Water oxidation electrocatalysis with iron oxide nanoparticles prepared via laser ablation

Iron oxide nanoparticles（FeOx NPs, 5–30 nm size） prepared via laser ablation in liquid were supported onto Indium Tin Oxide conductive glass slides by magnetophoretic deposition（MD） technique. The resulting Fe O x@ITO electrodes are characterized by a low amount of iron coverage of 16–50 nmol/cm^2,and show electrocatalytic activity towards water oxidation in neutral phosphate buffer pH 7 with 0.58 V overpotential and quantitative Faradaic efficiency towards oxygen production. XPS analysis on the oxygen region of the FeOx films reveals a substantial hydration of the surface after catalysis, recognized as a crucial step to access reactivity.

chronic infections due to hepatitis B and hepatitis c viruses are responsible for most cases of hepatocellular carcinoma(Hcc)worldwide,and this association is likely to remain during the next ***,viral hepatitis-related Hcc imposes an important burden on public health in terms of disability-adjusted life *** order to reduce such a burden,some major challenges must be *** vaccination against hepatitis B virus,especially in the neonatal period,is probably the most relevant primary preventive measure against the development of ***,considering the large adult population already infected with hepatitis B and c viruses,it is also imperative to identify these individuals to ensure their access to *** hepatitis B and c currently have highly effective therapies,which are able to diminish the risk of development of liver ***,it is essential for individuals at high-risk of Hcc to be included in surveillance programs,so that tumors are detected at an early *** with hepatitis B or c and advanced liver fibrosis or cirrhosis benefit from being followed in a surveillance *** hepatitis B virus is oncogenic and capable of leading to liver cancer even in individuals with early stages of liver fibrosis,other high-risk groups of patients with hepatitis B are also candidates for *** effort is required concerning these strategies in order to decrease the incidence and the mortality of viral hepatitis-related Hcc.

Multiple sclerosis is an autoimmune treatable but not curable *** are a multiplicity of medications for multiple sclerosis therapy,including a class entitled disease-modifying drugs that are mainly indicated to reduce the number and severity of disease *** all patients respond well to these therapies,and minor to severe adverse effects have been *** D,called sunshine vitamin,is being studied as a possible light at the end of the *** this review,we recapitulated the similar immunopathogenesis of multiple sclerosis and experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis,the immunomodulatory and neuroprotective potential of vitamin D and the state-of-art concerning its supplementation to multiple sclerosis ***,based on our and other groups’experimental findings,we analyzed the need to consider the relevance of the route and the different time-point administration aspects for a more rational indication of this vitamin to multiple sclerosis patients.

AIM： to compare the feasibility and patients＇ tolerance of esophagogastroduodenoscopy （EGD） using a thin endoscope with those of conventional oral EGD and to determine the optimal route of introduction of smallcaliber endoscopes. METHODS： One hundred and sixty outpatients referred for diagnostic EGD were randomly allocated to 3 groups： conventional （c）-EGD （9.8 mm in diameter）, transnasal （TN）-EGD and transoral （TO）-EGD （5.9 mm in diameter）. Pre-EGD anxiety was measured using a 100-mm visual analogue scale （VAS）. After EGD, patients and endoscopists completed a questionnaire on the pain, nausea, choking, overall discomfort, and quality of the examination either using VAS or answering some questions. The duration of EGD was timed. Blood oxygen saturation （SaO2） and heart rate （HR） were monitored during EGD. RESULTS： Twenty-one patients refused to participate in the study. The 3 groups were well-matched for age, gender, experience with EGD, and anxiety. EGD was completed in 91.1% （41/45）, 97.5% （40/41）, and 96.2% （51/53） of cases in TN-EGD, TO-EGD, and c-EGD groups, respectively. TN-EGD lasted longer （3.11 ± 1.60 min） than TO-EGD （2.25 ± 1.45 min） and c-EGD （2.49 ± 1.64 rain）（P 〈 0.05）. The overall tolerance was higher （P 〈 0.05） and the overall discomfort was lower （P 〈 0.05） in TN-EGD group than in c-EGD group. EGD was tolerated ＂better than expected＂ in 73.2% of patients in TN-EGD group and 55% and 39.2% of patients in TO-EGD and c-EGD groups, respectively （P 〈 0.05）. Endoscopy was tolerated ＂worst than expected＂ in 4.9% of patients in TN-EGD group and 17.5% and 23.5% of patients in TO- EGD and c-EGD groups, respectively （P 〈 0.05）. TN-EGD caused mild epistaxis in one case, The ability to insuffiate air, wash the lens, and suction of the thin endoscope were lower than those of conventional instrument （P 〈 0,001）, All biopsies performed were adequate for histological assessment. cONcLUSION： Diagnostic TN-EGD is better tolerated than c-EGD, Narrow-diameter end

AIM:To investigate the usefulness of mild iron depletion and the factors predictive for histological improvement following phlebotomy in caucasians with chronic hepatitis c(cHc). METHODS:We investigated 28 cHc caucasians with persistently elevated serum aminotransferase levels and non responders to,or unsuitable for,antiviral therapy who underwent mild iron depletion(ferritin≤70 ng/mL) by long-term *** improvement,as defined by at least one point reduction in the staging score or,in case of unchanged stage,as at least two points reduction in the grading score(Knodell),was evaluated in two subsequent liver biopsies(before and at the end of phlebotomy,48±16 mo apart).RESULTS:Phlebotomy showed an excellent safety *** improvement occurred in 12/28 phlebotomized *** males responded to *** univariate logistic analysis alcohol intake(P=0.034),high histological grading(P=0.01) and high hepatic iron concentration(HIc)(P=0.04) before treatment were associated with histological *** logistic analysis showed that in males high HIc was the only predictor of histological improvement following phlebotomy(OR=1.41, 95%cI:1.03-1.94,P=0.031).Accordingly,12 out of 17(70%)patients with HIc≥20μmol/g showed histological improvements at the second biopsy. cONcLUSION:Male cHc caucasian non-responders to antiviral therapy with low-grade iron overload can benefit from mild iron depletion by long-term phlebotomy.

Histological and Morphological Study of the Intestines of Wistar Rat Fetuses in a Modified Gastroschisis Experimental Model

In gastroschisis (G), the lesion degree of exposed intestinal segments is related to the time of its contact with the amniotic fluid (AF) and exposure to meconium which is the cause of intestinal morphological and histological alterations. The outcome of these alterations is intestinal hypoperistalsis and nutrient absorption deficiency, which contribute to increased morbidity and high medical-hospital costs. In this study, morphological and histological intestine alterations were identified at two different contact occasions with AF. Experimental gastroschisis (G) was performed on Wistar rat fetuses at a single gestational age on day 18.5th. The fetuses were removed on the 20.5th (G-1) and 21.5th days (G-2). Fetuses of both groups were divided in 3 sub-groups: control (c), gastroschisis (G) and sham (S). Measurements were taken of the Whole Set including fetus, placenta and membranes with AF (WS), fetus body weight (BW), intestinal weight (IW) and their diameters (DI). The objective of the present study is to test a new gastroschisis experimental model and identify differences in morphological and histological alterations in these two gestational periods that may be directly related to intestinal motility disorders in G. The WS and BW presented no significant statistical difference when compared G1 and G2. The results of the intestine average weight of G2 fetuses were significantly higher when compared to G1 fetuses in all subgroups (c: p = 0.02;G: p = 0.01;S: p = 0.02, Mann Whitney). The results of the intestinal average diameters (D/d) in G1 and G2 presented significant statistical difference only in G subgroup (p Kruskal Wallis). When compared intestinal average diameters, there was significant statistical difference of G fetuses in G1 and G2 (p Mann Whitney). The present study evaluates the possible modes of action of antagonistic bacteria and their tolerance to UV radiation, temperature and osmotic stress. The partial 16S-23S rRNA gene sequencing of eight antagonistic bacteria had a high match with three bacterial genera: curtobacterium, Pantoea and Bacillus. In this study, the three Bacillus isolates showed the most relevant production of enzymes, volatile organic compounds and antibiosis against Exserohilum turcicum. Respect to UV radiation and temperature Pantoea and Bacillus isolates were more tolerant;whereas the eight isolates were tolerant to osmotic stress in varying degree. The three Bacillus isolates have the greatest potential as biocontrol agents for foliar diseases in maize. The antagonistic action could be explained through different modes of action such as enzymes, volatile organic compounds and/or direct antibiosis by other secondary metabolites. Bacillus isolates tolerance to environmental stresses including UV radiation, temperature and osmotic stress is relevant for survival and persistence on the leaf surface. This work provides new information about the mode of action of antagonistic bacteria with proven efficacy against maize leaf pathogens. In addition, it provides information about the tolerance of antagonistic bacteria against different stress conditions. The data of the present study could contribute to the development of a successful foliar biofungicide.

The ripening of climacteric fruits,such as apple,is represented by a series of genetically programmed events orchestrated by the action of several *** this study,we investigated the existence of a hormonal crosstalk between ethylene and auxin during the post-harvest ripening of three internationally known apple cultivars:‘Golden Delicious',‘Granny Smith'and‘Fuji'.The normal climacteric ripening was impaired by the exogenous application of 1-methylcyclopropene(1-McP)that affected the production of ethylene and the physiological behaviour of specific ethylene-related quality traits,such as fruit texture and the production of volatile organic *** application of 1-McP induced,moreover,a de-novo accumulation of *** RNA-Seq wide-transcriptome analysis evidenced as the competition at the level of the ethylene receptors induced a cultivar-dependent transcriptional *** DEGs annotation carried out through the KEGG database identified as most genes were assigned to the plant hormone signaling transduction category,and specifically related to auxin and *** interplay between these two hormones was further assessed through a candidate gene analysis that highlighted a specific activation of GH3 and ILL genes,encoding key steps in the process of the auxin homeostasis *** results showed that a compromised ethylene metabolism at the onset of the climacteric ripening in apple can stimulate,in a cultivar-dependent fashion,an initial de-novo synthesis and de-conjugation of auxin as a tentative to restore a normal ripening progression.
