Loh-Seng Tsai(蔡乐生,1901–1992)(Fig.1),the worldrenowned Chinese animal psychologist and psychopharmacologist,was born to a merchant family in Chaoan County,Guangdong Province on February 6th,1901.He was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize in 1951 and U.S.President Nixon praised his“exemplary academic achievements”in 1973.Tsai’s research in experimental psychology can be divided into two stages.During the first stage(1919–1949),Tsai embarked on the path of psychology as a student under the guidance of Clarence Herbert Hamilton.Subsequently,Tsai expanded and popularized the experimental research conducted by comparative psychologist Zing-Yang Kuo(郭任远,1898–1970)and Harvey Carr,both of whom were Tsai’s supervisors at different times.

Yu-Chuan Tsang(臧玉洤,1901-1964),styled Botan(伯潭),was an outstanding Chinese physiological psychologist,a comparative neuroscientist,and a neuroanatomist(Fig.1).He was a member of the First Council of the Chinese Society for Anatomical Sciences,an executive member of the sec-ond,third,fourth and fifth councils,and the Chairman of the Third Council.He was one of the founders of neuroanatomy in modem China and the Beijing Medical College(now the Department of Medicine at Peking University).Neu-roanatomy is a discipline that consists of making observa-tions and making recordings.Moreover,there are different interdisciplinary subjects based on neuroscience,including cognitive science,neurobehavioral science,neuroengineer-ing,and psychology.Tsang's academic career followed an opposite direction,starting from psychology and turning to neuroanatomy,where he made remarkable achievements.

U-Pb zircon geochronology of basaltic pyroclastic rocks from the basement beneath the Xisha Islands in the northwestern South China Sea and its geological significance

As one of the micro-blocks dispersed in the South China Sea(SCS), the basement of the Xisha Islands has rarely been drilled because of the thick overlying Cenozoic sediments, which has led to a confused understanding of the pre-Cenozoic basement of the Xisha Islands. Well CK-1, a kilometer-scale major scientific drill in the Xisha Islands in the northwestern SCS, penetrated thick reefal limestone(0–888.4 m) and the underlying basement rocks(888.4–901.4 m). In this study, we present the zircon U-Pb ages of basement basaltic pyroclastic rocks from Well CK-1 in the Xisha Islands of the northwestern SCS to investigate the basement nature of the Xisha microblock. The basement of Well CK-1 consists of basaltic pyroclastic rocks on the seamount. The zircon grains yielded apparent ages ranging from ca. 2 138.9 Ma to ca. 36 Ma. The old group of zircon grains from Well CK-1 was considered to be inherited zircons. Two Cenozoic zircons gave a weighted mean 206Pb/238U age of(36.3 ± 1.1) Ma,Mean Squared Weighted Deviations(MSWD) = 1.2, which may represent the maximum age of the volcano eruption. The Yanshanian inherited zircons(116.9–105.7 Ma and 146.1–130.2 Ma) from Well CK-1 are consistent with the zircons from Well XK-1, indicating that the basement of Chenhang Island may be similar to that of Well XK-1. We propose that the Xisha micro-block may have developed on a uniform Late Jurassic metamorphic crystalline basement, intruded by Cretaceous granitic magma.

Volatile organic compounds(VOCs)are a crucial kind of pollutants in the environment due to their obvious features of severe toxicity,high volatility,and poor degradability.It is particularly urgent to control the emission of VOCs due to the persistent increase of concentration and the stringent regulations.In China,clear directions and requirements for reduction of VOCs have been given in the“national plan on environmental improvement for the 13th Five-Year Plan period”.Therefore,the development of efficient technologies for removal and recovery of VOCs is of great significance.Recovery technologies are favored by researchers due to their advantages in both recycling VOCs and reducing carbon emissions.Among them,adsorption and membrane separation processes have been extensively studied due to their remarkable industrial prospects.This overview was to provide an up-to-date progress of adsorption and membrane separation for removal and recovery of VOCs.Firstly,adsorption and membrane separation were found to be the research hotspots through bibliometric analysis.Then,a comprehensive understanding of their mechanisms,factors,and current application statuses was discussed.Finally,the challenges and perspectives in this emerging field were briefly highlighted.

In our retrospective cohort study,we aim to explore whether Azvudine modifies the risk of death in COVID-19 patients.It was conducted on the medical records of patients,consecutively admitted for COVID-19 pneumonia to two hospitals in Chongqing,China.Based on Azvudine treatment exposure,the patients were divided into Azvudine group and non-Azvudine group.We used 1:2 ratio propensity score matching(PSM)in our study to adjust for confounding factors and differences between Azvudine and non-Azvudine groups.There were 1072 patients included in our original cohort.With 1:2 ratio PSM,the Azvudine group included 195 patients and non-Azvudine group included 390 patients.The results showed that Azvudine treatment was associated with improved in-hospital mortality in overall population(OR 0.375,95%CI 0.225-0.623,Plity in overall population(11%vs.24%,Plity in overall COVID-19 patients,severe,and critical subgroup population.

Tissue engineering is a relatively new but rapidly developing field in the medical sciences. Noncoding RNAs(ncRNAs) are functional RNA molecules without a protein-coding function; they can regulate cellular behavior and change the biological milieu of the tissue. The application of ncRNAs in tissue engineering is starting to attract increasing attention as a means of resolving a large number of unmet healthcare needs, although ncRNA-based approaches have not yet entered clinical practice. In-depth research on the regulation and delivery of ncRNAs may improve their application in tissue engineering.The aim of this review is: to outline essential ncRNAs that are related to tissue engineering for the repair and regeneration of nerve, skin, liver, vascular system, and muscle tissue; to discuss their regulation and delivery; and to anticipate their potential therapeutic applications.

Regulating the crystal phase of bismuth-based semiconductors for promoted photocatalytic performance

Numerous bismuth-based semiconductors(BBSs)with sophisticated and desirable structures used as photocatalysts for efficient photocatalytic degradation of water organic contaminants have attracted considerable attention.However,regulating the crystal phases and phase transition of BBSs for promoted photocatalytic performance is ignored.Herein,the unique crystal structure and band structure features of each typical BBSs,and the vital roles on phase controlling of each phase were systematically presented based on the classification of BBSs.Notably,the critical factors for the phase transition of BBSs and intrinsic driving forces endowed by phases of BBSs for enhanced photocatalytic performance of organic contaminants removal were also elucidated.This review will provide systematical guidelines and horizons for regulating the crystal phase and phase transition of BBSs,promoting photocatalytic degradation and mineralization of organic contaminants.

In recent years,immune checkpoint inhibitors(ICIs)have become an important treatment strategy for advanced gastric cancer.Immunotherapy has gradually transitioned from a later-line to a first-line treatment for advanced gastric cancer.Simultaneously,more and more researchers have begun to pay attention to whether immunotherapy can be used for resectable gastric cancer.The current use of ICIs in the neoadjuvant treatment of gastric cancer is still in its exploratory stage,with a number of clinical trials currently underway.However,the available data show good application prospects.This article reviews the research progress on ICIs in the neoadjuvant therapy for gastric cancer and evokes some unresolved problems.

We investigated the role of the Wnt signaling pathway in cerebral ischemia/reperfusion injury by examining β-catenin and glycogen synthase kinase-3β protein expression in the rat hippocampal CA1 region following acute cerebral ischemia/reperfusion. Our results demonstrate that cell apoptosis increases in the CA1 region following ischemia/reperfusion. In addition, β-catenin and glycogen synthase kinase-3β protein expression gradually increases, peaking at 48 hours following reperfusion. Dickkopf-1 administration, after cerebral ischemia/reperfusion injury, results in decreased cell apoptosis, and β-catenin and glycogen synthase kinase-3β expression, in the CA1 region. This suggests that β-catenin and glycogen synthase kinase-3β, both components of the Wnt signaling pathway, participate in cell apoptosis following cerebral ischemia/reperfusion injury.
