Are bowel symptoms and psychosocial features different in irritable bowel syndrome patients with abdominal discomfort compared to abdominal pain?

BACKGROUND The Rome IV criteria eliminated abdominal discomfort for irritable bowel syndrome(IBS), which was previously included in Rome III. There are questions as to whether IBS patients with abdominal discomfort(seen in Rome III but not Rome IV) are different from those with abdominal pain(Rome IV).AIM To compare bowel symptoms and psychosocial features in IBS patients diagnosed with Rome III criteria with abdominal discomfort, abdominal pain, and pain &discomfort.METHODS We studied IBS patients meeting Rome III criteria. We administered the IBS symptom questionnaire, psychological status, and IBS quality of life. Patients were classified according to the predominant abdominal symptom associated with defecation into an only pain group, only discomfort group, and pain & discomfort group. We compared bowel symptoms, extraintestinal symptoms, IBS quality of life, psychological status and healthcare-seeking behaviors, and efficacy among the three groups. Finally, we tested risk factors for symptom reporting in IBS patients.RESULTS Of the 367 Rome III IBS patients enrolled, 33.8%(124 cases) failed to meet Rome IV criteria for an IBS diagnosis. There were no meaningful differences between the pain group(n = 233) and the discomfort group(n = 83) for the following:(1) Frequency of defecatory abdominal pain or discomfort;(2) Bowel habits;(3) Coexisting extragastrointestinal pain;(4) Comorbid anxiety and depression;and(5) IBS quality of life scores except more patients in the discomfort group reported mild symptom than the pain group(22.9% vs 9.0%). There is a significant tendency for patients to report their defecatory and non-defecatory abdominal symptom as pain alone, or discomfort alone, or pain & discomfort(all P < 0.001).CONCLUSION IBS patients with abdominal discomfort have similar bowel symptoms and psychosocial features to those with abdominal pain. IBS symptoms manifesting abdominal pain or discomfort may primarily be due to different sensation and reporting experience.

Prevalence and Factors Associated with Female Sexual Dysfunction in Beijing, China

Background： Female sexual dysfunction （FSD） is a highly prevalent and often underestimated problem. However, large-scale, population-based epidemiological surveys of FSD are scarce in China. The present study was conducted to evaluate the prevalence and the potential risk factors of FSD across a selection of social groups in Beijing, China, based on the Female Sexual Function Index （FSFI）. Methods： A cross-sectional study based on the multiple-stage cluster sampling was performed with adult women throughout the Dongcbeng and Shunyi districts of Beijing. The Chinese version of FSFI was used, as well as questions on demographic characteristics, the disease-related context, and social relationships. Results： A total of 6000 consecutive women entered this study, with an actual response from 5024 women, corresponding to a response rate of 83.7%. A total of 4697 （78.3%） questionnaires were effective. The prevalence of adult FSD in Beijing was 2973 （63.3%） using a score of 26.55 as the boundary value, whereas the total mean FSFI score was 23.92 ~ 6.37. However, 1423 （30.3%） women did not seek help. By multivariate logistic regression analysis, the possible potential risk factors included age （odds ratio [OR] = 1.051 ）, dissatisfaction with the spouse＇s sexual ability （OR = 3.520）, poor marital affection （OR = 2.087）, spouse sexual difficulties （OR = 1.720）, dissatisfaction with married life （OR = 1.476）, living in a rural area （OR = 1.292）, chronic pelvic pain （OR = 1.261）, chronic disease （OR = 1.534）, previous pelvic surgery （OR = 1.605）, vaginal delivery （OR = 2.285）, lower education （OR = 3.449） and postmenopausal （OR = 3.183）. Conclusions： As suggested by the FSFI scores, female sexual problems are highly prevalent in Beijing. Dissatisfaction with the spouse＇s sexual ability, poor marital affection, sexual difficulties of the spouse, dissatisfaction with the marriage, rural life, CPP, and postmenopausal were conceivable risk factors for FSD in Beijing women.

Role of adaptation measures in addressing heatwave exposure in China

Heatwave exposure has increased dramatically because of climate warming and population growth,along with their interactive effects.However,effective adaptation measures can reduce these impacts.Nonetheless,the dynamic changes,regional inequality in adaptive capacity and their potential contributions to reducing exposure in the future remain unclear.This study quantifies the impact of adaptive capacity and underscores regional variations in heatwave magnitudes,population exposure and adaptation levels in China.We projected the future adaptive capacity using air-conditioner penetration,factoring in climate cooling requirements and individuals'purchasing power.Utilising population and gross domestic product(GDP)data from four Shared Socioeconomic Pathways(SSP1,SSP2,SSP3 and SSP5)and daily temperature data from four SSP-based emission scenarios(SSP1-2.6,SSP2-4.5,SSP3-7.0 and SSP5-8.5),we estimated heatwave duration,population exposure and avoided impacts through adaptation across China and its sub-regions.Results show a substantial increase in heatwave duration in Southwest and Southern China,especially under the SSP5-8.5 scenario,with a projection of 163.2±36.7 d during 2081-2100.Under the SSP3|SSP3-7.0 scenario,total exposure reaches 156.4±76.8 billion person d per year,which is the highest among all scenarios and 23 times greater than that in 1986-2005 without adaptation.Upon considering adaptation measures,a noteworthy reduction in population exposure is observed,especially in the SSP3|SSP3-7.0 and SSP5JSSP5-8.5 scenarios,with reductions of(62.6±3.9)%and(65.8±5.1)%,respectively,compared with the scenario without adaptation during 2081-2100.Remarkable regional disparities in avoided impacts are also evident,with variations of up to 50%across different regions.The implementation of effective and environmentally friendly adaptation measures can notably address climate change,thereby alleviating the profound threats posed to human well-being.

For a quasi-split Satake diagram,we define a modified q-Weyl algebra,and show that there is an algebra homomorphism between it and the corresponding■quantum group.In other words,we provide a differential operator approach to■quantum groups.Meanwhile,the oscillator representations of■quantum groups are obtained.The crystal basis of the irreducible subrepresentations of these oscillator representations are constructed.

LncRNA pol-lnc78 as a ceRNA regulates antibacterial responses via suppression of pol-miR-n199-3p-mediated SARM down-regulation in Paralichthys olivaceus

Long non-coding RNAs(lncRNAs)function as key modulators in mammalian immunity,particularly due to their involvement in lncRNA-mediated competitive endogenous RNA(ceRNA)crosstalk.Despite their recognized significance in mammals,research on lncRNAs in lower vertebrates remains limited.In the present study,we characterized the first immune-related lncRNA(pol-lnc78)in the teleost Japanese flounder(Paralichthys olivaceus).Results indicated that pol-lnc78 acted as a ceRNA for pol-miR-n199-3p to target the sterile alpha and armadillo motif-containing protein(SARM),the fifth discovered member of the Toll/interleukin 1(IL-1)receptor(TIR)adaptor family.This ceRNA network regulated the antibacterial responses of flounder via the Toll-like receptor(TLR)signaling pathway.Specifically,SARM acted as a negative regulator and exacerbated bacterial infection by inhibiting the expression of inflammatory cytokines IL-1βand tumor necrosis factor-α(TNF-α).Pol-miR-n199-3p reduced SARM expression by specifically interacting with the 3’untranslated region(UTR),thereby promoting SARM-dependent inflammatory cytokine expression and protecting the host against bacterial dissemination.Furthermore,pol-lnc78 sponged pol-miR-n199-3p to ameliorate the inhibition of SARM expression.During infection,the negative regulators pol-lnc78 and SARM were significantly down-regulated,while pol-miR-n199-3p was significantly up-regulated,thus favoring host antibacterial defense.These findings provide novel insights into the mechanisms underlying fish immunity and open new horizons to better understand ceRNA crosstalk in lower vertebrates.

Effects of iron oxide on crystallization behavior and spatial distribution of spinel in stainless steel slag

Chromium plays a vital role in stainless steel due to its ability to improve the corrosion resistance of the latter.However,the re-lease of chromium from stainless steel slag(SSS)during SSS stockpiling causes detrimental environmental issues.To prevent chromium pollution,the effects of iron oxide on crystallization behavior and spatial distribution of spinel were investigated in this work.The results revealed that FeO was more conducive to the growth of spinels compared with Fe2O3 and Fe3O4.Spinels were found to be mainly distrib-uted at the top and bottom of slag.The amount of spinel phase at the bottom decreased with the increasing FeO content,while that at the top increased.The average particle size of spinel in the slag with 18wt%FeO content was 12.8μm.Meanwhile,no notable structural changes were observed with a further increase in FeO content.In other words,the spatial distribution of spinel changed when the content of iron oxide varied in the range of 8wt%to 18wt%.Finally,less spinel was found at the bottom of slag with a FeO content of 23wt%.

Effects of Acupotomy on Immobilization-Induced Gastrocnemius Contracture and Fibrosis in Rats via Wnt/β-Catenin Signaling

Objective: To determine whether acupotomy ameliorates immobilization-induced muscle contracture and fibrosis via Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathway. Methods: Thirty Wistar rats were randomly divided into 5 groups(n=6) by a random number table, including control, immobilization, passive stretching, acupotomy, and acupotomy 3 weeks(3-w) groups. The rat model of gastrocnemius contracture was established by immobilizing the right hind limb in plantar flexion for 4 weeks. Rats in the passive stretching group received passive stretching at gastrocnemius, a daily series of 10 repetitions for 30 s each at 30-s intervals for 10 consecutive days. Rats in the acupotomy and acupotomy 3-w groups received acupotomy once and combined with passive stretching at gastrocnemius a daily series of 10 repetitions for 30 s each at 30-s intervals for 10 consecutive days. Additionally, rats in the acupotomy 3-w group were allowed to walk freely for 3 weeks after 10-day therapy. After treatment, range of motion(ROM), gait analysis [i.e., paw area, stance/swing and maximum ratio of paw area to paw area duration(Max dA/dT)], gastrocnemius wet weight and the ratio of muscle wet weight to body weight(MWW/BW) were tested. Gastrocnemius morphometric and muscle fiber cross-sectional area(CSA) were assessed by hematoxylin-eosin staining. Fibrosis-related mRNA expressions(i.e., Wnt 1, β-catenin, axin-2, α-smooth muscle actin, fibronectin, and types Ⅰ and Ⅲ collagen) were measured using real-time quantitative polymerase chain reactions. Wnt 1, β-catenin and fibronectin concentrations were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Types Ⅰ and Ⅲ collagen in the perimysium and endomysium were analyzed using immunofluorescence. Results: Compared with the control group, ROM, gait function, muscle weight, MWW/BW and CSA were significantly decreased in the immobilization group(all P <0.01), while protein levels of types Ⅰ and Ⅲ collagen, Wnt 1, β-catenin, fibronectin and mRNA levels of fibrosis-related genes were obviously increased(all P<0.01). Structural evolution and high-temperature sensing performance of polymer-derived SiAlBCN ceramics

In situ temperature monitoring has become extremely imperative in high-temperature harsh environments and polymer-derived ceramics(PDCs)as sensing materials have attracted great attention.However,the stability and oxidation/corrosion resistance of PDCs cannot be simultaneously achieved at the moment,limiting their practical application.Herein,polymer-derived SiAlBCN ceramics were synthesized via polymer conversion method under different pyrolysis temperatures.Their microstructure evolution,high temperature sensing properties,and stability were investigated in detail.The results show that the amorphous SiAlBCN phase grows more orderly and the size of the free carbon phase enlarges with the increasing temperature.The defect concentration displays a decreasing tendency.Concurrently,the SiAlBCN ceramics as sensing materials exhibit a good temperature-resistance property from roo temperature to 1100℃.The fabricated SiAlBCN temperature sensor possesses excellent stability,repeatability,and accuracy.Moreover,SiAlBCN ceramics exhibit distinguished oxidation/corrosion resistance after 100 h treatment at 1200℃in a water/oxygen environment,which is attributed to their low corrosive rate constant(0.57 mg/(cm^(2)·h))and oxidative rate constant(3.43 mg^(2)/(cm^(4)·h)).Therefore,polymer-derived SiAlBCN ceramics as sensing materials,which possess outstanding stability and oxidation/corrosion resistance,have great potential for in-situ monitoring of extreme environmental temperatures in the future.

Distribution of oxide inclusions in H13 castings under super-gravity field with multi-stage rotation speeds

The 42 kg industrial H13 castings were prepared by different super-gravity fields with multi-rotation speeds,and the distribution of oxide inclusions in the castings was studied.In addition,the inward movement Reynolds number and inward movement time of oxide inclusions as well as the solidification time of molten steel at different positions in the castings were calculated to clarify the removal mechanism of oxide inclusions in super-gravity field.The results show that the large size(i.e.,greater than 10μm)oxide inclusions are mainly concentrated in the inner and outer parts of the super-gravity castings with constant rotation speed(500 r min^(-1))and five-stage rotation speeds(500,600,750,850,and 950 r min^(-1)),respectively,while there are no large oxide inclusions in the super-gravity castings with three-stage rotation speeds(500,600,and 750 r min^(-1)).Although an increase in the particle size of inclusion and the rotation speed in super-gravity field is conducive to the increase in the inward movement Reynolds number of oxide inclusions and reduction in the inward movement time of oxide inclusions,it will reduce the local solidification time of molten steel.In the range of the rotation speed studied,the super-gravity field with three-stage rotation speeds has the best effect on the removal of inclusions in H13 molten steel.

Scutellarein Ameliorated Chondrocyte Inflammation and Osteoarthritis in Rats

Objective:Osteoarthritis(OA)is a degenerative joint disorder characterized by the gradual degradation of joint cartilage and local inflammation.This study aimed to investigate the anti-OA effect of scutellarein(SCU),a single-unit flavonoid compound obtained from Scutellaria barbata D.Don,in rats.Methods:The extracted rat chondrocytes were treated with SCU and IL-1β.The chondrocytes were divided into control group,IL-1βgroup,IL-1β+SCU 50µmol/L group,and IL-1β+SCU 100µmol/L group.Morphology of rat chondrocytes was observed by toluidine blue and safranin O staining.CCK-8 method was used to detect the cytotoxicity of SCU.ELISA,qRT-PCR,Western blotting,immunofluorescence,SAβ-gal staining,flow cytometry,and bioinformatics analysis were applied to evaluate the effect of SCU on rat chondrocytes under IL-1βintervention.Additionally,anterior cruciate ligament transection(ACL-T)was used to establish a rat OA model.Histological changes were detected by safranin O/fast green,hematoxylin-eosin(HE)staining,and immunohistochemistry.Results:SCU protected cartilage and exhibited anti-inflammatory effects via multiple mechanisms.Specifically,it could enhance the synthesis of extracellular matrix in cartilage cells and inhibit its degradation.In addition,SCU partially inhibited the nuclear factor kappa-B/mitogen-activated protein kinase(NF-κB/MAPK)pathway,thereby reducing inflammatory cytokine production in the joint cartilage.Furthermore,SCU significantly reduced IL-1β-induced apoptosis and senescence in rat chondrocytes,further highlighting its potential role in OA treatment.In vivo experiments revealed that SCU(at a dose of 50 mg/kg)administered for 2 months could significantly delay the progression of cartilage damage,which was reflected in a lower Osteoarthritis Research Society International(OARSI)score,and reduced expression of matrix metalloproteinase 13(MMP13)in cartilage.Conclusion:SCU is effective in the therapeutic management of OA and could serve as a potential candidate for future clinical drug therapy for OA.
