The bloom forming dinoflagellate, Ceratium furca, has been linked with coastal eutrophication worldwide in tropical and subtropical locations. During the summer of 2007, an unusual 6-month long bloom of C. furca was observed in Pago Pago Harbor, Tutuila Island, American Samoa. Incidents of dinoflagellate blooms in this area have not been previously reported. The bloom was first reported in May and dissipated in November 2007. In February-March 2009, a similar C. furca bloom was observed. During both blooms, no fish mortality events were reported. Maximum cell counts were observed on September 20, 2007 at 9 200 cell/mL. At this time, total nitrogen was measured at 1.2 mg/L while total phosphate was below detection limits. Changes in land use practices may have been the primary driver of these blooms. Intense fertilization of athletic fields coupled with ineffective management strategies is hypothesized to have a direct link to the increase in nutrients found in the Pago Pago Harbor and may have been the trigger for the initialization of these blooms. During 2008, the fields were not used due to an infestation of the fire ant, Solenopsis geminata. Once controlled, the fields were opened again in 2009 and fertilizers were applied in January, a month before the bloom was observed.

Since its launch in 2011, the Materials Genome Initiative（MGI） has drawn the attention of researchers from academia,government, and industry worldwide. As one of the three tools of the MGI, the use of materials data, for the first time, has emerged as an extremely significant approach in materials discovery. Data science has been applied in different disciplines as an interdisciplinary field to extract knowledge from data. The concept of materials data science has been utilized to demonstrate its application in materials science. To explore its potential as an active research branch in the big data era, a three-tier system has been put forward to define the infrastructure for the classification, curation and knowledge extraction of materials data.

As Moore＇s law based device scaling and accompanying performance scaling trends are slowing down, there is increasing interest in new technologies and computational models for fast and more energy-efficient information processing. Meanwhile, there is growing evidence that, with respect to traditional Boolean circuits and von Neumann processors, it will be challenging for beyond-CMOS devices to compete with the CMOS technology. Exploiting unique characteristics of emerging devices, especially in the context of alternative circuit and architectural paradigms, has the potential to offer orders of magnitude improvement in terms of power, performance, and capability. To take full advantage of beyond-CMOS devices, cross-layer efforts spanning from devices to circuits to architectures to algorithms are indispensable. This study examines energy-efficient neural network accelerators for embedded applications in this context. Several deep neural network accelerator designs based on cross-layer efforts spanning from alternative device technologies, circuit styles, to architectures are highlighted. Application-level benchmarking studies are presented. The discussions demonstrate that cross-layer efforts indeed can lead to orders of magnitude gain towards achieving extreme-scale energy-efficient processing.

A set of new parameterizations for the friction velocity and temperature scale over gently sloped terrain and in calm synoptic conditions are theoretically derived. The friction velocity is found to be proportional to the product of the square root of the total accumulated heating in the boundary layer and the sinusoidal function of the slope angle, while the temperature scale is proportional to the product of the boundary layer depth, the sinusoidal function of the slope angle and the potential temperature gradient in the free atmosphere. Using the new friction velocity parameterization, together with a parameterization of eddy diffusivity and an initial potential temperature profile around sunrise, an improved parameterization for the thermally induced upslope flow profile is derived by solving the Prandtl equations. The upslope flow profile is found to be simply proportional to the friction velocity.

BACKGROUND Large-cell neuroendocrine carcinoma(NEC)is an uncommon type of tumor that can occur in the *** aggressive cancer requires definitive ***,we describe the clinical characteristics and treatment of a postmenopausal woman with large cell NEC of the *** SUMMARY A 55-year-old Asian female presented with a 1-year history of postmenopausal vaginal *** ultrasound revealed a thickened endometrium(30.2 mm)and a hypervascular *** tomography revealed that the tumor had invaded more than half of the myometrium and spread to the pelvic lymph *** tumor marker,carcinoembryonic antigen,was elevated(3.65 ng/mL).Endocervical biopsy revealed high-grade endometrial *** underwent radical hysterectomy,bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy,omentectomy,and bilateral pelvic and para-aortic lymph node *** examination revealed mixed neuroendocrine and endometrioid adenocarcinoma,pT2N0M0,grade 3,and International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics stage *** showed moderate estrogen and progesterone receptor expressions(20%and 1%,respectively),focal CD56 expression(NEC marker),positive staining for vimentin,p53(wild type),and ki67(90%),and loss of expression of PMS2(Lynch syndrome marker).The patient received five cycles of cisplatin and etoposide after *** recurrence was noted after 5 *** We report the characteristics and successful management of a rare case of large cell endometrial NEC concomitant with Lynch syndrome.
