The analysis and design of offshore structures necessitates the consideration of wave loads. Realistic modeling of wave loads is particularly important to ensure reliable performance of these structures. Among the available methods for the modeling of the extreme significant wave height on a statistical basis, the peak over threshold method has attracted most attention. This method employs Poisson process to character- ize time-varying properties in the parameters of an extreme value distribution. In this paper, the peak over threshold method is reviewed and extended to account for subjectivity in the modeling. The freedom in selecting the threshold and the time span to separate extremes from the original time series data is incorpo- rated as imprecision in the model. This leads to an extension from random variables to random sets in the probabilistic model for the extreme significant wave height. The extended model is also applied to different periods of the sampled data to evaluate the significance of the climatic conditions on the uncertainties of the parameters.

In recent years,the pharmacological benefits of herbal extracts have been revisited for their potential neuroprotective effects in *** polysaccharides extracted from the fruits of Lycium barbarum L.,or Lycium barbarum polysaccharides,exert their anti-aging effect through reducing oxidative stress,modulating the immune response,enhancing neuronal responses,and promoting *** therapeutic efficacy of Lycium barbarum polysaccharides in preserving retinal ganglion cells and their functions was demonstrated in a range of experimental models of optic *** include the acute and chronic ocular hypertension models,the partial optic nerve transection model,and the ischemic-reperfusion injuries *** on these findings,Lycium barbarum polysaccharides appear to be a good candidate to be developed as a neuroprotective agent for treating multifactorial *** review aims to present a comprehensive review on the latest preclinical evidence on the pre-and post-treatment benefits of Lycium barbarum polysaccharides in retinal ganglion cell *** possible mechanisms of Lycium barbarum polysaccharides mediating retinal ganglion cell neuroprotection will also be ***,the potential research gaps in the effective translation of Lycium barbarum polysaccharides treatment into clinical glaucoma management will be discussed.

Our previous studies suggested that redox reaction proceeded separately on specific exposed crystal faces of TiO2 nanoparticles. Site-selective deposition of metal or metal oxide on TiO2 specific exposed crystal faces successfully proceeded using the unique reactivity properties on the surface of TiO2 nanoparticles under photoexcitation. A remarkable improvement ofphotocatalytic activity of shape- controlled brookite and rutile TiO2 nanorods with modification of Fe^3＋ compounds was observed under visible light. Crystal face-selective metal compound modification on exposed crystal faces of TiO2 nanorods with brookite and futile phases was successfully prepared. Brookite and rutile TiO2 nanorods prepared by site-selective modification with metal compounds should be ideal visible-light responsive TiO2 photocatalysts because of the remarkable suppression of back electron transfer from TiO2 to oxidized metal com- pounds on the surface of the TiO2 nanorod with a brookite or rutile phase. In this paper, the development of exposed crystal face-controlled TiO2 nanorods with rutile and brookite phases was described. The obtained rutile and brookite TiO2 nanorod, showing remarkably high activity for degra- dation of organic compounds compared with the photocatalytic activities of anatase fine particles （ST-01）, is one of the most active commercially available photocatalysts for environmental cleanup in Japan. The technology of visiblelight responsive treatment for morphology-controlled rutile and brookite TiO2 nanorods by crystal face-selective modification of Fe^3＋ compounds was also discussed in this paper. The Fe^3＋ compound-modified rutile and brookite TiO2 nanorods show much higher activity than conventional visible-light responsive N-doped TiO2, which is commercially available in Japan.

Adoptive T-cell therapy(ACT)is a promising therapeutic approach based on the concept of potent T-cell mediated immunity against the *** outcome of antigen-specific T-cells responses relies on the interaction between T-cells and antigen-presenting cells,which provides signals for generating different T-cell phenotypes with different roles in tumor ***,such interaction is often not optimal in vivo and results in low therapeutic *** reach the full potential of the T-cell response,current research put effort into developing dynamic biomaterials as artificial antigen-presenting cells to study and regulate the T-cell activity for controlling T-cell *** this perspective,we provide(1)an overview of ACT and general T-cells behaviors,(2)explore the insight on how biomaterials can be used for studying and regulating T-cell behaviors,(3)and discuss conceptual gaps in knowledge for biomaterials-based immunotherapy.

The pyogenic liver abscess caused by Clostridium perfringens (C. perfringens ) is a rare, but rapidly fatal infection. It is usually associated with malignancy and immunosuppression. We report the case of 50-year-old lady with the secondary liver metastases from rectal cancer presented with fever and epigastric pain. The identification of Grampositive bacilli septicaemia, the presence of gas-forming liver abscess and massive intravascular hemolysis should lead to the suspicion of C. perfringens infection. Here we review twenty cases published since 1990 and their clinical features are discussed. The importance of "an aggressive treatment policy" with multidisciplinary team approach is emphasized.

Pre-tensioned high strength trusses using alloy steel bar are widely used as glass wall supporting systems because of the high degree of *** breakage of glass panes in this type of system occurs occasionally,likely to be due to error in design and analysis in addition to other factors like glass impurity and stress concentration around opening in a spider *** design does not consider the flexibility of supports from finite stiffness of supporting steel or reinforced concrete *** resistance of lateral wind pressure of the system makes use of high tension force coupled with the large deflection effect,both of which are affected by many parameters not generally considered in conventional *** the design,one must therefore give a careful consideration on various effects,such as support settlement due to live loads and material creep,temperature change,pre-tension force,and wind *** is not uncommon to see many similar glass wall systems fail in the wind load test chambers under a design wind *** paper presents a rigorous analysis and design of this type of structural systems used in a project in Hong Kong,*** stability function with initial curvature is used in place of the cubic function,which is only accurate for linear *** considerations and analysis techniques are believed to be of value to engineers involved in the design of the structural systems behaving nonlinearly.

Nursing practice has been expanded greatly with time passing *** innovative form of nursing practice is nurse-led *** term“nurse-led care/service”has been introduced in nursing discipline for years as early as in 1960s[1].Later,several nurse-led services were reported in 1980s and 1990s[2-7].The common characteristics in these units were that the nurses provided additional things to improve patients'care,and the standard of practice was extremely high[8].The accelerating development of nurse-led care was triggered by the health care system reform in United Kingdom(UK)around *** 1999,the UK government document‘Making a difference’was published[9],under the pressure of redesigning services to reduce waiting time and medical cost and to meet shortfalls in junior medical staffing[10].Since then,nurse-led care has been reported in increasing studies[11].

Arboricultural research focusing on transport land use was lacking in Hong *** highway slopes were registered in the Systematic Identification of Maintenance Responsibility of Slopes in the Territory(SIMAR),abbreviated as SIMAR *** aimed to analyze patterns in the structure and species composition of the tree stock along a highway in Hong Kong and examined how a slope registration system could help explain the characteristics of urban *** 53 slopes and 52 verges along San Tin Highway,Hong Kong were randomly *** trees on each slope and verge were collectively sampled as a tree *** variables,namely tree abundance,species richness,maximum tree height,Shannon-Wiener diversity,Simpson's dominance,and Pielou's evenness were measured for each *** addition,a limited visual tree risk assessment was *** 7,209 trees in 23 species were *** richness was low,ranging from one to eight species per *** and non-SIMAR slopes were *** slopes had significantly higher species richness,diversity,evenness but lower dominance,with mean difference of 1.41 species,0.17,0.17 *** slopes were associated with lower tree risk *** training regression models,boosting as an ensemble method arbitrarily raised the explanatory power and the predictive accuracy of some *** height,length,angle and area could be significant predictors of the biodiversity-related *** research can sample more habitat characteristics related to the structure and species composition of slopes and verges which were important components of urban forestry.
