavigation might play a crucial role to achieve both *** retrospectively investigated the long-term results and impact of intraoperative 1.5T MRI(iopMRI)and neuronavigation on the completeness of surgical removal of a cavernous malformation(CM)and its perilesional hemosiderin rim as well as reduction of surgical ***:26 patients(14 female,12 male,mean age 39.1years,range:17～63 years)with CM related epilepsy were *** patients suffered from drug resistant epilepsy(69.2%).Mean duration of epilepsy was 11.9 years in subjects with drug resistant epilepsy(n=18)and 0.3 years in subjects presenting with firsttime seizures(n=8).We performed 24 lesionectomies and two lesionectomies combined with extended temporal *** lesions were located ***:Complete CM removal was documented by postsurgical MRI in all *** direct consequence of iopMRI,refined surgery was necessary in 11.5%of patients to achieve complete cavernoma removal and in another 11.5%for complete resection of additional adjacent epileptogenic *** of the hemosiderin rim was confirmed by iopMRI in 92%of *** patients suffered from mild(7.7%)and one from moderate(3.8%)visual field *** seizure control(Engel class 1A)was achieved in 80.8%of patients with a mean follow-up period of 47.7 ***:We report excellent long-term seizure control with minimal surgical morbidity after complete resection of CM using our multimodal approach.

Entropy dominated behaviors of confined polymer-nanoparticle composites

Stretched polymers will lose their possible configurations if they are mixed with nanoparticles or touch a hard wall, which leads to a strong depletion attraction responsible for the enrichment of nanoparticles near substrates. Moreover, it is found that there exists a sacrifice mechanism in confined pure polymer samples or polymer-nanoparticle mixtures, that part of the polymers, in order to reach a minimum free energy for the total system, are adsorbed on hard walls even though they lose their conformation. The current study provides a simple yet effective approach for the design of thin polymer composites.

biological systems are the sum of their dynamic three-dimensional(3D)***,it is critical to study biological structures in 3D and at high resolution to gain insights into their physiological *** microscopy of metal replicas of unroofed cells and isolated organelles has been a key technique to visualize intracellular structures at nanometer ***,many of these methods require specialized equipment and personnel to complete ***,we present novel accessible methods to analyze biological structures in unroofed cells and biochemically isolated organelles in 3D and at nanometer resolution,focusing on Arabidopsis clathrin-coated vesicles(CCVs).While CCVs are essential trafficking organelles,their detailed structural information is lacking due to their poor preservation when observed via classical electron microscopy protocols ***,we establish a method to visualize CCVs in unroofed cells using scanning transmission electron microscopy tomography,providing sufficient resolution to define the clathrin coat ***,the samples are prepared directly on electron microscopy grids,removing the requirement to use extremely corrosive acids,thereby enabling the use of this method in any electron microscopy ***,we demonstrate that this standardized sample preparation allows the direct comparison of isolated CCV samples with those visualized in ***,to facilitate the high-throughput and robust screening of metal replicated samples,we provide a deep learning analysis method to screen the“pseudo 3D”morphologies of CCVs imaged with 2D ***,our work establishes accessible ways to examine the 3D structure of biological samples and provide novel insights into the structure of plant CCVs.

Predator-induced changes of male and female mating preferences: innate and learned components

While many mati ng pref ere nces have a genetic basis, the question remai ns as to whether and how learning/experience can modify individual mate choice decisions. We used wild-caught (predator-experienced) and Fi laboratory-reared (predator-naive) invasive Western mosquitofish Gambusia affinis from China to test whether mating preferences (assessed in a first mate choice test) would change under immediate predation threat. The same individuals were tested in a second mate choice test during which 1 of 3 types of animated predators was presented: 1) a co-occurring predator, 2) a co-evolved but not currently co-occurring predator, and 3) a non-piscivorous species as control. We compared preference scores derived from both mate choice tests to separate innate from experiential effects of predation. We also asked whether predator-induced changes in mating preferences would differ betwee n sexes or depend on the choosing individual's personality type and/or body size. Wild-caught fish altered their mate choice decisions most when exposed to the co-occurring predator whereas laboratory-reared individuals responded most to the co-evolved predator, suggesting that both innate mechanisms and learning effects are involved. This behavior likely reduces individuals' risk of falling victim to predation by temporarily moving away from high-quality (i.e., conspicuous) mating partners. Accordingly, effects were stronger in bolder than shyer, large- compared with small-bodied, and female compared with male focal individuals, likely because those phenotypes face an increased predation risk overall. Our study adds to the growing body of literature appreciating the complexity of the mate choice process, where an array of intrinsic and extrinsic factors interacts during decision-making.

Preprotein import into chloroplasts depends on macromolecular machineries in the outer and inner chloroplast envelope membrane （TOC and TIC）. It was suggested that both machineries are interconnected by components of the intermembrane space （IMS）. That is, amongst others, Tic22, of which two closely related isoforms exist in Arabidopsis thaliana, namely atTic22-III and atTic22-IV. We investigated the function of Tic22 in vivo by analyzing T-DNA insertion lines of the corresponding genes. While the T-DNA insertion in the individual genes caused only slight defects, a double mutant of both isoforms showed retarded growth, a pale phenotype under high-light conditions, a reduced import rate, and a reduction in the photosynthetic performance of the plants. The latter is supported by changes in the metabolite content of mutant plants when compared to wild-type. Thus, our results support the notion that Tic22 is directly involved in chloroplast preprotein import and might point to a particular importance of Tic22 in chloroplast biogenesis at times of high import rates.

Neuronavigation and epilepsy surgery

Resective epilepsy surgery is an elective therapy indicated in focal epilepsy patients who are resistant to pharmacotherapy. Every effort should be undertaken to perform the procedures as safe and less traumatic as possible. Neuronavigation could represent a suitable tool to reduce surgical morbidity and increase surgical radicality. Here, we present a series of 41 patients who were operated on for medically intractable epilepsy using neuronavigation. Overall, complication rate was 17% with a favourable seizure outcome of 88% (Engel’s class I/II). Our data suggest that neuronavigation is a valuable surgical technique to accomplish a favourable outcome in epilepsy surgery.

The human striatum is essential for both lowand high-level functions and has been implicated in the pathophysiology of various prevalent disorders,including Parkinson's disease(PD)and schizophrenia(SCZ).It is known to consist of structurally and functionally divergent ***,previous parcellations are based on a single neuroimaging modality,leaving the extent of the multi-modal organization of the striatum ***,we investigated the organization of the striatum across three modalities—resting-state functional connectivity,probabilistic diffusion tractography,and structural covariance—to provide a holistic convergent view of its structure and *** found convergent clusters in the dorsal,dorsolateral,rostral,ventral,and caudal *** characterization revealed the anterior striatum to be mainly associated with cognitive and emotional functions,while the caudal striatum was related to action ***,significant structural atrophy in the rostral and ventral striatum was common to both PD and SCZ,but atrophy in the dorsolateral striatum was specifically attributable to *** study revealed a cross-modal convergent organization of the striatum,representing a fundamental topographical model that can be useful for investigating structural and functional variability in aging and in clinical conditions.

besides their direct impact on the respective correlated color temperature, the extinction coefficient and the quantum effi- ciency of the phosphor also have tremendous impact on the thermal load of the color conversion elements of phosphor converted LEDs under operation. because of the low thermal conductivity of the silicone matrix in which the phosphor particles are typically embedded, the by far highest temperatures within the LED assembly are reached within the color conversion element. based on a combined optical and thermal simulation procedure we show that in particular a larger value for the extinction coefficient might have a beneficial impact on the resulting thermal load.
