Determining bioclimatic space of Himalayan alder for agroforestry systems in Nepal

Himalayan alder species are proven to be very useful in traditional as well as contemporary agroforestry practice. These nitrogen-fixing trees are also useful in the land restoration. Therefore, understanding the distribution of Himalayan alder and the potential zone for plantation is meaningful in the agroforestry sector. Suitable climatic zones of Alnus spp. were modelled in Max Ent software using a subset of least correlated bioclimatic variables for current conditions(1950 -2000), topographic variables(DEM derived) and Landuse Landcover(LULC) data. We generated several models and selected the best model against random models using ANOVA and t-test. The environmental variables that best explained the current distribution of the species were identified and used to project into the future. For future projections, ensemble scenarios of climate change projection derived from the results of 19 Earth System Models(ESM) were used. Our model revealed that the most favorable conditions for Alnus nepalensis are in central Nepal in the moist north-west facing slope, whereas for Alnus nitida they are in western *** major climatic factor that contributes to Alnus species distribution in Nepal appears to be precipitation during the warmest quarter for A. nepalensis and precipitation during the driest quarter for A. nitida. Future projections revealed changes in the probability distribution of these species, as well as where they need conservation and where they can be planted. Also, our model predicts that the distribution of Alnus spp. in hilly regions will remain unchanged, and therefore may represent sites that can be used to revitalize traditional agroforestry systems and extract source material for land restoration.

The ascorbic acid(AA)is a biomarker that can be used to detect the symptoms of severe disorders such as scurvy,Parkinson’s,Alzheimer’s,and cardiovascular *** this work,a simple and effective sensor model is developed to diagnose the presence of AA *** develop the sensor,a tapered single-mode optical fiber has been used with the well-known phenomenon of localized surface plasmon resonance(LSPr).For LSPr,the tapered region is immobilized with synthesized gold nanoparticles(AuNPs)and zinc oxide nanoparticles(ZnO-NPs)whose absorbance peak wavelengths appear at 519nm and 370nm,*** the basis of nanoparticles(NPs)configurations,two different biosensor probes are *** the first one,the sensing region is immobilized with AuNPs and named Probe *** the second probe,the immobilized layer of AuNPs is further coated with a layer of ZnO-NPs,and a resultant probe is termed as Probe *** characterizations of synthesized AuNPs and developed fiber probes are done by the ultraviolet-visible(UV-vis)spectrophotometer,high-resolution transmission electron microscope(Hr-TEM),atomic force microscopy(AFM),and scanning electron microscope(SEM).To enhance the selectivity,a sensing region of probes is functionalized with ascorbate oxidase enzyme that oxidizes the AA in the presence of *** response of developed sensor probes is authenticated by sensing the samples of AA in the range from 500 nM to 1 mM,which covers the range of AA found in human bodies,i.e.,40μM-120μ*** performance analysis of the developed sensor probes has been done in terms of their stability,reproducibility,reusability,and *** observe the stability of AA,a pH-test has also been done that results in a better solubility of AA molecules in phosphate-buffered saline(PBS)solution.

YFa and analogs:Investigation of opioid receptors in smooth muscle contraction

AIM:To study the pharmacological profile and inhibition of smooth muscle contraction by YFa and its analogs in conjunction with their receptor selectivity. METHODS:The effects of YFa and its analogs (D-Ala2) YFa, Y (D-Ala2) GFMKKKFMrF amide and Des-Phe-YGGFMKKKFMr amide in guinea pig ileum (GPI) and mouse vas deferens (MVD) motility were studied using an isolated tissue organ bath system, and morphine and Dyna (1-13) served as controls. Acetylcholine was used for muscle stimulation. The observations were validated by specific antagonist pretreatment experiments using naloxonazine, naltrindole and norbinaltor-phimine norBNI. rESULTS:YFa did not demonstrate significant inhibition of GPI muscle contraction as compared with mor-phine (15% vs 62%, P = 0.0002), but moderate inhibition of MVD muscle contraction, indicating the role of κ opioid receptors in the contraction. A moderate inhibition of GPI muscles by (Des-Phe) YFa revealed the role of anti-opiate receptors in the smooth muscle contraction. (D-Ala-2) YFa showed significant inhibition of smooth muscle contraction, indicating the involvement of mainly δ receptors in MVD contraction. These results were supported by specific antagonist pretreatment assays. CONCLUSION:YFa revealed its side-effect-free analgesic properties with regard to arrest of gastroin-testinal transit. The study provides evidences for the involvement of κ and anti-opioid receptors in smooth muscle contraction.

Structural Tuning of Low Band Gap Intermolecular Push/Pull Side-chain Polymers for Organic Photovoltaic Applications

A series of novel low band gap donor-acceptor （D-A） type organic co-polymers （BT-F-TPA, BT-CZ-TPA and BT-SI-TPA） consisting of electron-deficient acceptor blocks both in main chains （M1） and at the pendant （M2） were polymerized with different electron rich donor （M3-M5） blocks, i.e., 9,9-dihexyl-9H-fluorene, N-alkyl-2,7-carbazole, and 2,6-dithinosilole, respectively, via Suzuki method. These polymers exhibited relatively low band gaps （1.65-1.88 eV） and broad absorption ranges （680-740 nm）. Bulk heterojunction （BHJ） solar cells incorporating these polymers as electron donors, blended with [6,6]-phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester （PC61BM） or [6,6]-phenyl-Cvl-butyric acid methyl ester （PC71BM） as electron-acceptors in different weight ratios were fabricated and tested under 100 mW/cm2 of AM 1.5 with white-light illumination. The photovoltaic device containing donor BT-SI-TPA and acceptor PC71BM in 1：2 weight ratio showed the best power conversion efficiency （PCE） value of 1.88%, with open circuit voltage （Voc） = 0.75 V, short circuit current density （Jsc） = 7.60 mA/cm2, and fill factor （FF） = 33.0%.

Predicting the impact of climate change on the distribution of two threatened Himalayan medicinal plants of Liliaceae in Nepal

Predicting the potential distribution of medicinal plants in response to climate change is essential for their conservation and management. Contributing to the management program, this study aimed to predict the distribution of two threatened medicinal plants, Fritillaria cirrhosa and Lilium nepalense. The location of focal species gathered from herbarium specimen housed in different herbaria and online databases were geo-referenced and checked for spatial autocorrelation. The predictive environmental variables were selected, and MaxE nt software was used to model the current and future distributions of focal species. Four representative Concentration Pathway(rCP) trajectories of the BCC-CSM1.1 model were used as the future(2050) projection layer. The MaxEnt modelling delineated the potential distribution of F. cirrhosa and L. nepalense. The current suitability is projected towards Central and Eastern Hilly/Mountainous regions. Both species gainmaximum suitability in rCP 4.5 which decline towards other trajectories for L. nepalense. Overall, both the focal species shift towards the north-west, losing their potential habitat in hilly and lower mountainous regions by 2050 across all trajectories. Our results highlight the impact of future climate change on two threatened and valuable species. The results can be further useful to initiate farming of these medicinally and economically important species based on climatically suitable zone and for designing a germplasm conservation strategy.

Lubrication of dry sliding metallic contacts by chemically prepared functionalized graphitic nanoparticles

Understanding the mechanism of precision sliding contacts with thin, adherent solid nano lubricating particle films is important to improve friction and wear behavior and ensure mechanical devices have long service lifetimes. Herein, a facile and multistep approach for the preparation of graphene oxide (GO) is presented. Subsequently, surface modification of as-synthesized GO with octadecyl amine (ODA) is performed to prepare hydrophobic GO-ODA and with 6-amino-4-hydroxy-2-naphthalenesulfonic acid (ANS) to prepare amphoteric GO-ANS through a nucleophilic addition reaction. X-ray diffraction and ultraviolet-visible, Fourier transform infrared, and raman spectroscopy provide significant information about the reduction of oxygen functionalities on GO and the introduction of new functionalities in GO-ODA and GO-ANS. The effects of particle functionalization for the improved control of particle adhesion to the tribocontact have been studied. Wettability and thermal stability were determined using the water contact angle, and atomic force microscopy and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) were used to characterize particle adhesion to the tribocontact. The tribological performances of the particles have been investigated using macro- and micro-tribometry using pin/ball-on-disc contact geometries. The influence of particle functionalization on the contact pressure and sliding velocity was also studied under rotating and reciprocating tribo-contact in ambient conditions. With an increase in the contact pressure, the functionalized particles are pushed down into the contact, and they adhere to the substrate to form a continuous film that eventually reduces friction. Amphoteric GO-ANS provides the lowest and most steady coefficient of friction (COF) under all tested conditions along with low wear depth and minimal plastic deformation. Surveillance of antibiotic sensitivity pattern in chronic suppurative otitis media of an Indian teaching hospital

Introduction:Chronic suppurative otitis media (CSOM) is a common problem in worldwide and untreated CSOM leads to fatal complications like facial nerve paralysis,lateral sinus thrombosis,labyrinthitis,meningitis and brain abscess in developing country like ***:To isolate causative bacteria and antibiotic sensitivity pattern for CSOM and to know the prevalence of extended spectrum beta lactamases (ESBL) and Metallobetalactamases (MBL) in CSOM ***:A total of 500 ear swabs of clinical suspected CSOM patients were cultured on specific cultured medium and identified the bacteria with conventional *** all the identified bacteria were subjected with specific antibiotics by the Kirby-Bauer's method to know the resistance pattern of *** and MBL strains were detected by double disc diffusion ***:A total of 384 bacteria were isolated from 500 CSOM patients,among them 86 *** (22.40%),112 Staphylococcus aureus (29.17%),53 *** (13.80%),32 *** (18%),26 *** (6.77%),24 *** (6.25%),23 *** (5.99%),18 *** (4.69%) and 10 *** (2.60%) identified with conventional *** antibiotic disc diffusion methods 74.22% ESBL strains and 9.90%MBL strains were *** resistant strains of *** (86/384,22.40%) were more prevalent than those of *** (112/384,29.17%) and other bacteria in ear *** and vancomicin could control to gram negative bacteria and gram positive bacteria ***:Continuous and periodic evaluation of microbiological profile and antimicrobial sensitivity pattern of bacterial is essential for optimum management of CSOM patients.
