AIM： To evaluate the therapeutic effect of Chunggan extract （CGX）, a modified traditional Chinese hepatotherapeutic herbal, on the dimethylnitrosamine （DMN）-induced chronic liver injury model in rats. METHODS： Liver injuries were induced in Wistar rats by injection of DMN （ip, 10 mg/mL per kg） for 3 consecutive days per week for 4 wk. The rats were administered with CGX Coo, 100 or 200 mg/kg per day） or distilled water as a control daily for 4 wk starting from the 15^th d of the DMN treatment. Biochemical parameters （serum albumin, bilirubin, ALP, AST and ALT）, lipid peroxides, hydroxyproline, as well as histological changes in liver tissues were analyzed. In addition, gene expression of TNF-α, TGF-β, TIMP-1, TIMP-2, PDGF-β, and MMP-2, all of which are known to be associated with liver fibrosis, were analyzed using real-time PCR. RESULTS： CGX administration restored the spleen weight to normal alter having been increased by DMN treatment. Biochemical analysis of the serum demonstrated that CGX significantly decreased the serum level of ALP （P 〈 0.05）, ALT （P 〈 0.02）, and AST （P 〈 0.02） that had been elevated by DMN treatment. CGX administration moderately lowered lipid peroxide production and markedly lowered hydroxyproline generation caused by DMN treatment in accordance with histopathological examination. DMN treatment induced a highly upregulated expression of TNF-α, TGF-β,TIMP-1, TIMP-2, PDGF-β, and MMP-2. Of these, the gene expression encoding PDGF-β and MMP-2 was still further enhanced 2 wk after secession of the 4-wk DMN treatment, and was remarkably ameliorated by CGX administration. CONCLUSION： CGX exhibits hepatotherapeutic properties against chronic hepatocellular destruction and consequential liver fibrosis.

Quantum chemical calculation was carried out to choose a promoter which can reduce the poisoning of V2O5/TiO2 catalysts by SO2. several atoms were chosen as candidates and new catalysts were synthesized by impregnation method. The NOx conversion rate was measured at temperatures between 100 and 400 ℃ and poisoning effect was investigated. The most promising candidate promoter, se, was excluded because of its high vapor pressure. On the other hand, Sb shows best promoting properties. Sb promoted catalyst reaches the maximum NOx conversion rate at 250 ℃. It also shows considerably enhanced resistance to poisoning of V2O5/TiO2 catalysts by SO2.

Clinical characteristics of patients in their forties who underwent surgical resection for colorectal cancer in Korea

Ezetimibe improves hepatic steatosis in relation to autophagy in obese and diabetic rats

AIM: To investigate whether ezetimibe ameliorates hepatic steatosis and induces autophagy in a rat model of obesity and type 2 diabetes. METHODS: Male age-matched lean control LETO and obese and diabetic OLETF rats were administered either PBS or ezetimibe(10 mg/kg per day) via stomach gavage for 20 wk. Changes in weight gain and energy intake were regularly monitored. Blood and liver tissue were harvested after overnight fasting at the end of study. Histological assessment was performed in liver tissue. The concentrations of glucose, insulin, triglycerides(TG), free fatty acids(FFA), and total cholesterol(TC) in blood and TG, FFA, and TG in livertissue were measured. m RNA and protein abundance involved in autophagy was analyzed in the liver. To investigate the effect of ezetimibe on autophagy and reduction in hepatic fat accumulation, human Huh7 hepatocytes were incubated with ezetimibe(10 μmol/L) together with or without palmitic acid(PA, 0.5 mmol/L, 24 h). Transmission electron microscopy(TEM) was employed to demonstrate effect of ezetimibe on autophagy formation. Effects of obesity on lower urinary tract symptoms in Korean BPH patients

We analyzed the effects of obesity on lower urinary tract symptoms （LUTSs） in Korean benign prostatic hyperplasia （BPH） patients. This is a multicenter, cross-sectional, prospective study conducted in four centers in Korea. A total of 602 men with LUTSs secondary to BPH were included. BPH/LUTSs cases were men aged ≥ 40 years with intemational prostate symptom scores （IPSS） ≥ 8 points. Height, weight and waist circumference were measured. Among the 602 patients, 156 patients had a waist circumference above 90 cm, representing central obesity, and 215 patients had a body mass index above 25 kg m2. Waist circumference was positively correlated with prostate volume （P = 0.034）. Men with waist circumference 〉 90 cm experienced a 1.36-fold increased risk of severe LUTSs （95% CI 0.82-2.41） compared with men with waist circumference ≤ 90 cm. Prostate volume was positively correlated with urgency and nocturia in men with central obesity. In this population of Korean men diagnosed with BPH, central obesity rather than overall obesity seems to be the more important predictor of LUTSs correlated with BPH.

The effects of EMLA cream on pain responses of preschoolers

The aim of present study was to assess the effects of a eutectic mixture of topical anesthetics (EMLA cream) on pain responses of preschoolers during venipuncture. The pain responses were reported by children, nurses, and the children’s mothers. The pre- and post-test-designed study, which included a non-equivalent control group, was carried out in a pediatric unit at E University Hospital in South Korea. Pain responses during venipuncture were measured by the self-reporting of the children using the Face Pain Rating Scale (FPRS), the Procedure Behavior Checklist by nurses (PBCL), the Visual Analog Scale (VAS) by mothers, in addition to measurements of the children’s pulse rate and level of oxygen saturation. EMLA cream was effective in decreasing the pain responses of the children as assessed by FPRS, PBCL, and VAS scores. However, pulse rate and level of oxygen saturation of the children during venipuncture were not significantly different between the two groups. EMLA cream could be a useful option for reducing pain in preschool children during invasive procedures.
