The development of 3D spiral microfluidics has opened new avenues for leveraging inertial focusing to analyze small fluid volumes,thereby advancing research across chemical,physical,and biological *** traditional straight microchannels rely solely on inertial lift forces,the novel spiral geometry generates Dean drag forces,eliminating the necessity for external fields in fluid ***,fabricating 3D spiral microfluidics remains a labor-intensive and costly endeavor,hindering its widespread ***,conventional lithographic methods primarily yield 2D planar devices,thereby limiting the selection of materials and geometrical *** address these challenges,this work introduces a streamlined fabrication method for 3D spiral microfluidic devices,employing rotational force within a miniaturized thermal drawing process,termed as *** innovation allows for rapid prototyping of twisted fiber-based microfluidics featuring versatility in material selection and heightened geometric *** validate the performance of these devices,we combined computational modeling with microtomographic particle image velocimetry(uTPiM)to comprehensively characterize the 3D flow *** results corroborate the presence of a steady secondary flow,underscoring the effectiveness of our *** 3D spiral microfluidics platform paves the way for exploring intricate microflow dynamics,with promising applications in areas such as drug delivery,diagnostics,and lab-on-a-chip systems.

Biological removal of selenate in saline wastewater by activated sludge under alternating anoxic/oxic conditions

Selenium (Se)-containing industrial wastewater is often coupled with notable salinity. However, limited studies have examined biological treatment of Se-containing wastewater under high salinity conditions. In this study, a sequencing batch reactor (SBR) inoculated with activated sludge was applied to treat selenate in synthetic saline wastewater (3% w/v NaCl) supplemented with lactate as the carbon source. Start-up of the SBR was performed with addition of 1–5 mM of selenate under oxygen-limiting conditions, which succeeded in removing more than 99% of the soluble Se. Then, the treatment of 1 mM Se with cycle duration of 3 days was carried out under alternating anoxic/oxic conditions by adding aeration period after oxygen-limiting period. Although the SBR maintained soluble Se removal of above 97%, considerable amount of solid Se remained in the effluent as suspended solids and total Se removal fluctuated between about 40 and 80%. Surprisingly, the mass balance calculation found a considerable decrease of Se accumulated in the SBR when the aeration period was prolonged to 7 h, indicating very efficient Se biovolatilization. Furthermore, microbial community analysis suggested that various Se-reducing bacteria coordinately contributed to the removal of Se in the SBR and main contributors varied depending on the operational conditions. This study will offer implications for practical biological treatment of selenium in saline wastewater.

Who needs further evaluations to diagnose upper urinary tract urothelial cancers among patients with abnormal findings by enhanced CT?

Objective:We evaluated who would need further evaluations such as retrograde pyelography(RP)and/or ureteroscopy to diagnose upper urinary tract urothelial cancers(UUTUCs)when abnormal findings for the upper urinary tract(UUT)were detected by enhanced computed tomography(CT).Methods:We retrospectively analyzed 125 patients who underwent enhanced CT for various reasons and had abnormal findings for the *** whose tumors were suspected to be of extraureteral origin were *** patients received RP and/or ureteroscopy to evaluate the ***:The median age of the 125 patients was 70 years and gross hematuria(26.4%)was the most frequently observed ***,ureteroscopy and both were performed for 121,59 and 55 patients,*** revealed tumor-like lesions in 58 patients and the other patients had non-tumor-like *** were found in 43(34.4%)of the 125 *** of them had tumor-like lesions on *** 58 patients who had tumor-like lesions on CT,univariate and multivariate analyses revealed that tumor diameter and tumor enhancement were significant predictive factors for *** curve analysis of enhanced CT to diagnose UUTUCs revealed that a tumor diameter of 18 mm was the best cutoff *** sensitivity,specificity and accuracy were 90.0%,98.8% and 92.7% for RP and 95.5%,100% and 97.1%for ureteroscopy,*** of them had high sensitivity,specificity and ***:We should decide to evaluate the UUT according to the tumor diameter on enhanced *** we evaluate the UUT in patients with tumor diameters of less than 20 mm,ureteroscopy is recommended.

Production of Sucrose Crystals of Uni-Modal Size Distribution by Seeded Batch Cooling Crystallization

From sucrose aqueous solution of high viscosity, sucrose was crystallized by seeded cooling in a batch crystallizer. At low seed loadings, the product crystal size distribution (CSD) was wide-spread because of enormous secondary and primary nucleation. However, at high seed loadings, it became uni-modal, where the crystallization was dominated by seed growth with practically no secondary nucleation. Enough seeding was thus effective in suppressing nucleation even during batch crystallization with high viscosity solution. The volume mean size of the product crystals obtained at high seed loadings agreed with that calculated by a simple mass balance assuming growth-dominated crystallization with no change in the number of crystals.

Why is endosonography insufficient for residual diagnosis after neoadjuvant therapy for esophageal cancer?Solutions using muscle layer evaluation

Development of a Muon Rotating Target for J-PARC/MUSE

At the J-PARC muon science facility （J-PARC/MUSE）, a graphite target with 20-mm thickness has been used in vacuum to obtain an intense pulsed muon beam from the RCS 3-GeV proton beam [1]. In the current design, the target frame is constructed using copper with a stainless steel tube embedded for water cooling. The energy deposited by the proton beam at 1MW is evaluated to be 3.3 kW on the graphite target and 600 W on the copper frame by a Monte-Carlo simulation code, PHITS [2]. Graphite materials are known to lose their crystal structure and can be shrunk by the intense proton beam irradiation. Consequently, the lifetime of the muon target is essentially determined by the radiation damage in graphite, and is evaluated to be half a year [3]. Hence, we are planning to distribute the radiation damage by rotating a graphite wheel. Although the lifetime of graphite in this case will be more than 10 years, the design of the bearing must be carefully considered. Because the bearing in J-PARC/MUSE is utilized in vacuum, under high radiation, and in high temperature, an inorganic and solid lubricant must be applied on the bearing. Simultaneously, the temperature at the bearing must be also decreased to extend the lifetime. In 2009, a mock-up of the Muon Rotating Target, which could heat up and rotate a graphite wheel, was fabricated and then several tests were started to select the lubricant, and to decide the structure of the Muon Rotating Target, the control system and so on. In this presentation, the present status of the Muon Rotating Target for J-PARC/MUSE, especially the development of a rotation system in vacuum, will be described.

Treatment strategy for gastric non-invasive intraepithelial neoplasia diagnosed by endoscopic biopsy

Treatment strategies,whether as follow-up or"total incisional biopsy"for gastric noninvasive intraepithelial neoplasia diagnosed by examination of an endoscopic forceps biopsy specimen,are controversial due to problems associated with the diagnostic accuracy of endoscopic forceps biopsy and questions about the safety and efficacy of endoscopic *** on the histological findings of the biopsy specimen,it is difficult to differentiate between reactive or regenerative changes,inflammation and neoplastic changes,intraepithelial and invasive ***,gastric neoplasia diagnosed as noninvasive intraepithelial often develop into invasive carcinoma during *** advances in endoscopic modalities and treatment devices,such as image-enhanced endoscopy and highfrequency generators,may make endoscopic treatment,such as endoscopic submucosal dissection(ESD),a therapeutic option for gastric intraepithelial neoplasia,including low-grade *** studies are required to evaluate whether ESD is a valid strategy for gastric intraepithelial neoplasm with regard to safety and cost effectiveness.
