Crohn's disease in one mixed-race population in Brazil

AIM： To evaluate the classification and severity of Crohn＇s disease in different racial groups. METHODS： Patients with Crohn＇s disease from the outpatient clinic of the University Hospital Prof. Edgard santos were enrolled in the study. This hospital is a reference centre for inflammatory bowel disease. Race was determined using self-identification. The Vienna＇s classification was applied for all subjects. The severity of Crohn＇s disease was determined according to the number of surgical procedures, hospital admissions in the last year and treatment with steroids and immunosuppressors. Statistical analysis was calculated using t test for means,χ^2 or F for proportions. A P value 〈 0.05 was considered to be significant. RESULTS： Sixty-five patients were enrolled. Non-white patients were more frequently diagnosed with Crohn＇s disease in the age less than 40 years than white patients. The behaviour of disease was similar in both groups with a high frequency of the penetrating form. There was a tendency for non-white patients to have a greater frequency of hospital admissions in the last year compared to white subjects. Non-whites also had a higher rate of colonic and upper gastrointestinal involvement, and were also more frequently on treatment with immunossupressors than white patients although this difference was not statistically significant. CONCLUSION： Non-white patients with Crohn＇s disease had an earlier diagnosis and appeared to have had a more severe disease Dresentation than white patients.

The FAIR principles,an acronym for Findable,Accessible,Interoperable and Reusable,are recognised worldwide as key elements for good practice in all data management *** understand how the Brazilian scientific community is adhering to these principles,this article reports Brazilian adherence to the GO FAIR initiative through the creation of the GO FAIR Brazil Office and the manner in which they create their implementation *** contextualise this understanding,we provide a brief presentation of open data policies in Brazilian research and government,and finally,we describe a model that has been adopted for the GO FAIR Brazil implementation *** Brazilian Institute of Information in Science and Technology is responsible for the GO FAIR Brazil Office,which operates in all fields of knowledge and supports thematic implementation ***,GO FAIR Brazil-Health is the first active implementation network in operation,which works in all health domains,serving as a model for other fields like agriculture,nuclear energy,and digital humanities,which are in the process of adherence *** report demonstrates the strong interest and effort from the Brazilian scientific communities in implementing the FAIR principles in their research data management practices.

Nephrotoxicity in cancer treatment:An overview

Anticancer drug nephrotoxicity is an important and increasing adverse drug event that limits the efficacy of cancer *** kidney is an important elimination pathway for many antineoplastic drugs and their metabolites,which occurs by glomerular filtration and tubular *** agents,both conventional cytotoxic agents and molecularly targeted agents,can affect any segment of the nephron including its microvasculature,leading to many clinical manifestations such as proteinuria,hypertension,electrolyte disturbances,glomerulopathy,acute and chronic interstitial nephritis,acute kidney injury and at times chronic kidney *** clinician should be alert to recognize several factors that may maximize renal dysfunction and contribute to the increased incidence of nephrotoxicity associated with these drugs,such as intravascular volume depletion,the associated use of nonchemotherapeutic nephrotoxic drugs(analgesics,antibiotics,proton pump inhibitors,and bonetargeted therapies),radiographic ionic contrast media or radiation therapy,urinary tract obstruction,and intrinsic renal *** of patients at higher risk for nephrotoxicity may allow the prevention or at least reduction in the development and severity of this adverse ***,the aim of this brief review is to provide currently available evidences on oncologic drug-related nephrotoxicity.

Technical Evaluation of Hybrid Clones of Corymbia spp. to Produce Market Pulp

This study presents hybrid clones of Corymbia *** by Aperam BioEnergia as potential substitutes for Eucalyptus wood in the pulp *** biomass of Eucalyptus *** compared with that of Corymbia *** performing modified kraft pulping and basic density *** were made by analyzing their respective mean annual increments of cellulose(MAI_(cel))and specific wood consumption(SWC),estimated using a kappa number of(19±1).The results showed that one of the hybrid clones(Corymbia citriodora×Corymbia torelliana,ID 4)had higher basic wood density,higher screened yield,better MAI_(cel#k19),and lower SWC than the other samples,reaching values of 0.608 t/m^(3),54.1%,24.6 ADt/ha/year(i.e.,air dry ton/hectare/year),and 2.74 m^(3)/ADt,***,clone ID 4 had the highest MAI_(cel)/SWC ratio score(8.98).Given its high forest productivity and low industrial cost compared with other samples,as well as its advantages over Eucalyptus ***,we concluded that clone ID 4 has great potential as an alternative biomass for pulp production.

Obtaining and Characterization of Biodegradable Composites Reinforced with Microcrystalline Cellulose Fillers

In recent years, there has been a growing discussion about the problems related to the massive use of many synthetic plastic materials, which inevitably leads to an increase in environmental pollution caused by the inappropriate disposal of these materials. In this sense, biodegradable materials have been a subject of great interest, as they are a real alternative to replace these materials and tackle this issue. In this work, fully biodegradable composites were prepared by solution casting method. Microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) and treated microcrystalline cellulose (TMCC) were separately incorporated into biodegradable PLA and PHB matrices at ratios of 3, 5 and 7 wt% and the properties of the obtained biocomposites were evaluated by TGA, DSC, XRD and TD-NMR. From thermal analyses, it was seen that TMCC resulted in better thermal stability and 3 wt% of filler, in general, promoted a more pronounced thermal improvement. Furthermore Tg, Tc and Tm remained practically unchanged after MCC and TMCC addition. From XRD it was seen that the cellulose fillers influence in different ways the matrices, promoting increase or decrease in the degree of crystallinity. Finally, the results obtained by TD-NMR showed a decrease in the T1H values for all prepared biocomposites, indicating a good dispersion of the cellulose fillers in the matrices and pointed that the systems containing 3 wt% of cellulose fillers were the most homogeneous formulations.

This work describes a simple yet powerful scalable solution chemistry strategy to create back‐contact rich interfaces between substrates such as commercial transparent conducting fluorine‐doped tin oxide coated glass(FTO)and photoactive thin films such as hematite for low‐cost water oxidation ***‐resolution electron microscopy(SEM,TEM,STEM),atomic force microscopy(AFM),elemental chemical mapping(EELS,EDS)and photoelectrochemical(PEC)investigations reveal that the mechanical stress,lattice mismatch,electron energy barrier,and voids between FTO and hematite at the back‐contact interface as well as short‐circuit and detrimental reaction between FTO and the electrolyte can be alleviated by engineering the chemical composition of the precursor solutions,thus increasing the overall efficiency of these low‐cost photoanodes for water oxidation reaction for a clean and sustainable generation of hydrogen from PEC water‐*** findings are of significant importance to improve the charge collection efficiency by minimizing electron‐hole recombination observed at back‐contact interfaces and grain boundaries in mesoporous electrodes,thus improving the overall efficiency and scalability of low‐cost PEC water splitting devices.

Effects of Copaiba Oil on Cyclophosphamide-Induced Teratogenesis in Mice

Cyclophosphamide is an anti-neoplastic chemotherapy drug which, when administered to animals during the gestational period, provokes visceral, skeletal and external malformations. Copaiba oil obtained from Copaifera L. genus is traditionally used in popular medicine for its anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial activities. However, the effect of copaiba oil onteratogenesis remains unknown. This study aimed to investigate the possible protector effects of copaiba oil on the model of teratogenesis induced by cyclophosphamide in mice. Pregnant female Swiss mice were divided into 8 groups (n = 15). Three groups received copaiba oil, via gavage, in the following doses: 0.3 mL·Kg-1, 0.6 mL·Kg-1 and 0.9 mL·Kg-1 (b.w.), associated to phosphate-buffered saline (PBS), intraperitoneal (i.p.). The negative control group received medium chain triglyceride (MCT) and PBS. The positive control group received cyclophosphamide (30 mg·Kg-1 (b.w.)) and MCT. The three treatment groups called associated groups (A) received one of the doses of copaiba oil, via gavage and an associated dose of cyclophosphamide intraperitoneally. Copaiba oil presented a protective effect against teratogenesis induced by cyclophosphamide in the following skeletal structures: metacarpals, forepaws proximal phalanges, and tail vertebras. It also reduced the hydrocephalus frequency. These data suggest that copaiba oil could be a potential candidate for an anti-teratogenic agent.

Synthesis, Characterization, Spectral Properties and Electrochemical of Compounds trans-[Ru(NH)₃L(bpa)]²⁺

n this work, we present synthesis of the compounds trans-[Ru(NH3)4L(bpa)]2+ where L is pyridine ligands: pyridine (py), isonicotinamide (isn), 4-acetylpyridine (4-acpy) and 4-picoline (4-pic) and 1,2-bis (4-pyridyl) ethane (bpa), their characterization by UV-visible spectroscopy and electrochemical properties. This series shows intense bands in the region between 400 and 515 nm, allocated bands charge transfer (MLCT), the influence of substituents on the pyridine ring (4-acpy and isn), and the interaction between the ligand and the metal, causing a second MLCT band, which is lighter and has more energy. The compound is characterized by spectroscopy by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The displacement observed in the symmetrical stretching of νs(CCN) group in the complex compared with the νs(CCN) group in the free ligand is indicative of coordination of the pyridine group to the Ruthenium (II) metallic center. The electrochemical data (cyclic voltammetry) show that reversibility criteria are well defined and formal Ef potential, indicating the influence of the pyridine ring substituent.

Approach to Pain in Endometriosis Patients: Systematic Literature Review

Background: Endometriosis is a gynecological, multifactorial condition that affects women’s life quality, especially due to the pain inherent to it. Pain is caused by physical and psychological aspects;therefore, several factors must be analyzed, aiming to treat the whole. Conventional, drug or surgical treatments are the most used;however, the search for alternative therapeutic methods is growing. Objective: To analyze the approach to pain in women with endometriosis, seeking a better understanding of the pathophysiological mechanisms of this disease, its impact on life quality, as well as the means of treatments in use and innovations in this field. Methods: Systematic literature review, conducted in the Virtual Health Library databases between 2010 and 2021, restricted to articles in English and Portuguese with the descriptors: Endometriosis, Pain, and Treatment. After reading the abstracts, 197 articles were found, and, after reading them, 59 articles were selected. Results: This review analyzed 59 scientific studies that rigorously met the previously established characteristics in the sample selection. The synthesis included the following aspects: author/year of publication, article title, objective, type of study and database. Related factors such as acute or chronic pain, late diagnosis, discrediting symptomatic complaints and trivialization by health professionals have a profound impact on the physical and mental health of women with endometriosis. On the other hand, there are several classes of drugs, surgical procedures, and alternative therapies available for pain management. Conclusion: Given the context addressed, a certain need is suggested for health professionals to better understand the disease and adopt new behaviors or improve existing ones, such as reception, active listening, early diagnosis and comprehensive and individualized treatment. Therapeutic Approaches to Post-Mastectomy Pain Syndrome

Background: Breast cancer is increasingly common in society and post-mastectomy pain is a striking condition associated with surgery, both intra and postoperatively. The post-mastectomy syndrome is characterized by the persistence of pain for more than 3 months after the procedure. It is mostly of neuropathic origin and is highly refractory to treatments, which vary from clinical to surgical measures and alternative techniques. In this context, it is essential to understand the possible approaches to these patients. Objective: Understand alternatives for pain management in patients undergoing mastectomy, especially in those in whom pain persists for more than 3 months. Methods: Systematic literature review, conducted in the Virtual Health Library databases includes: Lilacs, SciELO, Medline, PubMed and Cochrane between 2018 and 2023, restricted to articles in English with the descriptors: Mastectomy, chronic Pain, Nerve Blocks and Breast Cancer. 317 articles were found involving the descriptors presented, all in English. After reading the abstracts, 28 articles were selected. Results: This review analyzed 28 scientific studies that rigorously met the previously established characteristics in the sample selection. The synthesis included the following aspects: author/year of publication, article title, objective, type of study and database. Conclusion: It was concluded that, according to the analyzed studies, post-mastectomy pain is a problem that has increased its incidence and that needs the attention of health professionals. The use of antineuropathic medications, nerve blocks, fat grafting, lymph node transplantation, therapy, physical activity and acupuncture are some examples of therapeutic approaches for these women. Therefore, the team must assist the patients, seeking to provide a better prognosis, quality of life and comfort.
