Type 2 diabetes mellitus(T2D)is an increasingly prevalent disease with numerous comorbidities including many in the spine.T2D is strongly linked with vertebral fractures,intervertebral disc(IVD)degeneration,and severe chronic spinal *** the causative mechanism for these musculoskeletal impairments remains *** chronic hyperglycemic state in T2D promotes the formation of advanced glycation end-products(AGEs)in tissues,and the accumulation of AGEs may play a role in musculoskeletal complications by modifying the extracellular matrix,impairing cellular homeostasis,and perpetuating an inflammatory cascade via its receptor(RAGE).The AGE and RAGE associated alterations in extracellular matrix composition and morphological features of the vertebral bodies and IVDs are likely contributors to the incidence and severity of spinal pathologies in *** review will broadly examine the effects of AGEs on tissues in the spine in the context of T2D,with an emphasis on the changes in the vertebrae and the *** with the clinical and epidemiological findings,we will provide an overview of preclinical rodent models of T2D that exhibit deficits in the IVD and vertebral *** the role of AGEs and RAGE will be crucial for understanding the disease mechanisms and translation therapies of musculoskeletal pathologies in T2D.

BACKGROUND：In Hong Kong, the reorganization of healthcare frame work for better utilization of resources has led to an increase in the frequency of inter-facility transport in recent years. An Inter-Facility Transport Triage Guideline （IFTTG） was introduced and evaluated on its compliance and performance. This study aimed to evaluate the compliance to the IFTTG and performance of inter-facility transport after the IFTTG was implemented. METHODS： The patients who required emergency IFT with accompanying personnel in two consecutive periods （pre-implementation period： January 1,2006 to April 30, 2006; post-implementation period： May 1,2006 to August 31,2006） were included. The compliance to pre-transport triage and transport team configuration was evaluated by a review panel with eight performance indicators identified. The performance indicators were compared individually and as an overall score. RESULTS：Sixty-eight （26 in the pre-implementation period and 42 in the post-implementation period） IFTs were reviewed. There was demonstrable improvement on compliance to the IFTTG. The appropriateness of pre-transport triage increased from 34.6% to 54.8% whereas appropriateness of transport team configuration rose significantly from 73.1% to 92.9% （P〈0.05）. Staff performance on individual IFT performance indicator was satisfactory in both periods and the means of overall score on performance indicators were 7.12 and 7.29 respectively. The most improved performance indicator was the appropriateness of transport team configuration. CONCLUSIONS： The compliance and performance with the newly implemented IFTTG were satisfactory. However, staff comment and satisfaction with the use of the new guideline should be collected so as to achieve continuous quality improvement.

Understanding antibiotic biodegradation is important to the appreciation of their fate and removal from the environment. In this research an Isotope Ratio Mass Spectrometry（IRMS）method was developed to evaluate the extent of biodegradation of the antibiotic,sulphanilamide, in contaminated groundwater. Results indicted an enrichment in δ^（13）C of8.44‰ from-26.56（at the contaminant source） to-18.12‰（300 m downfield of the source）.These results confirm reductions in sulphanilamide concentrations（from 650 to 10 mg/L）across the contaminant plume to be attributable to biodegradation（56%） vs. other natural attenuation processes, such as dilution or dispersion（42%）. To understand the controls on sulphanilamide degradation ex-situ microcosms assessed the influence of sulphanilamide concentration, redox conditions and an alternative carbon source. Results indicated, high levels of anaerobic capacity（~50% mineralisation） to degrade sulphanilamide under high（263 mg/L）, moderate（10 mg/L） and low（0.02 mg/L） substrate concentrations. The addition of electron acceptors; nitrate and sulphate, did not significantly enhance the capacity of the groundwater to anaerobically biodegrade sulphanilamide. Interestingly, where alternative carbon sources were present, the addition of nitrate and sulphate inhibited sulphanilamide biodegradation. These results suggest, under in-situ conditions, when a preferential carbon source was available for biodegradation, sulphanilamide could be acting as a nitrogen and/or sulphur source. These findings are important as they highlight sulphanilamide being used as a carbon and a putative nitrogen and sulphur source, under prevailing iron reducing conditions.

Correlation between precipitates evolution and mechanical properties of Al-Sc-Zr alloy with Er additions during isothermal ageing were investigated by microhardness measurements,transmission electron microscopy,atom probe tomography and density functional theory-based *** results demonstrate that the Er additions significantly improve the hardness during elevated temperature ageing,especially at 400℃.This is mainly because Er additions increase the nucleation rate of the Al_(3)(Er,Sc,Zr)precipitates,resulting in a higher density of fine and uniform dispersion of L1_(2)structured ***-principles calculations demonstrate that the second nearest neighboring solute-solute interactions for the species Sc,Zr and Er are energetically favored–a key feature to rationalize the observed precipitate structure and the underlying formation *** sequential formation of the core/shell precipitates in the Er-free alloy and core/double-shell precipitates in the Er-containing alloy arises due to the different solute-solute and solute-vacancy interaction energies,and the relative diffusivities of the Er,Sc and Zr species in *** results shed light on the beneficial effects of Er additions on the agehardening behavior of Al-Sc-Zr alloy and provide guidance for designing the ageing treatments for the Al-Sc-Zr(-Er)alloys.

Objective To investigate the virulence characteristics of two fixed strains （CTN and aG） and a street strain （HNIO） of rabies viruses isolated in China, Methods ICR mice of different age groups were via the intracracerebral （i.c.） or intramuscular （i.m inoculated with CTN, aG and HN10 rabies virus strains ） routes, and observed for 20 days. Results The CTN strain was pathogenic to 7-day-old suckling mice that received i.c. inoculations and 3-day-old suckling mice that received i.m. inoculations. The aG strain was pathogenic to 4-week-old mice that received i.c. inoculations and 7-day-old suckling mice that received i.m. inoculations. The HN10 strain was pathogenic to mice of all age groups via both inoculation routes. In moribund mice, the viruses had spread to most regions of the brain. The CTN and HN10 strains had similar dissemination patterns in the brain; both viral antigens could be found in the dentate gyrus （DG）, whereas few viral antigens were present in the DG from specimens that had been infected with the aG strain. Conclusion A comprehensive sequence analysis of the G protein suggested that differences in gene sequences may be responsible for producing strain-specific differences in pathogenicity and distribution in the brain.

Factors Influencing the Number of Rabies Cases in Children in China

To understand the epidemic situation and factors influencing rabies cases in children in China, we obtained an overview of the current epidemic based on individual data of rabies cases in children and a descriptive analysis was carried on the prevalence and related factors. The results showed that the rabies cases in children accounted for 21.3% of the total number of rabies cases in China, 97.0% of these cases occurred in rural areas, they were mainly caused by dogs （81.5%）, and were primarily level Ill exposure （47.7%）. More than half of the cases were not treated with wound care, vaccination rate was extremely low （15.7%）, and only 5.9% of cases were injected with antibodies. Furthermore, 25.4% of cases adopted incorrect treatments such as extruding bleed and wound closure, cases vaccinated with 5 injections acco- unted for only 22.5%. In conclusion, the prevalence of rabies cases in children in China remains a serious concern, the number and immune status of dogs in rural areas, and knowledge of rabies by risk populations should be considered in future rabies prevention and control programs.

This paper presents a novel consensus clustering(CC)approach for a document repository concerning power substations(PSD)and contributes to the intangible asset management of power systems.A domain ontology model,i.e.,substation ontology(SONT),is applied to modify the traditional vector space model(VSM)for document representation,which is concerned with the semantic relationship between terms.A new document representation is generated using a term mutual information matrix with the aid of *** addition,compared with two other novel CC algorithms,i.e.,non-negative matrix factorisation-based CC(NNMF-CC)and information theory-based CC(INT-CC),weighted partition via kernel-based CC algorithm(WPK-CC)is utilised to solve the CC issue for ***,genetic algorithms(GA)were applied to WPK-CC for PSD,as there are limitations in the original WPK-CC for document ***,selected mechanisms in each GA’s procedure are compared and improved,resulting in comprehensive parameter settings for the PSD *** simulation studies have been designed,in which the results are evaluated by purity validation method and show that the SONT-based document representation and improved WPK-CC,via modified GA,significantly improve the performance of the PSD CC.

Molecular Characterization of China Human Rabies Vaccine Strains

To understand the molecular characteristics of China human rabies vaccine strains, we report the full-length genome of the aG strain and present a comprehensive analysis of this strain and almost all available lyssavirus genomes （58 strains） from GenBank （as of Jan 6, 2011）. It is generally considered that the G protein plays a predominant role in determining the pathogenicity of the virus, to this end we predicted the tertiary structure of the G protein of aG strain, CTN 181 strain and wild type strain HN 10 based on the crystal structure of Vesicular stomatitis virus （VSV） G. The predicted RABV G structure has a similar topology to VSV G and the ectodomain can be divided into 4 distinct domains DI - DIV. By mapping the characterized mutations to this structure between China vaccine strains and their close street strains, we speculate that the G303（P-H） mutations of CTN181 and HN10 causing D II 3D change may be associated with the attenuated virulence in both strains. Specifically, the two signature mutations （G165P and G231P） in the aG strain are withinβsheets, suggesting that both sites are of structural importance.
