Early life history traits of chub mackerel Scomber japonicus in the Oyashio water revealed by otolith microstructure

Information on survival and growth during the early life stage is essential to understand the mechanism of interannual variations in fish recruitment.Chub mackerel Scomber japonicus is a commercially important pelagic fish widely distributed in the northwestern Pacific.Its catch showed large fluctuations with changes in distribution and migration under climate change and strong fishing.We determined the hatch dates and growth rates of young-of-the-year of chub mackerel through otolith microstructure using samples collected in the Oyashio water in autumn 2018.Results show that the ages of young chub mackerel ranged between 120 and 180 d,and the estimated hatch date lasted from midJanuary to late May with a peak from mid-March to mid-April.Average otolith daily increment width during the early life stages(from hatching to 25 d)showed an increasing trend.Chub mackerel grows slowly in the first 10 d,and then grows faster during the 10thto 25thd.Three groups with dissimilar growth histories and migration routes were identified using unsupervised random forest clustering analysis,but all eventually converge on the same nursery ground.The faster growth of young-of-the-year chub mackerel leads to better recruitment due to the hypothesis of growth-dependent mortality.Most chub mackerels hatched in March and April,the spawning period is longer and earlier,which could lead to strong year classes.These findings on population composition and life history traits of young-of-the-year of chub mackerel provide valuable information on its recruitment processes during the period of stock recovery.

Efficiently and thoroughly degrading organic dyes in wastewater is of great importance and challenge.Herein,vertically oriented mesoporous a-Fe_(2)O_(3)nanorods array(a-Fe_(2)O_(3)-NA)is directly grown on fluorine-doped tin oxide(FTO)glass and employed as the photoanode for photoelectrocatalytic degradation of methylene blue simulated dye wastewater.The Ovsites on the a-Fe_(2)O_(3)-NA surface are the active sites for methylene blue(MB)adsorption.Electrons transfer from the adsorbed MB to Fe-O is detected.Compared with electrocatalytic and photocatalytic degradation processes,the photoelectrocatalytic(PEC)process exhibited the best degrading performance and the largest kinetic constant.Hydroxyl,superoxide free radicals,and photo-generated holes play a jointly leading role in the PEC degradation.A possible degrading pathway is suggested by liquid chromatography-mass spectroscopy analysis.This work demonstrates that photoelectrocatalysis by a-Fe_(2)O_(3)-NA has a remarkable superiority over photocatalysis and electrocatalysis in MB degradation.The in-depth investigation of photoelectrocatalytic degradation mechanism in this study is meaningful for organic wastewater treatment.

Modeling and RTM for arbitrary-order pure acoustic wave equation in VTI media using normalized pseudo-analytical method

The conventional pseudo-acoustic wave equations（PWEs） in vertical transversely isotropic（VTI）media may generate SV-wave artifacts and propagation instabilities when anisotropy parameters cannot satisfy the pseudo-acoustic assumption. One solution to these issues is to use pure acoustic anisotropic wave equations, which can produce stable and pure P-wave responses without any SVwave pollutions. The commonly used pure acoustic wave equations（PAWEs） in VTI media are mainly derived from the decoupled P-SV dispersion relation based on first-order Taylor-series expansion（TE）, thus they will suffer from accuracy loss in strongly anisotropic media. In this paper, we adopt arbitrary-order TE to expand the square root term in Alkhalifah＇s accurate acoustic VTI dispersion relation and solve the corresponding PAWE using the normalized pseudoanalytical method（NPAM） based on optimized pseudodifferential operator. Our analysis of phase velocity errors indicates that the accuracy of our new expression is perfectly acceptable for majority anisotropy parameters. The effectiveness of our proposed scheme also can be demonstrated by several numerical examples and reverse-time migration（RTM） result.

A new sensitivity model with blank space for layout optimization

As the technology scales advancing into the nanometer region,the concept of yield has become an increasingly important design metric.To reduce the yield loss caused by local defects,layout optimization can play a critical role.In this paper,we propose a new open sensitivity-based model with consideration of the blank space around the net,and study the corresponding net optimization.The proposed new model not only has a high practicability in the selection of nets to be optimized but also solves the issue of the increase in short critical area brought during the open optimization,which means to reduce the open critical area with no new short critical area produced,and thereby this model can ensure the decrease of total critical area and finally achieves an integrative optimization.Compared with the models available,the experimental results show that our sensitivity model not only consumes less time with concise algorithm but also can deal with irregular layout,which is out of the scope of other models.At the end of this paper,the effectiveness of the new model is verified by the experiment on the randomly selected five metal layers from the synthesized OpenSparc circuit layout.

Intelligent vehicles are advancing at a fast speed with the improvement of automation and connectivity,which opens up new possibilities for different cyber-attacks,including in-vehicle attacks(e.g.,hijacking attacks)and vehicle-to-everything communicationattacks(e.g.,data theft).These problems are becoming increasingly serious with the development of 4G LTE and 5G communication technologies.Although many efforts are made to improve the resilience to cyber attacks,there are still many unsolved challenges.This paper first identifies some major security attacks on intelligent connected vehicles.Then,we investigate and summarize the available defences against these attacks and classify them into four categories:cryptography,network security,software vulnerability detection,and malware detection.Remaining challenges and future directions for preventing attacks on intelligent vehicle systems have been discussed as well.

Otolith Shape Analysis as a Tool to Identify Two Pacific Saury(Cololabis saira) Groups from a Mixed Stock in the High-Seas Fishing Ground

The Pacific saury Cololabis saira is a commercially important pelagic species with wide distribution in the North Pacific Ocean. Previous studies identified two geographical groups by comparing the radius of otolith annual rings(ROA) of the fish collected during the pre-fishing season. Moreover, understanding the group composition in the mixed catch from the fishing ground is essential for sustainable exploitation of this species. Using samples collected during the fishing season(July–November) from 2016 to 2018, the potential of applying otolith shape analysis as a tool to identify these two mixed groups was tested in this research. Two otolith morphotypes that belong to the eastern group and western group were identified by K-means cluster analysis using Fourier coefficients and ROA. The high classification success of random forest further confirmed the effectiveness of otolith shape analysis. The western group accounted for the majority of catch in July and August at 160?E. With the passing of sampling time and fishing fleets moving westward, the proportion of eastern group gradually increased and finally reached more than 60% of the whole catch in November at 150°E. This result suggests that the eastern and western groups are well mixed during spawning migration. In addition, the temporal and spatial dynamics of their catch composition provide information for their migration route. This study is helpful for improving fisheries management and understanding the short-term stock fluctuation of Pacific saury.

Polygenic risk score for prediction of radiotherapy efficacy and radiosensitivity in patients with non-metastatic breast cancer

Objective:To construct a novel polygenic risk scoring model,in order to predict the benefits of radiosensitivity in patients with non-metastatic breast cancer(NMBC).Methods:A total of 450 NMBC patients from The Cancer Genome Atlas(TCGA)were enrolled and randomly assigned 6:4(training vs.validation).The empirical Bayes differential analysis was used to perform differential expression analysis,univariate Cox regression and Kaplan-Meier analysis were used to screen for prognosisrelated genes.Finally,LASSO regression and stepwise regression were used to select key prognostic-related genes.We constructed a multivariate Cox proportional risk regression model using key genes.The pRRophetic function was used to predict drug sensitivity of radiosensitivity(RS)and radioresistance(RR)groups for adjuvant therapy.Results:Eight genes(AMH,H2BU1,HOXB13,TMEM132A,TMEM270,ODF3L1,RIIAD1 and RIMBP2)were screened to build a polygenic risk scoring model.The region of characteristic(ROC)curves were drawn based on the 3-,5-and 10-year overall survival(OS),with area under curves(AUCs)of 0.816,0.822 and 0.806,respectively.RS and RR can be effectively distinguished according to the risk score of 2.004.Gene set enrichment analysis(GSEA)showed that necroptosis was significantly enriched in RS,while complement and coagulation cascade,JAK-STAT and PPAR signaling pathways were significantly enriched in RR.Alternatively,for those radioresistant patients,the chemotherapy drugs that might be more helpful are Cisplatin,Docetaxel,Methotrexate and Vinblastine with higher drug sensitivity.Conclusion:The polygenic risk scoring model showed prediction for the benefit of radiotherapy in NMBC patients,which might be used to guide clinical practice.

Process Modeling of Ferrofluids Flow for Magnetic Targeting Drug Delivery

Among the proposed techniques for delivering drugs to specific sites within the human body, magnetic targeting drug delivery surpasses due to its non-invasive character and its high targeting efficiency. Although there have been some analyses theoretically for magnetic drug targeting, very few researchers have addressed the hydrodynamic models of magnetic fluids in the blood vessel of human body. This paper presents a mathematical model to describe the hydrodynamics of ferrofluids as drug carriers flowing in a blood vessel under the applied magnetic field. A 3D flow field of magnetic particles in a blood vessel model is numerically simulated in order to further understand clinical application of magnetic targeting drug delivery. Simulation results show that magnetic nanoparticles can be enriched in a target region depending on the applied magnetic field intensity. Magnetic resonance imaging confirms the enrichment of ferrofluids in a desired body tissue of Sprague-Dawley rats. The simulation results coincide with those animal experiments. Results of the analysis provide the important information and can suggest strategies for improving delivery in favor of the clinical application.

Obesity,which can arise from genetic or environmental factors,has been shown to cause serious damages to the reproductive system.The ovary,as one of the primary regulators of female fertility,is a complex organ comprised of heterogeneous cell types that work together to maintain a normal ovarian microenvironment(OME).Despite its importance,the effect of obesity on the entire ovary remains poorly documented.In this study,we performed ovary single-cell and nanoscale spatial RNA sequencing to investigate how the OME changed under different kinds of obesity,including high-fat diet(HFD)induced obesity and Leptin ablation induced obesity(OB).Our results demonstrate that OB,but not HFD,dramatically altered the proportion of ovarian granulosa cells,theca-interstitial cells,luteal cells,and endothelial cells.Furthermore,based on the spatial dynamics of follicular development,we defined four subpopulations of granulosa cell and found that obesity drastically disrupted the differentiation of mural granulosa cells from small to large antral follicles.Functionally,HFD enhanced follicle-stimulating hormone(FSH)sensitivity and hormone conversion,while OB caused decreased sensitivity,inadequate steroid hormone conversion,and impaired follicular development.These differences can be explained by the differential expression pattern of the transcription factor Foxo1.Overall,our study provides a powerful and high-resolution resource for profiling obesity-induced OME and offers insights into the diverse effects of obesity on female reproductive disorders.

Chinese herbal medicine for hand-foot-and-mouth disease in children: An overview of systematic reviews

Objective:To summarize the use of Chinese herbal medicines (CHM) for the treatment of hand-foot-and-mouth disease (HFMD) in children and to provide high-level evidence for clinical decision-making.Methods:We conducted an overview of systematic reviews (SRs).Two English-language and four Chinese-language electronic databases were searched from inception to March 31,2018.Published SRs and meta-analyses evaluating CHM use in children with HFMD and reporting clinically-relevant outcomes such as time to fever resolution were eligible for inclusion in this overview.Reviews were accepted if the intervention featured CHM with or without other treatment.Two authors evaluated the methodological quality of the included SRs by using ASMTAR and ROBIS.Results:Thirty SRs comprising 90 244 children with HFMD were included in this overview of SRs.All SRs were published in Chinese between 2011 and 2017.All intervention arms received CHM with or without conventional treatment and were compared against control arms receiving no treatment,conventional treatment alone,or placebo.All 30 reviews reported the time to fever resolution and results demonstrated that CHM had a greater benefit in reducing fever compared with controls.Twenty-three reviews reported the time to rash resolution which presented similar results.Fourteen SRs reported the time to oral ulcer healing and CHM demonstrated a significantly reduced time to resolution compared to controls.The quality of the included SRs was low to moderate as assessed by the AMSTAR tool.Conclusion:Published reviews demonstrated potential benefits of CHM in children with HFMD.Overall,the methodological quality of reviews included in this overview of SRs was low and our findings should be interpreted with caution.We would strongly recommend that future SRs be designed and reported rigorously following PRISMA in order to provide more robust evidence on which to base clinical guidance.
