Effects of Copaiba Oil on Cyclophosphamide-Induced Teratogenesis in Mice

Cyclophosphamide is an anti-neoplastic chemotherapy drug which, when administered to animals during the gestational period, provokes visceral, skeletal and external malformations. Copaiba oil obtained from Copaifera L. genus is traditionally used in popular medicine for its anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial activities. However, the effect of copaiba oil onteratogenesis remains unknown. This study aimed to investigate the possible protector effects of copaiba oil on the model of teratogenesis induced by cyclophosphamide in mice. Pregnant female Swiss mice were divided into 8 groups (n = 15). Three groups received copaiba oil, via gavage, in the following doses: 0.3 mL·Kg-1, 0.6 mL·Kg-1 and 0.9 mL·Kg-1 (b.w.), associated to phosphate-buffered saline (PBS), intraperitoneal (i.p.). The negative control group received medium chain triglyceride (MCT) and PBS. The positive control group received cyclophosphamide (30 mg·Kg-1 (b.w.)) and MCT. The three treatment groups called associated groups (A) received one of the doses of copaiba oil, via gavage and an associated dose of cyclophosphamide intraperitoneally. Copaiba oil presented a protective effect against teratogenesis induced by cyclophosphamide in the following skeletal structures: metacarpals, forepaws proximal phalanges, and tail vertebras. It also reduced the hydrocephalus frequency. These data suggest that copaiba oil could be a potential candidate for an anti-teratogenic agent.

Functional Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass (F-RYGB), with Preservation of Duodenal Access: Report of Two Revisional Cases of Sleeve Gastrectomy

Objective: This case report aimed to demonstrate a possible neuromuscular effect of Latarjet nerves transection or truncal vagotomy, in association with sleeve gastrectomy plus antrojejunostomy, in order to reproduce a Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) mechanistic principles, in patients with previous Sleeve Gastrectomy (SG) who had had weight regain, with or without concomitant gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). Background: Sleeve gastrectomy (SG) is one of the most frequently performed bariatric operations worldwide. Nevertheless, weight regain and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) have been consistently demonstrated, in association with this technique, which may require a revisional procedure. RYGB is an option in such a situation but, implies in gastrointestinal exclusions, which represents a shortcoming of this revision. Surpassing this inconvenient would be of great value for the patients. Methods: We describe herein two cases of SG revision for weight regain and GERD, with a follow-up of one year. Gastroesophageal reflux disease was evaluated by validated questionnaire, upper endoscopy, seriography, high resolution manometry (HRM) and impedance pHmetry (I-pHmetry), in the pre and postoperative periods. A re-Sleeve Gastrectomy with antrojejunal anastomosis was done in both cases, after informed consents. The Latarjet nerves were transected in one case, due to a bleeding in the left gastric vessels and a truncal vagotomy was required in the other, to appropriately treat an associated hiatal hernia. Results: In the postoperative evaluation it was observed a pyloric spasm in both cases, during seriography and endoscopy, kept until the one-year follow-up. There was unidirectional contrast flow to the gastrointestinal anastomosis, filling the jejunal limb, in radiologic contrast study. No contrast passed through the pylorus. Obesity is a significant and escalating health issue both in Brazil and globally, with over 650 million overweight adults worldwide. The treatment of obesity can be performed clinically, endoscopically or surgically;surgical treatment proves to be safe and more effective in terms of weight loss and long-term maintenance. Objective: This study aimed to monitor the progress of weight loss and comorbidity control in patients undergoing sleeve gastrectomy with duodenal bipartition. Methods: This pilot project involved 8 patients divided into 2 arms. In the first arm, patients underwent sleeve gastrectomy with Roux-en-Y duodenoileal transit bipartition (S-RYDITB), while in the second arm, patients underwent sleeve gastrectomy with Roux-en-Y duodenojejunal transit bipartition (S-RYDJTB). Both procedures involved Roux-en-Y reconstruction without duodenal exclusion. In S-RYDITB, the duodenal-ileal anastomosis was performed 300 cm from the ileocecal valve (ICV), creating a 250 cm common channel and a 50 cm alimentary channel. In S-RYDJTB, a biliopancreatic loop was created 200 cm from the angle of Treitz, with a 1 m alimentary channel. Results: Five patients underwent the procedures, with one undergoing S-RYDITB and four undergoing S-RYDJTB. No adverse events such as hospitalizations, readmissions, reoperations, fistulas, bleeding, pulmonary embolism, diarrhea, dumping syndrome, or hypoglycemia occurred during the study period. The mean length of hospital stay was 2 days. The average BMI decreased from 37.27 kg/m2 preoperatively to 29.48 kg/m2 after 6 months. The significant percentage of weight loss was 21.22%, with excess weight loss of 63.6%. Ninety-five percent remission of comorbidities, including hypercholesterolemia, hypertriglyceridemia, diabetes, hypertension, steatosis, and pre-diabetes. The stone marten(Martes foina)is a carnivorous mammal that often consumes fleshy fruits,thus potentially promoting seed *** present study was developed in Bussaco National Forest,central Portugal,and aimed to assess the potential role of the stone marten in dispersing native and exotic plants in different forest landscape *** from stone marten scats and fleshy fruits were collected monthly and were thereafter identified and sowed in a nursery,following a randomized experimental *** emergence was monitored *** linear models were used to test for differences in time and success of emergence between seeds from scats and fruits of 3 native species(Rubus ulmifolius,Arbutus unedo and Celtis australis)and 1 exotic plant species with invasive behavior(Prunus laurocerasus).Fruit consumption by the stone martens significantly increased and accelerated the germination of the native *** but had no effect on the other 2 native species or on the invasive *** suggested that stone martens contribute to gene flow and forest regeneration by dispersing native plant ***,although the germination was not enhanced in the invasive species,the preference of stone martens for these fruits may potentially contribute to the proliferation of *** study represents a contribution to better understanding the fauna and flora interactions,enabling for a more conscious and effective decision-making in forest management.

Skin problems in children under five years old at a rural hospital in Southern Ethiopia

Objective: To examine the prevalence of cutaneous disorders in children under 5 years old who attended a rural hospital in Southern ***: A prospective cross-sectional study was conducted from January 26 to February 20, 2015 in children under 5 years old who attended Gambo Rural Hospital in West Arsi of the Oromia Region, ***: A total of 324 children were included(59.6% male) whose median age was 16.4months. In total, 147 children [45.4%; 95% confidence interval(CI): 40.0%–50.8%]under 5 years had a skin problem, of which 101(68.7%) consulted for that reason. The other 46(31.3%) consulted for a general health problem and the dermatological condition was a secondary finding during the physical exploration. In 93 children(28.7%; 95% CI:20%–33.8%), it was the main disease, and in 54 children(16.5%; 95% CI: 13.0%–21.1%)it was concomitant with other diseases. The most common dermatological disease was scabies(n = 44, 13.6%; 95% CI: 10.3%–17.7%). Impetigo was diagnosed in 32 children(9.9%; 95% CI: 7.1%–13.3%), of which 23(71.9%) had complicated impetigo. Nineteen children(5.9%; 95% CI: 3.8%–9.0%) had eczema, 10(3.1%) had eczema associated to other conditions. The following most frequent skin problems were tinea(n = 9; 2.8%),infected wound and ulcer(n = 7; 2.2%), and burns(n = 6; 1.9%).Conclusions: Skin problems, mainly scabies, impetigo, and eczema were common in young children attended at a rural hospital in Southern Ethiopia. Children under 5 years should be examined thoroughly to rule out skin diseases, especially scabies.

The New Rigid Element for Laminated Cylindrical Shell

Thermal effects are incorporated into developed discrete layer mechanics for two-dimensional cylindrical shells structures. Finite element equations are developed according to layerwise theory of laminated structure. Following the layerwise theory, a variable kinematic model that incorporates mechanics and thermal conditions is also presented. The new element has a field of displacement compatible with the cylindrical shell element or plate and it can be used as a rigid element for this structural *** the laminate model construction, adjacent layers are arranged as bonded layers. The layer has a unique constant thickness that can be different to each layer. The fiber reinforced is used and the fibers in a laminate may be oriented arbitrarily. The shear stress is adopted equal to zero because the thin thickness, on the other hand, the normal stress is maintained in order to ensure the compatibility of stress in material. The previously authors of this methods neglect the implications of thermal effects on cylindrical shells structures. Thermal effects become important when the structure has to operate in either extremely hot or cold temperature environments. These extreme conditions may severely affect the response of structure in two distinct ways：（1） induction of thermal stresses due to differences in the coefficients of thermal expansion between the various composite plies and layers and （2） temperature dependence of the elastic properties. Only a limited amount of work has been reported concerning this topic. All in all, the main contribution of this work is the consideration of this kinematic for cylindrical shells that incorporate mechanics and thermal conditions. In addition, numerical results are presented to demonstrate the capability of the current formulation to represent the behavior of cylindrical shells with these characteristics.
