Clinical outcome after pulmonary metastasectomy from primary hepatocellular carcinoma:Analysis of prognostic factors

AIM： To review the surgical outcomes in terms of the surgical indications and relevant prognostic factors. METHODS： Sixteen patients underwent therapeutic lung surgery between March 1999 and May 2006. The observation period was terminated on May 31, 2007. The surgical outcomes and the clinicopathological factors were compared. RESULTS： There was no mortality or major morbidity encountered in this study. The mean follow-up period after metastasectomy was 26.7 ＋ 28.2 （range： 1-99 mo）, and the median survival time was 20 mo. The 1- and 5-year survival rates were 56% and 26%, respectively. At the end of the follow-up, 1 patient died from hepatic failure without recurrence, 6 died from hepatic failure with a recurrent hepatocellular carcinoma （HCC）, and 4 died from recurrent HCC with cachexia. Among several clinical factors, Kaplan Meier analysis revealed as a treatment for the that liver transplantation primary lesion, grade of cell differentiation, and negative evidence HBV infection were independent predictive factors. On Cox＇s proportional hazard model, there were no significant factors affecting survival after pulmonary metastasectomy in patients with HCC. CONCLUSION： A metastasectomy should be performed before other treatments in selected patients, Although not significant, patients with liver transplantation of a primary HCC survived longer, Liver transplantation might be the most beneficial modality that can offer patients better survival, A multi- institutional and collaborative study would be needed for identifying clinical prognostic factors predicting survival in patients with HCC and lung metastasis.

Comparison of different nutritional assessments in detecting malnutrition among gastric cancer patients

AIM: To evaluate the prevalence of preoperative and postoperative malnutrition and the relationships between objective and subjective nutritional assessment of gastric cancer patients. METHODS: From October 2005 to July 2006, we studied 80 patients with no evidence of recurrent disease and no loss to follow-up after curative surgery for gastric cancer. In this group, 9 patients underwent total gastrectomy and 71 patients subtotal gastrectomy. At admission, 6 and 12 mo after surgery, the patients were assessed on the subjective global assessment (SGA), nutritional risk screening (NRS-2002), nutritional risk index (NRI) and by anthropometric measurements and laboratory data. Differences between the independent groups were assessed with the Student's t test and oneway analysis of variance. Spearman's rank correlation coefficients were calculated to evaluate the association between the scores and variables. RESULTS: The prevalence of malnutrition at admissionwas 31% by SGA and 43% by NRS-2002. At admission, the anthropometric data were lower in the malnourished groups defined by the SGA and NRS-2002 assessments, but did not differ between the groups using the NRI assessment. Body weight (BW), body mass index (BMI), triceps skin fold and midarm circumference were significantly reduced, but the total lymphocyte count, albumin, protein, cholesterol and serum iron levels did not decrease during the postoperative period. Six months after surgery, there was a good correlation between the nutritional assessment tools (SGA and NRS-2002) and the other nutritional measurement tools (BW, BMI, and anthropometric measurements). However, 12 mo after surgery, most patients who were assessed as malnourished by SGA and NRS-2002 had returned to their preoperative status, although their BW, BMI, and anthropometric measurements still indicated a malnourished status. CONCLUSION: A combination of objective and subjective assessments is needed for the early detection of the nutritional status

Solvent extraction and stripping of lithium ion from aqueous solution and its application to seawater

For the development of lithium ion recovery process from seawater, a series of experimental researches were performed. Solvent extraction of lithium ion from aqueous solution using kerosene as solvent was proposed. Lithium ion is effectively extracted by thenoyltrifluoroace- tone-trioctylphosphine oxide （TTA-TOPO） in kerosene within 80 min. Extraction efficiency is severely influenced by stoichiometric parameters. Among the stoichiometric parameters, volume ratio of aqueous （A） to extraction （E） solution is the most influential parameter. After extrac- tion, lithium ion could be easily stripped from the extraction solution by acidic solutions. Stripping efficiency decreases with pH of acidic solutions, and the kind of acid does not affect the stripping efficiency. Extraction efficiency main- tains at more than 93 % even when the extraction solution is recycled three times. 65 % of lithium ion can be extracted from seawater by this solvent extraction process when magnesium ion is precipitated by NHaOH prior to solvent extraction process. Other metallic ions in seawater decrease the extraction efficiency of lithium ion.

Switching-on of serotonergic calcium signaling in activated hepatic stellate cells

AIM:To investigate serotonergic Ca 2+ signaling and the expression of 5-hydroxytryptamine(5-HT) receptors,as well as Ca 2+ transporting proteins,in hepatic stellate cells(HSCs) . METHODS:The intracellular Ca 2+ concentration([Ca 2+ ]i) of isolated rat HSCs was measured with a fluorescence microscopic imaging *** PCR was per-formed to determine the transcriptional levels of 5-HT receptors and endoplasmic reticulum(ER) proteins involved in Ca 2+ storage and release in cultured rat HSCs. RESULTS:Distinct from quiescent cells,activated HSCs exhibited[Ca 2+ ]i transients following treatment with 5-HT,which was abolished by U-73122,a phospholipase C *** of 5-HT2A and 5-HT2B receptors,but not 5-HT3,was prominent during trans-differentiation of *** with ritanserin,a 5-HT2 antagonist,inhibited[Ca 2+ ]i changes upon application of *** of type 1 inositol-5'-triphosphate receptor and type 2 sarcoplasmic/endoplasmic reticulum Ca 2+ ATPase were also increased during activation of HSCs and serve as the major isotypes for ER Ca 2+ storage and release in activated *** 2+ binding chaperone proteins of the ER,including calreticulin,calnexin and calsequestrin,were up-regulated following activation of HSCs. CONCLUSION:The appearance of 5-HT-induced[Ca 2+ ]i response accompanied by upregulation of metabotropic 5-HT2 receptors and Ca 2+ transporting/chaperone ER proteins may participate in the activating process of HSCs.

Pancreatic tuberculosis masquerading as pancreatic serous cystadenoma

Solitary pancreatic involvement of tuberculosis is rare, especially in an immunocompetent individual, and it may be misdiagnosed as pancreatic cystic neoplasms. Pancreatic cystic neoplasms are being identified in increasing numbers, probably because of the frequent use of radiology and advances in endoscopic techniques. However, they are composed of a variety of neoplasms with a wide range of malignant potential, and it is often difficult to differentiate pancreatic tuberculosis mimicking cystic neoplasms from benign or malignant pancreatic cystic neoplasms. Non-surgical diagnosis of pancreatic tuberculosis is inconclusive and continues to be a challenge in many cases. If so, then laparotomy should be employed to establish the diagnosis. Therefore, pancreatic tuberculosis should be kept in mind during the differential diagnosis of solitary cystic masses in the pancreas. We report a patient who had solitary pancreatic tuberculosis masquerading as pancreatic serous cystadenoma.

Ultrafast synthesis of gold nanoparticles on cellulose nanocrystals via microwave irradiation and their dyes-degradation catalytic activity

This study represents a well-dispersed gold nanoparticles(AuNPs)synthesis process via cellulose nanocrystals(CNC)which acts as both reducing and supporting *** synthesis process was ultrafast and completed in a few seconds using microwave *** entire synthesis process was cost-effective,sustainable and *** synthesized(AuNPs/CNC)nanocomposite was investigated by transmission electron microscopy,selected area electron diffraction,Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy,energy dispersive X-ray analysis,X-ray diffraction,and UV–vis *** obtained AuNPs were well accumulated on the CNC surface and had a uniform spherical shape with an average diameter of 8±5.3 *** diameter of AuNPs could be altered by tuning the concentration of CNC *** synthesized AuNPs/CNC nanocomposite film exhibited excellent degradation properties against various organic dyes,namely,Allura red,Congo red,Rhodamine B and *** ultrafast degradation reactions followed pseudo first order *** the catalytic degradation reaction,AuNPs/CNC was transmitting electrons from a donor(NaBH4)to an acceptor(a dye).

Nanocomposite quasi-solid-state electrolyte for high-safety lithium batteries

Rechargeable lithium batteries are attractive power sources for electronic devices and are being aggressively developed for vehicular use. Nevertheless, problems with their safety and reliability must be solved for the large-scale use of lithium batteries in transportation and grid-storage applications. In this study, a unique hybrid solid-state electrolyte composed of an ionic liquid electrolyte (LiTFSI/Pyr14TFSI) and BaTiO3 nanosize ceramic particles was prepared without a polymer. The electrolyte exhibited high thermal stability, a wide electrochemical window, good ionic conductivity of 1.3 × 10−3 S·cm−1 at 30 °C, and a remarkably high lithium-ion transference number of 0.35. The solid-state LiFePO4 cell exhibited the best electrochemical properties among the reported solid-state batteries, along with a reasonable rate capability. Li/LiCoO2 cells prepared using this nanocomposite solid electrolyte exhibited high performance at both room temperature and a high temperature, confirming their potential as lithium batteries with enhanced safety and a wide range of operating temperatures.

Reversible and controllable threshold voltage modulation for n-channel MoS2 and p-channel MoTe_(2 )field-effect transistors via multiple counter doping with ODTS/poly-L-lysine charge enhancers

Confronted by the inherent physical limitations in scaling down Si technology,transition metal dichalcogenides(TMDCs)as alternatives are being tremendously researched and paid attention ***,mature counter doping technology for TMDCs is still elusive,and thus,a controllable and reversible charge enhancer is adopted for acceptor(or donor)-like doping via octadecyltrichlorosilane(ODTS)(or poly-L-lysine(PLL))***,multiple counter doping for TMDC field-effect transistors(FETs),combined with a threshold voltage(V;h)freezing scheme,renders the V_(th) modulation controllable,with negligible degradation and decent sustainability of FETs even after each treatment of a representative charge *** parallel,the counter doping mechanism is systematically investigated via photoluminescence spectroscopy,X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy,atomic force microscopy(AFM),surface energy characterization,and measurement of optoelectronic properties under illumination with light of various *** impressively,complementary inverters,composed of type-converted molybdenum ditelluride(MoTe_(2)>FETs and hetero-TMDC FETs in enhancement mode,are demonstrated via respective ODTS/PLL ***,driving backplane application for micro-light-emitting diode(p-LED)displays and physical validation of a corresponding counter doping scheme even for flexible polyethylene terephthalate(PET)substrates could be leveraged to relieve daunting challenges in the application of nanoscale Si-based three-dimensional(3D)stacked systems,with potential adoption of ultralow power and monolithic optical interconnection technology.

Data Augmentation Using Contour Image for Convolutional Neural Network

With the development of artificial intelligence-related technologies such as deep learning,various organizations,including the government,are making various efforts to generate and manage big data for use in artificial ***,it is difficult to acquire big data due to various social problems and restrictions such as personal information *** are many problems in introducing technology in fields that do not have enough training data necessary to apply deep learning ***,this study proposes a mixed contour data augmentation technique,which is a data augmentation technique using contour images,to solve a problem caused by a lack of ***,a famous convolutional neural network(CNN)architecture,and CIFAR-10,a benchmark data set,are used for experimental performance evaluation to prove the superiority of the proposed *** to prove that high performance improvement can be achieved even with a small training dataset,the ratio of the training dataset was divided into 70%,50%,and 30%for comparative *** a result of applying the mixed contour data augmentation technique,it was possible to achieve a classification accuracy improvement of up to 4.64%and high accuracy even with a small amount of data *** addition,it is expected that the mixed contour data augmentation technique can be applied in various fields by proving the excellence of the proposed data augmentation technique using benchmark datasets.
