Inhalation of Cananga odorata essential oil relieves anxiety behaviors in autism-like rats via regulation of serotonin and dopamine metabolism

Objective:Anxiety is one of the most common symptoms associated with autistic spectrum disorder.The essential oil of Cananga odorata(Lam.)Hook.f.&Thomson,usually known as ylang-ylang oil(YYO),is often used in aromatherapy as a mood-regulating agent,sedative,or hypotensive agent.In the present study,the effects and mechanisms of YYO in alleviating anxiety,social and cognitive behaviors in autism-like rats were investigated.Methods:The prenatal valproic acid(VPA)model was used to induce autism-like behaviors in offspring rats.The effectiveness of prenatal sodium valproate treatment(600 mg/kg)on offspring was shown by postnatal growth observation,and negative geotaxis,olfactory discrimination and Morris water maze(MWM)tests.Then three treatment groups were formed with varying exposure to atomized YYO to explore the effects of YYO on the anxiety,social and cognitive behaviors of the autistic-like offspring through the elevated plus-maze test,three-chamber social test,and MWM test.Finally,the monoamine neurotransmitters,including serotonin,dopamine and their metabolites,in the hippocampus and prefrontal cortex(PFC)of the rats were measured using a high-performance liquid chromatography.Results:Offspring of VPA exposure rats showed autism-like behaviors.In the VPA offspring,mediumdose YYO exposure significantly elevated the time and entries into the open arms in the elevated plusmaze test,while low-dose YYO exposure significantly enhanced the social interaction time with the stranger rat in session 1 of the three-chamber social test.VPA offspring treated with YYO exposure used less time to reach the platform in the navigation test of the MWM test.YYO exposure significantly elevated the metabolism of serotonin and dopamine in the PFC of VPA offspring.Conclusion:YYO exposure showed the effects in alleviating anxiety and improving cognitive and social abilities in the offspring of VPA exposure rats.The role of YYO was related to the regulation of the metabolism of serotonin and dopamine.

Should ocular Demodex be checked and treated in refractory keratitis patients without blepharitis?

AIM:To evaluate the correlation between Demodex infestation and keratitis,and to assess demodicosis using a simple approach.METHODS:A modified slit lamp illumination(at 40×magnification)was used to observe Demodex tails in 40patients with refractory keratitis and 80 healthy controls.Bacterial smear and culture of the conjunctival sac and corneal lesion were performed to identify the pathogen.Tea tree oil ointment(TTOO)was added as a Demodex killing agent for lid scrubs to the treatment when Demodex infestation was confirmed.RESULTS:Demodex tails were found in all patients compared to 42/80 of the controls(P<0.01).Seventeen patients presented blepharitis,while 23 were free of scales and inflammation at the lid margin.The demodicosis was mild,moderate,and severe in 8,19,and 13 patients,respectively,compared to mild in 42 controls(P<0.01).The keratitis was mild,moderate,and severe in 13,19,and 8patients,respectively.The severity of Demodex infestation was not correlated to the severity of keratitis(P=0.126).The growth of Staphylococcus was revealed in nine patients who did not react to antibiotic eye drops prior to the TTOO treatment.Patients’signs and symptoms got resolved after the lid scrub with TTOO.CONCLUSION:Ocular Demodex needs to be checked and treated in refractory keratitis patients with or without blepharitis.A slit-lamp illumination under high magnification favors the judgment of the severity of Demodex infestation.

Plastic deformation of magnesium alloy with different forming parameters during ultrasonic vibration-assisted single-point incremental forming

The research of forming parameters on the ultrasonic vibration single-point incremental forming of magnesium alloy plastic deformation can provide a theoretical basis for the establishment of the forming parameters.According to the forming characteristics of magnesium alloy sheet,a new method of ultrasonic vibration-as sis ted single-point incremental forming was proposed.The influence of forming parameters on the plastic deformation of magnesium alloy was studied by finite element simulation and experimentation.The influence of vibration frequency,amplitude,friction coefficient,and tool head size on stress and thinning rate of magnesium alloy during ultrasonic vibration-as sis ted single-point asymptotic forming was studied.The results show that the vibration frequency of 20 kHz and forming tool radius of about 5 mm are beneficial for plastic deformation magnesium alloy in ultrasonic vibration-assisted single-point incremental forming.With vibration amplitude increasing,the maximum shear stress tends to decrease as a whole,but at the amplitude of 0.16 mm,the thinning rate is large and fracture occurs easily.With friction coefficient increasing,the maximum shear stress tends to increase,and there is a good linear relationship between the maximum thinning rate and the friction coefficient.

Cytokines and inflammation in adipogenesis:an updated review

The biological relevance of cytokines is known for more than 20 years.Evidence suggests that adipogenesis is one of the biological events involved in the regulation of cytokines,and pro-inflammatory cytokines (e.g.,TNFα and IL-1β)inhibit adipogenesis through various pathways.This inhibitory effect can constrain the hyperplastic expandability of adipose tissues.Meanwhile,chronic low-grade inflammation is commonly observed in obese populations.In some individuals,the impaired ability of adipose tissues to recruit new adipocytes to adipose depots during overnutrition results in adipocyte hypertrophy,ectopic lipid accumulation,and insulin resistance.Intervention studies showed that pro-inflammatory cytokine antagonists improve metabolism in patients with metabolic syndrome.This review focuses on the cytokines currently known to regulate adipogenesis under physiological and pathophysiological circumstances.Recent studies on how inhibited adipogenesis leads to metabolic disorders were summarized.Although the interplay of cytokines and lipid metabolism is yet incompletely understood,cytokines represent a class of potential therapeutic targets in the treatment of metabolic disorders.

Enhanced piezo-catalysis in ZnO rods with built-in nanopores

Strategies to improve the efficiency of piezoelectric catalysis have long focused on piezo-optical coupling and construction of heterojunctions.However,it is a challenge to reinforce the performance of piezoelectric catalysis in a single material.Herein the built-in nanopores in single crystal ZnO rods are employed to form stress to intensify piezo-catalytic efficiency.The piezo-catalytic efficiency of the ZnO rods with built-in nanopores(holey ZnO NRs)for degrading dyes was about 1.7 times that of the ZnO rods without built-in nanopores(ZnO NRs).X-ray diffraction and Raman peaks of holey ZnO NRs appeared blue-shifted in comparison to ZnO NRs,uncovering the existence of tensile stress in holey ZnO NRs.The piezoelectric coefficient d_(33) of holey ZnO NRs increased by 1.92 times,triggering the amplification of piezoelectric catalytic property.Additionally,the piezoelectric current,carrier lifetime,and diffusion length of holey ZnO NRs were larger than that of ZnO NRs,respectively.These factors all contribute to the enhanced piezoelectric catalytic efficiency of holey ZnO NRs.This work demonstrates that the method of induced stress with built-in nanopores is a promising strategy for improving the piezoelectric catalytic efficiency of single-crystal ZnO rods.

Environmental DNA(eDNA)integrated with metabarcoding is a promising and powerful tool for species composition and biodiversity assessment in aquatic ecosystems and is increasingly applied to evaluate fish diversity.To date,however,no standardized eDNA-based protocol has been established to monitor fish diversity.In this study,we investigated and compared two filtration methods and three DNA extraction methods using three filtration water volumes to determine a suitable approach for eDNA-based fish diversity monitoring in the Pearl River Estuary(PRE),a highly anthropogenically disturbed estuarine ecosystem.Compared to filtration-based precipitation,direct filtration was a more suitable method for eDNA metabarcoding in the PRE.The combined use of DNeasy Blood and Tissue Kit(BT)and traditional phenol/chloroform(PC)extraction produced higher DNA yields,amplicon sequence variants(ASVs),and Shannon diversity indices,and generated more homogeneous and consistent community composition among replicates.Compared to the other combined protocols,the PC and BT methods obtained better species detection,higher fish diversity,and greater consistency for the filtration water volumes of 1000 and 2000 mL,respectively.All eDNA metabarcoding protocols were more sensitive than bottom trawling in the PRE fish surveys and combining two techniques yielded greater taxonomic diversity.Furthermore,combining traditional methods with eDNA analysis enhanced accuracy.These results indicate that methodological decisions related to eDNA metabarcoding should be made with caution for fish community monitoring in estuarine ecosystems.

Undesorbable residual gas in coal seams and its influence on gas drainage

The definition of ‘‘residual gas" can be found in different scenarios, such as the ‘‘fast" and ‘‘slow" desorption methods of measuring gas content and the sorption hysteresis test and gas management of coal mines, however, its meaning varies a lot in different contexts. The main aim of this paper is to discuss the existence of truly undesorbable residual gas in coal seam conditions and its impacts on sorption model and gas drainage efficiency. We believe the undesorbable residual gas does exist due to the observation of the extended slow desorption test and the sorption hysteresis test. The origin of undesorbable residual gas may be because of the inaccessible(closed or semi-closed) pores. Some gas molecules produced during coalification are stored in these inaccessible pores, since the coal is relatively intact in the coal seam condition, these gas molecules cannot escape during natural desorption and then create the undesorbable residual gas. Based on the existing adsorption models, we propose the improved desorption versions by taking into consideration the role of residual gas. By numerically simulating a gas drainage case, the gas contents after different drainage times are studied to understand the influence of residual gas content on gas drainage. The results indicate that the influence starts to be obvious even when the total gas content is at a high level, and the impact becomes more and more apparent with increasing drainage time. Our study shows that the existence of residual gas will impede the gas drainage and the total amount of recoverable coal seam methane may be less than expected.

Characterization of the chemical constituents of Jie-Geng-Tang and the metabolites in the serums and lungs of mice after oral administration by LC-Q-TOF-MS

Jie-Geng-Tang(JGT),a traditional formula,is employed in the treatment of sore throat and cough and comprises Platycodonis Radix and Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma in the ratio 1:2.Our previous study demonstrated that JGT protected mice from S.aureus-induced acute lung injury(ALI).Five constituents of JGT showed antibacterial activities against S.aureus in vitro.However,the potential effective constituents of JGT in vivo were still unclear.In this study,the chemical constituents of JGT were identified by liquid chromatography with quadrupole time-of-flight spectrometry(LC-Q-TOF-MS).A total of 96 constituents were identified or assumed,including seven organic acids,45 flavonoids,36 triterpene saponins,and eight compounds of other types.The structures of 31 of the constituents were confirmed by comparing them with corresponding authentic standards.Moreover,15 prototypes and 49 metabolites were deduced in the serums of mice,24 prototypes and 47 metabolites were deduced in the lungs of mice after the oral administration of JGT.Three types of constituents,namely organic acids,flavonoids,and triterpene saponins,could be absorbed into the blood.Moreover,flavonoids and triterpene saponins were more likely distributed in the lung than in the blood.To the best of our knowledge,this is the first report on the systematic metabolites profile of JGT in vivo.The results reported were beneficial to the elucidation of the effective material basis of JGT.

Facile one-pot synthesis of PEGylated monodisperse mesoporous silica nanoparticles with controllable particle sizes

In this work, we describe the one-pot synthesis of PEGylated mesoporous silica nanoparticles （MSNs） with uniform shape, tunable sizes, and narrow size distributions. The size of these nanoparticles can be controlled from 49 nm to 98 nm by simply varying the concentration oftriethanolamine during the base- catalyzed sol-gel reaction. Particles were characterized by transmission electron microscopy, dynamic light scattering, Fourier transform infrared spectrometry, thermogravimetric analysis, and nitrogen adsorption-desorption measurements. These PEGylated MSNs exhibited excellent long-term stability in biological media, which ensures their potential applications in drug delivery.

Subspace-Based Method for Direction Finding of Multiple Partially Polarized Signals

We investigate the problem of direction finding for multiple Partially polarized(PP) electromagnetic signals, each of which possesses two spatial degrees of freedom. We use a uniform linear array of L sensors, where each consists of two co-located single-polarized elements.By exploiting the array geometry and its shift invariance property, we construct a set of data correlation sequences using the array output and its conjugate to transform the problem of direction finding to that of the estimation of complex sinusoid frequencies. The rank-2 signal correlation matrices of the PP signals become real-valued amplitudes of complex sinusoids, and thus, the rank-2 K signal subspace of the array output transforms to the rank-K signal subspace of the constructed correlation sequences. We show that only L = K + 1 sensors are needed to resolve K PP signals by solving the problem of estimation of sinusoid frequencies using subspace-based methods. The proposed method is also applicable to the scenario, where both Completely polarized(CP) and PP signals coexist, without the need of any prior information on the degree of polarization of the signal.
