Serum Lp(a) levels in patients with liver disease

Objective:The study was conducted to evaluate the effect of liver diseases on serum Lp(a) levels and also to study the relationship between Lp(a) levels with other lipid parameters and liver function tests in 32 hyperbilirubinemia patients with total bilirubin>3mg/*** results were compared with 20 healthy age matched individuals. methods:Serum obtained from venous blood sample are used for estimating total cholesterol(TC), triglyceride(TG),high density lipoprotein cholesterol(HDL-c),low density lipoprotein cholesterol(LDL-c ), very low density lipoprotein cholesterol(VLDL-c),total protein(TP),albumin(ALB),total bilirubin,direct bilirubin,aspartate amino tranferase(AST),alanine amino transferase(ALT),alkaline phosphatase(ALP), gamma glutamyl transferase(GGT),lipoprotein(a)[Lp(a)],serum ***:There was significant decrease in serum Lp(a) levels in liver disease patients and the decrease was direcdy correlated with reduced serum albumin levels and inversely with liver function ***:Thus the present study indicates hepatic synthetic damage has possible biochemical basis for the reduction of serum Lp(a)

Prescription pattern of anti-malarial drugs in a tertiary care hospital

Objective:To evaluate the prescribing pattern of anti malarial drugs in a tertiary care hospital. methods:A prospective cross-sectional study was conducted for 6 months of patients visiting in Basaveshwar Teaching and General Hospital,*** were analyzed for various drug use ***:A total of 212 prescriptions were collected,with 136(64.15%) male and 76(35.85%) *** were 128(60.37%) Plasmodium vivax cases and 84(39.63%) Plasmodium falciparum *** Plasmodium vivax cases were treated with chloroquine alone and among these 16(12.5%) recieved radical treatment with primaquine along with *** 84 patients with Pasmodium falciparum,40 patients received single drug such as quinine/ mefloquinine/artesunate/*** 44 patients received multidrug regime like,quinine+artesunate(54.54%),quinine+mefloquine(27.27%) and quinine+arteether (18.18%).Chloroquine was not administered to any of the patients with Plasmodium falciparum *** most common adverse effects with chloroquine were anorexia,nausea,vomiting and tinnitus in 9.37% of the *** quinine it was nausea and vomiting in 17.64% ,tinnitus in 11.76% and hypoglycemia in 2.1% of ***:Our study found the perennial favorites like chloroquine for Plasmodium vivax and quinine for Plasmodium falciparum were the most effective *** the severe Plasmodium falciparum cases the artesunate derivatives and combination of artesunate with quinine/mefloquine were most effective with fewer incidences of side effects.

Antifertility effect of ethanolic extract of Amalakyadi churna in male albino mice

Aim: To evaluate the antifertility activity of the ethanolic extract of Amalakyadi churna by oral administration in male albino mice. methods: The ethanol extract of Amalakyadi churna at the dose of 250 mg/kg and 400 mg/ kg body weight was administered orally for 30 days to adult male mice. On day 31, the mice were sacrificed and the testis and accessory reproductive organs were removed and weighed. The organs were processed for biochemical estimation and histological work. Results: Treatment with Amalakyadi churna resulted in decrease in the weights of testis and accessory reproductive organs. The diameters of testis, seminiferous tubules and Leydig cell nucleus were decreased. The spermatogenic elements, like spermatogonia, spermatocytes and spermatids in the testis were reduced significantly as well as the sperm count in cauda epididymis. There was a significant reduction in the protein, glycogen, DNA and RNA contents and the activity of acid phosphatase in the testis of extract treated mice compared with the control. The cholesterol content and the alkaline phophatase activity were increased significantly in treated mice. Conclusion: Amalakyadi churna extract arrests spermatogenesis in male mice without noticeable side effects.
