Hydroxychloroquine,a 4-aminoquinoline derivative,is indicated in systemic lupus erythematosus,rheumatoid arthritis and other inflammatory rheumatic diseases[1].Its main adverse drug reactions are retinopathy during long-term exposure with high doses,cardiac damage with arrhythmias,potentially severe skin damage,neuromyopathy,and hematological damage such as bone marrow aplasia and agranulocytosis[2].Eosinophilia,although very rare,is a known side effect of this drug[3].We came across a case of severe eosinophilia without skin manifestations during the treatment of COVID-19 with hydroxychloroquine.

AIM： To evaluate total antioxidant status （TAS）, total oxidant status （TOS）, and the oxidative stress index （OSI） of the aqueous humor （AH） in patients with glaucoma. METHODS： The prospective study was composed of a study group （n-31） and a control group （n=31）. Fifteen patients in the study group were diagnosed with primary open angle glaucoma （POAG）, and 16 patients were diagnosed with pseudoexfoliation glaucoma （PEG）. The control group was composed of non-glaucomatous patients with cataracts. AH samples were collected and analyzed for TAS, TOS, and OSI levels. RESULTS： Mean AH TAS level was significantly higher in patients with glaucoma than that in the control group （P〈0.01）. Mean TOS and OSI levels tended to increase in patients with glaucoma. No significant differences in TAS, TOS, or OSI levels were observed between patients with POAG and PEG. CONCLUSION： High levels of TAS were observed in patients with glaucoma, which was likely a response to the increased oxidative stress observed in these patients.

AIM:To measure changes of total oxidant status(TOS)and total antioxidant capacity(TAC) of aqueous humor(AH) in diabetic retinopathy(DR) patients,and to determine if there were any differences in TOS and TAC of AH in diabetic patients without retinopathy compared with non-diabetic patients.·METHODS:One hundred and three eyes of 103patients who were enrolled for cataract surgery were included in this *** were grouped according to presence of diabetes and stage of *** to cataract surgery,0.1mL to 0.2mL of AH was aspirated and analyzed for TAC and TOS level using a colorimetric method.·RESULTS:TOS levels were highest among proliferative diabetic retinopathy(PDR) patients and lowest in patients with only *** were statistically significant between all groups(P <0.05).Whereas result between diabetic without retinopathy patients and non-proliferative diabetic retinopathy(NPDR) patients was not statistically significant(P =0.757).TAC levels were highest in patients with only cataract and lowest among PDR patients and results were statistically significant between all groups(P <0.05).·CONCLUSION:Aqueous humor TAC levels are low in diabetic patients and reduced further in DR patients,TOS levels are increased in diabetic patients and this is exacerbated in DR patients.

Investigation of Swelling/Sorption Characteristics of Highly Swollen AAm/AMPS Hydrogels and Semi IPNs with PEG as Biopotential Sorbent

The aim of this study was to investigate the equilibrium swelling and sorption properties of chemically crosslinked copolymeric hydrogels as biopotential sorbent consisting of acrylamide (AAm) and 2-acrylamido-2-methyl-1-propanesulfonic acid (AMPS). Semi-interpenetrating polymer network (semi IPNs) hydrogel, composed of AAm with AMPS as co-monomer, with poly (ethylene glycol) (PEG) and a multifunctional crosslinker such as trimethylolpropane triacrylate (TMPTA) was prepared. AAm/AMPS hydrogels and AAm/AMPS/PEG semi IPNs were synthesized by free radical solution polymerization by using ammonium persulphate (APS)/N,N,N’,N’-tetramethylethylenediamine (TEMED) as redox initiating pair. Swelling experiments were performed in water, 0.01 M and 0.03 M aqueous urea solutions at 25oC, gravimetrically. The hydrogels showed enormous swelling in aqueous urea/water medium and displayed swelling characteristics that were highly depended on the chemical composition of the hydrogels. FTIR spectroscopy was used to identify the presence of different repeating units in the semi IPNs. Some swelling and diffusion characteristics were calculated for different semi IPNs and hydrogels prepared under various formulations. For sorption of cationic dye, Lauths violet into the hydrogels was studied by batch sorption technique at 25oC. Dye removal capacity, adsorption percentage and partition coefficient of the hydrogels was investigated. Swelling and dye sorption properties of AAm/AMPS hydrogels and AAm/AMPS/PEG semi IPNs were investigated as a function of chemical composition of the hydrogels.

Novel sorbent hydrogels containing acrylamide/sodium vinylsulfonate, carboxymethyl cellulose and zeolite were synthesized with free radical solution polymerization by using ammonium persulfate/N,N,N’,N’-tetramethylethyle-nediamine as redox initiating pair in presence of poly(ethylene glycol) diacrylate as crosslinker. It was to investigate the water uptake properties of series of the novel hydrogels, the semi IPNs and the hybrid/biohybrid composite hydrogel sorbents synthesized in this study. Water uptake studies were performed in water and in water-solvent (acetone, methanol and tetrahydrofuran) binary mixtures at 25°C, gravimetrically. Some swelling and diffusion parameters were calculated and discussed. It has been seen that the lower equilibrium swelling factor values in all solvent compositions in comparison with the equilibrium swelling factor values in water.

A high-performance liquid chromatography analysis method with an evaporative light-scattering detector has been developed for the separation and quantitative analysis of free fatty acids in biological matrices. Core-shell reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography separation of 10 free fatty acids is achieved within 10.5 min using a methanol/water (0.05% trifluoroacetic acid) eluent gradient. After optimization, the drift tube and nebulization temperature of the evaporative light-scattering detector was set at 35°C, nitrogen flow-rate at 1.1 standard liter per minute and column temperature at 25°C. All calibration curves showed good regression (r2 > 0.9975). A validation procedure following the International Conference on Harmonisation guidelines was implemented to certify the method. Relative standard deviations did not exceed 1.5% and 4.25% for repeatability and reproducibility respectively.

The amount of elements in plants is important for biogeochemical explorations. Some plants which were accumulated extremely elements, are called indicator plants. In this study, the 11 plant species and soil samples were collected boron deposits area in Kirka (Eskisehir). Boron is determinated in plants (leaves and twigs) and soil samples. Additionally, statistical relations were established between the B values of plant and soil samples and three plants were only found. The boron in twigs of Puccinellia intermedia (n = 17, r = 0.7274), twigs of Genista aucheri (n = 26, r = 0.8581 and leaves of Pinus nigra (n = 16, r = 0.6805) species are found 119, 81 and 115 mg/kg respectively. This species was reflected boron in soil and their used indicator plant for boron. The indicator plants could be successfully used for biogeochemical prospecting and environmental monitoring.
