Comparing rockfall hazard and risk assessment procedures along roads for different planning purposes

Hazard and risk assessment procedures of different types of rockfall were analyzed to compare their outcomes when they are applied to the same case *** numerous methodologies are available in literature,rockfall hazard and risk analyses are often limited to standard estimations,affected by a margin of uncertainty,especially when relevant engineering projects are about to be *** on the design purpose,different types of approaches can be chosen among the qualitative and quantitative ones available in literature,which allow different levels of *** of the main criticisms related to rockfall events is the risk affecting linear structures,such as road or railways,due both to their strategic relevance for trade and communications and to the great entity of the exposed value(traffic units)traveling along *** this perspective,a comparison between the qualitative method known as Evolving Rockfall Hazard Assessment(EHRA),the semi-quantitative modified Rockfall Hazard Rating System(RHRS)and the quantitative Rockfall Risk Management(RoMa)approach is herein commented according to a practical application to a case *** is the case of the rockfall threat along slopes crossed by a strategic road connecting two of the most known spots of eastern Sicily(Italy),at the Taormina tourist *** were retrieved from both recent literature and technical surveys on *** results highlight how the approaches are affected by a different level of detail and uncertainty,arising also by some necessary assumption that must be taken into account,especially when mitigation measures or territory planning have to be *** results can be also taken into account for similar studies worldwide,in order to choose the most suitable procedure based on the design *** is indeed crucial in the perspective of the optimization of time and economic resources in the territorial planning practice.

Objectives:This study aimed to test the association between of type and number of D'Amico high-risk criteria(DHRCs)with cancer-specific mortality(CSM)in high-risk prostate cancer patients treated with radical *** and methods:In the Surveillance,Epidemiology,and End Results database(2004–2016),we identified 31,281 radical prostatectomy patients with at least 1 DHRC,namely,prostate-specific antigen(PSA)>20 ng/mL(hrPSA),biopsy Gleason Grade Group(hrGGG)score of 4 and 5,or clinical tumor stage≥T3(hrcT).Multivariable Cox regression models and competing risks regression models(adjusting for other cause mortality)tested the association between DHRCs and 5-year ***:Of 31,281 patients,14,394(67%)exclusively harbored hrGGG,3189(15%)harbored hrPSA,and 1781(8.2%)harbored *** 2132 patients(6.8%)harbored a combination of the 2 DHRCs,and 138(0.6%)had all 3 ***-year CSMrates ranged from 0.9%to 3.0%when any individual DHRC was present(hrcT,hrPSA,and hrGGG,in that order),1.6%to 5.9%when 2 DHRCs were present(hrPSA-hrcT,hrcT-hrGGG,and hrPSA-hrGGG,in that order),and 8.1%when all 3 DHRCs were *** regression models and competing risks regression confirmed the independent predictor status of DHRCs for 5-year CSM that was observed in univariable analyses,with hazard ratios from 1.00 to 2.83 for 1 DHRC,2.35 to 5.88 for combinations of 2 DHRCs,and 7.13 for all 3 ***:Within individual DHRCs,hrcT and hrPSA exhibited weaker effects than hrGGG ***,a dose-response effect was identified according to the number of ***,the type and number of DHRCs allow further risk stratification within the high-risk subgroup.

Measurements of Non-reacting and Reacting Flow Fields of a Liquid Swirl Flame Burner

The understanding of the liquid fuel spray and flow field characteristics inside a combustor is crucial for designing a fuel efficient and low emission *** of the flow field of a model gas turbine liquid swirl burner is performed by using a2-D particle imaging velocimetry（PIV）*** flow field pattern of an axial flow burner with a fixed swirl intensity is compared under confined and unconfined conditions,i.e.,with and without the combustor *** effect of temperature on the main swirling air flow is investigated under open and non-reacting *** result shows that axial and radial velocities increase as a result of decreased flow density and increased flow *** flow field of the main swirling flow with liquid fuel spray injection is compared to non-spray swirling *** of liquid fuel spray changes the swirl air flow field at the burner outlet,where the radial velocity components increase for both open and confined *** reacting condition,the enclosure generates a corner recirculation zone that intensifies the strength of radial *** reverse flow and corner recirculation zone assists in stabilizing the flame by preheating the *** flow field data can be used as validation target for swirl combustion modelling.

A Bioinspired Robot Growing like Plant Roots

Plants are usually considered static organisms,but they can perform a wide range of movements that can be a source of inspiration for *** roots’growing motion is the most noteworthy since they are excellent diggers that can move in unstructured environments and navigate past ***,root growth has a high energy efficiency since it penetrates the soil at its tip,adding new material without displacing the already grown portion,minimizing the energy dissipation due to friction and lowering the inertia.A robot inspired by the growth of roots could be used in search and rescue or environmental *** design of a soft robot inspired by root growth is presented in this *** robot body consists of a cylindrical plastic membrane folded inside *** robot body is inflated,and its tip is everted,expanding its length as air is blown from the *** straps are placed on the membrane’s exterior surface to keep it *** head is positioned inside the tip,which houses the mechanism that controls the growth *** consists of housing for two balloons that are selectively inflated,and their expansion applies pressure on the exterior surface,opening the Velcro straps and determining the growth *** robot was constructed,and a kinematic model of its motion in the plane was created and compared with experimental *** error in predicting the turning angle is only 5%,and the resulting predicted position differs on average by 55 mm on a total length of 850 mm.

A combined technique of Kalman filter, artificial neural network and fuzzy logic for gas turbines and signal fault isolation

The target of this paper is the performance-based diagnostics of a gas turbine for the automated early detection of components malfunctions. The paper proposes a new combination of multiple methodologies for the performance-based diagnostics of single and multiple failures on a two-spool engine. The aim of this technique is to combine the strength of each methodology and provide a high success rate for single and multiple failures with the presence of measurement malfunctions. A combination of KF(Kalman Filter), ANN(Artificial Neural Network) and FL(Fuzzy Logic) is used in this research in order to improve the success rate, to increase the flexibility and the number of failures detected and to combine the strength of multiple methods to have a more robust solution. The Kalman filter has in his strength the measurement noise treatment, the artificial neural network the simulation and prediction of reference and deteriorated performance profile and the fuzzy logic the categorization flexibility, which is used to quantify and classify the failures. In the area of GT(Gas Turbine) diagnostics, the multiple failures in combination with measurement issues and the utilization of multiple methods for a 2-spool industrial gas turbine engine has not been investigated *** paper reports the key contribution of each component of the methodology and brief the results in the quantification and classification success rate. The methodology is tested for constant deterioration and increasing noise and for random deterioration. For the random deterioration and nominal noise of 0.4%, in particular, the quantification success rate is above 92.0%, while the classification success rate is above 95.1%. Moreover, the speed of the data processing(1.7 s/sample)proves the suitability of this methodology for online diagnostics.

Metabolite analysis or metabolomics is an important component of systems biology in the post-genomic *** separate liquid chromatography（LC） methods for quantification of the major classes of polar metabolites of plants have been available for decades,a single method that enables simultaneous determination of hundreds of polar metabolites is possible only with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry（GC-MS） *** rapid expansion of new LC stationary phases in the market and the ready access of mass spectrometry in many laboratories provides an excellent opportunity for developing LC-MS based methods for multitarget quantification of polar *** various LC-MS methods have been developed over the last 10 years with the aim to quantify one or more classes of polar compounds in different matrices,currently there is no consensus LC-MS method that is widely used in plant metabolomics *** most promising methods applicable to plant metabolite analysis will be reviewed in this paper and the major problems encountered *** aim of this review is to provide plant scientists,with limited to moderate experience in analytical chemistry,with up-to-date and simplified information regarding the current status of polar metabolite analysis using LC-MS techniques.

Egocentric social network correlates of physical activity

Background:The social environment might play an important role in explaining people’s physical activity(PA)***,little is known regarding whether personal networks differ between physically active and physically inactive *** study aimed to examine the relationship between personal network characteristics and adults’physical(in)***:An egocentric social network study was conducted in a random sample in Switzerland(n=529,mean age of 53 years,54%females).Individual and personal network measures were compared between regular exercisers and *** extent of these factors’association with PA levels was also ***:Non-exercisers(n=183)had 70%non-exercising individuals in their personal networks,indicating homogeneity,whereas regular exercisers(n=346)had 57%regularly exercising individuals in their networks,meaning more heterogeneous personal ***,having more regular exercisers in personal networks was associated with higher PA levels,over and above individual *** with an entirely active personal network reported,on average,1 day of PA more per week than respondents who had a completely inactive personal *** personal network characteristics,such as network size or gender composition,were not associated with ***:Non-exercisers seem to be clustered in inactive networks that provide fewer opportunities and resources,as well as less social support,for *** effectively promote PA,both individuals and personal networks need to be addressed,particularly the networks of inactive people(e.g.,by promoting group activities).

Methodological issues in the study of intestinal microbiota in irritable bowel syndrome

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is an intestinal functional disorder with the highest prevalence in the industrialized world. The intestinal microbiota (IM) plays a role in the pathogenesis of IBS and is not merely a consequence of this disorder. Previous research efforts have not revealed unequivocal microbiological signatures of IBS, and the experimental results are contradictory. The experimental methodologies adopted to investigate the complex intestinal ecosystem drastically impact the quality and significance of the results. Therefore, to consider the methodological aspects of the research on IM in IBS, we reviewed 29 relevant original research articles identified through a PubMed search using three combinations of keywords: “irritable bowel syndrome + microflora”, “irritable bowel syndrome + microbiota” and “irritable bowel syndrome + microbiome”. For each study, we reviewed the quality and significance of the scientific evidence obtained with respect to the experimental method adopted. The data obtained from each study were compared with all considered publications to identify potential inconsistencies and explain contradictory results. The analytical revision of the studies referenced in the present review has contributed to the identification of microbial groups whose relative abundance significantly alters IBS, suggesting that these microbial groups could be IM signatures for this syndrome. The identification of microbial biomarkers in the IM can be advantageous for the development of new diagnostic tools and novel therapeutic strategies for the treatment of different subtypes of IBS.

A PARALLEL ALGORITHM FOR THE SOLUTION OF LARGE-SCALE NONCONFORMING FLUID-STRUCTURE INTERACTION PROBLEMS IN HEMODYNAMICS

In this work we address the numerical solution of large scale fluid-structure interaction problems when nonconforming grids and/or nonconforming finite elements discretizations are used at the interface separating the fluid and structure physical domains. To deal with nonconforming fluid-structure discretizations we use the INTERNODES method （INTER- polation for NOnconforming DEcompositionS） formerly introduced in [6] for the solution of elliptic PDEs on nonconforming domain decomposition. To cope with the high com- putational complexity of the three dimensional FSI problem obtained after spatial and temporal discretization, we use the block parallel preconditioner FaCSI [7]. A numerical investigation of the accuracy properties of INTERNODES applied to the nonconforming FSI problem is carried out for the simulation of the pressure wave propagation in a straight elastic cylinder. Finally, we study the scalability performance of the FaCSI precondition- er in the nonconforming case by solving a large-scale nonconforming FSI problem in a patient-specific arterial bypass.
