Epidemiological aspects of ocular superglue injuries

AIM： To report the frequency, associated risk factors and characteristics of cases referred to Farabi Eye Hospital with ocular superglue injuries. METHODS： In a descriptive cross-sectional study conducted between December 2012 and February 2013, patients with ocular superglue injuries were evaluated. Age, sex, educational level, location, time, mechanism, type, site and time of eye injury were gathered through interview using a customized questionnaire. All participants had given consent to undergo thorough eye examination. RESULTS： Over the course of three months, 105 patients with ocular superglue injuries enrolled in the study, including 56 （53.3%） men and 49 （46.7%） women with the mean age of 24.7±11.6 （range, 2 to 53）y. The right eye, left eye and both eyes were involved in 52%, 42% and 6% of the patients, respectively. Most of injuries had occurred at home （72.4%） and at night （55%）. More than half of patients （52.4%） did not take any primary aids following the ocular injury. Patient carelessness （78.1%）, childhood curiosity and lack of parental supervision （11.4%）, storing superglue in inappropriate places and inadvertently using superglue as eye drops due to poor vision （2.9%）, inadequate awareness of superglue applications [used to stick on artificial nails （3.8%）, artificial eyelashes （1.9%） and broken tooth （1%）] and being assaulted with glue （1%） were common risk factors. CONCLUSION： The frequency of ocular superglue injuries in patients referred to Farabi Eye Hospital is relatively high. This finding underlines the importance of public education and awareness about superglue injuries to the eye and taking protective measures and safety strategies in order to prevent these injures.

AIM： To investigate the prevalence and risk factors of gastroesophageal reflux disease （GERD） symptoms in Qashqai migrating nomads with a different life style in Fars province, southern Iran. METHODS： In summer 2006, 748 Qashqai migrating nomads aged 25 years or more were enrolled using a multiple-stage stratified cluster random sampling method. A questionnaire consisting of demographic characteristics, lifestyle and GERD symptoms （heartburn, regurgitation, chest pain, dysphagia, hoarseness and cough） as completed for each subject. RESULTS： The questionnaire was completed in 717 subjects. The prevalence rate of GERD, defined as reflux occurring at least one time per week in the preceding year, was 33% （237 subjects）. The prevalence was higher in older individuals （36.0% vs 28.9%, P 〈 0.05） and in those with other gastrointestinal complaints （51.0% vs 27.8%, P 〈 0.001）, but not different in obese and non-obese subjects. It was also higher in those consuming fruits and vegetables more than once a week （36.2% vs 17.3%, P 〈 0.001）. GERD had a positive correlation with smoking （42.1% vs 27.8%, P 〈 0.001）, but a negative relation with non-alcoholic beverages. The association between GERD and non-steroidal antiinflammatory drugs （NSAIDs） consumption was also significant （40.2% vs 25.4%, P 〈 0.001）. CONCLUSION： The prevalence of GERD （33%） is very high in Qashqai migrating nomads which may be due to a lower socioeconomic and educational level of these people and difference in the life style. Older age, frequent consumption of fruits and vegetables, smoking and NSAIDs are risk factors for GERD in this population.

Background: Oral mucositis(OM) is one of the most common complications of mucotoxic cancer *** induces clinically significant pain, increases the risk of infections and affects the patients’ quality of ***: This study investigated the effects of an herbal preparation from Plantago ovata hydrocolloid in the prevention and treatment of OM, in breast cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy with a regimen including ***, setting, participants, and interventions: This research was a double-blind, randomized, controlled crossover trial. The herbal compound consisted of a mixture of 500 mg of P. ovate husk in 30 m L water plus three drops of vinegar per dose, which was used as a mouthwash. Phytochemical and physicochemical tests of the compound were also performed. Twenty-eight patients who developed mucositis during the chemotherapy screening cycle were randomized to the herbal compound(n = 14) and placebo(n = 14) groups. They received herbal compound or placebo three times per day during their next chemotherapy cycle(cycle 1 of treatment). Patients were crossed over during cycle 2 of treatment and received the alternative therapy. An oral care protocol was prescribed to all patients in cycles 1 and 2 of the *** outcome measures: The patients were visited at baseline, the end of the first and second weeks of the screening cycle, and the end of the first and second weeks of each of two treatment cycles. The degree of mucositis was used as the main treatment outcome. The prediction of fatigue life of metallic alloys is justly accepted as one of the most important phenomena in the field of metallurgical and mechanical *** elevated temperatures,oxidation of the surfaces has an effective role in the fatigue strength and ductility of the *** the present work,the effect of prior cyclic oxidation on the high temperature low cycle fatigue(HTLCF)properties of nickel-based superalloy Rene®80 has been assessed in the uncoated state and in the Pt-aluminide(Pt-Al)coated condition at 930℃.To apply cyclic oxidation,simulation of engine thermal exposure was carried out by exposing coated and uncoated fatigue specimens in the burner rig(120 cycles at 1100℃).The cyclic oxidation procedure led to a changing in the coating microstructure from the dual-phase(ξ-PtAl_(2)+β-(Ni,Pt)Al)to single phase(β-(Ni,Pt)Al).Results of HTLCF tests showed an improvement in the HTLCF life around 11.5%in the unexposed coated specimen(pre-cyclic oxidation)as compared to unexposed bare specimen,while this rise for exposed coated specimen(post-cyclic oxidation)was only 5%.Although a mixed mode fracture morphology(ductile and brittle)was observed on the fracture surfaces of failed specimens,the wider regions of brittle fracture belonged to exposed coated/uncoated ones.

The expansive clays are extremely sensitive to the slight moisture alteration,exhibiting sequentially volume *** settlement of the buildings and infrastructures underlying expansive soil is a critical challenge that geotechnical engineers have to deal ***,the objective of this study is to assess the alteration in the compressibility behavior of expansive clay respecting partial replacement of cement by zeolite in cemented *** this purpose,7 and 28 d cured samples treated with 6%,8%,10%,and 12%cement addition and 0,10%,30%,50%,70%,and 90%cement replacement by zeolite were investigated through Atterberg limit and a series of one-dimensional consolidation tests to evaluate the consistency limits and compressibility *** liquid limits of the soil samples indicated a decremental trend as the cement content ***,the increase of zeolite replacement up to 30%in each specific cement content diminished liquid limit to its lowest *** increment of zeolite replacement increased the liquid limit of the soil-binder *** lowest plasticity index was also achieved at the 30%zeolite replacement percentage;hence,the lowest swelling potential would be resulted,concerning an indirect *** results of the consolidation experimentations disclosed that zeolite replacement had adverse influence on consolidation parameters of cemented samples such as compression index,swell index,coefficient of compressibility,coefficient of volume compressibility,and coefficient of consolidation after 7 d of curing whereas after 28 d of curing,the 30%zeolite-replaced samples represented the best consolidation ***,it can be stated that the addition of cement alongside the partial substitution of cement by zeolite can be a beneficial strategy for the geo-environmental targets of this study.

AIM:To assess the hepatic changes after induction of different periods of renal ischemia. METHODS:Rats were subjected to either sham operation or ischemia (30,45 and 60 min) followed by 60 min reperfusion. Liver and renal functional indices were measured. Hepatic glutathione (GSH) and ferric reducing antioxidant power levels and the concentration of interleukin (IL)-10 and tumor necrosis factor (TNF-α) were evaluated. Portions of liver and kidney tissues were fixed for histological evaluation. RESULTS:Forty-five minutes renal ischemia followed by 60 min reperfusion caused significant changes in liver structure and a significant reduction in renalfunction. These rats showed a significant decrease in liver GSH,as well as a significant increase in TNF-α and IL-10 concentrations. These results demonstrated that renal ischemia caused changes in liver histology,function,oxidative stress and inflammatory status,which led to a reduction in hepatic antioxidant capacity. With 30 min ischemia,the magnitude of these changes was less than those with 45 or 60 min ***:A minimum of 45 min ischemia is needed to study the effects of renal injury on the liver as a remote organ.

In this study,the effect of oral administration of chaste tree fruit(CTF)extract was evaluated on growth performance,hematological indices,serum biochemical parameters,and the expression of growth and appetite-related genes in goldfish(Carassius auratus).The fry(N=300;2.40±0.12 g)were randomly dispersed into 12 aquaria and fed with different levels of CTF extract(0(control),0.5%,1.0%,and 1.5%)for 56 *** the end of the trial,the highest body weight gain and the lowest feed conversion ratio were observed in the fish fed with 1.5%CTF extract(P0.05).The levels of aspartate transaminase and lactate dehydrogenase were decreased by increasing the supplementation levels of CTF extract and the lowest values were obtained in 1.5%CTF extract diet(P<0.05).The expression of growth hormone,insulin-like growth factor 1,and ghrelin genes was significantly up-regulated in the fish fed with 1.5%CTF extract compared to other treatments(P<0.05).Overall,the enrichment of goldfish diet with 1.5%CTF extract could interfere positively in the growth-related traits and hematological parameters.

Designing equipment for processing,sorting,sizing and other post-harvest operations of agricultural products requires information about their physical *** study was carried out to evaluate the effect of moisture content on some physical properties of barley *** levels of moisture content ranging from 7.34%to 21.58%(d.b.)were *** average length,width,thickness,arithmetic mean diameter,geometric mean diameter,thousand grain mass,sphericity,surface area and repose angle increased from 8.91 to 9.64 mm,3.30 to 3.74 mm,2.58 to 2.98 mm,4.93 to 5.45 mm,4.23 to 4.75 mm,44.48 to 51.30 g,47.55%to 49.35%,56.66 to 71.09 mm2 and 31.16°to 36.90°,respectively,as moisture content increased from 7.34%to 21.58%(d.b.).The bulk density,true density and porosity were found to decrease with increasing moisture *** static friction coefficient of the grains increased linearly against various surfaces(plywood,glass and galvanized iron sheet)as the moisture content *** all moisture content,the maximum friction was offered by plywood,followed by galvanized iron sheet and glass surface.

Iran is located in one of the seismically active regions of the world. Due to the high probability of earthquakes throughout the country and the potential for tsunami inundation along the coasts and offshore, comprehensive studies on theinteraction of these natural phenomena arc necessary, hi this study, the most conservative scenarios are determined for possible earthquakes within the Khark zone （Persian Gulf） *** on experimental relations between tile fault length, magnitude and displacement, which are paralneters for deter- mining tsunamigenic sources. Subsequently, the maximum height of tstmami waves are calculated based on the specitieations of the seismic source and its distance from the shore as well as the coastal slope. A zoning map of tsunami hazard is finally presented.
