Analytical expressions for determining the stability of cohesionless soil slope under generalized seismic conditions

In recent major earthquakes, the researchers have found the need for consideration of vertical seismic acceleration for the stability analysis of the man-made and natural slopes. However, in most past studies, the performance of slopes has been assessed by accounting only the horizontal seismic component of the ground motion, without giving due weightage to the effect of vertical component. In the present study, analytical expressions are derived to determine the factor of safety, yield seismic coefficient and consequently the seismic displacement of cohesionless soil slope under combined horizontal and vertical components of the ground motion. The derivation uses the Newmark's sliding block approach, in which the soil slope with a planar failure surface within the framework of conventional pseudo-static analysis is assumed to follow the Mohr-Coulomb failure criterion. The effects of vertical seismic coefficient on the stability of cohesionless slope have been studied through a set of graphical presentations for a specific range of soil parameters. It is observed that overlooking the effect of the vertical component of the ground motion on factor of safety and the displacement while designing the slope may be detrimental, resulting in the slope failure. The general expressions presented in this paper may be highly useful in the field of earthquake geotechnical engineering practice for designing the cohesionless soil slopes under combined horizontal and vertical seismic loads.

We consider a locally rotationally symmetric(LRS)Bianchi type-Ⅱspacetime with a perfect fluid and a variable cosmological constant∧.To solve the Einstein field equations we consider the cosmological term∧to be proportional to R^(-m) with R being the scale factor and m a constant[***.D 58(1998)043506].In this model we obtain∧~H^(2),∧~(R)/R and Larnbda~t^(-2),in agreement with the main dynamical laws for the decay of∧.The physical significance of the cosmological model is also discussed.

Postmortem interval(PMI)estimation is a recurring problem in the field of forensic *** methods are effective but are insufficient to estimate accurate and precise time of death or *** addition,degradation of biological samples is another major problem in forensic science which affects the investigation process and misleads the *** previous studies reported that DNA fragmentation has strong correlation with *** fragmentation increased with prolonged *** assay is a rapid sensitive,versatile,reliable and cost effective technique that is specifically used for qualitative and quantitative estimation of nuclear DNA *** to this attribute,comet assay can help to estimate accurate and precise time of death for some extent that is for early PMI *** addition,two confounding factors are responsible for DNA fragmentation:(1)micro-organism;(2)environmental ***,comet assay plays a dual role:(1)partially degraded samples get repaired using repair enzyme;(2)accurate time since deposition can be measured without using repair ***,this assay can also help to identify potential exposures of environmental-released chemicals/toxicants and its deleterious effects on human *** this way,comet assay shows its versatile applications that could be useful for forensic ***,with the help of this review,an attempt was made to explore the versatility of comet assay technique for forensic applications and its future perspective.

We documented the status of fern diversity, biomass and car- bon accumulation at Chilapatta Reserve Forest in Cooch Behar Wildlife Division, West Bengal. Stratified random nested quadrat sampling was adopted for analyzing the qualitative and quantitative characters. Nineteen fern species were recorded, of which two are yet to be identified. Identified species were of eight families and nine genera. Highest and lowest frequency recorded were 25.44 and 0.19 while relative frequency varied from 3.16 to 12.25. Fern density ranged from 93 to 13,403 ***^-1. Most of the species were widely distributed. IVI values ranged from 7.54 to 37.45. The above ground portion of ferns accumulated the major portion ofbiomass and carbon.

We investigate the transient behavior of an n-type double gate negative capacitance junctionless tun- nel field effect transistor （NC-JLTFET）. The structure is realized by using the work-function engineering of metal electrodes over a heavily doped n＋ silicon channel and a ferroelectric gate stack to get negative capacitance be- havior. The positive feedback in the electric dipoles of ferroelectric materials results in applied gate bias boosting. Various device transient parameters viz. transconductance, output resistance, output conductance, intrinsic gain, intrinsic gate delay, transconductance generation factor and unity gain frequency are analyzed using ac analysis of the device. To study the impact of the work-function variation of control and source gate on device performance, sensitivity analysis of the device has been carried out by varying these parameters. Simulation study reveals that it preserves inherent advantages of charge-plasma junctionless structure and exhibits improved transient behavior as well.

FeCrBMnSi alloy coating on steel substrate（310S） was fabricated by a high-velocity arc spraying（HVAS） process. Degradation behavior of the coatings at temperatures of 700℃ and 900℃ in air and in the coal fired boiler at（700±10）℃ was studied. X-ray difraction（XRD） and scanning electron microscopy/energydisperse spectroscopy（SEM/EDS） were used to characterize the coating as well as to analyze the corrosion products for elucidating the corrosion *** exhibited dense and globular morphology and the splats were interconnected as evident from SEM analysis. The maximum microhardness of the coating was found to be 630–1060 HV. The FeCrBMnSi alloy coating has imparted necessary resistance to oxidation and showed good adherence to the 310S substrate during the exposures with no tendency for spallation of its oxide scale.

Justice and Civic Friendship： An Aristotelian Critique of Modern Citizenry

Modem moral and political theorists make a sharp separation between justice and civic friendship, arguing that justice deals with the fair terms of co-operation in the social sphere whereas civic friendship is about an individual＇s contingent affections in the political domain. In addition, they also argue that the principles of justice must determine the nature and function of civic friendship in modem liberal society. Even though the historical origin of the above view can be traced to the writings of Immanuel Kant （2007）, John Rawls provides us with its most cogent formulation in recent times. In his book A Theory of Justice （1971）, Rawls argues that the considerations of right are prior to the considerations of good; therefore the principles of justice must determine the limits of civic friendship. Against RaMs, I argue that justice and civic friendship are intrinsically connected and that they cannot be separated in experience. I draw upon Aristotle＇s theory of virtue to strengthen my arguments. Following Aristotle, I show that both justice and friendship are virtues and that all virtues hold together. The Aristotelian coherence of virtues, I argue, can be useful in redefining the obligations of justice and civic friendship in contemporary liberal democracies.
