Pomegranate rind is abundantly available as a waste material. Pomegranate Rind Extract (PRE) can be applied to cotton fabrics for its natural colours, as a mordanting agent and also for imparting certain functional properties such as fire retardancy and antimicrobial properties. This paper reviews the feasibility of Pomegranate Rind Extract to improve the functional properties of cellulosic fabrics. Studies show that varying concentrations and higher temperatures that were used to apply the extract on the fabric, resulted in enhanced functional properties. At a particular concentration, the treated fabric showed a 15 times lower burning rate in comparison with the control fabric. Also, antimicrobial efficacy has been observed against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. Due to the natural colouring material, it can be used as a natural dye on cotton material. The fire retardancy of pomegranate rind extract was tested on jute material under varying alkalinity. Research has indicated that pomegranate rind extract could be used to dye polyamide as well. The rubbing and wash fastness of the finished fabrics is good. The light fastness was fair, and its antibacterial efficiency against tested bacteria was good.

Context: Positron emission tomography is a nuclear medicine imaging that deals with physiological function using radioisotopes. With the most PET (Positron Emission Tomography) scanners in integration with the CT scanners of late, this technology has registered phenomenal growth. The small amount of radioactive material is called Radiotracers. Objective: Like 18F- Fluro-deoxy-2-glucose has widely used. In this article, the author introduced clinical applications of PET out of 25 patients who studied hypermetabolic lesions in lymph nodes. Methods: PET imaging is coincidence imaging which is different from the other imaging technique PET image formed from multiple rings of detector crystals. Each decay positron travel in tissue annihilation reaction is going on. FDG is the most commonly used radiotracer to detect and stage various types of malignancies. Result: The field of PET/CT imaging cares for many oncology patients. PET improved localization of malignant lesions. It improved staging biopsy and therapy. Conclusion: Finally, studies to data showed 4% to 10% improvement in the overall accuracy of staging/restaging in lesions. If we use Monte Carlo simulation, OLINDA/EXM software may improve further with widely used.

Wound healing activity of aqueous extract of Crotalaria verrucosa in Wistar albino rats

Objective:To evaluate the wound healing effect of aqueous extract of Crotalaria verrucosa(C. verrucosa) in rats.Methods:Three wound models including incision,excision and dead space wounds were used in this study.The parameters studied were breaking strength in incision models,granulation tissue dry weight,breaking strength and hydroxyproline content in dead space wounds,percentage of wound contraction and period of epithelialization in excision wound model.Results:Two doses of the extract with and without dexamethasone showed significant increases in mean hydroxyproline,total protein content and dry weight of granulation tissue but it was higher with dose 800 mg/kg comparing with the control.The dexamethasone treated group showed a significant(P<0.001) reduction in the wound breaking strength when compared to control group in incision type of wound model.Coadministration of C.verrucosa with dexamethasone significantly(P<0.001) increased the breaking strength compared to the dexamethasone treated only group.In excision wound model,the percentage of the wound contraction was significantly(P<0.01) increased by two doses of test extract on all the days except the lower dose which exhibited only on 12th,16th days of drug treatment and it also reversed the dexamethasone suppressed wound contraction.It significantly(P<0.001) reduced the time required for epithelialization and reversed the epithelialization delaying effect of dexamethasone (P<0.001).Conclusions:C.verrucosa was found to possess significant wound healing property. This was evident by decrease in the period of epithelialization,increase in the rate of wound contraction,skin breaking strength,and granulation tissue dry weight content.Hence C. verrucosa could be a good wound healing agent.

Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) are used to sense certain parameters in an environment, manipulate the acquired data and transmit/receive the information in an intra or inter communication network. Innovative researches in WSNs have resulted in the increase of application scenarios, which, at a time instant, were not even well-thought-of to be automated by WSNs. With this advent, it becomes necessary to customize sensor nodes depending on node specific characteristics and the deployment environment. Challenges for designing a WSN depend on the scenario in which it is implemented. Commercially available wireless motes are mostly generalized for usage in most of the applications. This survey work aims to provide an insight on the various wireless motes available in the market. This will enhance future researchers to select wireless modules which might be most suitable for their application needs. Various parameters related to the technical and implementation characteristics of WSNs were considered in this survey. This survey also concentrates with the survey on individual RF modules based on certain parameters like frequency of operation, transmission power, receiver sensitivity, interface mechanism, data rate, active, sleep & power-down current consumptions, range and cost involved.

Value of multi-disciplinary input into laparoscopic management of rectal cancer-An observational study

AIM To assess the impact of multi-disciplinary teams(MDTs)management in optimising the outcome for rectal cancers.METHODS We undertook a retrospective review of a prospectively maintained database of patients with rectal cancers(defined as tumours≤15 cm from anal verge)discussed at our MDT between Jan 2008 and Jan 2011.The data was validated against the national database to ensure completeness of dataset.The clinical course and follow-up data was validated using the institution’s electronic patient records.The data was analysed in terms of frequencies and percentages.Significance of any differences were analysed usingχ2 test.A Kaplan-Meier analysis was performed for overall survival and disease free survival.RESULTS Following appropriate staging,one hundred and thirtythree patients were suitable for potentially curative resections.Seventy two(54%)were upper rectal cancer(URC)-tumour was>6 cm from the anal verge and 61(46%)were lower rectal cancers(LRC)-lower extent of the tumour was palpable≤6 cm.Circumferential resection margin(CRM)appeared threatened on preoperative MRI in 19/61(31%)patients with LRC requiring neo-adjuvant therapy(NAT).Of the 133 resections,118(89%)were attempted laparoscopically(5%conversion rate).CRM was positive in 9(6.7%)patients;Median lymph node harvest was 12(2-37).Major complications occurred in 8(6%)patients.Median follow-up was 53 mo(0-82).The 90-d mortality was 2(1.5%).Over the followup period,disease related mortality was 11(8.2%)and overall mortality was 39(29.3%).Four(3%)patients had local recurrence and 22(16.5%)patients had distant metastases.CONCLUSION Management of rectal cancers can be optimized with multidisciplinary input to attain acceptable long-term oncological outcomes even when incorporating a laparoscopic approach to rectal cancer resection.

Pyometra is one of the most common uterine pathologies of intact bitch at middle to advanced age. In the early stages, the disease shows subtle changes, making diagnosis a challenge. In contrast, at later stages, it manifests as potentially life-threatening systemic inflammatory response syndrome. Ultrasonographic examination of the uterus aids in the diagnosis, although it has limitation in ascertaining the clinical severity of pyometra. Moreover, differentiation of cystic endometrial hyperplasia from pyometra could not be discerned with greater accuracy. Therefore, false negative diagnosis of pyometra patients leads to development of systemic inflammatory response, which delays administration of therapies and results in deaths during early course of treatment. Further, indiscriminate use of broad-spectrum antimicrobials at higher dose in false positive cases considerably contributes to the rising pool of drug resistant pathogens, thereby increasing the risk of case fatality due to sepsis in a long-term. Monitoring the circulating pro-inflammatory cytokines, acute phase proteins, endotoxin, growth factors and inflammatory mediators is the current trend in pyometra research, especially for developing diagnostic and prognostic biomarkers. The present review deals with the prospects of developing diagnostic and prognostic biomarkers in the canine pyometra.

Molybdenum disulfide-graphene van der Waals heterostructures as stable and sensitive electrochemical sensing platforms

Atomic layers are sought after for molecular sensing due to their available high surface interaction area,and different types of monolayers are attempted for sensing in the recent past.However,their chemical stability towards these molecules is questioned in recent times and alternate methods need to be developed to circumvent such issues,while maintaining high sensitivity.Here,the van der Waals(vdWs)stacks of molybdenum disulfide(MoS_(2))and graphene are shown for their stable electrochemical sensing towards ascorbic acid(AA)and dopamine(DA)-two important biomolecules.AA is known to chemically react with MoS_(2) leading to unstable sensing platform,while here the graphene coverage is shown to protect the MoS_(2) even from low-energy plasma exposure while keeping the same high sensitivity.Upon proving the graphene-based protection of the sensor,such a sensing platform is shown for its applicability in DA sensing,where it is found to give a linear response in a wide range of concentrations(2.5 to 600μmol·L^(−1))and even selective sensing in the presence of AA.Such a stack is found to be not merely giving protection to the beneath MoS_(2) layer but also the inter-layer charge transfer due to work function differences being beneficial in bringing fast and high sensitivity to the next-generation sensors and point-of-care devices.

Detection of blaNDM-1 and Genetic Relatedness in Clinical Isolates of Escherichia coli Producing Extended Spectrum β-Lactamase from Tertiary Care Centres in South India

Background: Extended spectrum β-lactamases (ESBL) producing E. coli co-producing other β-lactamases and exhibiting co-resistance to different antibiotic classes continue to emerge as a threat to clinical field. This study aimed to analyze the co-production of New Delhi metallo-β-lactamase-1 (blaNDM-1) in ESBL producing plasmid-bearing clinical isolates collected from two tertiary care centres in Kerala, South India, and to understand their genetic relatedness. Methods: Antibiotic resistance phenotypes of 44 clinical isolates were determined by disc-diffusion method. Plasmid-bearing isolates, detected by the alkaline-lysis method, which also tested positive for ESBL production, were screened for the presence of blaNDM-1 by polymerase chain reaction. Plasmid, random amplified polymorphic DNA profiles and blaNDM-1 sequence-based phylogenetic tree were analyzed to understand the genotypic similarities among the isolates. Results: Beta-lactam antibiotics, quinolones, cephalosporins, used in this study, and AZM were found to be ineffective against the isolates as significantly high number of isolates were resistant to these antibiotics (P < 0.01). Plasmid bearing isolates constituted 57% (n = 25), all of which were found to be ESBL producers. blaNDM-1 amplicons were noticed in four (16%) isolates and these DNA sequences showed homology between them and with similar sequences reported from other countries like Japan and Korea. Plasmid and RAPD profiles demonstrated that most of the isolates, including those harbouring blaNDM-1 shared genetic similarities as well as an apparent geographical distinctiveness. Conclusion: The predominance of ESBL production and the occurrence of blaNDM-1 in plasmid-bearing isolates observed in our study corroborate the worldwide drug-resistance scenario. This study thus warrants the need for constant surveillance in the face of sparse information available in Kerala State on the emerging drug resistance in clinical bacteria.

Soil Properties of a Tropical Savannah in the Eastern Ghats of India

As an outcome of globalization and liberalization of economic policies, exploration for and mining of minerals have become one of the recent lucrative trades in India. Due to stringent environment legislations, reclamation and reforestation of the mined out sites have become obligatory. Information on distribution of nutrients before and after mining provides valuable insights while developing and executing the strategy for reclamation and revegetation of the mined out sites. Successful mine reclamation plan chiefly requires information on the soil characteristics in the area during its natural state. With this aim, investigations into spatial and temporal variations in soil nutrients and other physico-chemical parameters among three proposed bauxite mine locations near Araku valley, India were conducted. Soil samples were collected every three months for two years. At each location, samples from three sites in triplicates from four successive layers (0 - 5 cm, 5 - 10 cm, 10 - 15 cm and 15 - 20 cm depth) were collected. Concentrations of Total Organic Carbon (TOC), Total Nitrogen (TN), Total Available Phosphorous (TAP), Total Available Sulphur (TAS), C:N, C:P, and C:S decreased along the soil layers, while N:P increased. All the parameters studied varied significantly among months (GLM-ANOVA, P 0.05). Principal Component Analysis (PCA) done on the soil physico-chemical dataset showed first 5 components (Eigen Value > 1) explaining 87.3% of the total variance. Of these, the first component accounted for 21.0% and the second for 20.1% of the total variance. The principal components represented C:N/Soil N, C:P/Soil P/N:P, EC, Soil S/C:S and Soil C axes, respectively.
