Influence of Coriolis Parameter Variation on Langmuir Turbulence in the Ocean Upper Mixed Layer with Large Eddy Simulation

Langmuir turbulence is a complex turbulent process in the ocean upper mixed layer.The Coriolis parameter has an important effect on Langmuir turbulence through the Coriolis-Stokes force and Ekman effect,however,this effect on Langmuir turbulence has not been systematically investigated.Here,the impact of the Coriolis parameter on Langmuir turbulence with a change of latitude(LAT)from 20°N to 80°N is studied using a non-hydrostatic large eddy simulation model under an ideal condition.The results show that the ratio of the upper mixed layer depth to Ekman depth scale(RME)RME=0.266(LAT=50°N)is a key value(latitude)for the modulation effect of the Coriolis parameter on the mean and turbulent statistics of Langmuir turbulence.It is found that the rate of change of the sea surface temperature,upper mixed layer depth,entrainment flux,crosswind velocity,downwind vertical momentum flux,and turbulent kinetic energy budget terms associated with Langmuir turbulence are more evident at RME≤0.266(LAT≤50°N)than at RME≥0.266(LAT≥50°N).However,the rate of change of the depth-averaged crosswind vertical momentum flux does not have a clear variation between RME≤0.266 and RME≥0.266.The complex changes of both Langmuir turbulence characteristics and influence of Langmuir turbulence on the upper mixed layer with latitude presented here may provide more information for further improving Langmuir turbulence parameterization.

An impulsive integrated pest management system with diffusion is investigated within this paper.The conditions for pest eradication of the impulsive system without natural enemies are established based on the Krein-Rutman theorem and the comparison principle for parabolic equations.Integrated pest management can be achieved at an exponential rate,when the principal eigenvalues of the auxiliary system is large enough.Numerical simulations are presented to demonstrate the theoretical results.A discussion is given at the end.

BACKGROUND Speech disorders have a substantial impact on communication abilities and quality of life.Traditional treatments such as speech and psychological therapies frequently demonstrate limited effectiveness and patient compliance.Transcranial electrical stimulation(TES)has emerged as a promising non-invasive treatment to improve neurological functions.However,its effectiveness in enhancing language functions and serum neurofactor levels in individuals with speech disorders requires further investigation.AIM To investigate the impact of TES in conjunction with standard therapies on serum neurotrophic factor levels and language function in patients with speech disorders.METHODS In a controlled study spanning from March 2019 to November 2021,81 patients with speech disorders were divided into a control group(n=40)receiving standard speech stimulation and psychological intervention,and an observation group(n=41)receiving additional TES.The study assessed serum levels of ciliary neurotrophic factor(CNTF),glial cell-derived neurotrophic factor(GDNF),brainderived neurotrophic factor(BDNF),and nerve growth factor(NGF),as well as evaluations of motor function,language function,and development quotient scores.RESULTS After 3 wk of intervention,the observation group exhibited significantly higher serum levels of CNTF,GDNF,BDNF,and NGF compared to the control group.Moreover,improvements were noted in motor function,cognitive function,language skills,physical abilities,and overall development quotient scores.It is worth mentioning that the observation group also displayed superior perfor CONCLUSION This retrospective study concluded that TES combined with traditional speech and psychotherapy can effectively increase the levels of neurokines in the blood and enhance language function in patients with speech disorders.These results provide a promising avenue for integrating TES into standard treatment methods for speech disorders.

As a foundation of life-science research and advancement,biobanking has played a critical role and made tremendous contributions to healthcare,biotechnology,disease control and prevention,as well as bio-conservation for the benefit of all humankind.This paper starts with a brief introduction of basic concepts,history,classification,and significance of biobanking,followed by a discussion on cryobiology fundamentals and key challenges faced by cryopreservation in biobanking.A special case discussion on the cryopreservation and biobanking of pathogenic microorganisms to meet both the unmet needs for biomedical research and the urgent demand for developing countermeasures against the ongoing coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19)pandemic is highlighted with insightful recommendations for future studies.

Planning and Decision-making for Connected Autonomous Vehicles at Road Intersections:A Review

Planning and decision-making technology at intersections is a comprehensive research problem in intelligent transportation systems due to the uncertainties caused by a variety of traffic participants.As wireless communication advances,vehicle infrastructure integrated algorithms designed for intersection planning and decision-making have received increasing attention.In this paper,the recent studies on the planning and decision-making technologies at intersections are primarily overviewed.The general planning and decision-making approaches are presented,which include graph-based approach,prediction base approach,optimization-based approach and machine learning based approach.Since connected autonomous vehicles(CAVs)is the future direction for the automated driving area,we summarized the evolving planning and decision-making methods based on vehicle infrastructure cooperative technologies.Both four-way signalized and unsignalized intersection(s)are investigated under purely automated driving traffic and mixed traffic.The study benefit from current strategies,protocols,and simulation tools to help researchers identify the presented approaches’challenges and determine the research gaps,and several remaining possible research problems that need to be solved in the future.

Cloud computing provides elastic data storage and processing services. Although existing research has proposed preferred search on the plaintext files and encrypted search, no method has been proposed that integrates the two techniques to efficiently conduct preferred and privacypreserving search over large datasets in the cloud. In this paper, we propose a scheme for preferred search over encrypted data （PSED） that can take users＇ search preferences into the search over encrypted data. In the search process, we ensure the confidentiality of not only keywords but also quantified preferences associated with them. PSED constructs its encrypted search index using Lagrange coefficients and employs secure inner-product calculation for both search and relevance measurement. The dynamic and scalable property of cloud computing is also considered in PSED. A series of experiments have been conducted to demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed scheme when deploying it in realworld scenarios.

The tapered asymmetric directional coupler has the potential to realize high fabrication tolerance and high transmission efficiency on-chip mode multiplexer. However, the geometry parameter selection of tapered structure remains empirical. In this paper, we propose a design method for the tapered structure based on genetic algorithm. Combined with the adjusted coupling equations and interpolation method, lowtime-cost optimization can be realized. Three mode multiplexers(TE0&TE1, TE0&TE2 and TE0&TE5)are designed by our method. According to simulation results, the insertion loss of the designed devices is lower than 1.8 dB and the crosstalk is lower than-15 dB when the fabrication error is within required range(±10 nm for TE0&TE2 and TE0&TE5, and ±20 nm for TE0&TE1) in the bandwidth of 1.5–1.6 μm. In addition, the entire optimization process takes only 2 h for each device, which is around the time cost of a single 3 D simulation.

The impact of assimilating radiance data from the advanced satellite sensor GMI(GPM microwave imager)for typhoon analyses and forecasts was investigated using both a three-dimensional variational(3DVAR)and a hybrid ensemble-3DVAR method.The interface of assimilating the radiance for the sensor GMI was established in the Weather Research and Forecasting(WRF)model.The GMI radiance data are assimilated for Typhoon Matmo(2014),Typhoon Chan-hom(2015),Typhoon Meranti(2016),and Typhoon Mangkhut(2018)in the Pacific before their landing.The results show that after assimilating the GMI radiance data under clear sky condition with the 3DVAR method,the wind,temperature,and humidity fields are effectively adjusted,leading to improved forecast skills of the typhoon track with GMI radiance assimilation.The hybrid DA method is able to further adjust the location of the typhoon systematically.The improvement of the track forecast is even more obvious for later forecast periods.In addition,water vapor and hydrometeors are enhanced to some extent,especially with the hybrid method.

Lizhong Decoction Ameliorates Ulcerative Colitis in Mice via Regulation of Plasma and Urine Metabolic Profiling

Objective:To elucidate the mechanism of Lizhong Decoction(LZD)in treating dextran sodium sulfate(DSS)-induced colitis in mice based on metabonomics.Methods:Thirty-six mice were randomly divided into 6 groups,including normal,model,low-(1.365 g/kg),medium-(4.095 g/kg)and high dose(12.285 g/kg)LZD and salazosulfadimidine(SASP)groups,6 mice in each group.Colitis model mice were induced by DSS admistration for 7 days,and treated with low,medium and high dose LZD extract and positive drug SASP.Metabolic comparison of DSS-induced colitis and normal mice was investigated by using ultra-performance liquid chromatography coupled to quadrupole time-of-flight mass(UPLC-Q-TOF/MS)combined with Metabolynxsoftware.Results:The metabolic profiles of plasma and urine in colitis mice were distinctly ameliorated after LZD treatment(P<0.05).Potential biomarkers(9 in serum and 4 in urine)were screened and tentatively identified.The endogenous metabolites were mainly involved in primary bile acid,sphingolipid,linoleic acid,arachidonic acid,amino acids(alanine,aspartate,and glutamate),butanoate and glycerophospholipid metabolism in plasma,and terpenoid backbone biosynthesis,glycerophospholipid and tryptophan metabolism in urine.After LZD treatment,these markers notably restored to normal levels.Conclusions:The study revealed the underlying mechanism of LZD on amelioration of ulcerative colitis based on metabonomics,which laid a foundation for further exploring the pathological and physiological mechanism,early diagnosis,and corresponding drug development of colitis.
