Organic bases as additives for steam-assisted gravity drainage

Steam-assisted gravity drainage(SAGd)is a mature technology for bitumen recovery from oil ***,it is an energy-intensive process that requires large amounts of steam to heat and mobilize *** purpose of this work is to develop ways to enhance SAGd performance through the use of organic base *** research is approached from three focus areas that supplement and guide each other:characterization tests,sand-pack floods,and computational simulation.A number of key mechanisms for enhancing oil recovery were identified,high-temperature additive characterization tests were developed,and promising alkalis were tested in porous *** was employed to history-match sandpack flood production data,in order to demonstrate the effect of an additive on the oil–water relative *** on these results,it was concluded that oxygenated organic bases had the most potential for improving bitumen recovery through reducing the oil–water interfacial tension(IFT)by increasing the pH of the *** organic bases favorably modify the interfacial energies between the immiscible oil–water phases and enable them to flow easily through the porous media during ***-pack flood tests have successfully demonstrated a 10%–15%improvement in bitumen recovery,over baseline,in the presence of IFT-reducing *** results further showed that an IFT reduction had a positive impact on SAGd *** work demonstrates the potential of organic bases to improve not only SAGd,but other steam injection ***,a number of experimental methods were developed,tried,and tested during the course of this work.

Management of stage Ⅳ rectal cancer: Palliative options

Approximately 30% of patients with rectal cancer present with metastatic disease. Many of these patients have symptoms of bleeding or obstruction. Several treatment options are available to deal with the various complications that may afflict these patients. Endorectal stenting, laser ablation, and operative resection are a few of the options available to the patient with a malignant large bowel obstruction. A thorough understanding of treatment options will ensure the patient is offered the most effective therapy with the least amount of associated morbidity. In this review, we describe various options for palliation of symptoms in patients with metastatic rectal cancer. Additionally, we briefly discuss treatment for asymptomatic patients with metastatic disease.

Forecasting the impacts of chemical pollution and climate change interactions on the health of wildlife

Global climate change is impacting organisms, biological communities and ecosystems around the world. While most research has focused on characterizing how the climate is changing, including modeling future climatic conditions and predicting the impacts of these conditions on biodiversity, it is also the case that climate change is altering the environmental impacts of chemical pollution. Future climate conditions are expected to influence both the worldwide distribution of chemicals and the toxi- cological consequences of chemical exposures to organisms. Many of the environmental changes associated with a warming global climate （e.g., increased average - and possibly extreme - temperatures; intense periods of drier and wetter conditions; reduced ocean pH; altered salinity dynamics in estuaries） have the potential to enhance organism susceptibility to chemical toxicity. Addi- tionally, chemical exposures themselves may impair the ability of organisms to cope with the changing environmental conditions of the shifting climate. Such reciprocity in the interactions between climate change and chemicals illustrates the complexity inherent in predicting the toxicological consequences of chemical exposures under future climate scenarios. Here, we summarize what is currently known about the potential reciprocal effects of climate change and chemical toxicity on wildlife, and depict current approaches and ongoing challenges for incorporating climate effects into chemical testing and assessment. Given the rapid pace of new man-made chemistries, the development of accurate and rapid methods to evaluate multiple chemical and non-chemical stressors in an ecologically relevant context will be critical to understanding toxic and endocrine-disrupting effects of chemical pollutants under future climate scenarios [Current Zoology 61 （4）： 669-689, 2015].

Flow velocity and temperature sensing using thermosensitive fluorescent polymer seed particles in water

Particle image velocimetry(PIV)is an experimental technique that uses microscale particles as tracers to measure the velocity of a fluid *** this paper,we seek to extend this technique to simultaneously measure fluid temperature as well,by employing a novel class of thermosensitive polymer *** this aim,we designed a process to encapsulate highly fluorescent thermosensitive NBd-AE-co-poly(N-isopropylacrylamide)polymers into optically transparent poly(dimethylsiloxane)*** novel PIV particles enable direct measurement of water velocity while serving as temperature probes that increase their fluorescence intensity when the temperature rises above 32°*** demonstrate the ability of the particles to simultaneously serve as flow tracers and temperature sensors in water,we examine the flow velocity and temperature in the wake of a heated cylinder in a cross *** results indicate the possibility of extending PIV to afford the spatial and temporal resolution of fluid velocity and temperature gradients in water,with potential application to the study of convection problems from life sciences to engineering.

Hematologic and biochemical reference intervals for specific pathogen free 6-week-old Hampshire-Yorkshire crossbred pigs

Background： Hematologic and biochemical reference intervals depend on many factors, including age. A review of the literature highlights the lack of reference intervals for 6-wk-old specific pathogen free （SPF） Hampshire-Yorkshire crossbred pigs. For translational research, 6-wk-old pigs represent an important animal model for both human juvenile colitis and diabetes mellitus type 2 given the similarities between the porcine and human gastrointestinal maturation process. The aim of this study was to determine reference intervals for hematological and biochemical parameters in healthy 6-wk-old crossbred pigs. Blood samples were collected from 66 clinically healthy Hampshire-Yorkshire pigs. The pigs were 6 wks old, represented both sexes, and were housed in a SPF facility. Automated hematological and biochemical analysis were performed using an AdVIA 120 Hematology System and a Cobas 6000 C501 Clinical Chemistry Analyzer. Results： Reference intervals were calculated using both parametric and nonparametric methods. The mean, median, minimum, and maximum values were calculated. Conclusion： As pigs are used more frequently as medical models of human disease, having reference intervals for commonly measured hematological and biochemical parameters in 6-wk-old pigs will be useful. The reference intervals calculated in this study will aid in the diagnosis and monitoring of both naturally occurring and experimentally induced disease. In comparison to published reference intervals for older non SPF pigs, notable differences in leukocyte populations, and in levels of sodium, potassium, glucose, protein, and alkaline phosphatase were observed.

Humans and wildlife are exposed to an ever-increasing array of man-made chemicals that are now meas-ured in every habitat on our planet from the Earth＇s highest mountain peaks to sediments in the deep ocean （e.g., Farrington and Takada, 2014; Quiroz et al., 2009; Veron et al., 1987; Villa et al., 2006）. In addition to the expanding variety of synthetic chemistries in use, there are many substances that are components of the Earth that may through human activities concentrate at high- levels or be released into the environment in forms that enhance their bioavailability, exposure, and toxicity potential.

The diagnosis and management of cirrhosis and portal hypertension(PH)with its complications including variceal hemorrhage,ascites,and hepatic encephalopathy continues to *** there are established“standards of care”in liver biopsy and measurement of PH,gastric varices remain an area without a universally accepted therapeutic *** concept of“Endo Hepatology”has been used to describe of the applications of endoscopic ultrasound(EUS)to these ***-liver biopsy(EUS-LB)offers an alternative to percutaneous and transjuglar liver biopsy without compromising safety or efficacy,and with added advantages including the potential to reduce sampling error by allowing biopsies in both hepatic ***,EUS-LB can be performed during the same procedure as EUS-guided portal pressure gradient(PPG)measurements,allowing for the collection of valuable diagnostic and prognostic ***-guided PPG measurements provide an appealing alternative to the transjugular approach,with proposed advantages including the ability to directly measure portal vein *** addition,EUS-guided treatment of gastric varices(GV)offers several possible advantages to current ***-guided treatment of GV allows detailed assessment of the vascular anatomy,similar efficacy and safety to current therapies,and allows the evaluation of treatment effect through doppler ultrasound *** appropriate selection of patients for these procedures is paramount to ensuring generation of useful clinical data and patient safety.

Polymersomes scalably fabricated via flash nano- precipitation are non-toxic in non-human primates and associate with leukocytes in the spleen and kidney following intravenous administration

Vesicular nanocarrier formulations confer the ability to deliver hydrophobic and hydrophilic cargos simultaneously to cells of interest in vivo. While liposomal formulations reached the clinic long ago, younger technologies such as polymeric vesicles （polymersomes） have yet to make the transition to clinical approval and use, in part due to difficulties in ensuring their safe and scalable production. In this work, we demonstrate the scalable production of poly（ethylene glycol）-block-poly（propylene sulfide）（PEG-bl-PPS） polymersomes via flash nanoprecipitation, and further show the safe administration of these nanocarriers to mice and non-human primates. In mice, PEG-bl-PPS polymersomes were found to be well tolerated at up to 200 mg/（***）. Following the administration of a more relevant 20 mg/（***） dosage in non-human primates, polymersomes were found to associate with numerous phagocytic immune cell populations, including a remarkable 68% of plasmacytoid dendritic cells and 〉 95% of macrophages in the spleen, while showing no toxicity or abnormalities in the liver, kidney, spleen, or blood. despite the presence of a dense PEG corona, neither anti-PEG antibodies nor complement activation were detected. This work provides evidence of the translatability of PEG-bI-PPS polymersomes into the clinic for therapeutic applications in humans.

Climate change is causing rapid and severe changes to many Earth systems and processes,with widespread cryospheric,ecological,and hydrological impacts globally,and especially in high northern *** is of major societal concern and there is an urgent need for improved understanding and predictive tools for environmental *** Changing Cold Regions Network(CCRN)is a Canadian research consortium with a focus to integrate existing and new experimental data with modelling and remote sensing products to understand,diagnose,and predict changing land,water,and climate,and their interactions and feedbacks over the geographic domain of the Mackenzie and Saskatchewan River Basins in *** network operates a set of 14 unique and focused Water,Ecosystem,Cryosphere and Climate(WECC)observatories within this region,which provide opportunities to observe and understand processes and their interaction,as well as develop and test numerical simulation models,and provide validation data for remote sensing *** paper describes this network and its observational,experimental,and modelling *** overview of many of the recent Earth system changes observed across the study region is provided,and some local insights from WECC observatories that may partly explain regional patterns and trends are *** of the model products being developed are discussed,and linkages with the local to international user community are reviewed—In particular,the use of WECC data towards model and remote sensing product calibration and validation is *** future activities and prospects for the network are also presented at the end of the paper.
