The roughness of the contact surface exerts a vital role in rubbing.It is still a significant challenge to understand the microscopic contact of the rough surface at the atomic level.Herein,the rough surface with a special root mean square(RMS)value is constructed by multivariate Weierstrass–Mandelbrot(W–M)function and the rubbing process during that the chemical mechanical polishing(CMP)process of diamond is mimicked utilizing the reactive force field molecular dynamics(ReaxFF MD)simulation.It is found that the contact area A/A0 is positively related with the load,and the friction force F depends on the number of interfacial bridge bonds.Increasing the surface roughness will increase the friction force and friction coefficient.The model with low roughness and high lubrication has less friction force,and the presence of polishing liquid molecules can decrease the friction force and friction coefficient.The RMS value and the degree of damage show a functional relationship with the applied load and lubrication,i.e.,the RMS value decreases more under larger load and higher lubrication,and the diamond substrate occurs severer damage under larger load and lower lubrication.This work will generate fresh insight into the understanding of the microscopic contact of the rough surface at the atomic level.

Tuberculosis(TB)is an infectious disease caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis.Although the diagnostic technology of pulmonary tuberculosis(PTB)has advanced,accurate and differential diagnoses of PTB are still challenging.In recent years,the rapid development of artificial intelligence(AI)and its wide application in the medical field have provided new opportunities for diagnosing and treating TB and PTB.The machine learning model of AI has not only helped physicians improve diagnostic accuracy,but also enabled them to make early preventive diagnoses for individuals at increased risk of infection.Furthermore,AI can guide physicians to formulate targeted treatment strategies for PTB patients with different conditions.

Dear Editor,In the era of big data and artificial intelligence,"smart breeding"has become a broad conceptual framework encompassing the paradigm shift of crop breeding to relying on analysis of high-throughput population genetics and phenomics data to conduct genomic selection,allowing identification and optimal use of the genetic potential in crop species(Xiao et al.,2022;Xu et al.,2022;Wang et al.,2023).Most existing tools for analyzing high-throughput breeding data require extensive computational power,complex installation processes,and command-line expertise and are therefore challenging and inconvenient for the majority of researchers and breeders(Brandies and Hogg,2021).

Objective: To determine whether monotropein has an anticancer effect and explore its potential mechanisms against colorectal cancer(CRC) through network pharmacology and molecular docking combined with experimental verification. Methods: Network pharmacology and molecular docking were used to predict potential targets of monotropein against CRC. Cell counting kit assay, plate monoclonal assay and microscopic observation were used to investigate the antiproliferative effects of monotropein on CRC cells HCT116, HT29 and LoVo. Flow cytometry and scratch assay were used to analyze apoptosis and cell cycle, as well as cell migration, respectively in HCT116, HT29, and LoVo cells. Western blotting was used to detect the expression of proteins related to apoptosis, cell cycle, and cell migration, and the expression of proteins key to the Akt pathway. Results: The Gene Ontology and Reactome enrichment analyses indicated that the anticancer potential of monotropein against CRC might be involved in multiple cancer-related signaling pathways. Among these pathways, RAC-beta serine/threonine-protein kinase(Akt1, Akt2), cyclin-dependent kinase 6(CDK6), matrix metalloproteinase-9(MMP9), epidermal growth factor receptor(EGFR), cell division control protein 42 homolog(CDC42) were shown as the potential anticancer targets of monotropein against CRC. Molecular docking suggested that monotropein may interact with the 6 targets(Akt1, Akt2, CDK6, MMP9, EGFR, CDC42). Subsequently, cell activity of HCT116, HT29 and LoVo cell lines were significantly suppressed by monotropein(P<0.05). Furthermore, our research revealed that monotropein induced cell apoptosis by inhibiting Bcl-2 and increasing Bax, induced G_1–S cycle arrest in colorectal cancer by decreasing the expressions of CyclinD1, CDK4 and CDK6, inhibited cell migration by suppressing the expressions of CDC42 and MMP9(P<0.05), and might play an anticancer role through Akt signaling pathway. Permafrost degradation caused by climate warming is posing a serious threat to the stability of cast-in-place pile foundations in warm permafrost regions.Ambient cold energy can be effectively utilized by two-phase closed thermosyphons(TPCTs)to cool the permafrost.Therefore,we installed TPCTs in a cast-in-place pile foundation to create a unique structure called a thermal pile,which effectively utilizes the TPCTs to regulate ground temperature.And we conducted a case study and numerical simulation to exhibit the cooling performance,and optimize the structure of the thermal pile.The purpose of this study is to promote the application of thermal piles in unstable permafrost regions.Based on the findings,the thermal pile operated for approximately 53%of the entire year and effectively reduced the deep ground temperature at a rate of at least-0.1℃per year.Additionally,it successfully raised the permafrost table that is 0.35 m shallower than the natural ground level.These characteristics prove highly beneficial in mitigating the adverse effects of permafrost degradation and enhancing infrastructure safety.Expanding the length of the condenser section and the diameter of the TPCT in a suitable manner can effectively enhance the cooling capability of the thermal pile and ensure the long-term mechanical stability of the pile foundation even under climate warming.

In the past ten years,research on face recognition has shifted to using 3D facial surfaces,as 3D geometric information provides more discriminative features.This comprehensive survey reviews 3D face recognition techniques developed in the past decade,both conventional methods and deep learning methods.These methods are evaluated with detailed descriptions of selected representative works.Their advantages and disadvantages are summarized in terms of accuracy,complexity,and robustness to facial variations(expression,pose,occlusion,etc.).A review of 3D face databases is also provided,and a discussion of future research challenges and directions of the topic.

Assessment of cheese sign and its association with vascular risk factors: Data from PUMCH dementia cohort

Background: In the clinic, practitioners encounter many patients with an abnormal pattern of dense punctate magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) signal in the basal ganglia, a phenomenon known as "cheese sign". This sign is reported as common in cerebrovascular diseases, dementia, and old age. Recently, cheese sign has been speculated to consist of dense perivascular space (PVS). This study aimed to assess the lesion types of cheese sign and analyze the correlation between this sign and vascular disease risk factors.Methods: A total of 812 patients from Peking Union Medical College Hospital (PUMCH) dementia cohort were enrolled. We analyzed the relationship between cheese sign and vascular risk. For assessing cheese sign and defining its degree, the abnormal punctate signals were classified into basal ganglia hyperintensity (BGH), PVS, lacunae/infarctions and microbleeds, and counted separately. Each type of lesion was rated on a four-level scale, and then the sum was calculated; this total was defined as the cheese sign score. Fazekas and Age-Related White Matter Changes (ARWMC) scores were used to evaluate the paraventricular, deep, and subcortical gray/white matter hyperintensities.Results: A total of 118 patients (14.5%) in this dementia cohort were found to have cheese sign. Age (odds ratio [OR]: 1.090, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.064-1.120,P <0.001), hypertension (OR: 1.828, 95% CI: 1.123-2.983,P = 0.014), and stroke (OR: 1.901, 95% CI: 1.092-3.259,P = 0.025) were risk factors for cheese sign. There was no significant relationship between diabetes, hyperlipidemia, and cheese sign. The main components of cheese sign were BGH, PVS, and lacunae/infarction. The proportion of PVS increased with cheese sign severity.Conclusions: The risk factors for cheese sign were hypertension, age, and stroke. Cheese sign consists of BGH, PVS, and lacunae/infarction.

In actual physiological environments,bacteria can activate the immune system and release lactic acid.However,the detailed contribution of lactic acid to the passivation behavior of titanium(Ti)alloys is still unclear.The current work investigated the in vitro passivation behavior of Ti-6Al-4V(TC4)alloys fabricated by laser powder bed fusion in Hank's solution with and without adding lactic acid.Electrochemical methods,inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometer,and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy were jointly used.Adding lactic acid decreases the corrosion resistance of samples by degrading the formed passive film.The film formed in the(lactic acid)-containing solution exhibits a higher level of oxygen vacancies and a lower thickness,attributed to the suppressed formation of Ti^(4+)transformed from Ti^(3+)and Ti^(2+).Moreover,the presence of lactic acid would increase the open circuit potential,relieve the ions release,and hinder the deposition of calcium phosphates within 24 h immersion.

PF-YOLOv4-Tiny: Towards Infrared Target Detection on Embedded Platform

Infrared target detection models are more required than ever before to be deployed on embedded platforms,which requires models with less memory consumption and better real-time performance while considering accuracy.To address the above challenges,we propose a modified You Only Look Once(YOLO)algorithm PF-YOLOv4-Tiny.The algorithm incorpo-rates spatial pyramidal pooling(SPP)and squeeze-and-excitation(SE)visual attention modules to enhance the target localization capability.The PANet-based-feature pyramid networks(P-FPN)are proposed to transfer semantic information and location information simultaneously to ameliorate detection accuracy.To lighten the network,the standard convolutions other than the backbone network are replaced with depthwise separable convolutions.In post-processing the images,the soft-non-maximum suppression(soft-NMS)algorithm is employed to subside the missed and false detection problems caused by the occlusion between targets.The accuracy of our model can finally reach 61.75%,while the total Params is only 9.3 M and GFLOPs is 11.At the same time,the inference speed reaches 87 FPS on NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650 Ti,which can meet the requirements of the infrared target detection algorithm for the embedded deployments.

Transformation and mechanisms of climate wet/dry change on the northern Tibetan Plateau under global warming:A perspective from paleoclimatology

The northern Tibetan Plateau is a climatically sensitive zone influenced by monsoon and westerly winds.In summer,water vapor transport can reach Qinghai Lake and the eastern section of the Qilian Mountains;in winter,westerly winds mainly control the climate.This article compares the wet/dry changes in the region during the mid-Holocene(MH)warm period,the medieval climate anomaly(MCA),the current warm period(CWP),and the future warm period from the perspective of paleoclimate.We found that the MH warm period was mainly affected by the orbit-controlled East Asian summer monsoon,and the region showed warm and humid climate characteristics.The MCA was mainly controlled by solar radiation,and there was a warm and dry phenomenon.The CWP and the future warm period are mainly controlled by the rise in temperature caused by the increase in greenhouse gases,and the climate is becoming more arid.The wet/dry patterns in the CWP and the future warm period in the next century on the northern Tibetan Plateau are similar to those in the MCA.Continued warming will lead to the expansion of the westerly belt and a gradually humid climate.The future wet/dry changes will be more similar to the MH warm period.
