Objective: To study the usefulness of mannitol in spontaneous intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) patients. Method: 128 CT proven supratentorial ICH patients within 6 days of ictus were randomized into study and control groups. The study group received mannitol 20%, 100 ml every 4 h for 5 days, tapered in the next 2 days. The control group received sham infusion. Primary endpoint was 1-month mortality and secondary endpoint functional disability at 3 months assessed by Barthel index score. Results: There were 65 patients in study and 63 in control groups. The study and control groups were evenly matched regarding age, Glasgow coma scale (GCs) score, Canadian Neurological scale (CNs) score, pupillary asymmetry, pyramidal signs on non-hemiplegic side, and location, midline shift and ventricular extension of hematoma. At 1 month, 16 patients died in each group. The primary and secondary endpoints were not significantly different between the two groups. Conclusion: Low dose mannitol does not seem to be beneficial in patients with ICH.

We are interested in investigating whether cancer therapy may alter the mitochondrial redox state in cancer cells to inhibit their growth and *** redox state can be imaged by the redox scanner that collects the fuorescence signals from both the oxidized-fAavoproteins(Fp)and the reduced form of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide(NADH)in snap frozen tissues and has been previously employed to study tumor aggressiveness and treatment ***,with the redox scanner we investigated the effects of chemotherapy on mouse xenografts of a human diffuse large *** lymphoma cell line(DLCL2).The mice were treated with CHOP therapy,i.e,cyclophosphamide(C)+hydroxydoxorubicin(H)+Oncovin(O)+prednisone(P)with CHO administration on day 1 and prednisone administration on days *** Fp content of the treated group was significantly decreased(p=0.033)on day 5,and the mitochondrial redox state of the treated group was slightly more reduced than that of the control group(p=0.048).The decrease of the Fp heterogeneity(measured by the mean st andard deviation)had a border-line statistical significance(p=0.071).The result suggests that the mitochondrial metabolism of lymphoma cells was slightly suppressed and the lymphomas became less aggressive after the CHOP therapy.

Inhibition of N-（4-hydroxyphenyl）retinamide induced autophagy at a lower dose enhances cell death in malignant glioma cells

The question whether chemotherapy induced autophagy is causative to the demise of the cells or is it a part of the survival mechanism activated during cellular distress is *** and we have previously demonstrated apoptosis inducing capacity of N-(4-hydroxyphenyl) retinamide (4-HPR) in malignant glioma *** provide evidences of 4-HPR induced autophagy at a lower concentration (5 muM).sub optimal dose of 4-HPR treatment of malignant gliomas cell lines increased G2/M arrest whereas cell accumulated in s-phase at a higher concentration.4-HPR-induced autophagy was associated with acidic vacuole (AVO) formation and recruitment of microtubule-associated protein light chain 3 (LC3).At higher concentration of 10 mum of 4-HPR glioma cells undergoing apoptosis manifested autophagic features indicated by autophagosome formation, AVO development and LC3 localization.

Ferroelectric Properties of CuFe2O4, BaFe2O4, Ba0.2La0.8Fe2O4 Nanoparticles

In this article,we report ferroelectric properties of copper ferrite CuFe2O4 nanoparticles(CFN),Barium ferrite nanoparticles BaFe2O4(BFN)and La substituted barium ferrite Ba0.2La0.8Fe2O4(BLFN)nanoparticles synthesized via hydrothermal *** X-Ray diffraction for the synthesized particles reflects the cubic phase formation for CuFe2O4,orthorhombic phase structure for the BaFe2O4 and cubic formation of Ba0.2 La0.8Fe2O4(BLFN).The structural parameters such as crystallite size and micro-strain are computed from XRD and Williamson-Hall(W-H)*** polarization-electric field(P-E)loop studies gave information about the ferroelectric nature of the synthesized *** was noticed that the CFN particle has a lossy dielectric nature whereas BFN,BLFN samples exhibit a multiferroic nature.

Aim: Due of paucity of studies on stress ulcer prophylaxis in intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH), we have evaluated the usefulness of ranitidine and sucralfate in preventing gastric hemorrhage (GH) in patients with ICH. subjects and methods: In a hospital-based randomized placebo-controlled study, patients with CT-proven ICH within 7 days of ictus were randomized into ranitidine 50 mg i.v. eight hourly, sucralfate 1 g six hourly and placebo groups. Patients were conservatively managed. Primary endpoint was occurrence of GH within 15 days of ictus and secondary endpoint 1-month mortality. Results: The mean age of the patients was 57.2 (range 25-90) years and 40 were females. There were 45 patients in ranitidine, 49 in sucralfate and 47 in placebo group. Demographic, clinical and radiological features were not significantly different in 3 groups. GH occurred in 11 (23.4%) patients in placebo, 5 (11.1%) in ranitidine and 7 (14.3%) in sucralfate group, which was not significant. Only one female had GH. There were 13 (27.7%) deaths in placebo, 5 (11.1%) in ranitidine and 12 (24.5%) in sucralfate group. Pneumonia occurred in placebo group in 5 (10.6%), ranitidine in 2 (4.4%) and sucralfate in 5 (10.2%) patients, which was not significantly different. Co nclusion: Ranitidine and sucralfate do not seem to significantly prevent GH or r educe 1-month mortality.
