Potential of guar gum as a leaky gut model in broilers:Digestibility,performance,and microbiota responses

Diet is a major modulator of animal resilience and its three pillars:host's immune response,gut microbiota,and intestinal *** the present study,we endeavour to delineate a challenging con-dition aimed to degrade these pillars and elucidate its impact on broiler performance and nutrient *** attain this objective,we opted to use guar gum(GG)as a source of galactomannan.A series of three in vivo experiments were conducted employing conventional or semi-purified diets,supple-mented with or without GG during the grower phase(14-28 d).Our findings demonstrate a substantial decline in animal performance metrics such as body weight(reduced by 29%,P<0.001),feed intake(decreased by 12%,P<0.001),and feed conversion ratio(up to 58%increase,P<0.001)in the presence of GG at 2%.The supplementation of a semi-purified diet with incremental doses of GG resulted in a linear reduction(P<0.001)in the apparent total tract digestibility of dry matter and apparent metabolisable ***,a marked reduction in ileal endogenous losses,as well as apparent and standardised digestibility of all amino acids with varying proportions(P<0.05),was *** alterations were accompanied by disrupted gut integrity assessed by fluorescein isothiocyanate-dextran(FITC-d)(P<0.001)as well as an inflammatory status characterised by elevated levels of acute-phase proteins,namely orosomucoid and serum amyloid A in the sera(P=0.03),and increased mRNA expression levels of IL-1,IL-6,IL-8,Inos,and K203 genes in the ileum,along with a decrease in IgA levels in the gut lumen(P<0.05).Microbial ecology and activity were characterised by reduced diversity and richness(Shannon index,P=0.005)in the presence of ***,our results revealed diminished levels of short-chain fatty acids(P=0.01)and their producer genera,such as Clostridium_XIVa and Blautia,in the gut caeca,coupled with excessive accumulation of lactate(17-fold increase,P<0.01)in the presence of GG at 2%.In addition

Controlling various contaminants in wastewater effluent through membranes and engineered wetland

For effective wastewater reclamation and water recovery,the treatment of natural and effluent organic matters(NOM and EfOM),toxic anions,and micropollutants was considered in this *** different NOM(humic acid of the Suwannee River,and NOM of US and Youngsan River,Korea),and one EfOM from the Damyang wastewater treatment plant,Korea,were selected for investigating the removal efficiencies of tight nanofiltration(NF)and ultrafiltration(UF)membranes with different ***,bromate,and perchlorate were selected as target toxic anions due to their well known high ***-(2-chloroethyl)-phosphate(TCEP),oxybenzone,and caffeine,due to their different K_(ow) and pK_(a) values,were selected as target *** expected,the NF membranes provided high removal efficiencies in terms of all the tested contaminants,and the UF membrane provided fairly high removal efficiencies for anions(except for nitrate)and the relatively hydrophobic micropollutant,*** the wetlands,nitrate was successfully ***,a fair process of combining membranes with an engineered wetland could be proposed for sustainable wastewater reclamation and optimum control of contaminats.

Effects of chronic smoking on color vision in young subjects

AIM: To evaluate the effects of chronic smoking on color vision in young ***: This study included 91 smokers and 88non-smokers(a total of 179 volunteers) without any ophthalmologic and systemical disorders. The subjects were between 18-40 years of age with a best corrected visual acuity(BCVA) of 20/20, normal anterior and posterior segment examinations and normal intraocular pressure. The color vision of the subjects were evaluated with Farnsworth-Munsell 100 Hue test(FMHT). The total error scores and axis calculation were performed for each subject and the results ***: Mean age and the standard deviation was28±5y in the smokers group, and 26.7±5.5y in the control group(P =0.101). Sex distribution was similar in the two groups(P =0.365). There was no significant correlation between age and FMHT total error scores(P =0.069).Median of FMHT total error scores of smokers and non-smokers were 65 and 50.50, respectively. FMHT total error scores was found significantly higher in smokers than non-smokers(P =0.004). There was no statisticaly significant difference between smoker and non-smoker groups with respect to axis ratio calculation(P =0.611).There was no significant correlation with FMHT total error scores with neither smoking duration nor number of cigarettes smoked per day(P =0.405, P =0.454,respectively).· CONCLUSION: This study suggested that chronic smoking affects the color vision of young smokers but this may not be sector selective.

Recurrent anterior shoulder instability: Review of the literature and current concepts

The purpose of this review article is to discuss the clinical spectrum of recurrent traumatic anterior shoulder instability with the current concepts and controversies at the scientific level. Because of increasing participation of people from any age group of the population in sports activities, health care professionals dealing with the care of trauma patients must have a thorough understanding of the anatomy, patho-physiology, risk factors, and management of anterior shoulder instability. The risk factors for recurrent shoulder dislocation are young age, participation in high demand contact sports activities, presence of Hill-Sachs or osseous Bankart lesion, previous history of ipsilateral traumatic dislocation, ipsilateral rotator cuff or deltoid muscle insufficiency, and underlying ligamentous laxity. Achieving the best result for any particular patient depends onthe procedure that allows observation of the joint surfaces, provides the anatomical repair, maintains range of motion, and also can be applied with low rates of complications and recurrence. Although various surgical techniques have been described, a consensus does not exist and thus, orthopedic surgeons should follow and try to improve the current evidence-based treatment modalities for the patients.
