Soil properties and habitats determine the response of bacterial communities to agricultural wastewater irrigation

Increasing temperatures and variability of precipitation events due to climate change will lead in the future to higher irrigation demands in ***,the use of secondary treated wasterwater(TWW)could have consequences for the receiving soil environment and its resident microbial *** objective of this study was to characterize the importance of soil properties and habitats to the response of soil bacteria and archaea to irrigation with *** agricultural soils with contrasting textures(loamy sand or silt loam)and,for each,three variants differing in soil organic carbon and nitrogen,as generated by long-term fertilization,were *** each of these six soils,prokaryotic communities from two habitats,i.e.,root-free bulk soil and the rhizosphere of developing cucumber plants in the greenhouse,were *** were analyzed by the quantity and diversity of their polymerase chain reaction(PCR)-amplified 16S rRNA *** account for TWW-associated nutrient effects,potable water(PW)served as a *** sequence analysis showed that prokaryotic communities mainly consisted of bacteria(99.8%).Upon irrigation,regardless of the water quality,prokaryotic diversity declined,p H increased,and no bacterial growth was detected in bulk *** contrast,the growth of cucumbers was stimulated by TWW,indicating that plants were the main ***,strong responses were seen in the rhizosphere,suggesting an indirect effect of TWW by altered *** main bacterial responders to TWW were Proteobacteria,bacteroidetes,Actinobacteria,and *** in bacterial communities due to TWW were less pronounced in all variants of the silt loam,indicating the importance of clay and soil organic carbon for buffering effects of TWW on soil bacterial ***,soil organic carbon and soil texture are important parameters that need to be considered when applying TWW in agriculture.

The thermoelectric transport properties of Zr0.43Hf0.57 NiSn half-Heusler compounds were investigated for samples sintered with different spark plasma sintering(SPS)periods:8,32 and 72 *** means of scanning transmission electron microscopy with a highangular annular dark-field detector(STEm-HAADF),it was found that sintering time affected the defect concentration,namely the amount of Ni interstitial atoms,and created locally ordered inclusions of full-Heusler *** structural information,phase composition and electrical transport properties could be consistently explained by the assumption that Ni interstitials give rise to an impurity band situated about 100 meV below the bottom of the conduction band via a self-doping *** impurity band was found to merge with the conduction band for the sample with intermediate SPS *** effect was ascribed to the gradual dissolution of full-Heusler phase inclusions and production of interstitial Ni defects,which eventually vanished for the sample with the longest sintering *** was demonstrated that the modification of the density of states near the edge of the conduction band and enhanced overall charge carrier concentration provided by defect engineering led to overall 26%increase in the thermoelectric figure of merit(ZT)with respect to the other samples.

The effect of temperature on the electrical conductivity(σ)and Seebeck coefficient(S)of n-type vapor grown carbon nanofibers(CNFs)and poly(vinylidene fluoride)(PVDF)melt-mixed with 15 wt%of those CNFs is *** 40°C,the CNFs show stable n-type character(S=-4.8μV·K^(-1))with anσof ca.165 S·m^(-1),while the PVDF/CNF composite film shows anσof ca.9 S·m^(-1)and near-zero S(S=-0.5μV·K^(-1)).This experimental reduction in S is studied by the density functional tight binding(DFTb)method revealing a contact electron transfer from the CNFs to the PVDF in the ***,in the temperature range from 40°C to 100°C,theσ(T)of the CNFs and PVDF/CNF film,successfully described by the 3D variable range hopping(VRH)model,is explained as consequence of a thermally activated backscattering *** the contrary,the S(T)from 40°C to 100°C of the PVDF/CNF film,which satisfactorily matches the model proposed for some multi-walled carbon nanotube(mWCNT)doped mats;however,it does not follow the increase in S(T)found for *** these findings are presented with the aim of discerning the role of these n-type vapor grown carbon nanofibers on theσand S of their melt-mixed polymer composites.

Simulating small-scale climate change effects-lessons from a short-term field manipulation experiment on grassland arthropods

Climate change is expected to cause major consequences on biodiversity. Understanding species-specific reactions, such as species shifts, species declines, and changes in population dynamics is a key issue to quantify large-scale impacts of climate change on biotic communities. As it is often impossible or at least impracticable to conduct large-scale experiments on biotic responses to climate change, studies at a smaller scale may be a useful alternative. In our study, we therefore tested responses of grassland arthropods （carabid beetles, spiders, grasshoppers） to simulated climate change in terms of species activity densities and diversity. We conducted a controlled field experiment by changing water and microclimatic conditions at a small scale （16 m2）. Roof constructions were used to increase drought-like conditions, whereas water supply was enhanced by irrigation. In all, 2 038 carabid beetles （36 species）, 4 893 spiders （65 species）, and 303 Orthoptera （4 species） were caught using pitfall traps from may to August, 2010. During our experiment, we created an artificial small-scale climate change; and statistics revealed that these changes had short-term effects on the total number of individuals and Simpson diversity of the studied arthropod groups. moreover, our results showed that certain species might react very quickly to climate change in terms of activity densities, which in turn might influence diversity due to shifts in abundance patterns. Finally, we devised methodological improvements that may further enhance the validity of future studies.

Collision statistics of clusters:from Poisson model to Poisson mixtures

Clusters traverse a gas and collide with gas particles. The gas particles are absorbed, and the clusters become hosts. If the clusters are size-selected, the number of guests will be Poisson distributed. We review this by showcasing four laboratory procedures that all rely on the validity of the Poisson model. The effects of a statistical distribution of the clusters＇ sizes in a beam of clusters are discussed. We derive the average collision rates. Additionally, we present Poisson mixture models that also involve standard deviations. We derive the collision statistics for common size distributions of hosts and also for some generalizations thereof. The models can be applied to large noble gas clusters traversing doping gas. While outlining how to fit a generalized Poisson to the statistics, we still find even these Poisson models to be often insufficient.

Using resistance distance from circuit theory to model dispersal through habitat corridors
