Pakistan is highly exposed to climate-induced disasters, especially floods. Flooding history shows that educational establishments have been disproportionately hard-hit by flooding events. In Pakistan, school safety and preparedness is still a choice, rather than a mandatory requirement for all schools. But schools in Pakistan do have a responsibility to keep safe the students in their care,especially during and after the catastrophic events. This implies the need to maintain the environment in and around school property, so as to minimize the impacts of floods and to have the mechanisms in place to maximize a school's resilience. This study examined the emergency preparedness activities of 20 schools in four districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province that had recently been severely affected by floods. Through face to face interviews and a structured questionnaire(n = 100) we collected data on the four pillars of emergency preparedness:emergency planning, preparation measures, safe school facilities, and hazard education and training. The study revealed that the majority of the sample schools hadexperienced more than one natural hazard-induced disaster,predominantly flooding, yet despite this had not undertaken adequate emergency preparedness activities. There are particular gaps with regard to plans for students with disabilities, the continuity of school operations after a disaster,the presence of maps to identify evacuation routes, the availability of emergency equipment and resources, disaster preparedness guidelines, and psychological first aid and crisis counseling. The strengths, weaknesses, opportunities,and threats analysis that our researchers carried out indicates that, although schools in the survey have taken many steps towards flood preparedness, many weaknesses still exist and there remain significant opportunities to strengthen the preparedness level of many schools. Phytochemical investigations of the ethanolic extract of leaves of Clutia lanceolata(Family:Euphorbiaceae)resulted in the isolation of four compounds viz.3,4-dihydroxy-2-methylbenzoic acid(1),2,20-dihydroxy-1,10-binaphthyl(2),1,3,8-trihydroxy-6-methylanthracene-9,10-dione(3)and 5-hydroxy-1,7-bis(4-hydroxy-3-methoxyphenyl)hepta-1,4,6-trien-3-one(4).Although all the isolated compounds were known but this was the first report from this plant *** structures were established on the basis of chemical and physical evidences *** analysis,FT-IR,1 H-NMR,13CNMR and mass spectral *** of compound 2 and 4 was further authenticated by single-crystal X-ray analysis and density functional theory *** isolated compounds(1–4)were screened for AChE enzyme inhibition assay in which compound 3 and 4 were found to be more potent AChE *** docking study of potent AChE inhibitor was performed to find the probable binding mode of the compounds into the active site of ***,the isolated compounds were also screened for in vivo cytotoxicity by brine shrimp lethality assay.

Indigofera heterantha commonly called indigo bush is a member of leguminoseae family found in the Himalayan region of Kashmir. A lectin has been isolated from the seeds of Indigofera heterantha by the purification procedure involving anion exchange chromatography on DEAE-cellulose followed by gel filtration chromatography on Sephadex G 100. Molecular characterization of the lectin was done by gel filtration and SDS-PAGE. Activity of the lectin was checked by hemagglutination assay and the sugar specificity by sugar inhibition tests. The antimicrobial activity of the purified lectin was carried out by Agar disc diffusion using appropriate standards. On the ion exchange column, the bound protein when eluted with 0-0.5 M NaCl gradient emerged as three peaks—peak I, peak II and peak III out of which only peak II showed the hemagglutinating activity. The lectin further resolved into two peaks G1 and G2 on gel filtration, with the lectin activity residing in G1, corresponding to a molecular weight of 70 KDa. The purified lectin named as Indigofera heterantha Lectin (IHL) produced a single band on SDS PAGE (18 KDa), revealing the tetrameric nature of the lectin. It agglutinated human erythrocytes (A, B, AB, and O). Hemagglutination was inhibited by D-galactose, Dmannose and D-arabinose. The lectin is reasonably thermostable showing full activity within a temperature range of 30°C to 90°C. pH stability of the lectin falls in the range of 2-9. IHL demonstrated a remarkable antibacterial activity against the pathogenic bacteria Klebsiella pneumoniae, Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, and Bacillus subtilis. IHL also inhibited the growth of phytopathogenic fungi Aspergillus niger, Aspergillus oryzae and Fusarium oxysporum.
