Magnetic resonance imaging of the pancreas in streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats: Gadofluorine P and Gd-DOTA

AIM: To investigate the performance of Gadofluorine P-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging(MRI) on the diagnosis of diabetes in a streptozotocin(STZ)-induced diabetic rat ***: Fischer 344 rats were treated with *** not treated with STZ served as controls. T1-weighted MRI was performed using a 3T scanner before and after the injection of Gd-DOTA or Gadofluorine P(6 diabetic rats, 5 controls). The normalized signal intensity(SI) and the enhancement ratio(ER) of the pancreas were measured at each time point, and the values were compared between the normal and diabetic rats using the Mann-Whitney test. In addition,the values were correlated with the mean islet *** cut-off values were calculated using a positive test based on receiver operating *** Gd concentration after the injection of each contrast media was measured using laser ablation-inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry in a separate set of rats(4 diabetic rats, 4 controls for Gadofluorine P; 2, 2 for Gd-DOTA).RESULTS: The normalized SI and ER of the pancreas using Gd-DOTA were not significantly different between diabetic rats and controls. With Gadofluorine P, the values were significantly higher in the diabetic rats than in the control rats 30 min after injection(P < 0.05). The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve that differentiated diabetic rats from the control group was greater for Gadofluorine P than for Gd-DOTA(0.967 vs 0.667, P = 0.085). An increase in normalized SI 30 min after Gadofluorine P was correlated with a decrease in the mean number of islets(r 2 = 0.510, P = 0.014). Intra-pancreatic Gd was higher in rats with Gadofluorine P injection than Gd-DOTA injection(Gadofluorine P vs Gd-DOTA, 7.37 vs 0.00, P < 0.01). Benefit of neoadjuvant concurrent chemoradiotherapy for locally advanced perihilar cholangiocarcinoma

To clarify the role of neoadjuvant concurrent chemoradiotherapy (NACCRT) followed by surgical resection for localized or locally advanced perihilar cholangiocarcinoma (CCA).METHODSWe retrospectively reviewed 57 patients who underwent surgical resection with or without NACCRT for perihilar CCA; 12 patients received NACCRT and 45 patients did not received NACCRT. Patients with locally advanced perihilar CCA requiring NACCRT were defined as follows: (1) a mass involving unilateral branches of the portal vein or hepatic artery with insufficient volume of the anticipated remnant lobe; or (2) an infiltrating mass in the main portal vein that was too long for reconstruction, identified at preoperative *** median disease-free survival (DFS) durations of the neoadjuvant and non-neoadjuvant CCRT groups were 26.0 and 15.1 mo, respectively (P = 0.91). The median overall survival (OS) durations of the neoadjuvant and non-neoadjuvant CCRT groups were 32.9 and 27.1 mo, respectively (P = 0.26). The NACCRT group showed a downstaging tendency compared to the non-NACCRT group as compared with the tumor stage confirmed by histological examination after surgery and the tumor stage confirmed by imaging test at the time of diagnosis (P = 0.01).CONCLUSIONNACCRT does not prolong DFS and OS in localized or locally advanced perihilar CCA. However, NACCRT may allow tumor downstaging and improve tumor resectability.

Herein,incremental capacity-differential voltage (IC-DV) at a high C-rate (HC) is used as a non-invasive diagnostic tool in lithium-ion batteries,which inevitably exhibit capacity fading caused by multiple mechanisms during charge/discharge *** battery degradation modes are complex,the simple output of capacity fading does not yield any useful data in that *** IC and DV curves obtained under restricted conditions (<0.1C,25℃) were applied in non-invasive analysis for accurate observation of degradation symptoms,a facile,rapid diagnostic approach without intricate,complex calculations is critical in on-board ***,Li Ni_(0.5)Mn_(0.3)Co_(0.2)O_(2)(NMC532)/graphite pouch cells were cycled at 4 and 6C and the degradation characteristics,i.e.,loss of active materials (LAM) and loss of lithium inventory (LLI),were parameterized using the IC-DV *** the incremental current cycling,the initial steep LAM and LLI slopes underwent gradual transitions to gentle states and revealed the gap between low-and high-current measurements.A quantitative comparison of LAM at high and low C-rate showed that a IC;revealed the relative amount of available reaction region limited by cell ***,this did not provide a direct relationship for estimating the LAM at a low ***,the limiting LLI,which is calculated at a C-rate approaching 0,was obtained by extrapolating the LLI through more than two points measured at high C-rate,and therefore,the LLI at 0.1C was accurately determined using rapid cycling.

Strong enhancement of magnetic order from bulk to stretched monolayer FeSe as Hund’s metals

Despite of the importance of magnetism in possible relation to other key properties in iron-based superconductors,its understanding is still far from complete especially for FeSe *** one hand,the origin of the absence of magnetic orders in bulk FeSe is yet to be *** the other hand,it is still not clear how close monolayer FeSe on SrTiO_(3),with the highest transition temperature among iron-based superconductors,is to a magnetic *** we investigate magnetic properties of bulk and monolayer FeSe using dynamical mean-field theory combined with density-functional *** find that suppressed magnetic order in bulk FeSe is associated with the reduction of interorbital charge fluctuations,an effect of Hund’s coupling,enhanced by a larger crystal-field ***,spatial isolation of Fe atoms in expanded monolayer FeSe leads into a strong magnetic order,which is completely destroyed by a small electron *** work provides a comprehensive understanding of the magnetic order in iron-based superconductors and other general multi-orbital correlated systems as Hund’s metals.

Experimental Study of the Fry-Drying Phenomena of Organic Wastes in Hot Oil for Waste-Derived Solid Fuel

In sludge treatment, drying sludge using typical technology with high water content to a water content of approximately 10% is always difficult because of adhesive characteristics of sludge in drying. Many methods have been applied, including direct and indirect heat drying, but these approaches of reducing water content to below 40% after drying are very inefficient in energy utilization of drying sludge. In this study, fry-drying technology with a high heat transfer coefficient of approximately 500 W/m2·°C was used to dry swine excreta, sewage and industrial sludge. Also waste oil was used in the fry-drying process, and because the oil’s boiling point is between 240°C and 340°C and the specific heat is approximately 60% of that of water. In the fry-drying system, the sludge is input by molding it into a designated form after heating the waste oil at temperatures between 130°C and 150°C. At these temperatures, the heated oil rapidly evaporates the water contained in the sludge, leaving the oil itself. After approximately 8 - 10 min, the water content of the sludge was less than 10%, and its heating value surpassed 20,000 kJ/kg. Indeed, this makes the organic sludge appropriate for use as a solid fuel. The dried swine excreta, sewage and industrial sludge can be used in an incinerator like low-rank coal or solid fuel.

Bird-mimetic Wing System of Flapping-wing Micro Air Vehicle with Autonomous Flight Control Capability

A micro air vehicle with a bird-mimetic up-down and twisting wing drive system was developed in this study. The Flap- ping-wing Micro Air Vehicle （FMAV）, with a 50 cm wingspan and a double-crank drive system, performed successful flights of up to 23 min. The performance and capabilities of the FMAV were enhanced by adapting a number of unique features, such as a bird-mimetic wing shape with a span-wise camber and an up-down and twisting wing drive mechanism with double-crank linkages, This lift-enhancing design by mimicking the flapping mechanism of a bird＇s wing enabled the 210 g FMAV to fly autonomously in an outdoor field under wind speeds of less than 5 m.s-1. Autonomous flight was enabled by installing a flight control computer with a micro-electro-mechanical gyroscope and accelerometers, along with a micro video camera and an ultralight wireless communication system inside the fuselage. A comprehensive wind tunnel test shows that the FMAV with a high-camber wing and double-crank mechanism generates more lift and less net thrust than the FMAV with a flat wing and single-crank mechanism, which confirms the improved performance of the developed FMAV, as well as the superior slow flying or hovering capabilities of the FMAV with a high-camber wing and double-crank wing drive system.

MRI of magnetically labeled mesenchymal stem cells in hepatic failure model

AIM:To track intravascularly transplanted mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) labeled with superparamagnetic iron oxide (SPIO) by using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in an experimental rabbit model of hepatic ***:Human MSCs labeled with FDA-approved SPIO particles (Feridex) were transplanted via the mes-enteric vein into rabbits (n=16) with carbon tetrachloride-induced hepatic *** resonance (MR) examinations were performed with a 3.0 T clinical scanner immediately before and 2 h and 1,3,and 7 d after *** intensity (SI) changes on T2weighted MRI were measured,and correlation between MR findings and histomorphologic findings was also ***:SI on T2-weighted MRI decreased significantly in the liver 2 h after injection of human MSCs and returned gradually to the levels found before injection in 7 *** in SI in the liver at 2 h,1,3,and 7 d were 41.87% ± 9.63%,10.42% ± 4.3%,5.12% ± 1.9%,3.75% ± 1.2%,respectively (P < 0.001).Histologic analyses confirmed the presence of MSCs in the liver,localized mainly in the sinusoids in early period (2 h and 1 d) and concentrated to the border zone in late period (3 and 7 d).The number of iron-positive cells in the liver at 2 h and on 1,3 and 7 d after transplantation was 29.2 ± 4.8,10.1 ± 3.7,6.7 ± 2.2,and 5.8 ± 2.1,respectively (P=0.013).CONCLUSION:Intravascularly injected SPIO-labeled MSCs in an experimental rabbit model of hepatic failure can be detected and followed with MRI.

Universally composable one-time signature and broadcast authentication

Broadcast authentication is a vital security primitive for the management of a copious number of parties. In the universally composable framework, this paper investigates broadcast authentication using one-time signature based on the fact that one-time signature has efficient signature generation and verification suitable for low-power devices, and gives immediate authentication, which is a favorable property for time-critical messages. This paper first formulates a broadcast authentication model with the ideal functionalities such as one-time signature and broadcast authentication, and proposes a broadcast authentication scheme in the hybrid model. This paper then improves HORS, which is secure based on a strong assumption (i.e., a subset-resilient hash function) and presents the improved version as HORS+, which diffiers from HORS such that it is a secure one-time signature based on weaker assumptions, i.e. one-way functions, one-way hash functions and collisionresistant hash functions. At the same time, a protocol OWC using one-way chains is proposed to provide more registered keys for multi-message broadcast authentication. Our broadcast authentication scheme constructed by the combined use of HORS+ and OWC is universally composable secure and suitable for low-power devices.

Provably Secure Identity-based Group Key Exchange Protocol
