Potato Responds to Salt Stress by Increased Activity of Antioxidant Enzymes

To understand the response of potato to salt stress, antioxidant enzyme activities and ion content were analyzed for a sensitive and a tolerant cultivar. Nodal cuttings of the tolerant cultivar, Kennebec, and the sensitive cultivar, Concord, were exposed to media without or with 30, 60, 90 or 120 mmol/L NaCI for 4 weeks. On exposure to NaCI, the length and fresh and dry weight of both shoots and roots of Concord showed greater decrease than those of Kennebec. The decrease in shoot growth was more severe than that of the root for both cultivars. The K^＋ content of shoots and roots of both cultivars was reduced in a dose-dependent manner by exposure to NaCl; the Na^＋ content increased. Activities of ascorbate peroxidase, catalase and glutathione reductase were increased in NaCl-exposed shoots of Kennebec; the corresponding activities in NaCI-exposed shoots of Concord were decreased. Roots of both cultivars showed similar changes in the activities of these enzymes on exposure to NaCI. These studies established that enzyme activities in Concord shoots are inversely related to the NaCI concentration, whereas those in Kennebec do not show a dose dependency, which is also the case for the roots of both cultivars. Our findings suggest that an increase in activity of antioxidant enzymes, such as ascorbate peroxidase, catalase and glutathione reductase, can contribute to salt tolerance in Kennebec, a salt resistant cultivar of potato.

Gibberellin （GA） is collectively referred to a group of diterpenoid acids, some of which act as plant hormones and are essential for normal plant growth and development. DNA microarray technology has become the standard tool for the parallel quantification of large numbers of messenger RNA transcripts. The power of this approach has been demonstrated in dissecting plant physiology and development, and in unraveling the underlying cellular signaling pathways. To understand the molecular mechanism by which GA regulates the growth and development of plants, with reference to the monocot model plant-rice, it is essential to identify and analyze more genes and their products at the transcription and translation levels that are regulated by GA. With the availability of draft sequences of two major rice types, indica and japonica rice, it has become possible to analyze global expression profiles of genes on a genome scale. In this review, the progress made in finding new genes in rice leaf sheath using microarray system and their characterization is discussed. It is believed that the findings made in this regard have important implications for understanding the mechanism by which GA regulates the growth and development of rice.

To gain an enhanced understanding of the mechanism by which gibberellins （GAs） regulate the growth and development of plants, it is necessary to identify proteins regulated by GA. Proteome analysis techniques have been applied as a direct, effective, and reliable tool in differential protein expressions. In previous studies, sixteen proteins showed differences in accumulation levels as a result of treatment with GA3, uniconazole, or abscisic acid （ABA）, and/or the differences between the GA-deficient semi-dwarf mutant, Tan-ginbozu, and normal cultivars. Among these proteins, aldolase increased in roots treated with GA3, was present at low levels in Tan-ginbozu roots, and decreased in roots treated with uniconazole or ABA. In a root elongation assay, the growth of aldolase-antisense transgenic rice was half of that of vector control transgenic rice. These results indicate that increases in aldolase activity stimulate the glycolytic in the GA-induced growth of roots. In among GA, aldolase, and root growth. pathway and may play an important role this review, we discuss the relationship among GA, aldolase, and root growth.

在植物的生长发育过程中,Ca2+信号传递系统有着广泛的作用,CDPKs和CRT是该途径中两个重要的组分,识别和传递植物细胞中Ca2+浓度的变化。多个CRT同源蛋白被分离纯化并被证明与植物逆境应答有关,但每个具体CRT的确切功能尚不清楚。作为一个基因家族,CDPKs在拟南芥中有34个成员,在水稻中有27个成员,研究证明它们与多种细胞信号传导有关,但每个成员的功能还不明确。为了解析OsCDPK13和CRT在水稻抗低温逆境中的作用与机制,我们用OsCDPK13和 CRTintP1分别转化抗寒性不同的水稻品种,并用蛋白质组学方法研究组成型表达OsCDPK13和 CRTintP1对水稻中蛋白质表达和蛋白质修饰的影响。 Western blot结果表明,不同抗寒能力的水稻品种其OsCDPK13、CRT和CRTintP1表达水平不同。当OsCDPK13和CRTintP1组成型表达时,所有品种抗寒能力提高。这表明OsCDPK13、CRT和 CRTintP1在水稻抗低温逆境中起一定作用。激酶凝胶分析表明,在组成型表达OsCDPK13转基因植株中,蛋白质激酶的活性显著提高,而在转反义OsCDPK13的转基因植株中蛋白质激酶活性明显降低。同时发现,在组成型表达OsCDPK13的植株中多种蛋白质磷酸化水平发生变化。2-DE分析表明, 在组成型表达OsCDPK13的植株中12个细胞质中的蛋白质表达水平发生变化。

Aim: The aim of this study is to examine the effect of walking 10,000 steps per day on depressive symptoms for the company employees and their spouses in Japan. Method: Subjects were recruited from the participants of a walking campaign carried out by a Japanese company where the goal was to achieve 600,000 steps in 60 days. Among 221 subjects who participated in the campaign, 176 subjects (79.6%) agreed to participate in the present study. Sociodemographics and other information including depressive symptoms were assessed using a questionnaire. Result: Out of the 171 participants, 125 achieved the goal (73.1%). In the achiever’s group, the GHQ-12 score was significantly reduced at the end of the campaign compared with the non-achiever’s group. Exercise habit and the less overtime work (

Purpose: The aim of the present study is to examine the performance of young Japanese cross-country skiers of different competitive levels with the use of Yo-Yo tests and the 12-minute run test (12MRT) that have been demonstrated to be related to each level, and to know which test is suitable for different competitive performance. Methods: Elite group (N = 9) was 16.9 ± 0.3 years and moderate trained group (N = 22) was 16.1 ± 0.9 years. The testing sessions consisted of the following: 1) Vertical jump and 50m sprint;2) the Yo-Yo tests level 1 and 2 (intermittent recovery);3) 12MRT. Results: Results showed the vertical jump heights and 50m sprint that no significant both performances differences were found among the two groups. Significant the Yo-Yo tests and 12MRT performances differences were found between the two groups (p < 0.05). Performance test (%) showed the ratio of moderate trained group towards elite group. The Yo-Yo tests performance was low enough compared with the result of 12MRT in moderate trained group. Conclusions: It is therefore valid to assume that low Yo-Yo tests performance due to immature anaerobic in cross-country skiers was a new limiting factor in the competitive level.
