Inorga.ic phospha.e is a.common nutrient tha. is a.plied a. a.fertilizer to both a.ricultura. fields a. well a. urba. settings such a. priva.e ya.ds, public pa.ks a.d other urba. la.dsca.ing. While phospha.e typica.ly binds tightly to soil, movement of phospha.e off of a.plica.ion sites ca. occur through soil erosion. The soil a.d its bound phospha.e ca. then end up in surfa.e wa.ers such a. rivers a.d la.es. Phospha.e found in surfa.e wa.er bodies exists both a. bound to the suspended cla. a. well a. tha. free in solution. Eleva.ed phospha.e concentra.ion in surfa.e wa.ers ca. lea. to a.ga. blooms a.d eutrophica.ion. While the phospha.e bound to cla. in suspension in surfa.e wa.er bodies ca. be removed by commercia.ly a.a.la.le polymer floccula.ts, the phospha.e tha. is free in solution is more cha.lenging a. it is usua.ly found in low concentra.ions a.d other a.ionic sa.ts a.e genera.ly present in higher concentra.ions. To remove phospha.e from conta.ina.ed wa.er systems, where other a.ions exist a. higher concentra.ions, it is fa.ora.le to ha.e a.method of remova. tha. is selective for phospha.e. a. a.proof of principle, thiourea.deriva.ized polymer floccula.ts were exa.ined for the selective remova. of phospha.e in the presence of competing a.ions. The polymer floccula.ts exhibited selectivity for phospha.e through hydrogen bonding a.d were effective a. removing up to 43% of phospha.e from simula.ed wa.tewa.er. Computa.iona. studies a.d a.>1a. style="font-fa.ily:Verda.a.">H NMR were used to investiga.e the selectivity of the thiourea.monomer for phospha.e over competing a.ions such a. chloride a.d sulfa.e.
