Investigation of transient and heterogeneous micro-climate around a human body in an enclosed personalized work environment

Heterogeneous distribution of indoor environmental quality is known to have a great impact on human health,comfort,and productivity.A personalized work environment,that creates a localized and independent environ-ment with capsules or partitions,is being developed worldwide to provide workers with a space that enables undisturbed concentration on studying and ***,the minimized interior space of a personalized work environment can immediately cause adverse health impacts for occupant if the air quality and thermal en-vironment in the personalized work environment is not controlled ***,constant breathing can sharply increase the CO 2 concentrations in an interior space with an insufficient ventilation *** order to design a healthy and comfortable indoor environment,especially in a personalized work environment,it is important to predict precisely and comprehensively the transient and heterogeneous structure of the indoor envi-ronment formed around a human *** this background,we have developed an in silico human model that integrates a computational human model(virtual manikin combined with thermoregulation models)and respi-ratory model(virtual airway)for estimating indoor environmental quality,targeting the microclimate around a human body and breathing zone with high *** this study,we report the applicability of a comprehensive in silico human model to estimate the environ-mental quality in a personalized work environment.A coupled analysis of heat and contaminant transfer with computational fluid dynamics was conducted targeting the space around the in silico human model installed in a virtual personalized work *** informative data including human thermal comfort and breathing air quality were obtained,potentially forming the basis for the development of a digital twin of the personalized work environment and contributing to the design of a healthy,comfortable,and productive personalized work environme

Frequency Stabilized GaP Continuous-Wave Terahertz Signal Generator for High-Resolution Spectroscopy

We constructed a GaP continuous-wave terahertz (CW-THz) signal generator based on different frequency generation that can tune automatically from 0.15 to 6.2 THz without mode-hopping. Independent frequency feedback control for the seed laser and power feedback control for the optical power amplifier realized higher accuracy and stability of the output THz-wave at the same time. After constructing THz spectrometer with the GaP CW-THz signal generator as a light source, we have confirmed frequency resolution to be 15 MHz by the measurement of the Doppler width of water vapor absorptions in vacuumed chamber, and frequency reproducibility to be within 5 MHz by comparing with absorption frequency data.

Origin of cells and network information

All cells are derived from one cell, and the origin of different cell types is a subject of curiosity. Cells construct life through appropriately timed networks at each stage of development. Communication among cells and intracellular signaling are essential for cell differentiation and for life processes. Cellular molecular networks establish cell diversity and life. The investigation of the regulation of each gene in the genome within the cellular network is therefore of interest. Stem cells produce various cells that are suitable for specific purposes. The dynamics of the information in the cellular network changes as the status of cells is altered. The components of each cell are subject to investigation.

Signaling involved in stem cell reprogramming and differentiation

Stem cell differentiation is regulated by multiple signaling events. Recent technical advances have reve-aled that differentiated cells can be reprogrammed into stem cells. The signals involved in stem cell pro-gramming are of major interest in stem cell research. The signaling mechanisms involved in regulating stem cell reprogramming and differentiation are the subject of intense study in the field of life sciences. In this review,the molecular interactions and signaling pathways related to stem cell differentiation are discussed.

Matrine promotes neural circuit remodeling to regulate motor function in a mouse model of chronic spinal cord injury

In chronic phase of spinal cord injury, functional recovery is more untreatable compared with early intervention in acute phase of spinal cord injury. In the last decade, several combination therapies successfully improved motor dysfunction in chronic spinal cord injury. However, their effectiveness is not sufficient. We previously found a new effective compound for spinal cord injury, matrine, which induced axonal growth and functional recovery in acute spinal cord injury mice via direct activation of extracellular heat shock protein 90. Although our previous study clarified that matrine was an activator of extracellular heat shock protein 90, the potential of matrine for spinal cord injury in chronic phase has not been sufficiently evaluated. Thus, this study aimed to investigate whether matrine ameliorates chronic spinal cord injury in mice. Once daily intragastric administration of matrine(100 μmol/kg per day) to spinal cord injury mice were starte at 28 days after injury, and continued for 154 days. Continuous mat rine treatment improved hindlimb motor function in chronic spinal cord injury mice. In injured spinal cords of the matrine-treated mice, the density of neurofilament-H-positive axons was increased. Moreover, matrine treatment increased the density of bassoon-positive presynapses in contact with choline acetyltransferase-positive motor neurons in the lumbar spinal cord. These findings suggest that matrine promotes remodeling and reconnection of neural circuits to regulate hindlimb movement. All protocols were approved by the Committee for Animal Care and Use of the Sugitani Campus of the University of Toyama(approval No. A2013 INM-1 and A2016 INM-3) on May 7, 2013 and May 17, 2016, respectively.

Development of a nanostructured filter for pyrolysis wax purification:Effects of particulate filter aids

Wax obtained from the pyrolysis of polyethylene waste can contain inorganic contaminants and must be purified before *** evaluated different filter aids(perlite,sand,and rice husk ash)for the filtration of a crude wax and a pyrolysis wax through a filter medium that was coated with nylon 6 nanofibers to improve filtration *** first examined the performance of the filter aids in improving crude wax filtration,with the filtration time,temperature,and pressure held constant at 1 h,170℃,and 2.5 bar,*** wax was then produced by pyrolysis of high-density polyethylene(HDPE)waste in the temperature range 425-475℃.The best filter aid was perlite,which had a filtrate production rate of 5.47×10^(-5)m^(3)/*** highest oily wax yield(87.8%)was achieved at a pyrolysis temperature of 425℃.The assembly comprising the filter medium coated with nylon 6 nanofibers plus perlite as a filter aid was most suitable for removing impurities from the oily wax generated by the HDPE pyrolysis as it achieved a purification efficiency of 99.9%.

Non-Contact Measurements of Water Jet Spreading Width with a Laser Instrument

Jet spreading width is one of the important characteristics of water jets discharging into the *** researchers have dealt with measuring this width,and contact measuring methods on the water jet surface were employed in a lot of the *** order to avoid undesirable effects caused by the contact on the jet surface,we introduce non-contact measuring methods with a laser instrument to the measurements of jet spreading *** measurements,a transmitter emits sheet-like laser beam to a *** water jet between the transmitter and the receiver interrupts the laser beam and makes a *** minimum and maximum values of the shadow width are *** addition,pictures of the water jet are taken with a scale,and the shadow width is measured from the *** experiments on various needle strokes were *** kinds of width consistent with the jet structure were *** the results,it can be concluded that our non-contact measuring methods are *** data of jet spreading widths and jet taper were obtained and are useful for future applications.

Haptic interface using tendon electrical stimulation with consideration of multimodal presentation

Background Our previous studies have shown that electrical stimulation from the skin surface to the tendon region(Tendon Electrical Stimulation:TES)can elicit a force sensation,and adjusting the current parameters can control the amount of the *** is thought to present a proprioceptive force sensation by stimulating receptors or sensory nerves responsible for recognizing the magnitude of the muscle contraction existing inside the tendon,so it can be a proprioceptive module of a small-size,low-cost force feedback *** there is also suspect that TES presents only strong,noisy skin *** previous study,it was found that TES has some limitation on varying *** In this study,in addition to characterizing the proprioceptive sensation induced by TES,we constructed a multimodal presentation system reproducing a situation in which force is applied to the hand was offered,so as to investigate whether TES contributed to the reproduction of haptics cooperating with other modalities,rather than disturbing ***,we used vibration to present a cutaneous sensation and a visual head mounted display(HMD)system to present simultaneous *** this system,we also evaluated the efficacy of TES itself and that of the multimodal system involving *** We found that TES,along with visual and vibration stimulation,contributed to the perception of a certain *** Thus,TES appears to be an effective component of multimodal force sense presentation systems.

Molecular evidence for biochemical diversification of phenolamide biosynthesis in rice plants

Two phenolamides （PAs）, p-coumaroylputrescine and feruloylputrescine strongly accumulate in rice （Oryza sativa cv. Nipponbare） leaves subjected to attack of chewing and sucking herbivores. Here we identified and characterized in vitro three novel rice genes that mediated coumaroyI-CoA/ feruloyI-CoA conjugation to polyamines, putrescine and agmatine. Interestingly, two genes were highly specific for their polyamine substrates, encoding putresdne N-hydrox- ycinnamoyltransferase and agmatine N-hydroxycinnamoyl- transferase, while the third enzyme could use both polyamines and it was therefore annotated as putrescine/ agmatine N-hydroxycinnamoyltransferase. All genes were preferentially expressed in rice roots and developing flowers, and in addition, the putrescine/agmatine N-hydroxycinnamoyl- transferase transcripts were strongly induced by wounding in the young rice leaves. Because the wound response of this gene was only partially suppressed in the jasmonoyI-L-isoleucine deficient plants （Osjarl）, it suggests that its upregulation （as well as inducible PAs in rice） may be largely independent of jasmonoyI-L-isoleucine signaling pathway. The finding of three closely related genes with a similar and/or overlapping activity in PA biosynthesis provides another striking example of rapid diversification of plant metabolism in response to environmental stresses in nature.
