Studies in animals indicate that sevoflurane exposure in the second trimester of pregnancy has harmful effects on the learning and memory of offspring.Whether an enriched environment can reverse the damage of sevoflurane exposure in the second trimester of pregnancy on the learning and memory of rat offspring remains unclear.In this study,rats at 14 days of pregnancy were exposed to 3.5%sevoflurane for 2 hours and their offspring were treated with an enriched environment for 20 successive days.We found that the enriched environment for offspring increased nestin and Ki67 levels in hippocampal tissue,increased hippocampal neurogenesis,inhibited glycogen synthase kinase 3βactivity,and increased the expression of cell proliferation-relatedβ-catenin and apoptosis-related Bcl-2,indicating that an enriched environment reduces sevoflurane-induced damage by increasing the proliferation of stem cells in the hippocampus.These findings suggest that an enriched environment can reverse the effects of sevoflurane inhaled by rats during the second trimester of pregnancy on learning and memory of offspring.This study was approved by the Animal Ethics Committee of Shengjing Hospital of China Medical University(approval No.2018PS07K)on January 2,2018.

Sevoflurane is the most commonly used volatile anesthetic during pregnancy.The viability of neural stem cells directly affects the development of the brain.However,it is unknown whether the use of sevoflurane during the second trimester affects the survival of fetal neural stem cells.Therefore,in this study,we investigated whether exposure to sevoflurane in mid-gestation induces apoptosis of neural stem cells and behavioral abnormalities.On gestational day 14,pregnant rats were anesthetized with 2% or 3.5% sevoflurane for 2 hours.The offspring were weaned at 28 days and subjected to the Morris water maze test.The brains were harvested to examine neural stem cell apoptosis by immunofluorescence and to measure Nestin and SOX-2 levels by western blot assay at 6,24 and 48 hours after anesthesia as well as on postnatal day（P） 0,14 and 28.Vascular endothelial growth factor（VEGF） and phosphoinositide 3-kinase（PI3 K）/AKT pathway protein levels in fetal brain at 6 hours after anesthesia were assessed by western blot assay.Exposure to high-concentration（3.5%） sevoflurane during mid-gestation increased escape latency and path length to the platform,and it reduced the average duration spent in the target quadrant and platform crossing times.At 6,24 and 48 hours after anesthesia and at P0,P14 and P28,the percentage of Nestin/terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase d UTP nick end labeling（TUNEL）-positive cells was increased,but Nestin and SOX-2 protein levels were decreased in the hippocampus of the offspring.At 6 hours after anesthesia,VEGF,PI3 K and phospho-AKT（p-AKT） levels were decreased in the fetal brain.These changes were not observed in animals given low-concentration（2%） sevoflurane exposure.Together,our findings indicate that exposure to a high concentration of sevoflurane（3.5%） in mid-gestation decreases VEGF,PI3 K and p-AKT protein levels and induces neural stem cell apoptosis,thereby causing learning and memory dysfunction in the offspring.

Mild intrauterine hypoperfusion(MIUH)is a serious pathological event that affects the growth and development of fetuses and offspring.MIUH can lead to growth restriction,low birth weight,neurodevelopmental disorders,and other adverse clinical outcomes.To study the effects of MIUH on learning and memory function in offspring,a model of MIUH was established by placing a coil(length 2.5 mm,diameter 0.24 mm)on the uterine artery and ovarian uterine artery of Sprague-Dawley rats in the second trimester of pregnancy(day 17).Next,120 mg/kg lithium chloride(the MIUH+Li group)or normal saline(the MIUH group)was injected intraperitoneally into these rats.In addition,120 mg/kg lithium chloride(the Li group)or normal saline(the SHAM group)was injected intraperitoneally into pregnant rats without coil placement.The Morris water maze was used to detect changes in learning and memory ability in the offspring at 4 weeks after birth.In the MIUH group,the escape latency and journey length before reaching the platform were both increased,and the number of times that the platform was crossed and the activity time in the target quadrant within 90 seconds were both decreased compared with the SHAM group.Immunofluorescence double staining and western blot assays demonstrated that hippocampal nestin and Ki67(both cell-proliferation-related proteins)expression was significantly downregulated in the MIUH group compared with the SHAM group.Furthermore,western blot assays were conducted to investigate changes in related signaling pathway proteins in the brains of offspring rats,and revealed that glycogen synthase kinase 3β(GSK3β)expression was upregulated andβ-catenin expression was downregulated in the MIUH group compared with the SHAM group.In addition,compared with the MIUH group,the expression levels of p-GSK3βandβ-catenin were upregulated in the MIUH+Li group.These results suggest that MIUH may affect learning and memory function in rat offspring by regulating the GSK3βsignaling pathway.The experimental procedures were approved by Anim

Nutrient levels in the artificial channel constructed for the Middle Route Project are significant indicators of water quality safety and aquatic ecological integrity for this large,interbasin scheme.However,the distribution and transport of nutrients along the channel were poorly understood.Based on a time-series dataset as well as mass balance and material flow analysis methods,the water and nutrient transport fluxes in the Middle Route of the South-to-North Water Diversion Project were identified in this study.The results indicate that the nutrient concentrations varied considerably with time,but there was no significant difference among the 30 stations of the main channel.Seasonal temperature difference was the major factor in the large fluctuations of water quality indicators over time.The nutrient loadings varied with the water volume outputs from the main channel to the waterreceiving cities.Atmospheric deposition was an important source of nutrients in the main channel,accounting for 9.13%,20.6%,and 0.635%of the nitrogen,phosphorus,and sulfur input from the Danjiangkou Reservoir,respectively.In 2021,a net accumulation of 988 tons of N,29 tons of P,and 2,540 tons of S,respectively,were present in the main channel.The increase of these external and internal nutrient loadings would cause water quality fluctuation and deterioration in some local sections of the main channel.Our study quantified the spatial and temporal patterns of nutrient transport in the Middle Route and revealed the ecological effects on the aquatic environment,assisting authorities on the project to develop effective water conservation strategies.

Long non-coding RNAs(lncRNAs)function as key modulators in mammalian immunity,particularly due to their involvement in lncRNA-mediated competitive endogenous RNA(ceRNA)crosstalk.Despite their recognized significance in mammals,research on lncRNAs in lower vertebrates remains limited.In the present study,we characterized the first immune-related lncRNA(pol-lnc78)in the teleost Japanese flounder(Paralichthys olivaceus).Results indicated that pol-lnc78 acted as a ceRNA for pol-miR-n199-3p to target the sterile alpha and armadillo motif-containing protein(SARM),the fifth discovered member of the Toll/interleukin 1(IL-1)receptor(TIR)adaptor family.This ceRNA network regulated the antibacterial responses of flounder via the Toll-like receptor(TLR)signaling pathway.Specifically,SARM acted as a negative regulator and exacerbated bacterial infection by inhibiting the expression of inflammatory cytokines IL-1βand tumor necrosis factor-α(TNF-α).Pol-miR-n199-3p reduced SARM expression by specifically interacting with the 3’untranslated region(UTR),thereby promoting SARM-dependent inflammatory cytokine expression and protecting the host against bacterial dissemination.Furthermore,pol-lnc78 sponged pol-miR-n199-3p to ameliorate the inhibition of SARM expression.During infection,the negative regulators pol-lnc78 and SARM were significantly down-regulated,while pol-miR-n199-3p was significantly up-regulated,thus favoring host antibacterial defense.These findings provide novel insights into the mechanisms underlying fish immunity and open new horizons to better understand ceRNA crosstalk in lower vertebrates.

Flashover Characteristics of Dry Band-water band on Hydrophobic Surfaces

Due to their outstanding anti-flashover characteristics,composite insulators have been extensively applied in power systems.A lot of research has investigated flashover characteristics of hydrophobic specimens with artificial water droplets.However,the phenomenon is not consistent with that of the contaminated composite insulators.On the test specimens covered with water droplets,there is no obvious leakage current before the flashover and no obvious relationship between flashover voltage and the conductivity of water droplets.On the contaminated composite insulator surface,there are short continuous arcs on the insulators before critical flashover,making insulators look like a luminous lantern.Considering that under these two conditions,the proportion of water along the insulation distance is different,the flashover characteristic of“dry band-water band”on a hydrophobicity surface is analyzed in the present study.The influence of the water band parameter(including length,width,and conductivity)as well as the length of dry band is studied.On this basis,the arc generation and development process of the surface covered with“dry band-water band”is analyzed.The research results improve the understanding of the flashover process on contaminated composite insulators.

This paper investigates an analytical optimal pose tracking control problem for chaser spacecraft during the close-range proximity operations with a non-cooperative space target subject to attitude tumbling and unknown orbital maneuvering.Firstly,the relative translational motion between the orbital target and the chaser spacecraft is described in the Line-of-Sight(LOS)coordinate frame along with attitude quaternion dynamics.Then,based on the coupled 6-Degree of Freedom(DOF)pose dynamic model,an analytical optimal control action consisting of constrained optimal control value,application time and its duration are proposed via exploring the iterative sequential action control algorithm.Meanwhile,the global closed-loop asymptotic stability of the proposed predictive control action is presented and discussed.Compared with traditional proximity control schemes,the highlighting advantages are that the application time and duration of the devised controller is applied discretely in light of the influence of the instantaneous pose configuration on the pose tracking performance with less energy consumptions rather than at each sample time.Finally,three groups of illustrative examples are organized to validate the effectiveness of the proposed analytical optimal pose tracking control scheme.

Selective adsorption of tetracycline by b-CD-immobilized sodium alginate aerogel coupled with ultrafiltration for reclaimed water

In this work,a novel composite material based on b-cyclodextrin-immobilized sodium alginate aerogel(b-CD/NaAlg)was developed utilizing cross-linker of epichlorohydrin and applied as an adsorbent to remove tetracycline antibiotics from reclaimed wastewater.A series of characterizations were utilized to confirm the successful synthesis of the adsorbent and this b-CD/NaAlg presented a three-dimensional network at the nanoscale or microscale.Under optimal conditions(pH=4,t=8 h,b-CD:NaAlg=9,adsorbent dosage=1.5 g·L^(-1)),the maximum removal rate of b-CD/NaAlg to tetracycline was 70%.The adsorption behavior of tetracycline on b-CD/NaAlg conformed to the Freundlich isotherm model(R^(2)=0.9977)and the pseudo-second-order kinetic model(R^(2)=0.9993).Moreover,the adsorbent still removed 55.3%of tetracycline after five cycles.Specially,the adsorbent was integrated with ultrafiltration to adsorb tetracycline antibiotics from simulated reclaimed wastewater,and the removal rate of tetracycline reached 78.9%within 2 h.The existence of Cr(VI)had a negligible impact on tetracycline removal,while the presence of humic acid exhibited a promoting effect.The possible adsorption mechanisms were also elucidated through X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and density functional theory analysis.In summary,b-CD/NaAlg represents an environmentally friendly,efficient,and sustainable adsorbent for removing tetracycline antibiotics from reclaimed water.

Distribution and bioavailability of mercury in size-fractioned atmospheric particles around an ultra-low emission power plant in Southwest China

Ultra-low emission(ULE)technology retrofits significantly impact the particulate-bound mercury(Hg)emissions from coal-fired power plants(CFPPs);however,the distribution and bioavailability of Hg in size-fractioned particulate matter(PM)around the ULE-retrofitted CF-PPs are less understood.Here,total Hg and its chemical speciation in TSP(total suspended particles),PM_(10)(aerodynamic particle diameter≤10μm)and PM_(2.5)(aerodynamic particle diameter≤2.5μm)around a ULE-retrofitted CFPP in Guizhou Province were quantified.Atmospheric PM_(2.5)concentration was higher around this ULE-retrofitted CFPP than that in the intra-regional urban cities,and it had higher mass Hg concentration than other sizefractioned PM.Total Hg concentrations in PM had multifarious sources including CFPP,vehicle exhaust and biomass combustion,while they were significantly higher in autumn and winter than those in other seasons(P40%).Mass concentrations of exchangeable,HCl-soluble,elemental,and residual Hg in PM_(2.5)were higher than those in other size-fractioned PM,and were markedly elevated in autumn and winter(P<0.05).In PM_(2.5),HCl-soluble Hg presented a significantly positive relationship with elemental Hg(P<0.05),while residual Hg showed the significantly positive relationships with HCl-soluble Hg and elemental Hg(P<0.01).Overall,these results suggested that atmospheric PM-bound Hg around the ULE-retrofitted CFPP tends to accumulate in finer PM,and has higher bioavailable fractions,while has potential transformation between chemical speciation.
