Treatment of tannery wastewater by electrocoagulation

Treatment of tannery wastewater by electrocoagulation with low cell current （≤ 1A） and soluble electrodes （mild steel electrodes and aluminum electrodes） was studied. Compared with aluminum electrodes, mild steel electrodes were more effective for the removal of sulfide, with a removal efficiency of over 90%. But during the treatment process, black color precipitate typical to iron（Ⅱ） sulfides was produced. While aluminum electrodes were effective to eliminate the colority of the effluent, the removal efficiency of sulfide was lower than 12%. The mechanisms of the removal of chemical oxygen demand, ammonia, total organic carbon, sulfide and colority with the two soluble electrodes （mild steel and aluminum electrodes） were discussed in detail. In order to exert the predominance of diffenent types of electrodes, the tannery wastewater was treated using mild steel electrodes first followed by the filter and finally by the aluminum electrodes, the elimination rates of chemical oxygen demand, ammonia, total organic carbon, sulfide and colority were 68.0%, 43.1%, 55.1%, 96.7% and 84.3%, respectively, with the initial concentrations 2413.1 mg/L, 223.4 mg/L, 1000.4 mg/L, 112.3 mg/L and 256 dilution times, respectively. The absorbance spectra and energy consumption during electrocoagulation process were also discussed.

Chronic kidney disease(CKD) is a widespread renal disease throughout the world. Once it develops to the advanced stage, serious complications and high risk of death will follow. Hence, early screening is crucial for the treatment of CKD. Since ultrasonography has no side effects and enables radiologists to dynamically observe the morphology and pathological features of the kidney, it is commonly used for kidney examination. In this study,we propose a novel convolutional neural network(CNN) framework named the texture branch network to screen CKD based on ultrasound images. This introduces a texture branch into a typical CNN to extract and optimize texture features. The model can automatically generate texture features and deep features from input images, and use the fused information as the basis of classification. Furthermore, we train the base part of the network by means of transfer learning, and conduct experiments on a dataset with 226 ultrasound images. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach, achieving an accuracy of 96.01% and a sensitivity of 99.44%.

The Author Reply: We thank Pitcairn et al. [1] for their discussion of our study recently published in Hepatobiliary & Pancreatic Diseases International [2]. They highlighted the added value that contrast-enhanced ultrasonography(CEUS) can present in low-resource settings, where other diagnostic modalities may be neither cost-effective nor readily available. We agree with their point. In addition, we also would like to highlight that CEUS is safer for human body than computed tomography(CT) and magnetic resonance imaging(MRI).

Herein, we report the first visible-light photoredox-catalyzed carboxylation of aryl epoxides with CO_(2)to synthesize hydroxy acid derivatives. A variety of valuable β-, γ-, δ-, ε–hydroxy acid derivatives are obtained in moderate to high yields under mild conditions. This protocol shows noteworthy functionalgroup compatibility, high chemo-and regioselectivities under transition-metal-free conditions with an inexpensive organo-dye as photosensitizer. Mechanistic studies indicate that the benzylic carbanion is generated as an intermediate via the sequential single electron transfer(SSET) process.

Fluorescence Anisotropy(FA)is an effective biochemical detection method based on molecular *** oxide(GO)has been extensively used as an FA ***,the enhancement of FA by GO alone is limited and the strong scattering of GO will easily make the measurement of FA *** order to address these problems,an octopus-like DNA nanostructure(ODN)was designed and coupled with GO to enhance the FA together in this *** mimicking the multi-clawed structure of the octopus,the ODN can be adsorbed on GO tightly,which not only could improve the sensitivity because of the double FA enhancement abilities of GO and ODN,but also could improve the specificity due to the decrease of the nonspecific interaction in complex ***,ODN could maintain a certain distance between the fluorophore and GO to reduce the fluorescence quenching efficiency of GO,which could improve the *** method has been applied for the detection of hepatitis B virus DNA(HBV-DNA)in a range of 1-50 nmol/L and the limit of detection(LOD)was 330 pmol/*** addition,the proposed method has been successfully utilized to detect HBV-DNA in human serum,indicating that this method has a great practical application prospect.

Pacific oyster(Crassostrea gigas)is one of the most important mollusks cultured all around the *** breeding programs of Pacific oysters in China is initiated since 2006 and developed the genetically improved strain with fast-growing ***,little is known about the metabolic signatures of the fast-growing *** the present study,the non-targeted metabolomics was performed to analyze the metabolic signatures of adductor muscle tissue in one-year old Pacific oysters from fast-growing strain and the wild population.A total of 7767 and 10174 valid peaks were extracted and quantified in ESI^(+)and ESI^(−)modes,resulting in 399 and 381 annotated metabolites,*** and OPLS-DA revealed that considerable separation among samples from fastgrowing strain and wild population,suggesting the differences in metabolic ***,81 significantly different metabolites(SDMs)were identified in the comparisons between fast-growing strain and wild population,based on the strict *** was found that there were highly correlation and conserved coordination among these *** enrichment analysis indicated that the SDMs were tightly related to pantothenate and CoA biosynthesis,steroid hormone biosynthesis,riboflavin metabolism,and arginine and proline *** them,the CoA biosynthesis and metabolism,affected by pantetheine and pantothenic acid,might be important for the growth of Pacific oysters under artificial selective *** study provides the comprehensive views of metabolic signatures in response to artificially selective breeding,and is helpful to better understand the molecular mechanism of fastgrowing traits in Pacific oysters.

The nature of solid-liquid interfaces is of great significance in *** advances have been made in lubrication based on hydration ***,a detailed molecular-level understanding is still ***,we investigated water molecule behaviors at the TiO2-aqueous interfaces by the sum-frequency generation vibrational spectroscopy(SFG-VS)and atomic force microscope(AFM)to elucidate the fundamental role of solid-liquid interfaces in *** contributions of water structures and hydration effects were revealed,where water structures played the dominant role in lubrication for TiO2 surfaces of varying hydrophilicity,while hydration effects dominated with the increasing of ion *** lubrication is observed on the initial TiO2 surfaces with strongly H-bonded water molecules compared to the hydrophilic TiO2 surfaces with more disordered *** stable ordered water arrangement with strong hydrogen bonds and the shear plane occurring between the ordered water layer and subsequent water layer may play a significant role in achieving lower *** adsorbed hydrated molecules with the increasing ionic concentration perturb ordered water but lead to the enhancement of hydration effects,which is the main reason for the improved lubrication for both *** work provides more insights into the detailed molecular-level understanding of the mechanism of hydration lubrication.
