Metabolic and transcriptomic analyses elucidate a novel insight into the network for biosynthesis of carbohydrate and secondary metabolites in the stems of a medicinal orchid Dendrobium nobile

Dendrobium nobile is an important medicinal and nutraceutical *** the ingredients of *** have been identified as polysaccharides,alkaloids,amino acids,flavonoids and bibenzyls,our understanding of the metabolic pathways that regulate the synthesis of these compounds is ***,we used transcriptomic and metabolic analyses to elucidate the genes and metabolites involved in the biosynthesis of carbohydrate and several secondary metabolites in the stems of ***.A total of 1005 metabolites and 31,745 genes were detected in the stems of *** majority of these metabolites and genes were involved in the metabolism of carbohydrates(fructose,mannose,glucose,xylulose and starch),while some were involved in the metabolism of secondary metabolites(alkaloids,β-tyrosine,ferulic acid,4-hydroxybenzoate and chrysin).Our predicted regulatory network indicated that five genes(AROG,PYK,DXS,ACEE and HMGCR) might play vital roles in the transition from carbohydrate to alkaloid *** analysis identified that six genes(ALDO,PMM,BGLX,EGLC,XYLB and GLGA) were involved in carbohydrate metabolism,and two genes(ADT and CYP73A) were involved in secondary metabolite *** analyses also indicated that phosphoenol-pyruvate(PEP) was a crucial bridge that connected carbohydrate to alkaloid *** regulatory network between carbohydrate and secondary metabolite biosynthesis established will provide important insights into the regulation of metabolites and biological systems in Dendrobium species.

Mycorrhizal fungi are essential for the growth and development of both epiphytic(growing on trees)and lithophytic(growing on rocks)*** studies indicate that in lowland tropical areas,orchid mycorrhizal fungal compositions are correlated with the life form(i.e.,epiphytic,lithophytic,or terrestrial)of their host *** therefore tested if a similar correlation exists in an orchid distributed at higher *** corymbosa is an endangered ornamental orchid species that can be found as a lithophyte and epiphyte in subtropical to subalpine *** on high-throughput sequencing of the fungal internal transcribed spacer 2(ITS2)-rDNA region of mycorrhizae of ***,we detected 73 putative mycorrhizal fungal Operational Taxonomic Units(OTUs).The OTUs of two dominant lineages(Cantharellales and Sebacinales)detected from *** are phylogenetically different from those of other species within the genus Coelogyne,indicating that different orchid species prefer specific mycorrhizal *** also found that the Non-metric multidimensional scaling(NMDS)plots of orchid mycorrhizal fungi were not clustered with life form,the variations among orchid mycorrhizal fungal communities of different life forms were not significant,and most of the OTUs detected from epiphytic individuals were shared by the lithophytic plants,suggesting that orchid mycorrhizal associations of *** were not affected by life *** findings provide novel insights into mycorrhizal associations with endangered ornamental orchids.

Leaf physiological and anatomical responses of two sympatric Paphiopedilum species to temperature

Paphiopedilum dianthum and *** are two endangered orchid species,with high ornamental and conservation *** are sympatric species,but their leaf anatomical traits and flowering period have significant ***,it is unclear whether the differences in leaf structure of the two species will affect their adaptabilities to ***,we investigated the leaf photosynthetic,anatomical,and flowering traits of these two species at three sites with different temperatures(Kunming,16.7±0.2°C;Puer,17.7±0.2°C;Menglun,23.3±0.2°C)in southwest *** with those at Puer and Kunming,the values of light-saturated photosynthetic rate(Pmax).stomatai conductance(gs),leaf thickness(LT),and stomatai density(SD)in both species were lower at *** values of Pmax,gs,仃,adaxial cuticle thickness(CTad)and SD in *** were higher than those of *** at the three *** with ***,there were no flowering plants of *** at *** results indicated that both species were less resistance to high temperature,and *** had a stronger adaptability to high-temperature than *** findings can provide valuable information for the conservation and cultivation of Paphiopedilum species.

Differences in leaf physiological and morphological traits between Camellia japonica and Camellia reticulata

Plants of the genus Camellia are widely cultivated throughout the world as ornamentals because of their bright and large *** widely cultivated varieties are mainly derived from the mutant lines and hybrid progenies of Camellia japonica *** Camellia reticulata *** their geographical distributions and environmental adaptabilities are significantly different,no systematic comparison has been conducted between these two *** investigate differences in how these plants have adapted to their environments,we measured photosynthesis and 20 leaf functional traits of *** and *** grown under the same *** with ***,*** showed higher values for light saturation point,light-saturated photo synthetic rate,leaf dry mass per unit area and stomatal area,but lower values for apparent quantum efficiency,leaf size,stomatal density and leaf nitrogen content per unit *** area was positively correlated with light-saturated photosynthetic rate and light saturation point,but negatively correlated with stomatal *** differences between *** and *** were mainly reflected in their adaptations to light intensity and leaf morphological *** is better adapted to high light intensity than *** difference is related to the two species’ differing life fo ***,leaf morphological traits have played an important role in the light adaptation of *** and ***,and might be first noticed and selected during the breeding *** findings will contribute to the cultivation of camellia plants.

Aquatic vegetation is a vital component of natural river ecosystems,playing a crucial role in maintaining ecological balance,providing habitat and improving water ***,the presence of vegetation results in increased resistance in vegetated channels compared with non-vegetated channels,rendering traditional sediment movement predictions inadequate for the ***,the concept of a vegetation influence factor,denoted by CDah,has been proposed by previous researchers to represent the effect of vegetation on sediment movement in *** this study,we focus on exploring the vegetation resistance coefficient(CD)among the vegetation influence factors,evaluating two different calculation methods for vegetation resistance coefficient,and presenting two expressions through genetic algorithm analysis to predict the incipient flow velocity of sediment in vegetated *** predicted values from the new formulae show excellent agreement with measured data,highlighting the high accuracy of the proposed methods in predicting the incipient flow velocity of *** results provide a solid theoretical basis for understanding the influence of aquatic vegetation on sediment particle movement.

Plasmakinetic enucleation of prostate versus 160-W laser photoselective vaporization for the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia

To evaluate the safety and efficacy of plasmakinetic enucleation of the prostate （PKEP） for the treatment of symptomatic benign prostatic hyperplasia （BPH） compared with 160-W lithium triboride laser photoselective vaporization of the prostate （PVP）. From February 2011 to July 2012, a prospective nonrandomized study was performed. One-hundred one patients underwent PKEP, and 110 underwent PVP. No severe intraoperative complications were recorded, and none of the patients in either group required a blood transfusion. Shorter catheterization time （38.14 ± 23.64 h vs 72.54 ± 28.38 h, P 〈 0.001） and hospitalization （2.32 ± 1.25 days vs 4.07±1.23 days, P 〈 0.001） were recorded in the PVP group. At 12-month postoperatively, the PKEP group had a maintained and statistically improvement in International Prostate Symptom Score （IPSS）（4.07 ±2.07 vs 5.00 ±2.10; P〈 0.001）, quality of life （QoL）（1.08 ± 0.72 vs 1.35 ± 0.72; P= 0.007）, maximal urinary flow rate （Qmax）（24.75±5.87 ml s^-1 vs 22.03 ±5.04 ml s^-1; P 〈 0.001）, postvoid residual urine volume （PVR）（14,29 ± 6,97 ml vs 17.00±6.11 ml; P = 0,001）, and prostate-specific antigen （PSA） value （0.78 ±0.57 ng ml^-1 vs 1.27 ±1.07 ng ml^-1; P 〈 0.001）. Both PKEP and PVP relieve low urinary tract symptoms （LUTS） due to BPH with low complication rates. PKEP can completely remove prostatic adenoma while the total amount of tissue removed by PVP is less than that can be removed by PKER Based on our study of the follow-up, PKEP provides better postoperative outcomes than PVP.

Based on the existing plant layout and process flow,a simulation analysis was conducted using the Plant Simulation platform with the utilization efficiency of each station and production capacity of the dismantling system as indicators.A problem with long-term suspension in the disassembly process was *** on the two optimization directions of increasing material transportation equipment and expanding the buffer capacity,a cost-oriented optimization model is established.A genetic algorithm and model simulation were used to solve the *** optimization scheme that satisfies the production needs and has the lowest cost is *** results show that the optimized dismantling system solves the suspended work problem at the dismantling station and a significant improvement in productivity and station utilization efficiency compared with the previous system.

Congenital bronchoesophageal fistula in adults

AIM: To study the clinical characteristics, diagnosis and surgical treatment of congenital bronchoesophageal fi stulae in adults. METHODS: Eleven adult cases of congenital bronchoesophageal fistula diagnosed and treated in our hospital between May 1990 and August 2010 were reviewed. Its clinical presentations, diagnostic methods, anatomic type, treatment, and follow-up were recorded. RESULTS: Of the chief clinical presentations, nonspecific cough and sputum were found in 10 (90.9%), recurrent bouts of cough after drinking liquid food in 6 (54.6%), hemoptysis in 6 (54.6%), low fever in 4 (36.4%), and chest pain in 3 (27.3%) of the 11 cases, respectively. The duration of symptoms before diagnosis ranged 5-36.5 years. The diagnosis of congenital bronchoesophageal fistulae was established in 9 patients by barium esophagography, in 1 patient by esophagoscopy and in 1 patient by bronchoscopy, respectively. The congenital bronchoesophageal fistulae communicated with a segmental bronchus, a main bronchus, and an intermediate bronchus in 8, 2 and 1 patients, *** treatment of congenital bronchoesophageal fistulae involved excision of the fistula in 10 patients or division and suturing in 1 patient. The associated lung lesion was removed in all patients. No long-term sequelae were found during the postoperative follow-up except in 1 patient with bronchial fistula who accepted reoperation before recovery. CONCLUSION: Congenital bronchoesophageal fistula is rare in adults. Its most useful diagnostic method is esophagography. It must be treated surgically as soon as the diagnosis is established.
