Implications for fault reactivation and seismicity induced by hydraulic fracturing

Evaluating the physical mechanisms that link hydraulic fracturing(HF) operations to induced earthquakes and the anticipated form of the resulting events is significant in informing subsurface fluid injection operations. Current understanding supports the overriding role of the effective stress magnitude in triggering earthquakes, while the impact of change rate of effective stress has not been systematically addressed. In this work, a modified critical stiffness was brought up to investigate the likelihood, impact,and mitigation of induced seismicity during and after hydraulic fracturing by developing a poroelastic model based on rate-and-state fraction law and linear stability analysis. In the new criterion, the change rate of effective stress was considered a key variable to explore the evolution of this criterion and hence the likelihood of instability slip of fault. A coupled fluid flow-deformation model was used to represent the entire hydraulic fracturing process in COMSOL Multiphysics. The possibility of triggering an earthquake throughout the entire hydraulic fracturing process, from fracturing to cessation, was investigated considering different fault locations, orientations, and positions along the fault. The competition between the effects of the magnitude and change rate of effective stress was notable at each fracturing stage. The effective stress magnitude is a significant controlling factor during fracturing events, with the change rate dominating when fracturing is suddenly started or stopped. Instability dominates when the magnitude of the effective stress increases(constant injection at each fracturing stage) and the change rate of effective stress decreases(the injection process is suddenly stopped). Fracturing with a high injection rate, a fault adjacent to the hydraulic fracturing location and the position of the junction between the reservoir and fault are important to reduce the Coulomb failure stress(CFS) and enhance the critical stiffness as

Chemical Investigation of Potassium Methyl Siliconate as Deacidification and Strengthening Agent for Preservation of Aged Papers

Potassium methyl siliconate （PMS） was investigated as a simple physicochemical modification in aged paper using silane coupling technique. The PMS-based solution was shown to favor penetration in the cellulose fibers on the paper with suitable uptakes being achieved at low concentrations. The studies of the physicochemical properties of the treated paper （mechanical strength and alkalinity） demonstrated that, besides the required deacidification feature and high level of alkali reserves, the immersion treatment by PMS allowed the enhancement of the mechanical intensities of paper arising from the interaction between Si--OH generated in hydrolysis of PMS and C--OH of cellulose on the paper. Adding ethanol into PMS solution could significantly improve mechanical properties of the aged paper treated by the formula apart from modifying the flatness of the paper. Optimized treatment process was achieved by altering the ratio of ethanol to water in PMS-based solutions. Contact angle measurements indicated the occurrence of hydrophobic character of the papers in immersion treatment with PMS-based solutions. The easy availability of the materials and simplicity of the method rendered it convenient for treatment for aged paper documents.

Fully distributed dynamic event-triggered formation-containment tracking for multiagent systems with multiple types of disturbances

This paper is dedicated to addressing the time-varying output formation-containment tracking(TVOFCT) problem for heterogeneous linear multiagent systems(MASs) with multiple types of disturbances under directed communication *** agents are divided into tracking leaders,formation leaders,and *** the output space,the formation leaders are required to form an expected geometric formation while tracking the tracking leader,and the followers are required to enter the convex hull spanned by formation ***,a disturbance observer is designed to observe the disturbance with deterministic ***,by combining adaptive technology with event-triggered technology,an independent fully distributed dynamic event-triggered(FDDET) compensator is designed to estimate the state of the tracking *** main advantages of this compensator lie in the following three aspects:(1) the adaptive weight does not increase unboundedly;(2) the interval time between events is expanded;(3) the design does not rely on any global *** to the design of this compensator,an independent FDDET convex hull observer is further designed to observe the convex hull spanned by formation ***,based on the designed disturbance observer,compensator,and convex hull observer,the adaptive disturbance rejection control input which can make the MASs achieve TVOFCT is ***,a numerical simulation is provided to clearly verify the validity of the theoretical results.

Discovery of the choristodere Hyphalosaurus baitaigouensis from the Lower Cretaceous Jiufotang Formation of western Liaoning,China and its paleobiogeographic significance

The water-living reptile genus Hyphalosaurus was previously discovered in the Lower Cretaceous Yixian Formation bearing the middle Jehol Biota in western Liaoning, China. Two complete skeletons of Hyphalosaurus are reported for the first time from the Jiufotang Formation bearing the late Jehol Biota at two sites in western Liaoning. They show the typical characteristics of Hyphalosaurus baitaigouensis in terms of the contact between some cranial bones and the number of cervical and dorsal vertebrae, and therefore are assigned to H. baitaigouensis. This discovery extends the stratigraphic range of this species from the Yixian Formation to the overlying Jiufotang Formation. This paper further briefly compares the main characteristics of the two skeletons, summarizes the temporal and spatial distribution of Hyphalosaurus, and discusses the palaeogeographic evolution of western Liaoning at the middle and late Jehol Biota stages based on the aquatic habits of Hyphalosaurus and the geological background of western Liaoning. The analytical results show that the volcanic downwarped lakes, with distinct geographical divisions in western Liaoning during the deposition of the Yixian Formation, had not completely disappeared till the deposition of the Jiufotang Formation. The palaeo-lake in the Fuxin-Yixian Basin underwent the process of generation, expansion and shrinkage during the depositional period of the Yixian Formation and finally merged into a large lake. The palaeo-Dalinghe River,which connected the main basins in western Liaoning during the depositional period of the Jiufotang Formation, was formed simultaneously.

Cu-substituted nickel hexacyanoferrate with tunable reaction potentials for superior ammonium ion storage

In this work,a variety of Cu_(x)Ni_(2-x)Fe(CN)_(6)(x=0,0.4,0.8,1.2,1.6,2)cathodes for ammonium ion batteries are prepared and their electrochemical performances are *** the introduction of copper in nickel hexacyanoferrate,the electrochemical performance varies without changing the structure of nickel *** increase of Cu content in nickel hexacyanoferrate leads to the enhancement of reaction potential and *** results suggest that the substitution of Cu for Ni has a positive effect on improving the cycling stability and rate capacity of nickel hexacyanoferrate when x in Cu_(x)Ni_(2-x)Fe(CN)_(6)is less than ***,Cu_(0.4)Ni_(1.6)Fe(CN)_(6)exhibits the best cycling per-formance(capacity retention of 97.54%at 0.3 C)and the highest rate capacity(41.4 mAh g^(-1)at 10 C)in Cu_(x)Ni_(2-x)Fe(CN)_(6).Additionally,the X-ray diffraction(XRD)and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS)tests also reveal that the structural evolution of Cu_(0.4)Ni_(1.6)Fe(CN)_(6)is highly reversible upon NH_(4)^(+)***,this work proposes a candidate material for ammoniumion batteries and offers a novel avenue for adjusting the operating potential of the material.
