AIM: Taraxacum officinale (TO) has been frequently used as a remedy for inflammatory diseases. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of TO on cholecystokinin (CCK)-octapeptide-induced acute pancreatitis in ***: TO at 10 mg/kg was orally administered, followed by 75 μg/kg CCK octapeptide injected subcutaneously three times after 1, 3 and 5 h. This whole procedure was repeated for 5 d. We determined the pancreatic weight/body weight ratio, the levels of pancreatic HSP60 and HSP72, and the secretion of pro-inflammatory cytokines. Repeated CCK octapeptide treatment resulted in typical laboratory and morphological changes of experimentally-induced ***: TO significantly decreased the pancreatic weight/body weight ratio in CCK octapeptide-induced acute pancreatitis. TO also increased the pancreatic levels of HSP60 and HSP72. Additionally, the secretion of IL-6 and TNF-α decreased in the animals treated with ***: TO may have a protective effect against CCK octapeptide-induced acute pancreatitis.

AIM： To investigate the effect of selective Cyclooxygenase-2 （COX-2） inhibitor 4-[5-（4-Chloro-phenyl）-3- （trifluoromethyl）- 1H-pyrazol- 1-yl] benzenesulfonamide （SC-236）, on the cholecystokinin （CCK）-octapeptideinduced acute pancreatitis （AP） in rats. METHODS： Wistar rat weighing 240 g to 260 g were divided into three groups. （1） Normal DMSO treated group, （2） SC-236 at 4 mg/kg treated group; SC-236 systemically administered via the intravenous （i.v.） catheter, followed by 75 μg/kg CCK octapeptide subcutaneously three times, after 1, 3 and 5 h. This whole procedure was repeated for 5 d. （3） Dimethyl sulfoxide （DMSO） treated group： an identical protocol was used in this group as in the SC-236 cohort （see 2. above）. Repeated CCK octapeptide treatment resulted in a typical experimentally induced pancreatitis in the Wistar rats. RESULTS： SC-236 improved the severity of CCK- octapeptide-induced AP as measured by laboratory criteria [the pancreatic weight/body weight （p.w/ b.w） ratio, the level of serum amylase and lipase]. The SC-236 treated group showed minimal histologic evidence of pancreatitis and a significant reduction in myeloperoxidase activity. SC-236 also increased heat shock protein （HSP）-60 and HSP72 compared with the DMSO-treated group in the CCK-octapeptide-induced AP and also reduced the pancreatic levels of COX-2. Furthermore, SC-236 reduced proinflammatory cytokine synthesis and inhibited NF-KB activation compared with the DMSO-treated group in the CCK-octapeptide-induced AP. CONCLUSION： Our results suggested that COX-2 plays pivotal role in the development of AP and COX-2 inhibitors may play a beneficial role in preventing AP.

AIM： To investigate the effect of Patrinia scabiosaefolia （PS） on the cholecystokinin （CCK） octapeptide-induced acute pancreatitis （AP） in rats.METHODS： Wistar rats weighing 240-260 g were divided into three groups：（1） Normal saline-treated group; （2） treatment with PS at 100 mg/kg group, in which PS was administered orally, followed by subcutaneous administration of 75μg/kg CCK octapeptide three times after 1, 3 and 5 h, and this whole procedure was repeated for 5 d; （3） treatment with saline group, in which the protocols were the same as in treatment group with PS. We determined the pancreatic weight/ body weight ratio, the levels of pancreatic HSP60, HSP72 and the secretion of pro-inflammatory cytokines. Repeated CCK octapeptide treatment resulted in the typical laboratory findings of experimentally induced pancreatitis.RESULTS： PS reduced the pancreatic weight/body weight ratio, the levels of serum amylase and lipase, and inhibited expressions of pro-inflammatory cytokines in the CCK octapeptide-induced AP. Furthermore, PS pretreatment increased the pancreatic levels of HSP60 and HSP72.CONCLUSION： Pretreatment with PS has an antiiinflammatory effect on CCK octapeptide-induced AP.

Improvement in the Adhesion Between Electrode of a SOFC and Ag Paste as a Current Collector by Au Deposition

This paper reports the use of Au films to improve the performance of the stacked solid oxide fuel cell(SOFC) based on the characterization of the interface and the adhesion between the electrodes of the SOFCs and the Ag paste. The specimens were manufactured to perform the experiment as follows. A Si O2 wafer with a 300 mm notch was attached to the electrodes of a SOFC by a Ag paste and Au film, which were deposited on the electrodes by sputtering for 1 min or 5 min deposition time and annealed at300 C for 1 h. The four-point bending test was performed, which resulted in the formation of an extended crack at the tip on the wafer notch, and the crack propagation was observed using a stereo microscope equipped with a charge-coupled device(CCD). Consequently, the interfacial adhesion energy and the effect of the Au film between the each electrode and the Ag paste can be evaluated. On the cathode, the interfacial adhesion energy without Au film was 2.59 J/m2(upper value) and the adhesion energy increased to 11.59 J/m2(upper value) and 15.89 J/m2(lower value) with the Au film. On the anode,the interfacial adhesion energy without Au film was 1.74 J/m2(upper value), which increased to 11.07 J/m2(upper value) and 14.74 J/m2(lower value) with the Au film. In addition, the interface areas were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy(SEM) and energy dispersive spectroscopy(EDS) to estimate the interface delamination.

Peri-infarct reorganization has been reported in stroke patients with a lesion at the cerebral cortex, corona radiata, or pons, separately. However, there have been no reports describing the patients with peri-infarct reorganization at multiple levels. The present study reported a patient with a middle cerebral artery infarct who showed complete paralysis of the right extremities at stroke onset. Results showed that at 3 years after stroke onset, patient＇s motor function of the affected hand appeared to have been recovered by the motor tract, which reorganized into the anterior areas of the infarcted centrum semiovale and corona radiata, as demonstrated by diffusion tensor tractography study analyzed using functional MRI activation results. This result indicates that the human brain can show extensive brain plasticity and that saving the adjacent area or penumbra around the infarct even though the lesion from multiple levels is important for functional recovery after stroke.

In this study,the uninjured periventricular area of a female patient who presented with complete paralysis of the left extremities following middle cerebral artery infarction was analyzed using diffusion tensor tractography,transcranial magnetic stimulation,and functional magnetic resonance *** tensor tractography revealed interrupted corticospinal tract at the infarct lesion in the corona radiata at 2 weeks after onset,which descended through the spared periventricular area at 6 months after *** magnetic stimulation and functional magnetic resonance imaging revealed a motor pathway of the affected hand that was compatible with the lateral corticospinal *** 6 months after onset,motor function in the affected extremities recovered to normal levels,which suggested that motor function in the affected hand recovered by the corticospinal tract that passed through the spared periventricular *** arterial territory of the spared periventricular area corresponded with the anterior choroidal *** results suggest that care should be taken in spared periventricular areas in patients with lesions at the corona radiata level.

The aberrant pyramidal tract refers to the collateral pathway of the pyramidal tract through the medial lemniscus in the brainstem. A 63-year-old male patient presented with severe paralysis of the left extremities due to a right corona radiata infarct. He was able to extend the affected fingers against resistance at 2 months after stroke onset. At 6 months after stroke onset, he was able to perform some fine motor activities, as well as to walk with a nearly normal gait. Functional MRI, which was performed at 6 months after onset, showed that the contralateral primary sensorimotor cortex was activated during affected （left） hand movements. Diffusion tensor tractography results showed that at 2 weeks after stroke onset, pyramidal tracts of the affected hemisphere originated from the primary motor cortex and descended along the known pathway of the pyramidal tract with an aberrant pyramidal tract, which was bypassed through the medial lemniscus from the midbrain to the lower pons. However, the pyramidal tract from midbrain to pons in the affected hemisphere could not be depicted by diffusion tensor tractography at 6 months after stroke onset; instead, only the aberrant pyramidal tract existed for the course of the disappeared pyramidal tract. Results from this study indicate that the main motor functions of the affected extremities appeared to be controlled via the aberrant pyramidal tract with degeneration of the pyramidal tract in the brainstem of the affected hemisphere.

The anatomical organization of the corticopontocerebellar tract （CPCT） in the human brain remains poorly understood. The present study investigated probabilistic tractography of the CPCT in the human brain using diffusion tensor tractography with functional magnetic resonance imaging. CPCT data was obtained from 14 healthy subjects. CPCT images were obtained from functional magnetic resonance imaging and diffusion tensor tractography, revealing that the CPCT originated from the primary sensorimotor cortex and descended to the pontine nucleus through the corona radiata, the posterior limb of the internal capsule, and the cerebral peduncle. After crossing the pons through the transverse pontine fibers, the CPCT entered the cerebellum via the middle cerebral peduncle. However, some variation was detected in the midbrain （middle cerebral peduncle and/or medial lemniscus） and pons （ventral and/or dorsal transverse pontine fibers）. The CPCT was analyzed in 3 dimensions from the cerebral cortex to the cerebellum. These results could be informative for future studies of motor control in the human brain.

Subdural hematoma can cause compression or damage to the neural tracts in the brain;however,very little is known about this *** report on a patient with subdural hematoma who was evaluated by diffusion tensor imaging prior to and after trephination and drainage of subdural hematoma.A 58-year-old male patient and ten age-matched normal control subjects were *** patient showed mild hemiparesis for 3 weeks prior to *** hemiparesis recovered to a nearly normal state at 5 weeks post-surgery when the follow up diffusion tensor image was *** diffusion tensor image parameters,fractional anisotropy and apparent diffusion coefficient,were measured along the corticospinal ***-operative diffusion tensor image showed that the corticospinal tract of the affected hemisphere seemed to be injured or ***,the follow up diffusion tensor image showed recovery of this corticospinal tract to a normal *** would appear that diffusion tensor images are a useful tool for evaluation of the effects of subdural hematomas on neural tracts.
