Real-time sono-elastography in the diagnosis of diffuse liver diseases

AIM: To analyze whether computer-enhanced dynamic analysis of elastography movies is able to better characterize and differentiate between different degrees of liver fibrosis. METHODS: The study design was prospective. A total of 132 consecutive patients with chronic liver diseases and healthy volunteers were examined by transabdominal ultrasound elastography. All examinations were done by two ***: Due to the limitations of the method, we obtained high-quality elastography information in only 73.48% of the patients. The κ-means clustering method was applied to assess the inter-observer diagnosis varia- bility, which showed good variability values in accordance with the experience of ultrasound examination of every observer. Cohen’sκ test indicated a moderate agreement between the study observers (κ = 0.4728). Furthermore, we compared the way the two observers clustered the patients, using the test for comparing two proportions (t value, two-sided test). There was no statistically significant difference between the two physicians, regardless of the patients’ real status. CONCLUSION: Transabdominal real-time elastography is certainly a very useful method in depicting liver hard- ness, although it is incompletely tested in large multicenter studies.

A chloromethylated styrene-divinylbenzene copolymer support system functionalized with 4-benzaldehyde and 2-benzaldehyde was prepared. The degree of functionalization with aldehyde groups is well suited for the subsequent use of the products as Wittig reagents. The polymer bound aldehyde was reacted with Wittig reagents to give olefin groups grafted on styrene-divinylbenzene copolymers. The reactions were carded out in phase transfer catalysis conditions. A simple procedure for the calculation of the degree of functionalization and the statistical modeling of the structural repetitive unit of the copolymer are reported.

In this paper a basic mathematical model is introduced to describe the dynamics of three ceil lines after allogeneic stem cell transplantation： normal host cells, leukemic host cells and donor cells. Their evolution is one of competitive type and depends upon kinetic and cell-cell interaction parameters. Numerical simulations prove that the evolution can ultimately lead either to the normal hematopoietic state achieved by the expansion of the donor cells and the elimination of the host cells, or to the leukemic hematopoietic state characterized by the proliferation of the cancer line and the suppression of the other cell lines. One state or the other is reached depending on cell-cell interactions （anti-host, anti-leukemia and anti-graft effects） and initial cell concentrations at *** model also provides a theoretical basis for the control of post-transplant evolution aimed at the achievement of normal hematopoiesis.

Time-lapse changes of in vivo injured neuronal substructures in the central nervous system after low energy two-photon nanosurgery

There is currently very little research regarding the dynamics of the subcellular degenerative events that occur in the central nervous system in response to injury. To date, multi-photon excitation has been primarily used for imaging applications; however, it has been recently used to selectively disrupt neural structures in living animals. However, understanding the complicated processes and the essential underlying molecular pathways involved in these dynamic events is necessary for studying the underlying process that promotes neuronal regeneration. In this study, we introduced a novel method allowing in vivo use of low energy（less than 30 m W） two-photon nanosurgery to selectively disrupt individual dendrites, axons, and dendritic spines in the murine brain and spinal cord to accurately monitor the time-lapse changes in the injured neuronal structures. Individual axons, dendrites, and dendritic spines in the brain and spinal cord were successfully ablated and in vivo imaging revealed the time-lapse alterations in these structures in response to the two-photon nanosurgery induced lesion. The energy（less than 30 m W） used in this study was very low and caused no observable additional damage in the neuronal sub-structures that occur frequently, especially in dendritic spines, with current commonly used methods using high energy levels. In addition, our approach includes the option of monitoring the time-varying dynamics to control the degree of lesion. The method presented here may be used to provide new insight into the growth of axons and dendrites in response to acute injury.

Cultural Disjunction in B. Mukherjee＇s Wife

After experiencing racism in Canada, where multiculturalism emphasized ethnic differences and fixed identities rather than allowing for cultural interaction and hybridity, the author, B. Mukherjee, moves to the USA whose biculturalism favors cultural interactions and fluid identities. Here she experiences the transformative powers of cultural interactions and frees herself and her work from the static power of cultural disjunction. Her personal experience highlights the need of immigrant characters to connect to the mainstream and not to be isolated from it The paper explores the problem of cultural adaptability and integration as experienced by Dimple, the main character in Mukherjee＇s novel Wife （1975）. Based upon contemporary research on cultural and social identity formation, the paper analyses Dimple＇s inner struggle of identity in the context of her immigrant status, and it relates her ultimately tragic response to loneliness and alienation resulting in cultural disjunction, non-adaptability, and non-assimilation.

BACKGROUND Despite significant technical and training improvements, the incidence of postendoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography(ERCP) pancreatitis(PEP) has not significantly dropped. Although many studies have evaluated the efficacy of various agents, e.g. nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, octreotide,antioxidants, administered via various dosages, routes(oral, intrarectal or parenteral), and schedules(before or after the procedure), the results have been *** To evaluate efficacy of three pharmacologic prophylactic methods for prevention of *** In this prospective, single-center randomized trial, patients who underwent firsttime ERCP for choledocholithiasis were randomly assigned to three groups. The first group received 600 mg N-acetylcysteine 15 min prior to ERCP, and perrectum administration of 50 mg indomethacin both prior to and after completion of the ERCP. The second group was administered only the 50 mg indomethacin per-rectum both prior to and after the ERCP. The third group was administeredper-rectum 100 mg indomethacin only after the ERCP, representing the control group given the guideline-recommended regimen. The primary end-point was PEP *** Among the total 211 patients evaluated during the study, 186 fulfilled the inclusion criteria and completed the protocol. The percentages of patients who developed PEP in each of the three groups were not significantly different(χ2 =2.793, P = 0.247). Among the acute PEP cases, for all groups, 14 patients developed mild pancreatitis(77.77%) and 4 moderate. No severe cases of PEP occurred, and in all PEP cases the resolution was favorable. No adverse events related to the medications(digestive hemorrhage, rectal irritation, or allergies)*** The efficacies of split-dose indomethacin and combined administration(Nacetylcysteine with indomethacin) for preventing PEP were similar to that of the standard regimen.

In this study was to investigate, by phase-transfer catalysis, the activity of single and mixed ammonium and phosphonium salts grafted on a 揼el-type?styrene-7% divinylbenzene copolymer in the oxidation of benzyl alcohol with hydrogen peroxide. A wide variety of catalysts with different quaternary groups and different quaternary chain length substituents were examined. The activity of single 搊nium?salts increases as a consequence of the association of ammonium and phosphonium salts grafted on the same polymeric support. The activity of polymer-supported ammonium and phosphonium salts increases with the number of carbon atoms contained in the alkyl radicals of the onium and of the functionalization degree with phosphonium groups.

Effect of tillage systems on soil properties, humus and water conservation

Human action upon soil by tillage determines important morphological, physical-chemical and biological changes, with different intensities and evaluative directions. Nowadays, it is internationally accepted the fact that global climatic changes are the results of human intervention in the bio-geo-chemical water and material cycle, and the sequestration of carbon in soil is considered an important intervention to limit these changes. Carbon sequestration in soil is net advantageous, improving the productivity and sustainability. The more the organic content in soil is higher the better soil aggregation is. The soil without organic content is compact. This reduces its capacity to infiltrate water, nutrients solubility and productivity, and that way it reduces the soil capacity for carbon sequestration. Organic matter is an extremely important constituent of soils and is vital to many of the hydrological, biological and chemical reactions required for sustaining plant life. We present the influence of conventional plough tillage system on soil, water and organic matter conservation in comparison with an alternative minimum tillage system (paraplow, chisel plow and rotary harrow). The application of minimum tillage systems increased the organic matter content 0.8% to 22.1% and water stabile aggregate content from 1.3% to 13.6%, in the 0 - 30 cm depth, as compared to the classical system. For the organic matter content and the wet aggregate stability, the statistical analysis of the data showed, increasing positive significance of minimum systems. While the soil fertility and the wet aggregate stability were initially low, the effect of conservation practices on the soil features resulted in a positive impact on the water permeability of the soil. Availability of soil moisture during the crop growth resulted in better plant water status. A systematic study on the synthesis and antibacterial activity of the quaternary "onium" salts grafted on an insoluble "gel-type" styrene-7% divinylbenzene copolymer by polymer-analogous reactions is showed. Antibacterial activity of quaternary ammonium and/or phosphonium salts grafted on polymer-supports has been studied against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. A wide variety of "onium" salts bound to macromolecular supports with different quaternary groups and different quaternary chain length substituents were examined. The antibacterial activity of mixed "onium" salts increases as a consequence of the association of ammonium and phosphonium salts grafted on the same polymeric support.
