Biological Evaluation of New Schiff Bases: Synthesized from 4-Amino-3,5-dimethyl-1,2,4-triazole, Phenathroline and Bipyridine Dicarboxaldehydes

Four new Schiff bases with promising anticancer activity have been synthesized from 4-amino-3,5-dimethyl-1,2,4-triazole and di-pyridyl-aldehydes. Structures have been established by various spectroscopic methods. The compounds were tested in vitro to study their cytotoxicity and anti-oxidative activity in human lung carcinoma (A549), breast carcinoma (BT549), prostate adenocarcinoma (PC3) and mouse preadipocytes (3T3-L1) cells. Compound 1 was found to increase Glutathione (GSH) level slightly in all four cell lines. Compound 4 showed better selectivity and cytotoxicity against both BT549 and A549 cells compared to the anticancer drug tamoxifen. With the exception of compound 4 which reduced GSH levels in A549 and BT549, all other compounds maintained GSH levels in comparison to their respective controls.

BACKGROUND Diarrhoea is a frequent symptom in children with cancer, and occurs due to a composite effect of underlying disease and immunosuppression consequent to therapy, malnutrition, and non-infective aetiologies such as mucositis. In a large proportion of cases, the aetiology of diarrhoea remains unknown but is often attributed to multiple pathogens including *** To identify and describe the pathogens causing diarrhoea in Bangladeshi children with *** Two cross-sectional pilot studies were conducted involving paediatric oncology patients with diarrhoea. Stool samples were collected from children who were hospitalised with or without being treated with chemotherapy during the study period, and had diarrhoea at any stage during their admission. In the first study,stool samples were tested by conventional microbiological methods and by polymerase chain reaction for parasites, and by immunoassays for Clostridium difficile. In the second study, conventional microbiology was conducted for bacteria and parasites including an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay for Cryptosporidium antigen, and in a subset, immunoassays for Clostridium *** In the first study Giardia lamblia was detected in 68.5% of samples, Entamoeba histolytica in 13%, Cryptosporidium in 5.6%, non-toxigenic C. difficile in 22.4%, and other bacteria in 5.2%. In the second study, E. histolytica was detected in 10% of samples, Cryptosporidium in 4.3%, G. lamblia in 1.4%, C. difficile in 5.1%, and other bacteria in 5.7% of *** These pilot data suggest that parasites are important aetiologies of diarrhoea in Bangladeshi children with malignancy. While molecular diagnostic tools detect an array of stool pathogens with greater sensitivity, conventional diagnostic methods are also useful.

BACKGROUND:Hepatitis B virus(HBV)is encountered sporadically the year round in *** results in a wide range of liver diseases,with asymptomatic acute hepatitis at one end to hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC)at the other end of the spectrum. METHODS:All 1018 individuals of different age groups and sex with varied religious,educational and social backgrounds were tested for HBsAg by *** positive samples were further tested by ELISA for *** testing,blood samples were preserved at-20℃.The study was conducted in a semi-urban location on the outskirts of Dhaka. RESULTS:Of the 1018 individuals,5.5%tested positive for *** were tested positive for *** the HBsAg-positive population,58.93%were HBeAg- positive and the rest 41.07%*** was a male predominance and those who were tested positive were mostly between 16 and 50 years of *** risk factors for exposure to HBV appeared to be injudicious use of injectable medications,treatment by unqualified, traditional practitioners,mass-vaccination against cholera and smallpox,barbers and body piercing. CONCLUSION:HBV remains a major cause of morbidity and mortality in Bangladesh and we have a long way to go before we may bid farewell to this deadly menace.

The present study deals with the analysis of heat transfer of the unsteady Maxwell nanofluid flow in a squeezed rotating channel of a porous extensile surface subject to the velocity and thermal slip effects incorporating the theory of heat flow intensity of Cattaneo-Christov model for the expression of the energy distribution in preference to the classical Fourier’s law. A set of transformations is occupied to renovate the current model in a system of nonlinear ordinary differential equations that are numerically decoded with the help of MATLAB integrated function bvp4c. The effects of various flow control parameters are investigated for the momentum, temperature and diffusion profiles, as well as for the wall shearing stress and the heat and mass transfer. The results are finally described from the material point of view. A comparison of heat flux models of Cattaneo-Christov and Fourier is also performed. An important result from the present work is that the squeezing parameter is strong enough in the middle of the channel to retard the fluid flow.

Viscous dissipation and radiative heat transfer in nanofluid with the influence of magnetic field over a rotating stretching surface has been investigated numerically. The steady laminar boundary layer flow is considered in this study. The governing boundary-layer equations are formulated and transformed into nonlinear ordinary coupled differential equations by using similarity variables. The governing equations are solved numerically using the Nactsheim-Swigert Shooting iteration technique together with the Runge-Kutta six order iteration schemes with the help of a computer programming language Compaq Visual Fortran 6.6a. The simulation results are presented graphically to illustrate influence of well-known parameters on the velocity, temperature and concentration distributions as well as skin-friction coefficient, Nusselt and Sherwood number at the sheet.

Four new Schiff bases of 1,10-phenanthroline-2,9-dicarboxaldehyde with sulfur-containing amines such as 2-mercaptoaniline, S-alkyl/aryl dithiocarbazates and thiosemicarbazide have been synthesized and characterized by spectroscopic and X-ray crystallographic techniques. A comparative study of the methods of synthesis has been made using both traditional and microwave techniques. A significant reduction in reaction time has been observed when the microwave method was used. In some of the reactions, the yields also increased significantly.

Optimum Conditions for Bioethanol Production from Potato of Bangladesh

Bangladesh produces a huge amount of potatoes every year. This research was carried out to find the optimum conditions for bioethanol production from potato of Bangladesh. From this study, optimum growth of yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae CCD) was observed at pH 6.0 and temperature 31°C. Addition of a small amount of alpha-amylase enzyme to potato solution was found to enhance the potato starch degradation and made the fermentation process quicker. This study observed that 1750 unit alpha-amylase is enough to degrade the starch in 15% of 500 ml potato starch solution. From fermentation time study, 6-day incubation time was found to be enough to complete the fermentation process and optimum production of bioethanol form potato starch. Suitable concentration of potato in fermentation process was determined using five different potato solutions (5%, 10%, 15%, 20% and 30%). A highest production of bioethanol was found in ?20% potato treatment. Therefore, 20% potato solution is recommended for high-scale production of bioethanol from potato starch.

Metal complex, bis[(2,2’)-dimethyl 2,2’-(1,10-phenanthrline-2,9-diyl)bis(methan-1-yl-1-ylidene)-bis(hydrazinecarrbo dithioate)copper(I)], was synthesized from the reaction of Schiff base, (2,2’)-dimethyl 2,2’-(1,10-phenanthroline-2,9-diyl)bis(methan-1-yl-1-ylidene)-bis(hydrazinecarbo dithioate) and CuCl2 at reflux condition in methanol. The copper centers of the complex appear to be reduced. This probably was facilitated by in situ oxidative formation of disulfide bond at the uncomplexed ligand moieties. Single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis reveals the distorted tetrahedral geometry around the copper centers. This compound crystallizes in the triclinic space group, P-1 with crystallographic parameters: a = 10.006(3) ?, b = 13.272(3) ?, c = 22.123(6) ?, α = 85.656(6)°, β = 81.656(6)°, γ = 73.097(5)°, μ = 1.223 mm-1 , V = 2779.5(13) ?3, Z = 2, Dc = 1.437 Mg/m3, T = 293 (2) K.

Membrane distillation(md.is a thermal-based separation technique with the potential to treat a wide range of water types for various applications and *** challenges remain however,which prevent it from becoming commercially widespread including moderate permeate flux,decline in separation performance over time due to pore wetting and high thermal energy ***,its attractive characteristics such as high rejection(ca.100%)of nonvolatile species,its ability to treat highly saline solutions under low operating pressures(typically atmospheric)as well as its ability to operate at low temperatures,enabling waste-heat integration,continue to drive research interests *** particular interest is the class of carbon-based nanomaterials which includes graphene and carbon nanotubes,whose wide range of properties have been exploited in an attempt to overcome the technical challenges that md.*** low dimensional materials exhibit properties such as high specific surface area,high strength,tuneable hydrophobicity,enhanced vapour transport,high thermal and electrical conductivity and *** use in md.has resulted in improved membrane performance characteristics like increased permeability and reduced fouling *** have also enabled novel membrane capabilities such as in-situ fouling detection and localised heat *** this review we provide a brief introduction to md.and describe key membrane characteristics and fabrication *** then give an account of the various uses of carbon nanomaterials for md.applications,focussing on polymeric membrane *** research directions based on the findings are also suggested.
