In this study,computational fluid dynamics(CFD)was used to design the geometry of a new velocity sensor for measuring open channel *** sensor determined velocity by observing the travel of dye carried in the *** of this design required the development of fluid dynamics models to determine potential errors in fluid velocity measurement due to velocity changes caused by intrusion of the sensor in the *** also required an analysis technique to determine the expected sensor response to the flow fields that resulted from the CFD *** models were then used to improve the geometry of the sensor to minimize the measurement *** with a simple design for the sensor geometry,the CFD analysis modeled the open channel flow around the sensor as turbulent using both the k-ωand k-εReynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes(RANS)turbulence *** model predicted that the original sensor design would underestimate the free-stream velocities of open channels by 7.9%to 2.0%across a range from 0.1 m/s to 5.0 m/*** using CFD to improve the sensor design,the velocity measurement error was limited to less than 4%across the same velocity range.

Background Although previous studies using Korean data have already reported higher rates of mortality in women, it is less clear whether these gender differences in prognosis post ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction （STEMI）, are age dependent. The aim of this study is to examine the gender-age interaction with early and late mortality in patients with STEMI enrolled in the Korean nationwide regis-try. Methods This prospective study stratified outcomes according to gender and age from 17,021 STEMI patients. We compared in-hospital, early （30 days） and late （12 months） mortality between gender to examine the gender-age interaction in multivariable models. Results In younger women （〈 60 years）, in-hospital [5.8% vs. 2.5%, P 〈 0.001; unadjusted odds ratios （OR）： 2.41, 95% confidence inter-vals （CI）： 1.59-3.66], early （6.2% vs. 2.6%, P 〈 0.001; unadjusted OR： 2.4, 95% CI： 2.12-2.72） and late mortality （7.0% vs. 3.1%, P 〉 0.001; unadjusted OR： 2.33, 95% CI： 2.08-2.61） were significantly higher compared with men. However, after adjustment for patient characteristics, Killip class ≥ 3, symptom to balloon time and major bleeding, and in-hospital bleeding, overall early and late mortality were no longer re-lated to gender in any age groups. Conclusions Among a Korean population with STEMI, higher early and late mortality in younger women may be explained by poor patient characteristics, higher Killip class ≥3, longer symptom to balloon time and more frequent major bleeding. Therefore, based on gender-age differences, more precise and aggressive preventive strategies focused on risk factor reduction, education and more intensive management for yotmger women should be performed.

A Modal Identification Algorithm Combining Blind Source Separation and State Space Realization

A modal identification algorithm is developed, combining techniques from Second Order Blind Source Separation (SOBSS) and State Space Realization (SSR) theory. In this hybrid algorithm, a set of correlation matrices is generated using time-shifted, analytic data and assembled into several Hankel matrices. Dissimilar left and right matrices are found, which diagonalize the set of nonhermetian Hankel matrices. The complex-valued modal matrix is obtained from this decomposition. The modal responses, modal auto-correlation functions and discrete-time plant matrix (in state space modal form) are subsequently identified. System eigenvalues are computed from the plant matrix to obtain the natural frequencies and modal fractions of critical damping. Joint Approximate Diagonalization (JAD) of the Hankel matrices enables the under determined (more modes than sensors) problem to be effectively treated without restrictions on the number of sensors required. Because the analytic signal is used, the redundant complex conjugate pairs are eliminated, reducing the system order (number of modes) to be identified half. This enables smaller Hankel matrix sizes and reduced computational effort. The modal auto-correlation functions provide an expedient means of screening out spurious computational modes or modes corresponding to noise sources, eliminating the need for a consistency diagram. In addition, the reduction in the number of modes enables the modal responses to be identified when there are at least as many sensors as independent (not including conjugate pairs) modes. A further benefit of the algorithm is that identification of dissimilar left and right diagonalizers preclude the need for windowing of the analytic data. The effectiveness of the new modal identification method is demonstrated using vibration data from a 6 DOF simulation, 4-story building simulation and the Heritage court tower building.

Although declining in the US due to restrictions of asbestos exposure, malignant pleura/mesothelioma （MPP） remains a very serious thoracic malignancy that is rising in incidence worldwide （1）. Trirnodality therapy with chemotherapy and radiotherapy combined with extrapleural pneumonectomy （EPP） has gained acceptance given the acceptable mortality rate （〈5%） and long term survival reported in patients with epithelial histology, negative margins, and no extrapleural lymph node involvement after trimodalitv treatment （2）.

Hepatitis C virus （HCV） infection is one of the major causes of chronic liver disease, including cirrhosis and liver cancer and is therefore, the most common indication for liver transplantation. Conventional antiviral drugs such as pegylated interferon-alpha, taken in combination with ribavirin, represent a milestone in the therapy of this disease. However, due to different viral and host factors, clinical success can be achieved only in approximately half of patients, making urgent the requirement of exploiting alternative approaches for HCV therapy. Fortunately, recent advances in the understanding of HCV viral replication and host cell interactions have opened new possibilities for therapeutic intervention. The most recent technologies, such as small interference RNA mediated gene-silencing, antisense oligonucleotides （ASO）, or viral vector based gene delivery systems, have paved the way to develop novel therapeutic modalities for HCV. In this review, we outline the application of these technologies in the context of HCV therapy. In particular, we will focus on the newly defined role of cellular microRNA （miR-222） in viral replication and discuss its potential for HCV molecular therapy.
