Assessment of Heavy Metals Immobilization in Artificially Contaminated Soils Using Some Local Amendments

Three alluvial soil samples with different textures were artificially polluted with chloride solutions of Cd, Pb, Co and chromate solution for Cr. The aqua-regia extracted concentration ranges in the artificially polluted soils were 1134 - 1489 mg·kg-1 for Pb, 854 - 938 mg·kg-1 for Cr, 166 - 346 mg·kg-1 for Co and 44 - 54 mg·kg-1 for Cd. The aqua-regia extracted metals were the highest in the spiked clay soil due to its high adsorption capacity. Rock phosphate (PR), lime-stone (LS) and Portland-cement (Cem) were mixed with the spiked soils at 1% and 2% rates (w/w) and incubated at 30 C for 2, 7, 14, 30, 60, 150 and 360 days. The extracted DTPA metals significantly decreased with different magnitudes with increasing the incubation period accompanied by increases in both pH and EC. The data showed that cement (Cem) treatment dropped the DTPA-Pb from @ 1000 to @ 400 mg·kg-1 in all the studied soils (60% decrease) in the first 2 months while it gradually decreased from 400 to 200 mg·kg-1 (20% decrease) in the next 10 months. Limestone (LS) and rock phosphate (PR) materials were relatively less effective in lowering DTPA-Pb after 12 months of incubation. The data showed also that cement (Cem) treatment was the most effective one in lowering DTPA-Cd by @ 60% as compared to the un-amended soils after 12 months of soil incubation. Extractable DTPA-Co and Cr showed consistent decreases with time down to nearly 50% of un-amended soils due to the effect of the added amendments after 12 months of incubation with superior reductions for the cement treatment in all the investigated soils. The statistical analysis confirmed that in all the studied metals and treatment, cement treatment (Cem) was significantly the most effective in lowering the DTPA extracted metals as indicated from LSD test. Background:Systemic sclerosis is characterized by the involvement of organs and the presence of specific *** objectives of this study were to identify the autoantibodies and to determine their association with the selected clinical features of the disease among Bangladeshi systemic sclerosis ***:This cross-sectional study was performed at the rheumatology outpatient clinic of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical *** against nine systemic sclerosis-specific antigens were tested using an enzyme-linked immunoassay immunoblot *** clinical features of patients with positive and negative autoantibody were examined by χ^(2) or Fisher's exact ***:A total of 71 patients with systemic sclerosis(66;93.0%female)were *** mean age at disease onset was 33.2 ***-seven(80.3%)patients had diffuse cutaneous *** of nine autoantibodies,four were positive,anti-topoisomerase-I(57.7%),anti-U1 ribonucleic protein(21.1%),anti-RNA polymerase Ⅲ(18.3%),and anticentromere antibodies(4.2%).Eleven(15.5%)patients were negative for any antibodies and 11 patients were positive for at least two ***-U3-RNP,anti-PMScl,anti-Ku,and anti-Th/To auto antibodies were absent in all ***-RNA polymerase III was associated with raised pulmonary arterial systolic pressure(PASP)and anti-U1-RNP with decreased forced vital capacity(FVC).Conclusions:Anti-topoisomerase-I was the commonest autoantibody in patients with systemic sclerosis in ***-RNA polymerase III antibody had significant association with raised PASP and anti-U1-RNP with decreased FVC.

Assessment of the Influence of Sulfuric Acid/Hydrogen Peroxide Mixture on Organic Sulfur Reduction of High Sulfur Coals and Their Chemical Composition

One of the contaminants in coal is sulphur. The adverse impact of sulfur on coal, such as environmental pollution, degradation of steel quality, and reduction of coal’s thermal value, has led to the attention of sulfur separation methods in recent decades. Leaching (chemical dissolution) is one of the best methods for desulfurising coal, reducing sulfur in coal. In this study, hydrogen peroxide as an oxidising agent on sulfuric acid yield in reducing sulfur types of coal and chemical structure and the organic texture of high sulfur coal was investigated. The experiments were designed using a three-level response surface methodology with four duplicate points and 27 experiments. The independent variables studied were temperature, time, stirring speed and ratio of sulfuric acid to hydrogen peroxide. Dependent variables included reduction percentage of total, pyritic and organic sulfur. This study showed that 99.99% of total sulfur, 30.11% of pyritic sulfur and 69.08% of organic sulfur were reduced. These values were obtained at a temperature of 60°C, time 120 min, stirring speed 200 rpm and 3:1 ratio of sulfuric acid to hydrogen peroxide. Significant changes were observed by infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) of the coal structure before and after desulphurisation. On the other hand, the studies showed no specific changes in the bonds related to the organic coal matrix. The results showed that this method could be used as a secure process for removing inorganic and organic sulfur without destroying the organic coal matrix.

BACKGROUND Coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19)is a global pandemic putting the population at a high risk of infection-related health hazards,mortality and a potential failure of proper medical ***,it is necessary to evaluate the potential use of the existing drugs that could be used as options for the medical management of COVID-19 *** To evaluate the role of the H_(2) receptor blocker“famotidine”in COVID-19 *** This study was done on seriously ill COVID-19 patients admitted to the intensive care unit(ICU)from different institutes in *** were divided into famotidine treatment group“A”(famotidine 40 mg to 60 mg oral formulation every 8 h with other treatment as given),and control group“B”(treatment as given).National early warning score(NEWS)-2,and sequential organ failure assessment day-1 score was calculated to evaluate the *** were evaluated by the time required for clinical improvement,characterized as duration required from enrollment to the achievement of NEWS-2 of≤2 maintained for 24 h;time to symptomatic recovery,defined as the duration in days(from randomization)required for the recovery of the COVID-19 symptoms;mortality rate;duration of ICU and hospital stay;total period of hospitalization;the rate of supplementary oxygen requirement;the computed tomography(CT)chest recovery(%),the time required for the viral clearance and“NEWS-2”on *** A total of 208 patients were enrolled in this study with 104 patients in each *** famotidine treatment group had comparatively better recovery of 75%and a low mortality of 25%than the control with a recovery of 70%and a mortality of 30%.Duration of clinical improvement(group A 9.53 d,group B 14.21 d);hospitalization period among the recovered patients(group A 13.04 d,group B 16.31 d),pulmonary improvement in chest CT(group A 21.7%,group B 13.2%),and the time for viral clearance(group A 20.7 d,group B 23.8 d)were found to be statistically si

Terpenoids are novel natural products isolated from mastic *** gum was obtained from the Pistacia Lentiscus *** investigations have documented medical and pharmacological properties of mastic gum such as memory enhancement,antifungal,and antibacterial *** was astonishing to study the possible interaction of mastic gum extract with microtubule proteins which are involved in memory and consciousness since the administration of mastic gum is evidenced in the improvement of brain *** a number of studies have demonstrated the effect of microtubule dynamics on mammals'memory,in this study,we investigated the effect of Oxygenated Sesquiterpenes(OST)on microtubule polymerization in *** was purified from the ethanolic extract of mastic *** results revealed that OST induces microtubule polymerization;however,microtubule depolymerization was not affected and fluorometric assays showed conformational changes of tubulin in the presence of *** interestingly found that colchicine was unable to inhibit MT assembly in the presence of OST and OST was solely more efficient than the combination of OST with paclitaxel for elevating microtubule polymerization *** hope that OST could be a promising agent for memory enhancement and the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases as a novel tubulin-binding compound.

A pot experiment was conducted to investigate the comparative effect of cow manure vermicompost and NPK fertilizers on the growth and flower production of Zinnia (Zinnia elegans). An air dried sandy loam soil was mixed with four rates of NPK fertilizer equivalent to 0 (control), 0.5 dose (N-P-K = 69-16-35 kg·haǃ), 1 dose (recommended) (N-P-K = 137-32-70 kg·haǃ), 2 doses (N-P-K = 274-64-140 kg·haǃ) and 4 doses (N-P-K = 548-128-280 kg·haǃ) and three rates of vermicompost equivalent to 5%, 10%, 20% by oven dry weight. Two plants were grown in each pot. After blooming of flowers, the plants were harvested at 50 days of growth and leaves and stems were separated. The growth parameters (shoot height, root length, leaf number, total number of flower, flower diameter, fresh and dry weight of flower) of Zinnia plant increased by the application of vermicompost and the effect of NPK fertilizer was not found effective. The growth performance was similar between 10% and 20% and hence 10% vermicompost should be taken into consideration when ornamental plants are grown in potting media.

A major advancement has recently occurred in the ability to predict protein secondary structure from sequence using artificialneural networks. This new accessibility to high-quality predicted structures provides a big opportunity for the protein designcommunity. It is particularly welcome for membrane protein design, where the scarcity of solved structures has been a majorlimitation of the field for decades. Here, we review the work done to date on the membrane protein design and set outestablished and emerging tools that can be used to most effectively exploit this new access to structures.
