Purpose: The genus Pseudomonas is a ubiquitous microorganism frequently detected from immunocompromised patients. The inherent resistance to numerous antimicrobial agents contributes to the opportunistic character of this pathogen exhaustive monitoring of this pathogen is considered of critical importance to public health organizations. The reliable identification method able to distinguish genetic close Pseudomonas species is needed, because these organisms are difficult to differentiate by phenotypic or biochemical methods. The purpose of the present study was to design species-specific primers in order to identify and detect four Pseudomonas species which are frequently detected from the human oral cavities, and to investigate the distribution of these organisms in the living environment using a multiplex PCR. Methods: Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) primers were designed based on partial sequences of the rpoD gene of four Pseudomonas species. Swab samples were collected from fifty washstands, and the distribution of Pseudomonas species was investigated using a conventional PCR at genus level and a multiplex PCR at species level. Results: Multiplex PCR method developed in this study was able to distinguish four Pseudomonas species clearly. The genus Pseudomonas was detected from all samples (100%), whereas P. putida, P, aeruginosa, P. stutzeri and P. fluorescens were detected at 44%, 8%, 4% and 2% in fifty swab samples, respectively. Conclusion: Our developed one-step multiplex PCR method is accurate, specific, cost-effective, time-saving, and works without requiring DNA extraction. It was indicated that washstands were the uninhabitable environment for P. putida, P, aeruginosa, P. stutzeri and P. fluorescens.

Liver cancer is the second leading cause of cancer deaths in men worldwide,and the 6th and 7th cause of cancer deaths in men and women in developed countries.70%-90%of primary liver cancer is hepatocellular carcinoma.Hepatitis B or C viruses and chronic inflammation due to alcohol intake are the main risk factors for hepatocellular carcinoma.One of the key approaches for the early detection of hepatocellular carcinoma is to understand the specific imaging findings of liver nodules in the multi-step hepatocrcinogenesis process.In this article,we review the imaging findings of multistep hepatocarcinogenesis,with a focus on the early detection of malignant,cirrhotic nodules with CT and MRI.

BACKGROUND Primary hepatic neuroendocrine neoplasm(NEN)is a rare condition,and it is difficult to differentiate between primary and metastatic hepatic NENs.Herein,we report a case of primary hepatic NEN that initially mimicked a hemangioma but showed a gradual increase in size on long-term careful observation.CASE SUMMARY A 47-year-old woman was incidentally diagnosed with a 12-mm liver mass,suspected to be a hemangioma.Since then,regular follow-up had been carried out.Ten years later,she was referred to our institute due to the tumor(located in segment 4)having increased to 20 mm.Several imaging studies depicted no apparent extrahepatic lesion.Positron emission tomography(PET)/computed tomography exhibited significant accumulation in the mass lesion,which made us consider the possibility of malignancy.Left hepatectomy was performed.The histopathological diagnosis was neuroendocrine tumor grade 2,with somatostatin receptor 2 a/5 positivity.Postoperative somatostatin receptor scintigraphy(SRS)showed no other site,leading to the diagnosis of NEN of primary hepatic origin.The gradual growth of the hepatic NEN over 10 years suggested that it was likely to be a primary liver tumor.CONCLUSION In this case,positivity on PET and postoperative SRS may have helped determine whether the tumor was primary or metastatic.

How can we regulate an invasive alien species of high commercial value?Black locust(Robinia pseudoacacia L.)has a unique capacity for seed dispersal and high germination.Field surveys indicate that black locust increases its growing area with sprouting roots and the elongation of horizontal roots at a soil depth of 10 cm.Therefore,a method to regulate the development of horizontal roots could be eff ective in slowing the invasiveness of black locust.In this study,root barrier panels were tested to inhibit the growth of horizontal roots.Since it is labor intensive to observe the growth of roots in the fi eld,it was investigated in a nursery setting.The decrease in secondary fl ush,an increase in yellowed leafl ets,and the height in the seedlings were measured.Installing root barrier panels to a depth of 30 cm eff ectively inhibit the growth of horizontal roots of young black locust.

BACKGROUND The role of the hepatic nervous system in liver development remains unclear.We previously created functional human micro-hepatic tissue in mice by co-culturing human hepatic endodermal cells with endothelial and mesenchymal cells.However,they lacked Glisson’s sheath[the portal tract(PT)].The PT consists of branches of the hepatic artery(HA),portal vein,and intrahepatic bile duct(IHBD),collectively called the portal triad,together with autonomic nerves.AIM To evaluate the development of the mouse hepatic nervous network in the PT using immunohistochemistry.METHODS Liver samples from C57BL/6J mice were harvested at different developmental time periods,from embryonic day(E)10.5 to postnatal day(P)56.Thin sections of the surface cut through the hepatic hilus were examined using protein gene product 9.5(PGP9.5)and cytokeratin 19(CK19)antibodies,markers of nerve fibers(NFs),and biliary epithelial cells(BECs),respectively.The numbers of NFs and IHBDs were separately counted in a PT around the hepatic hilus(center)and the peripheral area(periphery)of the liver,comparing the average values between the center and the periphery at each developmental stage.NF-IHBD and NF-HA contacts in a PT were counted,and their relationship was quantified.SRYrelated high mobility group-box gene 9(SOX9),another BEC marker;hepatocyte nuclear factor 4α(HNF4α),a marker of hepatocytes;and Jagged-1,a Notch ligand,were also immunostained to observe the PT development.RESULTS HNF4αwas expressed in the nucleus,and Jagged-1 was diffusely positive in the primitive liver at E10.5;however,the PGP9.5 and CK19 were negative in the fetal liver.SOX9-positive cells were scattered in the periportal area in the liver at E12.5.The Jagged-1 was mainly expressed in the periportal tissue,and the number of SOX9-positive cells increased at E16.5.SOX9-positive cells constructed the ductal plate and primitive IHBDs mainly at the center,and SOX-9-positive IHBDs partly acquired CK19 positivity at the same period.PGP9.5-positive bodies were first found at E16

In the last five decades, attempts have been made to improve rumen fermentation and host animal nutrition through modulation of rumen microbiota. The goals have been decreasing methane production, partially inhibiting protein degradation to avoid excess release of ammonia, and activation of fiber digestion. The main approach has been the use of dietary supplements. Since growth-promoting antibiotics were banned in European countries in2006, safer alternatives including plant-derived materials have been explored. Plant oils, their component fatty acids,plant secondary metabolites and other compounds have been studied, and many originate or are abundantly available in Asia as agricultural byproducts. In this review, the potency of selected byproducts in inhibition of methane production and protein degradation, and in stimulation of fiber degradation was described in relation to their modes of action. In particular, cashew and ginkgo byproducts containing alkylphenols to mitigate methane emission and bean husks as a source of functional fiber to boost the number of fiber-degrading bacteria were highlighted. Other byproducts influencing rumen microbiota and fermentation profile were also described. Future application of these feed and additive candidates is very dependent on a sufficient, cost-effective supply and optimal usage in feeding practice.

Genome-wide Association Study Reveals that the Aquaporin NIP1;1 Contributes to Variation in Hydrogen Peroxide Sensitivity in Arabidopsis thaiiana

Hydrogen peroxide （H202） is a reactive oxygen species that affects cell signaling in various plant defense responses and induces programmed cell death. To identify the new components associated with H202 signaling and tolerance, we conducted a genome-wide association study （GWAS） on the root growth of 133 Arabidopsis thaliana accessions grown in the presence of toxic H2O2 levels. The most significant SNPs were associated with a cluster of chromosome 4 genes encoding an aquaporin NODULIN 26-LIKE INTRINSIC PROTEIN 1; 1 （NIP1;1）, an NB-ARC domain-containing disease resistance protein （AT4G19050）, and a putative membrane lipoprotein （AT4G19070）. The expression level of NIP1;1 was relatively high in A. thaliana accessions sensitive to H2O2. Additionally, overexpression of NIP1;1 in a tolerant accession （e.g., Col-0） increased the sensitivity of transgenic plants to H2O2. An in planta β-glucuronidase reporter assay revealed that variations in the NIP1;1 promoter were responsible for the differences of its expression level in H2O2-tolerant and -sensitive accessions. Cell death was extensive and H2O2 levels were high in the roots of H2O2-sensitive and NIP1;1-overexpressing accessions. Together, our results indicate that the aquaporin NIP1;1 is a key determinant of the sensitivity ofA. thaliana to H2O2, and contributes to the phenotypic variations detected by our GWAS.

Introduction In contrast to familiar developmental anomalies,such as pancreatobiliary maljunction and pancreas divisum,a double orifice of the ampulla of Vater is a much more rare congenital malformation.We encountered a patient with pancreatolithiasis associated with anatomic variation of Wirsung duct showing a single major duodenal papilla with a double orifice and no minor papilla.
