Use of Neutron Activation Analysis and Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry for the Determination of Trace Elements in Pediatric and Young Adult Prostate

The questions about the androgen control and the involvement of trace elements in prostatic reproductive function still remain unanswered. One valuable way to elucidate the situation is to compare the values for the prostatic mass fractions of trace elements in pre-and post-pubertal boys. The effect of age on the mass fraction of 54 trace elements in intact prostate of 50 apparently healthy 0-30 years old males was investigated by neutron activation analysis and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. Mean values (M ± SΕΜ) for mass fraction (milligram per kilogram, on dry-weight basis) of trace elements were: Ag 0.062 ± 0.008, Al 80 ± 18, Au 0.0092 ± 0.0024, B 5.9 ± 3.5, Be 0.0034 ± 0.0009, Bi 0.018 ± 0.010, Br 26 ± 3, Cd 0.26 ± 0.05, Ce 0.049 ± 0.012, Co 0.035 ± 0.004, Cr 0.49 ± 0.07, Cs 0.036 ± 0.005, Dy 0.0072 ± 0.0018, Er 0.0040 ± 0.0011, Fe 100 ± 10, Gd 0.0065 ± 0.0018, Hg 0.031 ± 0.004, Ho 0.0013 ± 0.0004, La 0.034 ± 0.007, Li 0.064 ± 0.009, Mn 1.69 ± 0.15, Mo 0.54 ± 0.13, Nb 0.013 ± 0.004, Nd 0.025 ± 0.006, Ni 4.1 ± 0.6, Pb 1.3 ± 0.2, Pr 0.0058 ± 0.0015, Rb 14.5 ± 0.8, Sb 0.051 ± 0.006, Sc 0.013 ± 0.002, Se 0.54 ± 0.03, Sm 0.0055 ± 0.0015, Sn 0.22 ± 0.05, Tb 0.0012 ± 0.0004, Th 0.0076 ± 0.0020, Ti 2.8 ± 0.5, Tl 0.0032 ± 0.0009, Tm 0.00064 ± 0.00017, U 0.0025 ± 0.0004, Y 0.036 ± 0.010, Yb 0.0037 ± 0.0012, Zn 281 ± 32, and Zr 0.16 ± 0.04. The upper limit of mean mass fraction of As, Eu, Ga, Hf, Ir, Lu, Pd, Pt, Re, and Ta were: As ≤ 0.069, Eu ≤ 0.0012, Ga ≤ 0.071, Hf ≤ 0.049, Ir ≤ 0.00054, Lu ≤ 0.00063, Pd ≤ 0.014, Pt ≤ 0.0029, Re ≤ 0.0048, and Ta ≤ 0.010. This work revealed that there is a significant tendency for the mass fractions of Cd, Se and Zn in the prostate tissue of healthy individuals to increase with age from the time of birth up to 30 years. It was also shown that high levels of Al, Au, B, Br, Cr, Ga, Li, and Ni mass fraction in prostate tissue do not indicate a direct involvement of these elements in the reproductive function of prostate.

Aging is a key risk factor for cognitive decline and age-related neurodegenerative disorders. Also, an age-related decrease in sex steroid hormones may have a negative impact on the formation of neurofibrillary tangles （NFTs）; these hormones can regulate Tau phosphorylation and the principal kinase GSK3β involved in this process. Hormone replacement therapy decreases NFTs, but it increases the risk of some types of cancer. However, other synthetic hormones such as tibolone （TIB） have been used for hormone replacement therapy. The aim of this work was to evaluate the long-term effects of TIB （0.01 mg/kg and 1mg/kg, intragastrically for 12 weeks） on the content of total and hyperphosphorylated Tau （PHF-1） proteins and the regulation of GSK3β/Akt/PI3K pathway and CDK5/p35/p25 complexes in the hippocampus of aged male mice. We observed that the content of PHF-1 decreased with TIB administration. In contrast, no changes were observed in the active form of GSK3β or PI3K. TIB decreased the expression of the total and phosphorylated form of Akt while increased that of p110 and p85. The content of CDK5 was differentially modified with TIB： it was increased at low doses and decreased at high doses. When we analyzed the content of CDK5 activators, an increase was found on p35; however, the content of p25 decreased with administration of low dose of TIB. Our results suggest a possible mechanism of action of TIB in the hippocampus of aged male mice. Through the regulation of Tau and GSK3β/Akt/PI3K pathway, and CDK5/p35/p25 complexes, TIB may modulate neuronal plasticity and regulate learning and memory processes.

月球表面构造对于理解和重建月球地质构造演化具有重要意义,月岭、月溪等线性构造的形态及分布特征与月球内动力构造运动密切相关。极为有限的样品和难度极高的野外勘察使得遥感成为行星科学研究的最主要手段。中国、美国、日本、印度等国先后发射的多颗新型探月卫星获取了大量高质量数据,尤其是高分辨率的数字地形数据(DTM,Digital Terrain Model)。高分辨率的DTM为月球表面构造特征的自动提取带来了新的机遇与挑战。文中利用多种分辨率的DTM数据,基于多尺度数字地形定量分析方法,识别和提取月球表面的线性构造。使用的地形数据包括500m分辨率"嫦娥一号"激光高度计数据,100m分辨率LRO-WAC广角相机数据,60m分辨率的LRO-LOLA激光测距仪数据以及分辨率高达5m的LRO-NAC窄视角相机数据。文中使用地形曲率来识别月溪月岭等线性构造,并利用不同滑动窗口大小和阈值进行线性构造的自动提取。对研究区试验结果的定量分析表明,文中提出的基于地形曲率的月表线性构造自动提取方法是有效且可行的,其结果可为月球表面线性构造解译提供重要参考,提高构造解译时效性和精度。

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease(NAFLD),the most common chronic liver disorder in Western countries,comprises steatosis to nonalcoholic steatohepatitis(NASH),with the latter having the potential to progress to *** transition from isolated steatosis to NASH is still poorly understood,but lipidomics approach revealed that the hepatic lipidome is extensively altered in the setting of steatosis and steatohepatitis and these alterations correlate with disease *** data suggest that both quantity and quality of the accumulated lipids are involved in pathogenesis of *** in glycerophospholipid,sphingolipid,and fatty acid composition have been described in both liver biopsies and plasma of patients with NAFLD,implicating that specific lipid species are involved in oxidative stress,inflammation,and cell *** this article,we summarize the findings of main human lipidomics studies in NAFLD and delineate the currently available information on the pathogenetic role of each lipid class in lipotoxicity and disease progression.

Numerical Simulation of an Argon Stirred Ladle with Top and Bottom Injection

The stirring of a molten steel ladle with argon injection through a top submerged lance and a bottom nozzle is numerically studied here through Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations. Three lance submergence depths and three injection velocities are considered in the CFD numerical experiments. The turbulent dissipation rate is employed to characterize the stirring phenomenon. The mixing times are determined from the gas flow rate, ladle geometry and bath depth using an empirical correlation.

Background:As of 2015 thousands of refugees are being hosted in temporary refugee camps in *** populations,travelling and living under poor conditions with limited access to healthcare are at a high risk of exposure to vector borne disease(VBD).This study sought to evaluate the risk for VBD transmission within refugee camps in Greece by analyzing the mosquito and sand fly populations present,in light of designing effective and efficient context specific vector and disease control ***:A vector/pathogen surveillance network targeting mosquitoes and sand flies was deployed in four temporary refugee camps in *** collections were conducted bi-weekly during June-September 2017 with the use of Centers for Disease Control(CDC)light traps and oviposition *** conventional and molecular diagnostic tools we investigated the mosquito/sand fly species composition,population dynamics,pathogen infection rates,and insecticide resistance status in the major vector ***:Important disease vectors including Anopheles sacharovi,Culex pipiens,Aedes albopictus and the Leishmania vectors Phlebotomus neglectus,*** and *** were recorded in the study refugee *** mosquito pathogens(Plasmodium parasites,flaviviruses)were detected in the analysed samples yet high sand fly Leishmania infection rates are *** pipiens mosquitoes displayed relatively high knock down resistance(kdr)mutation allelic frequencies(ranging from 41.0 to 63.3%)while kdr mutations were also detected in *** populations,but not in Anopheles and sand fly *** diflubenzuron(DFB)mutations were detected in any of the mosquito species ***:Important disease vectors and pathogens in vectors(Leishmania spp.)were recorded in the refugee camps indicating a situational risk factor for disease *** *** and *** kdr mutation frequencies recorded pose a potential threat against the effectiveness of

Dear editor,Spontaneous regression of testicular cancer is a rare phenomenon,which has not been completely *** so-called burned-out tumors typically present at metastatic stage with no testicular symptoms or clinical evidence of a primary testicular lesion and can be mistaken for primary extragonadal *** is the most likely to regress without treatment,whereas a burnedout seminoma is uncommon[1].Gonadal function is often impaired in men with testicular *** 25%of these men experience spermatogenic failure,such as a Sertoli cell-only syndrome with azoospermia[2].We present the case of a patient with burned-out testicular seminoma and contralateral Sertoli cell-only *** consent to procedures and publication was obtained from the patient before presentation of this case report.

In this exploratory work,micrometric radiopaque W-Fe-Mn-C coatings were produced by magnetron sputtering plasma deposition,for the first time,with the aim to make very thin Fe-Mn stents trackable by *** power of Fe-13Mn-1.2C target was kept constant at 400 W while that of W target varied from 100 to 400 W producing three different coatings referred to as P100,P200,*** effect of the increased W power on coatings thickness,roughness,structure,corrosion behavior and radiopacity was *** coatings showed a power-dependent thickness and W concentration,different roughness values while a similar and uniform columnar *** amorphous phase was detected for both P100 and P200 coatings while γ-Fe,bcc-W and W_(3)C phases found for ***,P200 and P400 showed a significantly higher corrosion rate(CR)compared to *** presence of W,W_(3)C as well as the Fe amount variation determined two different micro-galvanic corrosion mechanisms significantly changing the CR of coatings,0.26±0.02,59.68±1.21 and 59.06±1.16μm/year for P100,P200 and P400,*** P200 with its most uniform morphology,lowest roughness(RMS=3.9±0.4 nm)and good radiopacity(~6%)appeared the most suitable radiopaque biodegradable coating investigated in this study.

The aim of this paper is to analyse the legal status of irregular migrants, both in Brazil and in Italy, from a comparative law perspective. Irregular migration has always been a sensitive issue in Italian politics and is going to be a core-issue in a time of economic crisis, while in Brazil the current wave of international migration is regarded as a new phenomenon, resulting from the recent economic growth. From a legal standpoint, this study provides an analysis of both national legal order and the jurisprudential trends issued by the Inter-American Court of Human Rights （IACtHR） and the European Court of Human Rights （ECtHR）, specifically underlining the judicial borrowing and interaction between the two courts.
