Phenolic compounds affect production of pyocyanin, swarming motility and biofilm formation of Pseudomonas aeruginosa

Objective: To investigate the effects of plant-derived phenolic compounds(i.e. caffeic acid, cinnamic acid, ferulic acid and vanillic acid) on the production of quorum sensing regulated virulence factors such as pyocyanin, biofilm formation and swarming motility of Pseudomonas aeruginosa(P. aeruginosa) ***: Fourteen clinical P. aeruginosa isolates obtained from urine samples and P. aeruginosa PA01 strain were included in the study. The antibacterial effects of phenolic compounds were screened by well diffusion assay. Pyocyanin and biofilm activity were measured from culture supernatants and the absorbance values were measured using a spectrophotometer. Swarming plates supplemented with phenolic acids were point inoculated with P. aeruginosa strains and the ability to swarm was determined by measuring the distance of swarming from the central inoculation ***: Tested phenolic compounds reduced the production of pyocyanin and biofilm formation without affecting growth compared to untreated cultures. Moreover, these compounds blocked about 50% of biofilm production and swarming motility in P. aeruginosa ***: We may suggest that if swarming and consecutive biofilm formation could be inhibited by the natural products as shown in our study, the bacteria could not attach to the surfaces and produce chronic infections. Antimicrobials and natural products could be combined and the dosage of antimicrobials could be reduced to overcome antimicrobial resistance and drug side effects.

This is a very rare toxic event, and there is insufficient data to describe prevention strategies. Increased awareness and reporting of cases will help to better explain the association between targeted therapy and the radiation recall phenomenon.

Background:To generate and validate a method to estimate axial length estimated(AL_(est))from spherical equivalent(SE)and corneal curvature[keratometry(K)],and to determine if this AL_(est)can replace actual axial length(AL_(act))for correcting transverse magnification error in optical coherence tomography angiography(OCTA)images using the Littmann-Bennett ***:Data from 1301 participants of the Raine Study Gen2-20 year follow-up were divided into two datasets to generate(n=650)and validate(n=651)a relationship between AL,SE,and *** developed formula was then applied to a separate dataset of 46 participants with AL,SE,and K measurements and OCTA images to estimate and compare the performance of AL_(est)against AL_(act)in correcting transverse magnification error in OCTA images when measuring the foveal avascular zone area(FAZA).Results:The formula for AL_(est)yielded the equation:AL_(est)=2.102K−0.4125SE+7.268,R^(2)=*** was good agreement between AL_(est)and AL_(act)for both study *** mean difference[standard deviation(SD)]between FAZA corrected with AL_(est)and AL_(act)was 0.002(0.015)mm^(2)with the 95%limits of agreement(LoA)of−0.027 to 0.031 mm^(2).In comparison,mean difference(SD)between FAZA uncorrected and corrected with AL_(act)was−0.005(0.030)mm^(2),with 95%LoA of−0.064 to 0.054 mm^(2).Conclusions:AL_(act)is more accurate than AL_(est)and hence should be used preferentially in magnification error correction in the clinical *** corrected with AL_(est)is comparable to FAZA corrected with AL_(act),while FAZA measurements using images corrected with AL_(est)have a greater accuracy than measurements on uncorrected ***,in the absence of AL_(act),clinicians should use AL_(est)to correct for magnification error as this provides for more accurate measurements of fundus parameters than uncorrected images.

Comparison of corneal endothelial changes following phacoemulsification with transversal and torsional phacoemulsification machines

AIM:To compare and evaluate the phacoemulsification parameters and postoperative endothelial cell changes of two different phacoemulsification machines, each with different modes, but also to assess the relationship between postoperative endothelial cell loss and the phacoemulsification parameters, as well as the other factors in both ***:This prospective observational study was comprised of consecutive eligible cataract patients operated with phacoemulsification technique performed by the same surgeon using either a WHITESTAR Signature Ellips FX(transversal, group 1) or Infiniti OZil IP(torsional, group 2) ***:The study included 86 patients. Baseline characteristics in the groups were similar. The median nuclear sclerosis grade was 3(2-4) in the first group and2(2-4) in the second group(P =0.265). Both groups had similar phacoemulsification needle times(group 1: 60.63±36 s; group 2: 55.98±30 s; P =0.789). The percentage of endothelial cell loss 30 d after surgery ranged from 3% to15% with a median of 7% in group 1, and from 2% to13% with a median of 6% in group 2; however, there was no statistically significant difference between the groups(P =0.407). Hexagonality(P =0.794) and the coefficient of variation(CV; P =0.142) did not differ significantly between the groups before and 30 d after surgery. Asignificant positive correlation was found between the endothelial cell loss and nuclear sclerosis grade(group1: P <0.001; group 2: P <0.001) and between the endothelial cell loss and average phacoemulsification power(group 1: P =0.007; group 2: P =0.008).CONCLUSION:Both of these machines were efficient,with similar endothelial cell loss. This endothelial cell loss was related to the increased nuclear sclerosis grade and increased phacoemulsification power.

The Synthesis of Arylsulfonylphthalimides and Their Reactions with Several Amines in Acetonitrile

In this study, several N-(p-substituted-arylsulfonyl)phthalimides (1a-e) were synthesized. The synthesized compounds were then examined with respect to their substitution reactions with t-butylamine, diethylamine, cyclohexylamine, and trans-1,2-diaminocyclohexane in acetonitrile. In order to determine the mechanism, substituent effect, activation entropy, and nucleophile effect were used as criteria.

Determining of Employee Frauds in Forensic Accounting： A Research on Forensic Cases in the City of Kars in Turkey

Discovering and preventing the frauds which affect the business organizations negatively require a greater degree of specialism. Detecting a fraud in the organizations is very hard, because not only such a fraud is exercised by the people who have deep professional knowledge, but they also use some peculiar methods to hide their tricky activities. Therefore, it is obvious that it is necessary to have the fraud examiners and especially fraud auditors who should have deep professional knowledge and experience. The aim of this study is to give some general information about employee fraud, which targets the different functions of the companies, takes many forms, and reaches important levels in recent years, in qualitative point. In this study, firstly, forensic accounting is a highly dynamic area in nowadays which is related to fraud auditing and its profession, and its search area of frauds and employee frauds subjects have been reviewed. Finally, qualitative data were collected about fraud incidents which had occurred and been sent to the court in the province of Kars in Turkey. Actual case analysis method has been used in this study. The obtained data have been analyzed by using Statistical Package for the Social Sciences （SPSS） 17 statistics package program. Results of the study have been discussed and interpreted in details.

Epidemic management in a measles outbreak in 2023,the return of vaccine-preventable diseases:A single center,retrospective observational study

Objective:To investigate the importance of immunization in preventing measles infection and to determine the most useful laboratory tests for confirmation of ***:This study included pediatric cases evaluated with a presumed diagnosis of measles between December 2022 and June 2023,at Marmara University Pendik Training and Research *** effects of vaccination status and underlying disease on the clinical course,treatments,and complications were ***:In total,117 patients were enrolled in the study with a median age of 80 months(IQR:32.5-125.0).Twelve patients with contact history were asymptomatic and had an underlying disorder,and intravenous immunoglobulin was given to them for post-exposure ***-one patients had confirmed measles *** treatment was given to three patients(a newborn,a girl with rhabdomyosarcoma,and a healthy boy)with respiratory ***-eight percent of confirmed measles cases were unvaccinated,and all hospitalized cases were unvaccinated or *** full-vaccinated children had confirmed measles *** PCR from nasopharyngeal swabs was negative in all of them,and their diagnosis was established with anti-measles IgM ***:The measles vaccine is the most effective way to protect from measles and measles-related *** measles can also occur in fully vaccinated patients,the disease is milder than in unvaccinated *** ELISA and RT-PCR tests together may be beneficial in patients with high clinical suspicion for early diagnosis.
