Classification of higher- and lower-mileage runners based on running kinematics

Background: Running-related overuse injuries can result from the combination of extrinsic(e.g., running mileage) and intrinsic risk factors(e.g.,biomechanics and gender), but the relationship between these factors is not folly understood. therefore, the first purpose of this study was to determine whether we could classify higher-and lower-mileage runners according to differences in lower extremity kinematics during the stance and swing phases of running gait. I he second purpose was to subgroup the runners by gender and determine whether we could classify higherand lower-mileage runners in male and female ***: Participants were allocated to the "higher-mileage" group(≥32 km/week; n= 41(30 females)) or to the "lower-mileage" group(≤25 km;n= 40(29 females)). three-dimensional kinematic data were collected during 60 s of treadmill running at a self-selected speed(2.61 ± 0.23 m/s).A support vector machine classifier identified kinematic differences between higher-and lower-mileage groups based on principal component ***: Higher-and lower-mileage runners(both genders) could be separated with 92.59% classification accuracy. When subgrouping by gender,higher-and lower-mileage female runners could be separated with 89.83% classification accuracy, and higher-and lower-mileage male runners could be separated with 100% classification ***: these results demonstrate there are distinct kinematic differences between subgroups related to both mileage and gender, and that these factors need to be considered in future research.

Sex differences in the influence of social context, salient social stimulation and amphetamine on ultrasonic vocalizations in prairie voles

Prairie voles(Microtus ochrogaster)are a socially monogamous rodent species and their cooperative behaviors require extensive communication between *** use ultrasonic vocalizations(USVs)to communicate and because a prairie vole breeder pair must engage in extensive cooperation for successful reproduction,auditory communication may be critical for this ***,we sought to characterize USVs in adult male and female prairie voles,and to determine how these calls are influenced by social context,salient social stimuli and the psychostimulant drug of abuse amphetamine(AMPH).Here,we characterize prairie vole USVs by showing the range of frequencies of prairie vole USVs,the proportion of various call types,how these call types compare between males and females,and how they are influenced by social stimulation and *** caused a robust increase in the number of USVs in both males and females and there was a dramatic sex difference in the complexity of call structures of AMPH-induced USVs,with males emitting more elaborate ***,we show that novel(***)social cues evoked differential increases in USVs across sex,with males showing a much more robust increase in USV production,both with respect to the frequency and complexity of USV *** to an estrous female in particular caused an extraordinary increase in USVs in male *** data suggest that USVs may be a useful measure of social motivation in this species,including how social behaviors can be impacted by drugs of abuse.

Management of stage Ⅳ rectal cancer: Palliative options

Approximately 30% of patients with rectal cancer present with metastatic disease. Many of these patients have symptoms of bleeding or obstruction. Several treatment options are available to deal with the various complications that may afflict these patients. Endorectal stenting, laser ablation, and operative resection are a few of the options available to the patient with a malignant large bowel obstruction. A thorough understanding of treatment options will ensure the patient is offered the most effective therapy with the least amount of associated morbidity. In this review, we describe various options for palliation of symptoms in patients with metastatic rectal cancer. Additionally, we briefly discuss treatment for asymptomatic patients with metastatic disease.

Yttrium-90 (Y-90) radioembolization,also known as selective internal radiation therapy (SIRt),is a regional hepatic therapy used in the treatment of unresectable colorectal cancer (CRC) liver metastases. In SIRt,Y-90 impregnated microspheres are injected into the VASCULAR SUPPLY of hepatic tumor,leading to selective irradiation and necrosis of tumor tISSUE. While several studies demonstrate improved local control and survival with SIRt,the specific indications for this therapy have yet to be defined. typically,SIRt is given in combination with chemotherapy as multimodal treatment for unresectable hepatic CRC. However,it HAS ALSO FOUND INCREASING USE as a salvage therapy in chemo-refractory patients. Herein,the authors describe their experience with SIRt as "stand alone" therapy in a surgically-prohibitive,chemotherapy naive patient with hepatic CRC metastasis. the results suggest that Y-90 SIRt may have potential applications beyond its usual role as a palliative or salvage therapy for unresectable hepatic CRC.

Review of health risks of low testosterone and testosterone administration

Hypogonadism is prevalent in older men and testosteronereplacement therapy(tRt) for older hypogonadal men is a promising therapy. However, a number of important clinical concerns over tRt safety remain unsolved due to a lack of large-scale randomized clinical trials directly comparing the health risks of untreated hypogonadism vs long-term use of tRt. Meta-analyses of clinical trials of tRt as of 2010 have identified three major adverse events resulting from tRt: polycythemia, an increase in prostate-related events, and a slight reduction in serum high-density lipoprotein cholesterol. there are other purported health risks but their incidence can be neither confirmed nor denied based on the small number of subjects that have been studied to date. Furthermore, subsequent literature is equivocal with regard to the safety and utility of tRt and this topic has been subject to contentious debate. Since January 2014, the United States Food and Drug Administration has released two official announcements regarding the safety of tRt and clinical monitoring the risks in tRt users. Additionally, the health risks related to the clinical presentation of low or declining testosterone levels not been resolved in the current literature. Because tRt is prescribed in the context of putative risks resulting from reduced testosterone levels, we reviewed the epidemiology and reported risks of low testosterone levels. We also highlight the current information about tRt utilization, the risks most often claimed to be associated with tRt, and current or emerging alternatives to tRt.

the consequences of genomic architecture on ecological speciation in postglacial fishes

the quest for the origin of species has entered the genomics era. Despite decades of evidence confirming the role of the environment in ecological speciation, an understanding of the genomics of ecological speciation is still in its infancy. In this review, we explore the role of genomic architecture in ecological speciation in postglacial fishes. Growing evidence for the num- ber, location, effect size, and interactions among the genes underlying population persistence, adaptive trait divergence, and re- productive isolation in these fishes reinforces the importance of considering genomic architecture in studies of ecological speci- ation. Additionally, these populations likely adapt to new freshwater environments by selection on standing genetic variation, as de novo mutations are unlikely under such recent divergence times. We hypothesize that modular genomic architectures in post- glacial fish taxa may be associated with the probability of population persistence. Empirical studies have confirmed the genic na- ture of ecological speciation, implicating surprisingly extensive linkage disequilibrium across the genome. An understanding of these genomic mosaics and how they contribute to reproductive barriers remains unclear, but migration rates and the strength of selection at these loci is predicted to influence the likelihood of population divergence. Altogether, understanding the role of ge- nomic architecture is an important component of speciation research and postglacial fishes continue to provide excellent organ- isms to test these questions, both from the perspective of variation in architectures among taxa, and with respect to the distinct environments they have colonized. However, more empirical tests of ecological speciation predictions are needed [Current Zoo- logy 59 （1）： 53-71, 2013].

Overcoming maladaptive plasticity through plastic compensation

Most species evolve within fluctuating environments, and have developed adaptations to meet the challenges posed by environmental heterogeneity. One such adaptation is phenotypic plasticity, or the ability of a single genotype to produce multiple environmentally-induced phenotypes. Yet, not all plasticity is adaptive. Despite the renewed interest in adaptive phenotypic plas- ticity and its consequences for evolution, much less is known about maladaptive plasticity. However, maladaptive plasticity is likely an important driver of phenotypic similarity among populations living in different environments. this paper traces four strategies for overcoming maladaptive plasticity that result in phenotypic similarity, two of which involve genetic changes （standing genetic variation, genetic compensation） and two of which do not （standing epigenetic variation, plastic compensation）. Plastic compensation is defined as adaptive plasticity overcoming maladaptive plasticity. In particular, plastic compensation may increase the likelihood of genetic compensation by facilitating population persistence. We provide key terms to disentangle these aspects of phenotypic plasticity and introduce examples to reinforce the potential importance of plastic compensation for under- standing evolutionary change

Compressibility of a natural kyanite to 17.5 GPa

the compressional behaviour of a natural kyanite,(Al1.99Fe0.01)SiO5,has been investigated to about 17.5 GPa at 300 K using a diamond-anvil cell and synchrotron X-ray *** pressure-volume data fitted to the third-order Birch-Murnaghan equation of state(EoS) yield an isothermal bulk modulus(K0t) of 192 ± 6 GPa and pressure derivative(K00t) of 6 ± *** K00t is fixed as 4,the derived K0t is 201 ± 2 *** values are in excellent agreement with most experimental determinations in the ***,it can be concluded that the compressibility of kyanite under high pressures has been accurately constrained.

Investigation of androgen receptor-dependent alternative splicing has identified a unique subtype of lethal prostate cancer

A complete proteomics study characterizing active androgen receptor(AR)complexes in prostate cancer(PCa)cells identified a diversity of protein interactors with tumorigenic annotations,including known RNA splicing ***,we chose to further investigate the functional role of AR-mediated alternative RNA splicing in PCa disease *** selected two AR-interacting RNA splicing factors,Src associated in mitosis of 68 kDa(SAM68)and DEAD(Asp-Glu-Ala-Asp)box helicase 5(DDX5)to examine their associative roles in AR-dependent alternative RNA *** assess the true physiological role of AR in alternative RNA splicing,we assessed splicing profiles of LNCaP PCa cells using exon microarrays and correlated the results to PCa clinical *** a result,we were able to highlight alternative splicing events of clinical *** use of exon-mini gene cassettes illustrated hormone-dependent AR-mediated exon-inclusion splicing events with SAM68 or exon-exclusion splicing events with DDX5 *** physiological significance in PCa was investigated through the application of clinical exon array analysis,where we identified exon-gene sets that were able to delineate aggressive disease progression profiles and predict patient disease-free outcomes independently of pathological clinical *** a clinical dataset with patients categorized as prostate cancer-specific death(PCSD),these exon gene sets further identified a select group of patients with extremely poor disease-free ***,these results strongly suggest a nonclassical role of AR in mediating robust alternative RNA splicing in ***,AR-mediated alternative spicing contributes to aggressive PCa progression,where we identified a new subtype of lethal PCa defined by AR-dependent alternative splicing.
