since the 1970's, frozen ground has been developing near the Tokyo Bay area around liquefied natural gas(LNG) inground storage tanks. For disaster prevention purposes, the tanks are constructed below the ground surface. since the temperature of the liquid stored in the tanks is -162℃ the soil surrounding the tanks freezes. since this frozen ground has existed for almost half a century, we have permafrost near Tokyo. The development of artificial frozen ground may cause frost heaving, resulting in frost heave forces that may cause structural damage of adjacent LNG in-ground storage tanks.Therefore, the demand for frozen ground engineering increased and consequently we now have advanced technology in this area. Fortunately, we use this engineering technology and artificial ground freezing for civil engineering, especially in big and crowded cities like Tokyo. This paper provides a summary of the testing apparatus, test methods, and assessment methods for frost heaving.

This paper presents the purpose,advantages,system constitution,operation method and estimation results of using hydrogen storage in a small-scale electric power(off-grid)system when renewable energy sources are introduced.It is assumed that all electricity is supplied from renewable energy sources without using a diesel generator that requires fossil fuels.In other words,for a small-scale electric power system on a remote island,a power-supply system comprising a photovoltaic power-generation system,storage battery,hydrogen-production system,storage tank and a fuel cell is considered.The condition under which the total construction cost is minimized by considering the equipment capacity,operation method of the battery and fuel cell as parameters is investigated.The results demonstrate that the construction cost can be reduced by applying the method of surplus magnification and hydrogen storage.The initial cost is~70%when hydrogen storage is added as compared with the case in which a storage battery alone is used.such a cost-effective system can contribute to Japan’s self-reliance with regard to the energy sector in the future.

In this paper, a method to posture maintenance control of 2-link object by nonprehensile two-cooperative-arm robot without compensating friction is proposed. In details, a mathematical model of the 2-link object is firstly built. Based on the model, stable regions for holding motion of nonprehensile two-cooperative-arm robot are obtained while the 2-link object is kept stable on the robot arms with static friction. Among the obtained stable regions, the robust pairs of orientation angles of the 2-link object are found. Under the robust orientation angles, a feedback control system is designed to control the arms to maintain the 2-link object's posture while it is being held or lifted up. Finally, experimental results are shown to verify the effectiveness of the proposed method.

We study the friction when a rectangular tire tread rubber block is sliding on an ice surface at different temperatures ranging from−38 to−2℃,and sliding speeds ranging from 3μm/s to 1 cm/s.At low temperatures and low sliding speeds we propose that an important contribution to the friction force is due to slip between the ice surface and ice fragments attached to the rubber surface.At temperatures above−10℃ or for high enough sliding speeds,a thin premelted water film occurs on the ice surface and the contribution to the friction from shearing the area of real contact is small.In this case the dominant contribution to the friction force comes from viscoelastic deformations of the rubber by the ice asperities.We comment on the role of waxing on the friction between skis and snow(ice particles).

Autophagy serves an innate immune function in defending the host against invading bacteria,including group A streptococcus(GAs).Autophagy is regulated by numerous host proteins,including the endogenous negative regulator calpain,a cytosolic protease.Globally disseminated serotypeM1T1 GAs strains associated with high invasive disease potential express numerous virulence factors and resist autophagic clearance.Upon in vitro infection of human epithelial cell lines with representative wild-type GAs M1T1 strain 5448(M1.5448),we observed increased calpain activation linked to a specific GAs virulence factor,the interleukin-8 protease spyCEP.Calpain activation inhibited autophagy and decreased capture of cytosolic GAs in autophagosomes.In contrast,the serotype M6 GAs strain JRs4(M6.JRs4),which is highly susceptible to host autophagy-mediated killing,expresses low levels of spyCEP and does not activate calpain.Overexpression of spyCEP in M6.JRs4 stimulated calpain activation,inhibited autophagy,and significantly decreased bacterial capture in autophagosomes.These paired loss-and gain-of-function studies reveal a novel role for the bacterial protease spyCEP in enabling GAs M1 evasion of autophagy and host innate immune clearance.

Tajima Yahei sericulture Farm,one of the four components of the UNEsCO World Heritage site Tomioka silk Mill and Related sites inscribed in 2014,was the starting point for advancements in sericulture farmhouses,emphasizing the importance of ventilation.Through Yahei’s experimentation surrounding the ideal space to breed silkworms,a new sericulture theory was invented,and a sericulture farmhouse architecture was formed.For the purpose of preserving this cultural heritage for future generations,it is important to understand the idea that led to the cultural and industrial advancement of the village of shimamura and to revise the preservation plans prepared by stakeholders.This paper will discuss the development of the sericulture theory,seiryō-iku theory,and the formation of a sericulture farmhouse architecture;describe the adaptation of former sericulture farmhouses and the surrounding landscapes in terms of the industry and environment;outline the plans and efforts for the preservation and revitalization of Tajima Yahei sericulture Farm,its surrounding area and its underlying issues;and propose a direction for future preservation plans.

How can we regulate an invasive alien species of high commercial value?Black locust(Robinia pseudoacacia L.)has a unique capacity for seed dispersal and high germination.Field surveys indicate that black locust increases its growing area with sprouting roots and the elongation of horizontal roots at a soil depth of 10 cm.Therefore,a method to regulate the development of horizontal roots could be eff ective in slowing the invasiveness of black locust.In this study,root barrier panels were tested to inhibit the growth of horizontal roots.since it is labor intensive to observe the growth of roots in the fi eld,it was investigated in a nursery setting.The decrease in secondary fl ush,an increase in yellowed leafl ets,and the height in the seedlings were measured.Installing root barrier panels to a depth of 30 cm eff ectively inhibit the growth of horizontal roots of young black locust.

Purpose： This paper aims to better understand a large number of papers in the medical domain of Alzheimer＇s disease （AD） and related diseases using the machine reading approach. Design/methodology/approach： The study uses the topic modeling method to obtain an overview of the field, and employs open information extraction to further comprehend the field at a specific fact level. Findings： several topics within the AD research field are identified, such as the Human Immunodeficiency Virus （HIV）/Acquired Immune Deficiency syndrome （AIDs）, which can help answer the question of how A1Ds/HIV and AD are very different yet related diseases. Research limitations： some manual data cleaning could improve the study, such as removing incorrect facts found by open information extraction. Practical implications： This study uses the literature to answer specific questions on a scientific domain, which can help domain experts find interesting and meaningful relations among entities in a similar manner, such as to discover relations between AD and AIDs/HIV. Origlnality/value： Both the overview and specific information from the literature are obtained using two distinct methods in a complementary manner. This combination is novel because previous work has only focused on one of them, and thus provides a better way to understand an important scientific field using data-driven methods.

The purpose of this paper is to clarify the questions concerning stimulation of the innovation and the diffusion of energy saving or low-carbon.To do so,this paper explains using two cases of Japan-energy saving innovation after the Oil shock and the eco points system.For the case after the oil shock,we explain the energy saving trend after the Oil shock and the factors statistically.Then we put forward the business model for the low-carbon economy.Furthermore,we analyze the case of the eco points system from 2009-2011 in Japan and explain the significance of the business model for diffusion of the low-carbon products.
