Uncovering the effect of poly(ethylene-co-vinyl alcohol)molecular weight and vinyl alcohol content on morphology,antifouling,and permeation properties of polysulfone ultrafiltration membrane:thermodynamic and formation hydrodynamic behavior

Various hydrophilic poly(ethylene-co-vinyl alcohol)(EVOH)were used herein to precisely control the structure and hydrodynamic properties of polysulfone(PSF)membranes.Particularly,to prepare pristine PSF and PSF/EVOH blends with increasing vinyl alcohol(VOH:73%,68%,56%),the non-solvent-induced phase separation(NIPS)technique was used.Polyethylene glycol was used as a compatibilizer and as a porogen in N,Ndimethylacetamide.Rheological and ultrasonic separation kinetic measurements were also carried out to develop an ultrafiltration membrane mechanism.The extracted membrane properties and filtration capabilities were systematically compared to the proposed mechanism.Accordingly,the addition of EVOH led to an increase in the rheology of the dopes.The resulting membranes exhibited a microporous structure,while the finger-like structures became more evident with increasing VOH content.The PSF/EVOH behavior was changed from immediate to delayed segregation due to a change in the hydrodynamic kinetics.Interestingly,the PSF/EVOH32 membranes showed high hydrophilicity and achieved a pure water permeability of 264 L·m^(–2)·h^(–1)·bar^(–1),which was higher than that of pure PSF membranes(171 L·m^(–2)·h^(–1)·bar^(–1)).In addition,PSF/EVOH32 rejected bovine serum albumin at a high rate(>90%)and achieved a significant restoration of permeability.Finally,from the thermodynamic and hydrodynamic results,valuable insights into the selection of hydrophilic copolymers were provided to tailor the membrane structure while improving both the permeability and antifouling performance.

Herein,polyethersulfone(PES)and sulfonated polysulfone(SPSf)blend membranes were prepared with addition of sulfonated polyethersulfone(SPES)as a hydrophilic polymer and adipic acid as a porogen via non-solvent induced phase separation method for effective fractionation of dyes based on the influence of steric hindrance and charge effect.Raman spectroscopy and molecular dynamic simulation modeling confirmed that hydrogen bonds between PES,SPSf,SPES,and adipic acid were crucial to membrane formation and spatial arrangement.Further addition of hydrophilic SPES resulted in a membrane with reduced pore size and molecular weight cut-off as well as amplified negative charge and pure water permeance.During separation,the blend membranes exhibited higher rejection rates for nine types of small molecular weight(269.3–800 Da)dyes than for neutral polyethylene glycol molecules(200–1000 Da).This was attributed to the size effect and the synergistic effect between steric hindrance and charge repulsion.Notably,the synergistic impact decreased with dye molecular weight,while greater membrane negative charge enhanced small molecular dye rejection.Ideal operational stability and anti-fouling performance were best observed in M2(PES/SPSf/SPES,3.1 wt%).Summarily,this study demonstrates that SPES with–SO3‒functional groups can be applied to control the microstructure and separation of membranes.

The global populationhas beenandwill continue to be severely impacted by theCOVID-19 epidemic.The primary objective of this research is to demonstrate the future impact of COVID-19 on those who suffer from other fatal conditions such as cancer,heart disease,and diabetes.Here,using ordinary differential equations(ODEs),two mathematical models are developed to explain the association between COVID-19 and cancer and between COVID-19 and diabetes and heart disease.After that,we highlight the stability assessments that can be applied to these models.Sensitivity analysis is used to examine how changes in certain factors impact different aspects of disease.The sensitivity analysis showed that many people are still nervous about seeing a doctor due to COVID-19,which could result in a dramatic increase in the diagnosis of various ailments in the years to come.The correlation between diabetes and cardiovascular illness is also illustrated graphically.The effects of smoking and obesity are also found to be significant in disease compartments.Model fitting is also provided for interpreting the relationship between real data and the results of thiswork.Diabetic people,in particular,need tomonitor their health conditions closely and practice heart health maintenance.People with heart diseases should undergo regular checks so that they can protect themselves from diabetes and take some precautions including suitable diets.The main purpose of this study is to emphasize the importance of regular checks,to warn people about the effects of COVID-19(including avoiding healthcare centers and doctors because of the spread of infectious diseases)and to indicate the importance of family history of cancer,heart diseases and diabetes.The provision of the recommendations requires an increase in public consciousness.

Non-destructive silkworm pupa gender classification with X-ray images using ensemble learning

Sericulture is the process of cultivating silkworms for the production of silk.High-quality production of silk without mixing with low quality is a great challenge faced in the silk production centers.One of the possibilities to overcome this issue is by separating male and female cocoons before extracting silk fibers from the cocoons as male cocoon silk fibers are finer than females.This study proposes a method for the classification of male and female cocoons with the help of X-ray images without destructing the cocoon.The study used popular single hybrid varieties FC1 and FC2 mulberry silkworm cocoons.The shape features of the pupa are considered for the classification process and were obtained without cutting the cocoon.A novel point interpolation method is used for the computation of the width and height of the cocoon.Different dimensionality reduction methods are employed to enhance the performance of the model.The preprocessed features are fed to the powerful ensemble learning method AdaBoost and used logistic regression as the base learner.This model attained a mean accuracy of 96.3%for FC1 and FC2 in cross-validation and 95.3%in FC1 and 95.1%in FC2 for external validation.

Let R be a finite Lie conformal algebra.We investigate the conformal deriva-tion algebra CDer(R),conformal triple derivation algebra CTDer(R)and generalized con-formal triple derivation algebra GCTDer(R),focusing mainly on the connections among these derivation algebras.We also give a complete classification of(generalized)con-formal triple derivation algebras on all finite simple Lie conformal algebras.In partic-ular,CTDer(R)=CDer(R),where R is a finite simple Lie conformal algebra.But for GCDer(R),we obtain a conclusion that is closely related to CDer(R).Finally,we introduce the definition of a triple homomorphism of Lie conformal algebras.Triple homomorphisms of all finite simple Lie conformal algebras are also characterized.

Sericin alleviates pentylenetetrazole kindling epilepsy and associated comorbidities via modulation of GABA-T enzyme and mitochondrial activity

Objective:To assess the effect of sericin against pentylenetetrazole(PTZ)kindling epilepsy and its associated comorbidities.Methods:Epilepsy was induced with PTZ at the dose of 30 mg/kg i.***.on alternative days for 25 days in rats.Sericin was administered orally at the doses of 250,500,and 1000 mg/kg for 35 days.The behavioral activities were performed using an elevated plus maze,forced swim test,and Morris water maze test.A PTZ challenge test was conducted on day 32.On day 35,rats were sacrificed to perform oxidative stress,mitochondrial dysfunction,neuroinflammation,neurotransmitters,GABA-T activity,and histopathological analyses.Results:Sericin at 500 and 1000 mg/kg significantly reduced behavioral changes and neuroinflammatory cytokines,as well as improved oxidative stress,mitochondrial enzyme complex activity,neurotransmitter level,and GABA-T enzymatic activity(P<0.05).Moreover,sericin improved the neuronal survival altered by PTZ kindling in rat hippocampus.Conclusions:Sericin mitigates epilepsy-associated secondary complications possibly by the modulation of mitochondrial enzyme complexes and GABA-T enzymatic activity.

Cellulose is a renewable,biodegradable,ecofriendly and sustainable biomaterial.Global market of nanocellulose is comprehensively very high due to its utility.Extraction of nanocellulose from bacteria and plant results in different morphology and size of nanocellulose.Biocompatibility,mechanical strength,biofabrication,crystallinity,high surface area per unit mass,hydrophilicity,porosity,transparency and non-toxicity of bacterial cellulose make it more attractive.The extravagant nanoscaled three-dimensional network of cellulosic structures possess extraordinary properties for biomedical application,evidencing its usage in skin therapy,cardiovascular implants,cartilage meniscus implants,tissue engineering,bone tissue and neural implants,wound care products,drug delivery agents,tablet modification,tissue engineered urinary conduits,and synthesis of artificial cornea.Hence due to potential benefits associated with nanocellulose effective and efficient techniques are required for the isolation of nanocellulose that should be economical,ecofriendly and non-toxic.

Structural Decomposition Analysis to Investigate the Changes in Energy Consumption in Pakistan

The world energy demand is increasing due to rapid growth in the global economy,industrialization,and urbanization.Pakistan is also confronted with increasing energy demand on one hand and is confronted with the challenge of energy demand-supply gap on the other hand.Since energy is the major driver for growth,it becomes important to investigate the trends of energy consumption in a country and the factors that are most affecting the changes in the use of energy.This particular study aims to investigate the use of energy by all the economic sectors of Pakistan during 2000–2012.The major contribution is the first time application of structural decomposition analysi for energy usage along with using Input-Output data for the period of 2002–2012.The results show the fluctuation of the energy intensity of the sectors throughout the study period.Also,the overall effect of energy intensity is negative on energy consumption and it shows a negative contribution value of-80.90%for the study period.Furthermore,the focus on more energy-intensive products like cement,automobiles,iron,steel products and the increasing final demand of the economy contributes to the growth of energy consumption in Pakistan during 2000–2012.

Effect of lifestyle changes and consumption patterns on environmental impact:a comparison study of Pakistan and China

Increased economic development and industrialization put strain on environment,hence causing pollution and destroying ecosystem.Generally,many different factors affect the environment.These factors include GHG emissions,deforestation,and others.These are all related to human activities on Earth.Other factors that affect environment include population,consumption patterns,and changing life styles of people due to increased income.This study involves the comparison analysis of Pakistan and China on the basis of environmental impact caused by some major driving factors.China is the second largest CO2 emitter in the world with a population of 1.37 billion in 2016 and the second largest economy in the world.Pakistan is ranked as 40th on the basis of nominal GDP.Both the countries observed noticeable growth in economic development for over 55 years,i.e.1960-2016.This study identifies how population,affluence,consumption,and emissions as the major factors affect environmental pollution and use ImPACT equation,or I =PACT,to calculate the environmental impact and to determine which factors affect the environment the most.The study suggests that the people of both China and Pakistan have experienced increased income for the past 50 years and this increase has led to the changes in their lifestyles,from suitable clothing and quality food to comfortable living and increased energy consumption,thus affecting environment.
