Developing a chloramine decay index to understand nitrification:A case study of two chloraminated drinking water distribution systems

The management of chloramine decay and the prevention of nitrification are some of the critical issues faced by water utilities that use chloramine as a *** this study,potential association between high performance size exclusion chromatography（HPSEC）data obtained with multiple wavelength Ultraviolet（UV） detection from two drinking water distribution systems in Australia and nitrification occurrence was *** increase in the absorbance signal of HPSEC profiles with UV detection at λ = 230 nm between apparent molecular weights of 200 to 1000 Da was observed at sampling sites that experienced rapid chloramine decay and nitrification while its absorbance signal at λ =254 nm decreased.A chloramine decay index（C.D.I） defined as the ratio of area beneath the HPSEC spectra at two different wavelengths of 230 and 254 nm,was used in assessing chloramine decay *** *** of waters at locations that experienced nitrification were consistently higher than locations not experiencing nitrification.A simulated laboratory study showed that the formation of nitrite/nitrate and/or soluble microbial products and/or the release of extracellular polymeric substances（EPS） during nitrification may contribute to the *** findings suggest that C.D.I derived from HPSEC with multiple wavelength UV detection could be an informative index to track the occurrence of rapid chloramine decay and nitrification.

Non-Diapiric Salt Domes in the West Zanjan, Central Iran

The salt domes of the west Zanjan (Central Iran) are the most important structures in the study area. They have been formed by the uplifting and erosion together under low humidity and dry and warm climate condition. The salt rocks with near to 200 meters thickness are related to lower member of the Upper Red Formation (Early Miocene) that deposited in the inverted back arc basin. They have been formed in the Central Iran basin after the Arabian-Eurasian convergence. Based on filed works and preparation of geologic map, salt domes have been cropped out during regional uplifting and erosion along hinge zone of a longitudinal anticline. Also, there is no evidence for salt diapirism and so, they are different from some salt diapirs in the southwestern margin of Zanjan that is investigated by other researchers.

Effects of humidity on shear behavior of bamboo

Bamboo is a naturally occurring biological composite, however its microstructure and hence its properties are very complex compared to the manmade composites. Due to optimization, it can be assumed that the variation in properties along the thickness of the culm be a smooth transition for better bonding strength between layers and to prevent non uniformity in stress concentration. As a consequence, biological structures are complicated and functionally graded. Hence, a realistic model that can capture the mechanical performance of bamboo is valuable in future design of robust multifunctional composites. This paper presents the results of experimental and numerical studies on the torsional （shear） properties of bamboo. The hierarchical and multi-scale structure of bamboo and the distribution of micro-scale fibers are revealed via laser scanning and atomic force microscopy. This information was incorporated into a finite element model to analyze the mechanical behavior of bamboo under torsion and to estimate the shear modulus of bamboo along the fibers. Moreover, the effects of humidity and therefore water content on the mechanical properties of bamboo were evaluated by performing torsion tests on samples maintained in environments with different humidities. Increasing the humidity does not cause a drop in the shear modulus, however, a jump in the shear modulus did occur at around 60% humidity. Results of this study indicate that the highest strength values in samples occurred in environments with humidity levels between 60% and 80% and undergo a significant drop after that. In higher humidities, the samples behave more ductile.

Correlation of subway turnstile entries and COVID-19 incidence and deaths in New York City

In this paper,we show a strong correlation between turnstile entries data of the New York City(NYC)subway provided by NYC Metropolitan Transport Authority and COVID-19 deaths and cases reported by the NYC Department of Health from March to May *** correlation is obtained through linear regression and confirmed by the prediction of the number of deaths by a Long Short-Term Memory neural *** correlation is more significant after considering incubation and symptomatic phases of this disease as experienced by people who died from *** extend the analysis to each individual NYC *** also estimate the dates when the number of COVID-19 deaths and cases would approach zero by using the Auto-Regressive Integrated Moving Average model on the reported deaths and *** also backward forecast the dates when the first cases and deaths might have occurred.

Failed biliary cannulation: Clinical and technical outcomes after tertiary referral endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography

AIM: Prospective evaluation of repeat endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) for failed Schutz grade 1 biliary cannulation in a high-volume center. METHODS: Prospective intention-to-treat analysis of patients referred for biliary cannulation following recent unsuccessful ERCP. RESULTS: Fifty-one patients (35 female; mean age: 62.5 years; age range: 40-87 years) with previous failed biliary cannulation were referred for repeat ERCP. The indication for ERCP was primarily choledocholithiasis (45%) or pancreatic malignancy (18%). Successful biliary can- nulation was 100%. The precut needle knife sphincterotomy (NKS) rate was 27.4%. Complications occurred in 3.9% (post-ERCP pancreatitis). An identif iable reason for initial unsuccessful biliary cannulation was present in 55% of cases. Compared to a cohort of 940 nave pa-pilla patients (female 61%; mean age: 59.9 years; age range: 18-94 years) who required sphincterotomy over the same time period, there was no statistical difference in the cannulation success rate (100% vs 98%) or postERCP pancreatitis (3.1% vs 3.9%). Precut NKS use was more frequent (27.4% vs 12.7%) (P = 0.017). CONCLUSION: Referral to a high-volume center following unsuccessful ERCP is associated with high technical success, with a favorable complication rate, compared to routine ERCP procedures.

A major cause of some of serious issues encountered in a drilling project,including wellbore instability,formation damage,and drilling string stuck e which are known to increase non-productive time(NPT)and hence the drilling cost e is what we know as mud *** mud loss can be prevented or at least significantly reduced by taking proper measures beforehand provided the position and intensity of such loss can be properly predicted using an accurate predictor ***,in this study,we used the convolutional neural network(CNN)and hybridized forms of multilayer extreme learning machine(MELM)and least square support vector machine(LSSVM)with the Cuckoo optimization algorithm(COA),particle swarm optimization(PSO),and genetic algorithm(GA)for modeling the mud loss rate based on drilling data,mud properties,and geological information of 305 drilling wells penetrating the Marun *** this purpose,we began by a pre-processing step to attenuate the effect of noise using the Savitzky-Golay *** whole set of available data was divided into the modeling(including 2300 data points)and the validation(including 483 data points)***,the second generation of the non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm(NSGA-Ⅱ)was applied to the modeling data to identify the most significant features for estimating the mud *** results showed that the prediction accuracy increased with the number of selected features,but the increase became negligible when the number of selected features exceeded ***,the following 9 features were selected as input to the intelligent algorithms(IAs):pump pressure,mud weight,fracture pressure,pore pressure,depth,gel 10 min/gel 10 s,fan 600/fan 300,flowrate,and formation *** of the hybrid algorithms and simple forms of LSSVM and CNN to the training data(80%of the modeling data,i.e.1840 data points)showed that all of the models tend to underestimate the mud loss at higher mud loss rates,although the CNN exhibited l

Assessment of the anterior chamber parameters after laser iridotomy in primary angle close suspect using Pentacam and gonioscopy

AIM:To evaluate the changes in the anterior segment parameters of the subjects with primary angle closure suspect(PACS) before and after laser iridotomy(LI) using the Pentacam and gonioscopy. METHODS:Forty-eight eyes of 48 PACS were *** chamber angle(ACA),central anterior chamber depth(ACD),anterior chamber volume(ACV) and central corneal thickness(CCT) were recorded from the Pentacam before and one month after *** was graded according to Shaffer classification using Goldmann ***:ACA increased significantly from 25.59±4.41 to 26.46±4.33 degrees(P=0.009) and ACV changed from 85.97±16.07mm3to 99.25±15.83mm3(P=0.000).The changes in ACD,CCT and intraocular pressure were non-significant(P>0.05).Gonioscopy showed significant widening of the Shaffer angle in 4 quadrants(P<0.001).CONCLUSION:Pentacam can serve as the objective instrument in assessing the efficacy of LI.
