Real-time quaking-induced conversion(RT-QuIC)assay is a newly established PrPSc-detecting method.The development of RT-QuIC improves the diagnosis of sporadic Creutzfeldt–Jakob disease(sCJD),showing good sensitivity and specificity in many countries when the method was used in cerebrospinal fluid(CSF)samples.However,in China,the sensitivity and specificity of RT-QuIC has yet to be determined due to the lack of definitive diagnosis samples.

In China,there are 544,000 sudden deaths each year.Cardiac arrest is one of the most common causes of sudden death,and 70%of cardiac arrests occur outside the hospital.[1,2]However,fewer than 1%of bystanders at cardiac arrest deaths in China are well-trained and capable of administering first aid.[3]Therefore,it is urgent to popularize first-aid knowledge in the Chinese population.

Perfuorinated compounds(PFCs)are toxic and widely present in the environment,and therefore effective adsorbents are required to remove PFCs from environmental water.In the present study,a new type of fuorinated biomass materials was synthesized via an ingenious fuorosilanization reaction.These adsorbents were applied for the adsorption of 13typical PFCs,including perfuorocarboxylic acids(PFCAs)and perfuorosulfonic acids(PFSAs).By comparing their adsorption performance,Fluorinated cedar slag(FCS)was discovered to have the best absorption efficiency and enabled highly efficient enrichment of PFCs.The adsorption recovery of FCS with the investigated PFCs is greater than 90%under the optimal adsorption condition.Ascribed to the high affinity of F-F sorbent-sorbate interaction,FCS had good adsorption capacities of PFCs from aqueous solution,with the maximum adsorption capacity of 15.80 mg/g for PFOS and 10.71 mg/g for PFOA,respectively.Moreover,the adsorption time could be achieved in a short time(8 min).Using the FCS absorbent,an innovative FCS-solid phase extraction assisted with high performance liquid chromatography-electrospray-tandem mass spectrometry(FCS-SPE-HPLC-ESI-MS/MS)method was first developed to sensitively detect PFCs in the environmental water samples.The intra-day and inter-day recovery rates of the 13 compounds ranged from 90.7%-104.3%,with the RSD of 2.1%-4.7%(intra-day)and 2.5%-8.5%(inter-day),respectively.This research demonstrates the potential of the newly fuoro-functionalized plant biomass to adsorb PFCs from environmental water,with the advantages of high adsorption efficiencies,high antiinterference,easy operation and low economic cost.

Habitat heterogeneity and biotic interactions mediate climate influences on seedling survival in a temperate forest

Seedling stage has long been recognized as the bottleneck of forest regeneration,and the biotic and abiotic processes that dominate at seedling stage largely affect the dynamics of forest.Seedlings might be particularly vulnerable to climate stress,so elucidating the role of interannual climate variation in fostering community dynamics is crucial to understanding the response of forest to climate change.Using seedling survival data of 69 woody species collected for five consecutive years from a 25-ha permanent plot in a temperate deciduous forest,we identified the effects of biotic interactions and habitat factors on seedling survival,and examined how those effects changed over time.We found that interannual climate variations,followed by biotic interactions and habitat conditions,were the most significant predictors of seedling survival.Understory light showed a positive impact on seedling mortality,and seedling survival responded differently to soil and air temperature.Effects of conspecific neighbor density were significantly strengthened with the increase of maximum air temperature and vapor pressure deficits in the growing season,but were weakened by increased maximum soil temperature and precipitation in the non-growing season.Surprisingly,seedling survival was strongly correlated with interannual climate variability at all life stages,and the strength of the correlation increased with seedling age.In addition,the importance of biotic and abiotic factors on seedling survival differed significantly among species-trait groups.Thus,the neighborhood-mediated effects on mortality might be significantly contributing or even inverting the direct effects of varying abiotic conditions on seedling survival,and density-dependent effects could not be the only important factor influencing seedling survival at an early stage.

Patterns of species diversity and its determinants in a temperate deciduous broad-leaved forest

Biodiversity conservation has long been a subject of extreme interest to community ecologists,with a particular focus on exploring the underlying causes of species diversity based on niche and neutral theories.This study aims to identify the potential determinants of species diversity in a deciduous broad-leaved forest in the transitional region from subtropical to temperate climate in China.We collected woody plant data and environmental variables in a fully mapped 25-ha permanent forest plot,partitioned the beta-diversity into local contributions(LCBD)and species contributions(SCBD),and then applied multivariate linear regression analysis to test the effects of biotic and abiotic factors on alpha-diversity,LCBD,and SCBD.We used variation partitioning in combination with environmental variables and spatial distance to determine the contribution of environment-related variations versus spatial variations.Our results showed that the indices of alpha-diversity(i.e.,species abundance and richness)were positively correlated with soil available phosphorus(P)and negatively with slope.For the betadiversity,environment and space together explained nearly half of the variations in community composition.Approximately 60%of the variation of LCBD in the understory layer,40%in the substory layer,and 29%in the canopy layer were jointly explained by topographic,soil and biological variables,with biotic factors playing a dominant role in determining the beta-diversity.Species abundance accounted for a large proportion of the variations in SCBD in each vertical stratum,and niche position(NP)was the ecological trait that significantly affected the variations in SCBD in the substory and canopy layers.Our findings help to gain better understanding on how species diversity in forest ecosystem responds to environmental conditions and how it is influenced by biotic factors and ecological traits of species.

The microstructures and mechanical properties of the directionally solidified Cu-15Ni-8Sn alloy were investigated at solidification rates ranging from 100 to 3000μm/s.The results showed that the solidification rate significantly affects the phase distribution of the as-cast Cu-15Ni-8Sn alloy.The primary and secondary dendritic spacing reduces and eventually becomes stable as the solidification rate increases.Meanwhile,the size of the primary phase decreases,and its distribution becomes more uniform.The most severe segregation problem of this alloy has been greatly improved.Upon solidification at 100μm/s,the as-cast Cu-15Ni-8Sn alloy consists of the α-Cu matrix,γ-CuNi_(2)Sn phase,discontinuous precipitation structure,modulated structure,and DO_(22) ordered phases.However,as the solidification rate increases,the discontinuous precipitation structure,modulated structures,and DO_(22) ordered phases decrease and even disappear,reducing hardness.As the solidification rate increases,after homogenization treatment,the composition and microhardness distributions of Cu-15Ni-8Sn alloy become more uniform.The time for homogenization is also shortened.It reduces production energy usage and facilitates further mechanical processing.

BACKGROUND Klebsiella pneumoniae(K.pneumoniae)used to affect mainly people with compromised immunity or weakened by other infections,but recent emergence of hypervirulent strains has increased infections even in healthy individuals.These infections include liver abscess,pneumonia,bacteremia,meningitis,necrotizing fasciitis,and endophthalmitis.Although metastatic infection by hypervirulent K.pneumoniae(hvKP)is increasingly recognized,co-infection with Cryptococcus neoformans(C.neoformans)meningitis in immunocompetent hosts is rare but fatal.So,it is necessary to determine the risk factors,complications,and comorbidity of this disease.CASE SUMMARY This report describes a 58-year-old man with hvKP pulmonary abscess,bacteremia,and meningitis,accompanied by fatal Cryptococcus meningitis.This patient presented with fever for 1 wk and drowsiness for 3 d.Laboratory findings revealed pulmonary abscess and bacteremia of K.pneumoniae.He was given intravenous antibiotic therapy,and the infection was under control for about 1 wk.However,his condition deteriorated rapidly because of metastatic purulent meningitis.Although hvKP and C.neoformans were isolated and confirmed,the patient died of spontaneous respiratory and cardiac arrest caused by cerebral hernia.CONCLUSION HvKP has emerged as a cause of metastatic infections in immunocompetent hosts.polymicrobial co-infections should be taken into consideration when metastatic infection is present.

Dormancy release and germination of Echinochloa crus-galli grains in relation to galactomannan-hydrolysing enzyme activity

Echinochloa crus-galli, one of the world＇s most serious weeds, influences seriously the yield and quality of cereal crop plant.It is well known that E.crus-galli grain is dormant, but its dormant type, as well as its dormancy release and germination in relation to galactomannan-hydrolysing enzyme activity were poorly understood.The cooperation of endo-β-mannanase（EC 3.***.1.78）, β-mannosidase（EC 3.***.1.25） and α-galactosidase（EC 3.***.1.22） can hydrolyze the cell walls rich in mannan-based polymers.In the present paper, the mature grains are used as experimental materials, we investigated the water uptake of grains, the effect of removing partial endosperm, after-ripening, stratification and phytohormone on grain germination, and the change in endo-β-mannanase, β-mannosidase and α-galactosidase activities of grains during after-ripening and germination.The results showed that the freshly-collected grains were water-permeable and had only phase I and II of water uptake, while the grains after-ripened for 150 d had an obvious phase III of water uptake.In alternating photoperiod, the germination of grains freshly-collected was zero at 10–35°C, and that of half grains was 11% at 20°C only.The grain germination was notably promoted by after-ripening and stratification, but not by gibberellic acid and 6-benzyladenine at 0.0001–1 mmol L–1.β-Mannosidase activity increased during 0 to 300 d of after-ripening and then decreased.The activity of endo-β-mannanase and α-galactosidase of grains decreased with after-ripening.During grain germination, endo-β-mannanase and β-mannosidase activities obviously increased, while α-galactosidase activity decreased.Our data showed that E.crus-galli grain was a deep physiological dormant, the dormancy release by after-ripening was related to an increasing β-mannosidase activity, and its germination was closely associated with an increasing endo-β-mannanase and β-mannosidase activity; which have provided new knowledge to decrease the harm of E.crus-galli on production of cereal crop plant.

Impact of urbanization on morbidity of hepatitis A:a national panel study in China during 2005–2018

Background The effect of urbanization on the morbidity of hepatitis A remains unclear. We aimed to estimate the association between various urbanization-related indices and hepatitis A morbidity in China.Methods Data on the annual morbidity of hepatitis A, urbanization-related measures (i.e., gross domestic product per capita, the number of hospitalization beds per 1000 persons, illiteracy rate, tap water coverage, motor vehicles per 100 persons, population density, and the proportion of arable land), and meteorological factors in 31 provincial-level administrative divisions of Chinese mainland during 2005–2018 were collected from the National Population and Health Science Data Sharing Platform, China Statistical Yearbooks, and the China Meteorological Data Sharing Service System, respectively. Generalized linear mixed models were applied to quantify the impacts of different urbanization-related indices on the morbidity of hepatitis A in China after adjusting for covariates.Results A total of 537,466 hepatitis A cases were reported in China during 2005–2018. The annual morbidity had a decline of 79.4% from 5.64 cases to 1.16 cases per 100,000 people. There were obvious spatial variations with higher morbidity in western China. Nationally, gross domestic product per capita and the number of hospitalization beds per 1000 persons increased from 14,040 to 64,644 CNY and from 2.45 to 6.03 during 2005–2018, respectively. The illiteracy rate decreased from 11.0 to 4.9%. Gross domestic product per capita [relative risk (RR) = 0.96, 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.92–0.99], and the number of hospitalization beds per 1000 persons (RR = 0.79, 95%CI: 0.75–0.83) were associated with the declined morbidity of hepatitis A. By contrast, the increased morbidity of hepatitis A was linked to the illiteracy rate (RR = 1.04, 95%CI: 1.02–1.06). Similar influential factors were detected for children and adults, with greater effects witnessed for children.Conclusions People in the western region suffered the heaviest burden of hepatitis

Objective:To perform a systematic review to assess the effectiveness and safety of Reduning Injection versus neuraminidase inhibitors in treatment of influenza.Methods:The MEDLINE,Embase,the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials(CENTRAL),Chinese Bio-medical Literature and Retrieval System(Sinomed),China National Knowledge Infrastructure Database(CNKI),China Science and Technology Journal Database(VIP),Wanfang Data Knowledge Service Platform and ClinicalTrails.gov were systematically searched from inception dates to May 2021 for randomized controlled trials(RCTs)exploring Reduning Injection alone or in combination with neuraminidase inhibitors in patients with influenza.Statistical analysis was performed using RevMan 5.4 and Stata 15.1.The qualities of the involved studies were assessed by the risk of bias according to the Cochrane handbook.The evidence quality of each outcome was evaluated by GRADEpro GDT.Results:Twelve trials with 1,460 patients were included.The included studies had a certain unclear or high risk of bias.Reduning Injection appeared to be more effective in shortening the fever clearance time(MD:-16.20 h,95%CI:-19.40 to-12.99,7 trials,814 patients,I^(2)=94%,very low certainty),fever alleviation time(MD:-4.09 h,95%CI:-4.22 to-3.96,3 trials,366 patients,I^(2)=0%,low certainty),cough alleviation time(MD:-21.34 h,95%CI:-41.56 to-1.11,2 trials,228 patients,I^(2)=89%,very low certainty),fatigue alleviation time(MD:-31.83 h,95%CI:-36.88 to-26.77,2 trials,270 patients,I^(2)=0%,low certainty),sore throat alleviation time(MD:-28.66 h,95%CI:-32.23 to-25.10,1 trial,150 patients,low certainty),and improving the total effective rate(RR:1.15,95%CI:1.06 to 1.25,10 trials,1,074 patients,I^(2)=76%,very low certainty).Besides,Reduning Injection seemed generally safe.Conclusions:This study provided low or very low evidence indicating Reduning Injection may be effective in the treatment of influenza and might be safe.Further rigorously designed studies are needed to confirm the effectiveness and safety of Re
